Chapter 18 Terralith Kingdom
As Ash, Lillie, and Golly approach the Terralith Kingdom, the world around them seems to harden. The soft, green fields and gentle hills they've traveled through give way to a landscape dominated by jagged cliffs and towering stone formations. The sky above takes on a brooding, grayish hue, and the air feels heavier, as if the very atmosphere is infused with the weight of the stone below.
Massive boulders, weathered by time and the elements, line the path ahead. Some are etched with ancient, indecipherable symbols, while others bear the smooth polish of erosion. The ground beneath their feet is uneven and rough, forcing them to tread carefully. Dust kicks up with each step, swirling around them in small, gritty clouds.
Ahead, the entrance to the kingdom begins to take shape. The walls, carved directly from the mountain itself, loom high above, their surfaces rough and unyielding. The structures seem almost like a natural extension of the landscape, as if the kingdom grew from the mountain rather than being built upon it.
"Look at those walls," Ash murmurs, his voice filled with awe. "It's like the whole place is made of one solid piece of rock."
Golly nods, her gaze steady. "That's because it is. The Terralith Kingdom was formed using the power of Arceus' Stone Plate. Every stone here carries a fragment of that ancient energy, making the kingdom nearly impenetrable."
Lillie steps closer to one of the large boulders near the path, running her hand along its rough surface. "It's incredible," she says quietly, feeling the cool, hard texture beneath her fingers. "There's so much history here… You can almost feel it in the air."
As they move further into the kingdom, the landscape becomes even more severe. The cliffs rise higher, the shadows grow longer, and the sound of distant, rumbling rockslides echoes through the stillness. Occasionally, they catch glimpses of Pokémon like Geodude, Onix, and even the rare Tyranitar, moving effortlessly among the rocks, their forms blending with the terrain.
The path narrows as they approach the massive stone gates of the kingdom. The sheer size and scale of the entrance make them feel small, almost insignificant, in comparison. Ash pauses for a moment, taking in the sight before them. "This is going to be tough," he says softly, a sense of determination settling in his eyes.
As they settle down in a secluded spot near the towering stone gates, Golly begins to recount the history of the Terralith Kingdom. The sound of the wind rustling through the narrow crevices of the rocks adds a haunting undertone to her story.
"Many generations ago," Golly starts, her voice steady, "a traveler named Iwara arrived in this very region. He had nothing with him except for an empty cooking pot. The villagers here were a suspicious and cautious lot, hoarding their food and refusing to share with anyone, especially a stranger. Iwara was starving, but he noticed that no amount of begging would sway them. So, he decided to use his wits."
Ash and Lillie listen intently as Golly continues, her eyes reflecting the harsh, stony landscape around them. "Iwara went to a nearby stream, filled his pot with water, and then dropped a large stone into it. He set the pot over a fire, and soon, one of the villagers, driven by curiosity, asked what he was doing. Iwara told them that he was making 'stone soup'—a dish so wonderful that they'd be lucky to taste it, but it needed just a bit more garnish to bring out the flavor."
Lillie's eyes widen slightly. "Did they believe him?"
Golly nods, a small smile playing on her lips. "They did. The first villager, eager to try this mysterious soup, offered a few carrots to add to the pot. As word spread, more and more villagers approached Iwara, each contributing something from their stores—potatoes, onions, cabbages, peas, celery, tomatoes, sweetcorn, meat, milk, butter, salt, and pepper. By the time the last villager had added their share, the pot was filled with a rich, nourishing soup. When the stone was finally removed, the entire village sat down to enjoy the meal together, marveling at how a simple stone could turn into something so wonderful."
Ash tilts his head, intrigued. "And that's how the kingdom started?"
Golly's expression grows more serious. "Yes. Our ancestor, who ruled over this land at the time, heard of Iwara's cleverness and generosity. He saw how a simple traveler managed to bring the villagers together through wit and shared effort. Impressed, he named Iwara the king of this region, which would eventually become the Terralith Kingdom. From that day on, the kingdom was built on the foundation of strength, resilience, and unity, just like that stone soup. The story of Iwara and his stone soup has been passed down through generations, reminding the people of Terralith that even the hardest of stones can yield something extraordinary with the right touch."
As they continue their exploration of the Terralith Kingdom, Ash, Lillie, and Golly find themselves near a large excavation site, where the sounds of pickaxes striking stone and the rumble of machinery fill the air. The atmosphere here is tense, the workers moving with a kind of grim determination as they chip away at the mountainside or carefully handle ancient fossils.
The trio keeps their distance, observing the scene with growing concern. The workers are clad in heavy gear, their faces obscured by helmets and masks, but even from afar, it's clear that they're exhausted. The relentless rhythm of pickaxes and drills creates a monotonous beat that reverberates through the rocky terrain.
Golly gestures toward the site. "This is one of the many mining operations overseen by Queen Lithia. It's a critical part of the region's economy, providing valuable minerals and rare fossils. But these jobs come with great risks."
Ash watches as a group of miners carefully extracts a large, fossilized bone from the rock. The delicate operation is fraught with tension—one wrong move, and not only could the fossil be destroyed, but the workers could be caught in a deadly collapse. "It looks dangerous," Ash murmurs. "Why do they take such risks?"
Lillie's brow furrows as she takes in the scene. "The rewards must be high, but the dangers are even higher. And fossil restoration is just as precarious. These ancient relics are irreplaceable, yet the pressure to succeed is immense."
A loud crack suddenly echoes through the site, drawing their attention. A section of the rock face crumbles, sending debris tumbling down. Workers shout in alarm, scrambling to get out of the way. One of them isn't quick enough and is struck by the falling rocks. The others rush to help, but it's clear this isn't an isolated incident—this is a daily reality.
Ash's hands clench into fists as he watches the scene unfold. "This isn't right," he says quietly. "No one should have to risk their life like this."
Golly places a hand on his shoulder, her expression somber. "It's the harsh reality of life under Queen Lithia's rule. The demands are high, and the consequences are severe. In Terralith, the stone is both a resource and a relentless master."
As they move deeper into the Terralith Kingdom, the landscape changes from the harsh, rocky cliffs to a bleak and desolate area that seems forgotten by time. The air here is thick with dust, and the once-proud stone structures are crumbling, barely holding together. Ash, Lillie, and Golly find themselves walking through what can only be described as the kingdom's slums—a stark contrast to the imposing grandeur of the mining sites they saw earlier.
The narrow streets are lined with makeshift homes, hastily constructed from whatever materials could be scavenged. The walls, once strong and sturdy, are now riddled with cracks, and the roofs sag under the weight of years of neglect. The people here move slowly, their faces marked by weariness and despair. Children play in the dirt, their clothes tattered and their eyes lacking the spark of hope.
Ash's heart sinks as he takes in the scene. "How can anyone live like this?" he asks, his voice heavy with disbelief. "This isn't right."
Lillie's eyes dart around, taking in every detail. "These people have been abandoned," she says quietly. "The kingdom's wealth is built on the backs of its people, but those who can no longer contribute are left to fend for themselves."
Golly nods, her expression grim. "Queen Lithia's focus is on the kingdom's mining operations and fossil restoration. Those who work in the mines or the restoration labs are given the bare minimum to survive, but those who can't… they end up here, in the slums. It's a harsh reality that few can escape."
As they continue to walk through the slums, they pass by a small group of elderly people huddled together for warmth around a dying fire. Their faces are gaunt, and their eyes reflect years of hardship. Ash notices that many of the homes here are without doors or windows, leaving the inhabitants exposed to the elements.
"This is inhumane," Ash whispers, feeling a deep anger welling up inside him. "No one should have to live like this."
Golly sighs softly. "This is the side of the kingdom that's hidden from outsiders. The strength and resilience that Queen Lithia demands come at a cost, and it's these people who pay the price."
Ash's fists tighten as he takes in the suffering around him. "Something has to change," he says with determination. "This can't go on."
After navigating through the slums, Ash, Lillie, and Golly find themselves near the entrance of a massive vault, where the Terralith Kingdom's most valuable treasures are stored. The vault is heavily guarded, with soldiers patrolling the area, but the trio manages to find a hidden vantage point where they can observe the operations inside.
Within the vault, workers are meticulously handling the kingdom's most prized possession: diamonds. These gemstones, extracted from the depths of the kingdom's mines, shimmer brilliantly under the artificial lights. The workers, moving with precision and care, polish and cut the diamonds to perfection, aware that even the slightest mistake could have severe consequences.
Golly leans closer to Ash and Lillie, her voice low. "These diamonds are the core of Terralith's wealth and influence. Queen Lithia ensures that only the finest stones leave this vault. But while these diamonds are the pride of the kingdom, they're also a symbol of the exploitation that fuels this place."
Ash's eyes narrow as he watches the process. "So much wealth, yet the people we saw in the slums live in poverty. It's not right."
Lillie nods in agreement. "These diamonds, no matter how beautiful, represent the suffering and hardships of the people who toil in the mines. It's a twisted irony."
As they continue to watch, one of the workers, visibly nervous, accidentally drops a diamond. The gem shatters as it hits the hard stone floor. Immediately, the room goes silent. The guards quickly converge on the worker, their expressions harsh. Without a word, the worker is seized and dragged out of sight, leaving the shattered pieces behind.
Ash clenches his fists, struggling to keep his emotions in check. "This is what the kingdom values more than its people—a piece of stone."
Golly's voice is filled with quiet anger. "In the Terralith Kingdom, diamonds are more than just stones—they're the embodiment of power and control. But they come at the cost of countless lives."
The trio quietly slips away from the vault, their thoughts heavy with what they've witnessed. As they move on to their next destination, Ash glances back at the vault, a deep sense of resolve hardening within him. "One day, the truth about this kingdom will be exposed. And when that day comes, things will change."
With that, they press on, leaving the glittering but tainted diamonds behind as they continue their mission in the United Region.
