Chapter 21 Stoneheart Kingdom
Ash, Lillie, and Golly arrive at the edge of the Stoneheart Kingdom, where the air feels dry and heavy with the scent of dust and earth. The landscape before them stretches out in waves of cracked, ochre-colored ground, dotted with sharp, jagged rocks that seem to rise from the earth like the remnants of ancient battles. The sun hangs low in the sky, casting a warm, golden light over everything, but the heat is relentless, baking the ground beneath their feet.
Lillie glances around, her eyes wide as she takes in the stark, rugged beauty of the kingdom. "It's so different from the other places we've been," she says softly, her voice tinged with awe and caution. The Stoneheart Kingdom, shaped by the power of Arceus' Earth Plate, is known for its tough terrain and equally tough inhabitants. The ground beneath them seems to pulse with an ancient energy, a reminder of the plate's influence over this land.
Ash adjusts his cap, pulling it lower to shield his eyes from the glare of the sun. He watches as a group of Sandile slink across the cracked earth, their sandy scales blending perfectly with the ground. In the distance, he spots a Rhydon stomping through the dust, each heavy step leaving deep imprints in the hardened soil. Overhead, a few Gligar glide effortlessly on the thermals, their shadows flickering across the rocky landscape.
Golly gestures toward a towering cliff in the distance, where a massive stone structure is carved into the rock face. "That's the Stoneheart Citadel," she explains, her tone steady and informative. "It's the heart of this kingdom, built around the Stoneheart Crystal—a relic infused with the power of the Earth Plate. It gives the kingdom its strength, but it also makes the people here as unyielding as the land they live on."
As they move closer to the citadel, the harshness of the environment becomes even more apparent. The soil, though rich in minerals, is dry and cracked, with only a few stubborn plants managing to survive in the unforgiving conditions. The sun beats down on them, but the warmth of the earth beneath their feet feels even more intense, as if the very ground is alive with the power of the Earth Plate.
"We need to be cautious," Golly warns, her eyes fixed on the distant citadel. "The people here don't trust outsiders easily, especially not ones who might disrupt the balance of their kingdom."
Ash nods, understanding the gravity of the situation. He knows that the Stoneheart Kingdom, like the others, holds secrets that are crucial to his journey. But first, they need to navigate this challenging terrain and its people without drawing unwanted attention—a difficult task when you're the most wanted person in the United Region.
As they walk through the Stoneheart Kingdom, the rugged landscape around them provides a stark contrast to the other kingdoms they've visited. After a while, Golly decides it's time to share the region's history, a story she knows well.
"We have Aladdin, our second king of the Ground Region," Golly begins, her voice calm but commanding attention. "He wasn't born into royalty but instead grew up as an orphaned street urchin in this very kingdom. Aladdin's journey to the throne is one of the most famous stories here."
Lillie's eyes light up with curiosity. "An orphan becoming a king? That's incredible! How did it happen?"
Golly smiles, appreciating Lillie's interest. "It started when Aladdin met Princess Jasmine, the daughter of the ruling king. Jasmine was different from the other royals—strong-willed and determined to lead, but she was expected to marry a prince. Jafar, the king's grand vizier, had his own plans, though. He wanted to overthrow the king and needed a magic lamp hidden in the Cave of Wonders. The catch? Only someone pure of heart, a 'diamond in the rough,' could retrieve it."
"So, Aladdin was that diamond in the rough?" Ash asks, already piecing the story together.
"Exactly," Golly nods. "Jafar tricked Aladdin, promising him wealth to win Jasmine's heart in exchange for the lamp. But once Aladdin retrieved it, Jafar double-crossed him and left him trapped in the cave. Thankfully, Aladdin wasn't alone. With the help of a Diglett and a magic carpet he found, he managed to escape with the lamp."
Lillie tilts her head, intrigued. "What about the lamp? What made it so special?"
Golly's smile widens. "Inside the lamp was an omnipotent Genie who could grant three wishes. Aladdin used his first wish to become Prince Ali, hoping to impress Jasmine. But the power of the lamp came with a price. Aladdin had promised to use his third wish to free the Genie and turn him human, but after exposing Jafar's plot and saving the kingdom, he hesitated, fearing he couldn't maintain his royal persona without the Genie's magic."
Ash frowns, understanding the dilemma. "That must've been hard. So what happened to Jafar?"
Golly's tone grows more serious. "Jafar stole the lamp and used it to become the most powerful sorcerer in the world. He even banished Aladdin to a frozen wasteland. But Aladdin found a way back, and in a clever move, he tricked Jafar into wishing to become the most powerful being in the universe—a genie. That wish trapped Jafar in his own lamp, sealing his fate."
"And Aladdin kept his promise to the Genie?" Lillie asks softly.
"He did," Golly confirms. "With Jafar gone, Aladdin used his last wish to free the Genie, allowing him to live as a human. Jasmine became queen, and she and Aladdin ruled together, bringing peace to the Kingdom."
Ash nods, absorbing the tale. "It's a good reminder that power isn't everything. Sometimes, being true to who you are is what really matters."
Lillie smiles, agreeing. "And it shows that even in the harshest places, there's hope for change."
The trio continues their journey deeper into the Stoneheart Kingdom, and it doesn't take long before the terrain begins to challenge even their most determined steps. The ground beneath them is rough and uneven, a treacherous mix of jagged rocks and loose gravel that makes every step a test of balance. Ash stumbles more than once, catching himself just in time to avoid a painful fall.
"This place is like an obstacle course," Ash mutters, wiping sweat from his brow. The sun bears down relentlessly, its heat intensified by the warmth radiating from the earth.
Lillie struggles to maintain her balance on the shifting ground, her concern growing as she looks around. "How do people here manage to get anywhere? These roads are nearly impossible to walk on."
Golly, navigating the rough terrain with practiced ease, turns back to them. "These roads are designed this way on purpose. The king and queen of Stoneheart believe that only the strong should prosper. They've made the kingdom difficult to navigate to ensure that only the most resilient survive."
Ash frowns, his gaze sweeping across the unforgiving landscape. "That's a harsh way to rule. What happens to those who can't handle it? The elderly, the sick, or even children?"
Golly's expression softens slightly, but there's a steely resolve in her voice. "King Alaric and Queen Marla are known for their strict beliefs. They see the harshness of the land as a test of strength. Those who can't keep up are often left behind. It's cruel, but that's how they maintain control and ensure that their people are as tough as the kingdom itself."
Lillie stumbles on a loose rock, reaching out to steady herself against Ash. "That's terrible," she says, shaking her head. "How can they expect their people to thrive under such conditions?"
Golly's voice is a mix of resignation and understanding. "It's their way of weeding out what they see as weakness. The Stoneheart Kingdom has always valued strength above all else. That's why so few outsiders come here—they know the land itself is as much an enemy as any person might be."
Ash, his determination undeterred, clenches his fists. "We have to keep going. If the king and queen are behind the suffering in this region, we need to find out how and why."
They press on, each step a reminder of the kingdom's unforgiving nature. The roads twist and turn through rocky passes and steep inclines, with loose gravel threatening to send them tumbling. With each challenge they overcome, their resolve to uncover the truth strengthens.
As they pause to catch their breath on a small, level patch of ground, Golly looks out over the rugged terrain. "This is just the beginning," she says quietly. "We need to stay vigilant. The king and queen's influence is strong here, and they won't take kindly to anyone who challenges their way of life."
Ash nods, his resolve clear in his eyes. "We're ready for whatever comes next."
As the trio continues their journey through the Stoneheart Kingdom, the harshness of the land becomes more apparent. The sun blazes down from a cloudless sky, and the dry, cracked earth underfoot seems to drink in every bit of moisture it can find. The air feels heavy and oppressive, and the lack of any significant vegetation only adds to the feeling of desolation.
Lillie wipes the sweat from her brow, her throat parched. "It's so hot here… and there's no water in sight. How do the people here survive in these conditions?"
Golly nods, her expression serious. "Water is a rare and precious resource in the Stoneheart Kingdom. The land is arid, and the natural springs that once flowed freely have dried up over the years. The people here are constantly struggling to find enough water to survive."
Ash looks around, noticing how the few plants that manage to cling to life are brittle and withered, their leaves shriveled from lack of hydration. "What happens when they run out? Do they have any way to get more water?"
Golly sighs, her eyes narrowing as she surveys the barren landscape. "King Alaric and Queen Marla control the water supply with an iron grip. They've built a system of reservoirs and wells, but access to them is strictly controlled. Only those who prove their worth—or have something valuable to offer—are granted access to the water they need."
Lillie's eyes widen in shock. "That's terrible! So, people are forced to trade whatever they have just to survive?"
Golly nods grimly. "Exactly. The water shortage is a constant struggle, and it's a tool the king and queen use to keep their people in line. Those who can't pay the price are often left to fend for themselves, and many don't make it. The kingdom's strength comes at a high cost, and it's the ordinary people who pay the price."
Ash's fists clench at his sides, anger simmering beneath the surface. "That's just cruel. They're using people's desperation to keep them under control."
Golly's gaze softens slightly as she looks at Ash. "It's the way they've ruled for generations. The people here have adapted, but it's a harsh life. The strong survive, and the weak… well, they're left behind."
Lillie, her face pale with concern, glances at Ash. "We have to do something. We can't just stand by while people suffer like this."
Ash nods, his resolve hardening. "We'll find a way to help, but we need to be careful. If the king and queen find out we're here, they'll see us as a threat. We have to gather as much information as we can before making a move."
As they continue their journey, the oppressive heat and the knowledge of the kingdom's suffering weigh heavily on their minds. The lack of water, like the difficult roads, is a reminder of the Stoneheart Kingdom's brutal philosophy—a place where only the strongest can endure, and where survival is a daily battle.
As the trio ventures further into the heart of the Stoneheart Kingdom, they come across a sight that makes them stop in their tracks. In the distance, towering structures of stone rise from the barren landscape—pyramids, partially constructed and surrounded by scores of workers toiling under the relentless sun.
Lillie gasps, her eyes wide with horror. "Are they… building pyramids? Why would they be doing this in a place like this?"
Golly's expression darkens as she watches the scene unfold. "These pyramids are monuments to the power and legacy of King Alaric and Queen Marla. They believe that by constructing these massive structures, they will cement their rule for generations to come. But what you're seeing here is the real cost—the people forced into labor to build them."
Ash's gaze hardens as he observes the workers, their movements slow and labored, their faces gaunt with exhaustion. Many are struggling to lift heavy stones, their bodies bent under the weight of their burdens. Whip-wielding overseers shout orders, driving the workers to push beyond their limits.
"These people… they're being forced to do this," Ash says, his voice low with anger. "This isn't just hard work; it's slavery."
Golly nods solemnly. "Anyone who defies the king and queen's rule or fails to prove their strength is sent here. They're forced to work on the pyramids as punishment, often until they collapse from exhaustion. It's another way the rulers maintain control—by breaking the spirits of those who dare to resist."
Lillie's hands tremble as she watches a young worker stumble and fall, only to be dragged back to his feet by an overseer. "This is monstrous… How can they justify this?"
"They see it as a necessary sacrifice," Golly explains, her voice filled with bitterness. "The pyramids are symbols of their power, and they believe that by forcing the weak to build them, they're weeding out those unfit to live in their kingdom. It's a twisted form of survival of the fittest."
Ash clenches his fists, struggling to contain his fury. "We can't let this continue. We have to do something."
Golly places a hand on Ash's shoulder, her eyes filled with understanding. "I know you want to help, Ash, but we're vastly outnumbered, and if we're discovered, it could mean the end for all of us. We need to stay focused on our mission and find a way to bring about change that will last."
Ash takes a deep breath, nodding reluctantly. "You're right. But someday, these people will be free. I'll make sure of it."
With heavy hearts, the trio turns away from the horrific scene, the cries of the workers echoing in their ears as they leave the Stoneheart Kingdom behind. The image of the unfinished pyramids lingers in their minds, a stark reminder of the cruelty and oppression that still reigns in this harsh land.
As they move toward their next destination, Ash's resolve only deepens. The Stoneheart Kingdom may be behind them, but the fight against its brutal rulers and their twisted ideals is far from over.
Ground Type Kingdom is done, and now we have two left to go and the next one will be the Steel Type.
