Chapter 22 Steelhaven Kingdom
As Ash, Lillie, and Golly approach the Steelhaven Kingdom, the landscape begins to change. The rough, earthy terrain they've grown accustomed to gives way to a more structured, industrialized environment. Towering steel structures rise from the ground, reflecting the harsh sunlight, while the air takes on a sharp, metallic scent that lingers in their throats.
The ground beneath them transitions from rocky paths to smooth, paved roads that glisten in the light, their surfaces meticulously maintained. Every detail of the kingdom seems to be crafted with precision, a testament to the influence of Arceus' Iron Plate, which is said to have shaped the very foundation of Steelhaven.
"This place feels so different," Lillie remarks, her voice tinged with awe as she takes in the sleek, polished surroundings. "Everything is so orderly, almost... mechanical."
Golly nods, her eyes scanning the horizon where more steel towers loom, each one identical to the next. "Steelhaven is known for its discipline and efficiency. The entire kingdom is built on the principles of strength and structure, and it shows in every aspect of the environment."
Ash observes the Pokémon that inhabit this kingdom, noticing how they, too, seem to embody the kingdom's values. A group of Magnemite floats by, their movements synchronized in perfect unison, while a pair of Beldum hovers just above the ground, their metallic bodies reflecting the light like mirrors. In the distance, he spots a sturdy Aggron standing sentinel, its steel armor glinting under the sun as it surveys the landscape.
"Even the Pokémon here seem different," Ash comments, his eyes narrowing as he watches the precise movements of the steel-type Pokémon. "They move like they're part of the machinery."
Golly agrees, her tone serious. "Steelhaven's Pokémon are deeply integrated into the kingdom's infrastructure. They're trained to maintain the order and efficiency that defines this place. Everything here has a purpose, and nothing is left to chance."
As they continue to explore, the trio takes in the meticulously organized landscape. The roads are lined with perfectly symmetrical trees, their leaves a dull gray-green, as if they've absorbed some of the kingdom's metallic essence. Small patches of grass peek out from between the stones, their color muted and subdued, as if they, too, have been shaped by the steel around them.
The deeper they venture into Steelhaven, the more apparent the kingdom's rigid nature becomes. Every corner, every structure seems designed with a specific function in mind, leaving little room for anything beyond the strict order that governs this land.
Lillie sighs softly, feeling the weight of the kingdom's atmosphere. "It's so... lifeless. Everything is perfect, but there's something missing."
Ash nods in agreement, his expression thoughtful. "Yeah, it's like everything is too controlled. We'll need to keep our eyes open here."
With that, they press on, their senses heightened as they delve deeper into the steel-bound world of the Steelhaven Kingdom.
As the trio makes their way through the meticulously organized streets of Steelhaven, Golly begins to share the history of the kingdom, her voice taking on the tone of a storyteller recounting a legend passed down through generations.
"The Steelhaven Kingdom has a long and storied past, but the tale that resonates most with its people is the story of Princess Turandot," Golly begins. "She wasn't the first ruler of this kingdom, but her story is the one that shaped the region into what it is today."
Lillie listens intently, intrigued by the name. "What's so special about Princess Turandot?"
Golly continues, "Turandot was a princess known for her intelligence and beauty, but also for her cold heart. She declared that she would only marry a suitor who could answer three secret riddles. Many princes from across the land came to try their luck, but all failed, and their failure cost them dearly."
Ash frowns at the thought. "That's harsh. What happened next?"
"One day," Golly explains, "a mysterious man arrived at the kingdom. He was different from the others—confident, clever, and determined. He answered all three of Turandot's riddles with ease, much to the shock of everyone in the court. But even after he succeeded, the princess refused to marry him. Her pride and stubbornness wouldn't allow her to be won so easily."
Ash and Lillie exchange glances, clearly interested in where the story is heading.
"The man, seeing her hesitation, proposed a challenge of his own," Golly continues. "He told Turandot that if she could discover his name before dawn, he would forfeit the marriage and leave her in peace. However, if she failed, she would have to marry him."
"Sounds like a dangerous game," Ash comments.
"It was," Golly agrees. "Turandot, determined not to lose, ordered everyone in the kingdom to search for the man's name. In the frenzy, they discovered a maid who served the man's blind father. They captured her, hoping to force the name out of her. Despite their torture, the maid remained silent, even declaring that the princess had a heart as cold as steel."
Lillie's expression softens. "What happened to the maid?"
Golly's voice takes on a somber tone. "The maid died protecting the man's secret. Her loyalty and sacrifice made the people of the kingdom start to pity Turandot, realizing the depths to which she would go to protect her pride. The man, moved by the maid's sacrifice, approached the princess. He kissed her, and in that moment, Turandot's heart thawed. She realized that she had fallen in love with him."
Ash nods, understanding the significance of the moment. "So, did he tell her his name?"
Golly smiles. "Yes. With her heart finally open, the man revealed his name to Turandot. She, in turn, accepted his marriage proposal. Together, they ruled the Steelhaven Kingdom, bringing order and structure, but with a newfound understanding of the importance of compassion and love. Their reign is what shaped Steelhaven into the kingdom it is today, where order and efficiency are valued, but not at the cost of humanity."
The trio walks in silence for a moment, absorbing the tale. "It's a powerful story," Lillie says quietly. "It shows that even the coldest hearts can change."
Ash nods in agreement. "And it reminds us that strength and order are important, but so are understanding and compassion."
As they continue their exploration of Steelhaven, the trio becomes increasingly aware of the unnerving precision with which the Pokémon move. Every Magnemite hovers in perfect formation, every Beldum follows an exact path, and even the Aggron, which Ash had admired earlier, patrols the streets with a mechanical regularity that feels unnatural.
Lillie shivers slightly as she watches a group of Mawile march by, their steps perfectly synchronized. "It's like they're all following some invisible command. I've never seen Pokémon behave like this before."
Golly nods, her expression serious. "That's because they are. Queen Aurelia has implemented a system where every Pokémon in the kingdom is trained to follow strict orders. They're monitored and controlled to ensure that everything in Steelhaven operates with flawless efficiency."
Ash frowns, his eyes narrowing as he watches the Pokémon. "But Pokémon aren't machines. They're living beings. Forcing them to move like this—it's not right."
Golly's gaze shifts to the towering steel structures that surround them. "In Queen Aurelia's eyes, this level of control is necessary. She believes that the key to a successful kingdom is absolute order, and that includes the Pokémon. By controlling their movements, she ensures that nothing disrupts the precise operation of the kingdom."
"But what happens if they don't follow the rules?" Lillie asks, her concern evident in her voice.
Golly hesitates before answering, her tone more subdued. "Those who don't conform to the system are… corrected. They undergo intensive training until they fall in line. It's rare for a Pokémon to resist, but when they do, they're dealt with harshly. The same goes for the people here. Queen Aurelia has little tolerance for anything—or anyone—that threatens her vision of perfect order."
Ash clenches his fists, feeling a surge of anger. "This isn't how things should be. Pokémon should have the freedom to be themselves, not be forced into some rigid system."
Golly places a hand on his shoulder, her voice calming. "I know it's hard to see, Ash, but we have to be careful. Queen Aurelia's control over this kingdom is strong, and any sign of dissent is quickly crushed. We need to gather more information before we can figure out how to help."
As they move deeper into the kingdom, the trio remains vigilant, their unease growing with each step. The sight of the controlled Pokémon serves as a constant reminder of the queen's iron grip on Steelhaven, and the challenge that lies ahead if they are to bring about any change.
Ash glances at Pikachu, who looks up at him with determined eyes. "We'll find a way to set things right," he says quietly, more to himself than anyone else. "Pokémon aren't meant to live like this."
As they venture further into the heart of Steelhaven, the trio stumbles upon a large, open area surrounded by towering steel walls. Inside, the sound of clashing metal fills the air, echoing off the cold, unyielding surfaces. Curious, they cautiously approach and peer through an opening in the wall.
What they see makes Lillie gasp in horror. In the center of the arena, several humans are being forced to test heavy, gleaming suits of armor. The armor, designed for battle, is massive and cumbersome, with sharp edges and intricate mechanisms that seem far too complex for ordinary people to handle. The testers, clearly struggling under the weight and design of the armor, are being pushed to their limits.
"They're testing armor... on people?" Lillie whispers, her voice barely audible over the clanging of metal.
Golly nods grimly, her eyes fixed on the scene. "This is one of the darker sides of Steelhaven's obsession with efficiency and strength. Queen Aurelia believes that the best way to perfect their battle gear is through relentless, real-world testing. And who better to test it than the very people who live under her rule?"
Ash watches in disbelief as one of the testers stumbles under the weight of the armor, only to be harshly reprimanded by a stern overseer. "This is wrong," he says, his voice tight with anger. "These people aren't soldiers—they're being treated like tools."
"The queen sees them as cogs in the machine," Golly explains, her tone laced with bitterness. "In Steelhaven, every citizen is expected to contribute to the kingdom's strength. Those who don't meet her standards are often subjected to these kinds of trials, where they're pushed to their breaking point."
Lillie's eyes fill with concern as she watches another tester collapse, unable to bear the strain any longer. The overseer, showing no sympathy, simply orders another person to take their place. "How can they live like this?" she asks, horrified. "Why would anyone tolerate this kind of treatment?"
"It's not by choice," Golly replies softly. "Queen Aurelia's rule is absolute. The people here have been conditioned to accept that their lives are for the kingdom's advancement, no matter the cost. Anyone who resists... well, they don't resist for long."
Ash clenches his fists, his determination growing with each passing moment. "We can't let this continue. These people deserve better than to be treated like expendable parts in some twisted experiment."
Golly places a hand on Ash's shoulder, her gaze serious. "We need to be careful. Queen Aurelia is ruthless, and any attempt to interfere could put us all in danger. But you're right—what's happening here is wrong. We'll find a way to help, but we have to be smart about it."
As they quietly retreat from the arena, the sounds of clashing metal and the sight of people struggling in the oppressive armor stay with them.
As the trio makes their way through the final stretch of Steelhaven, they notice something unusual. The bustling streets, once filled with people going about their daily tasks, have become eerily quiet. Instead of humans, the trio sees robots—sleek, metallic beings—methodically performing tasks that were once the domain of the kingdom's citizens.
Ash narrows his eyes as he watches a robot smoothly operate a forge, its precision far surpassing that of any human blacksmith. "These robots… they're everywhere," he mutters. "It's like they've replaced the people entirely."
Golly's expression is one of concern as she observes the scene. "This is the direction Queen Aurelia has been pushing for. In her quest for ultimate efficiency, she's gradually replaced human workers with robots. They're faster, stronger, and never tire, but at what cost?"
Lillie glances around, her face filled with unease. "What happens to the people who used to do these jobs? Where do they go?"
Golly sighs, her voice heavy with the weight of the truth. "Many have been forced out of their livelihoods, left with nothing to do. The queen believes that humans are flawed, that they're inefficient compared to the precision and reliability of machines. Those who can't adapt are simply pushed aside, their skills and roles deemed obsolete."
As they walk further, they notice more and more robots performing a variety of tasks—cleaning the streets, repairing machinery, even tending to the sparse vegetation in the kingdom's carefully controlled gardens. The humans that remain seem lost, wandering aimlessly or watching the robots with a mix of resentment and resignation.
"This isn't right," Ash says, his voice filled with frustration. "People need purpose. They need to feel like they're contributing, like they're part of something bigger. Replacing them with robots… it's like taking away their very reason to exist."
Golly nods in agreement. "Queen Aurelia's vision for Steelhaven is one of perfection, but in her pursuit of that ideal, she's forgotten the value of humanity. The kingdom may run like clockwork, but it's lost its heart."
Lillie's voice trembles with emotion as she speaks. "We have to do something, Ash. We can't just leave these people to live like this."
Ash's determination is clear as he looks out over the steel-bound landscape. "We'll find a way. Steelhaven might be running on cold, hard logic now, but that doesn't mean it has to stay that way. People need hope, and they need to know they still matter."
As they prepare to leave Steelhaven, the trio knows they've witnessed a kingdom where efficiency has been prioritized above all else, at the cost of the very people it was meant to serve. With one final glance at the robots tirelessly performing their tasks, Ash, Lillie, and Golly turn their sights to the horizon. The final kingdom awaits, and they're more determined than ever to bring change to the United Region.
Well, I don't know why I make Flying the last one, but here is the Steel Type and I hope you like it.
