Can I Have This Dance?
Post Girl Meets World. October of 2025.
I've wanted to do something with Amy/Alan for a while, but I couldn't find a plot that would fit them until now.
Topanga smiled softly as Amy and Alan danced to My Girl. Amy looked sweet in her sparkling silver dress that matched her hair, and Alan looked distinguished in his grey suit. She loved Cory's parents, for raising him as well as they did, for accepting her into their family, and for being excellent role models in marriage. They were clearly still as happy as ever, fifty years after their wedding day.
So, happy in fact, that Amy and Alan had decided to throw a big celebration for their wedding anniversary, complete with food, drinks, a band, and a large reception hall. They'd even allowed Topanga and Cory to co-host, as their wedding anniversaries were only two weeks apart. Furthermore, the chance to wear this new red dress excited her, especially with the slit on the back that showed off her legs. Better yet, were the shiny red sandals that matched.
"I got you a glass of white wine," Cory's voice said from behind her as he put the glass in front of her. Then he sat next to her, sipping his own drink. He looked especially handsome in that black suit. "Do you remember the last time we watched Mom and Dad dance to this song?"
Sipping her drink, Topanga thought for a moment. "Yes, I remember. You and Eric tried to organize a rave, but you changed it to an anniversary party for your parents at Chubbie's.
"Chubbie's," Cory said with a sigh, full of nostalgia. "I still can't believe it's gone."
And it had been gone for over twenty-five years, Topanga wanted to remind him, but this wasn't the time. "We'd only been going together for a couple of months when you hosted that party," she said instead.
"And I still hoped you might become my only girl when we danced to this song," Cory said, his adorable smile appearing on his face. He sipped his wine.
More memories washed over Topanga as she watched Amy and Alan dance. "Me too. And now I hope we'll be just as happy on our fiftieth wedding anniversary."
"We will be," Cory said, in a way that left no room for questions. As always, Topanga's heart swelled at how certain he always was about their relationship. Leaning over their table, she kissed him softly, tasting the wine on his lips.
As they sat back down, Cory's eyes landed on Riley dancing with her latest boyfriend. "How long has she been with this one?" He scowled.
"She told me she and Spencer have only been dating for a few months, so it's nothing for you to worry about yet," Topanga said gently. "Honestly, she and Lucas dated longer than she's been with this one."
Cory shook his head, his eyes still glued to the younger couple. "And did she have to wear that dress?" Riley's dress may have been a little revealing for her father's eyes, a black number with a very low neck and no back. "Are you certain he's treating our little girl, right?"
He looked like he wanted to run directly towards the younger couple and break them apart. Topanga gave her husband one of her stern looks, that she knew worked in the courtroom, her husband, and even Mr. Feeny. "Our Riley is almost twenty-five years old, Cory. She can wear what she wishes. And I think if she was smart enough to choose Lucas, she still right in choosing Spencer."
Sitting down more firmly in his seat, Cory sipped his wine again. Then he sighed. "But she never invited Lucas to any big family events. What if…" He was too uncomfortable with saying it, but Topanga knew exactly what Cory was thinking…What if this guy proposed?
"If it happens, it happens," Topanga said more gently. "But remember, Riley is more focused on setting up her career as a speaker and podcaster than anything else right now. And she's happy with Maya as a roommate. It's August I think we should worry about."
Her eyes drifted to another table where August and Ava sat, a bit too close together for her comfort. Topanga needed to find a way for them to attend college separately. She sipped her own wine.
My Girl faded, and the band started to play I Knew I Loved You. Topanga grinned from ear to ear, recalling that since this party was for both Amy and Alan and her and Cory, each couple was allowed a song dedicated to them.
Cory's attention immediately switched from Riley and Spencer directly to Topanga when he heard I Knew I loved You, and Topanga's heart swelled more than ever.
"May I have this dance?" he said, as he stood up and held out his hand.
"Really?" Topanga said, as her heart filled her entire chest. Over their years together, Cory had made his disdain for dancing more than clear. He wasn't terribly coordinated and had never been comfortable with strangers surrounding him.
"Yes," Cory said, gazing directly into her eyes. "This is our song."
So, they began dancing to the song they'd always agreed described their relationship perfectly, because they'd loved each other in one way or another for their entire lives.
To get the full effect of this chapter, I recommend you watch one of the "I Knew I Loved You" videos for Cory and Topanga. There are several youtube songs I like for this couple, but I've chosen this one as "theirs" both because it fits their relationship so well, and because Savage Garden was a popular music group in the late 90s.
