Izuku heard ringing on the other end for almost a minute, and was about to go to voicemail when Dimentio finally answered. He looked stressed out, tired, and had a few cuts on his face that matched the scars from the Chaos Heart.
"Hey Izuku. What is it?"
"Are you okay?"
"Yes, I'm alright. What about you? You hardly contact me, and with video call no less. I hate this technology stuff. I find it a bit confusing. I wish we could go back where there were just trains and boats and blimps."
"I'm fine, I just have a question about your Quirk."
"Go on. I'm not busy. I actually just got back to the Origami Kingdom from the Other Realm. Quite the adventure I had. Apologizes if I don't answer right away, I'm worn thin on energy."
"Okay, I'll get to it then so you can sleep. You remember that puppet realm trial you put us through, right?"
"I'm aware, yes. I was actually thinking about it...That was...horrible of me. I'm sorry for that, Izuku."
"Don't worry about that for now. Well, we just captured a new villainess, and she can use puppets in almost the same way you did. Except, hers seemed more alive. Yours, even when controlled by you, had a bit of the liveliness of energy in them, you know?"
"They were just wooden dolls. I simply controlled them, is all. There was no real spirit in them. But tell me more, I'm interested now."
Izuku waited as Dimentio rested his phone against a mug and sat down at a table. He slid his hands together and rested his head on his hands.
"Ready?"
Dimentio smiled. "Go on, Izuku. You didn't need to wait for me."
Izuku held up a picture he'd taken of the Kung-Fu puppet, that he printed at the library before the call. "This was her puppet. She brought him out when I was talking to her earlier. She tried to escape. Her magic seems pretty powerful."
"Izuku, I mean this kindly, but I cannot see sh*t. The screen is way too tiny for me to see the image. Just give me a second and I can come over and we can talk in person."
"You really don't have to do that! If you're tired, you should get sleep and-"
A thin square appeared next to Izuku, and Dimentio appeared in a small pulse of distortion. He fixed his mask and tucked his hair back under his hat. He hung up the video call, as he was still holding his phone.
"Did you put your mask on when you teleported here?"
"Yes. Do you have any coffee or anything sugary? I need to re-energize."
Izuku handed him a plate of cookies Inko had been making earlier, and the jester sat at the table. He reached for the image.
"Oh, here." He handed it to Dimentio. "Anyways, since you're a puppeteer yourself-"
"Puppet Master, actually. The magic subclass is called Puppet Master."
"Oh, okay. Since you're a Puppet Master, I was thinking you'd know about anyone else with this type of power? And the strings are purple, like yours, so that led me to talking to you."
"You said villainess?"
Izuku nodded. "She was called Madame Grape."
Dimentio chocked on the cookie, coughed a few times, and brushed the crumbs off the table. "G-Grape...?" He coughed again. "You said her name was-let me get some water-Grape?" He teleported himself a cup of water, then drank some of it. "That's better. Ugh, that was painful."
"You know Madame Grape?"
"Cut it out, Izuku. Her name is Grape. And I actually happen to know her. I don't know her well, of course, but I know her. Peach could probably help you more, or perhaps even Davidonell."
"You contacted your dad?"
"B-by accident, yes. I do dislike him for not standing on my side when it came to Sandrahara, but he's better than her. I could tell he cares for me. There was a look in his eyes that I've seen on Olly, you, and a few others when it came to telling me they cared for me." He took another bite from the cookie.
"So he's still alive then? Why didn't you tell me? I've been trying to call you for a while, but you never answered."
"These are so good. Tell your mother I love her baking! And yes, he is. We found him thanks to the Chaos Heart Entity. And there's no modern reception in the Other Realm. We're working on it, but it's taking a while. Olly has no idea how to set up technology. Did you know he's almost fourteen now? He's growing fast, and so is Olivia. Fawful and Princess Shroob are trying to help Olly with the Union Project, but I believe it'll still take a year or two before we can get the technology signal to break through the barrier. But...that's enough about me. What have you been up to? Are you doing well in school? Oh, I sound like your father or something..."
Izuku snickered. "No, you're good. You caring for me is probably the best I've ever seen you. And you look so much nicer now! Your clothes are neater, you're not twitchy anymore, and you don't sound as insane. Have you been working on your mental health, because I was actually worried for you when you were here."
"Um...You can either agree on that, or say I need a lot more therapy sessions now. The whole situation with Darethend and the Other Realm was...something else."
"Darethend? Who's that?"
"An evil king from Other Realm. He came to the Mushroom Kingdom in hopes of world domination. He'd apparently been keeping all technological advances to himself and castle members. He also created the Chaos Heart by torturing a centaur demon named Zeth. And he apparently used to be friends with my family, and was promised the hand of David's first daughter? That would explain his fake wedding to Grape for her power..."
"Woah, what? That's a lot to take in at once. Did you say fake wedding?"
"He was a greedy man. He wanted Grape's Darkle in order to stay alive for eternity. He cursed himself in order to live for decades, but the price was he would die the most painful death imaginable. I suppose getting your face blown up by Princess Peach and Rosalina is pretty painful, if he felt it at all. He was a castle, after all. Anyway, he used magic on Grape in order to make her fall in love with him, so he could pretend to marry her to get close enough to steal her magic. She doesn't like being touched. But since she's made entirely from magic, stealing that would have killed her. So he staged a wedding in order to murder her in front of Davidonell and I."
Izuku blinked. "Castle...Darethend? Grape and David? Peach killed him?"
"I do suppose that sounds like a lot. I can assure you, it didn't seem like a lot of information to explain when we went through it. And don't get me started on what happened with Shadow Queen."
"What?! You went through so much, while I'm stuck here not able to help you?!"
"At least you don't need to worry about the Chaos Heart anymore. I think. Olive's gone to Other Realm in order to train himself better with the Chaos Heart Entity. From what I heard, he's been forming quite the bond with Zeth."
"Grape's...Darkle...can give you eternal life?"
"Well, no. Yes? She, so far, has been unable to die. Blasted to kingdom come by Peach? She came back. Nearly killed by Darethend? Oh, but she walked away without a scratch. And then there's me, the jester who nearly died from a Circus of my own design, and did die from Luigi beating my face in with green lighting." He stopped, dropping his voice into a sadder tone. "Perhaps we should talk more often. This would sound more believable if I didn't have that much to tell you."
"That can wait. I just want to know about Grape."
"She's my half sister."
"What?!"
"So you're telling me that she's nothing but her Quirk? She's alive because of it?"
"I would say more along the lines of 'it's alive because of her.' But yes."
Izuku began taking notes. "So she's Darkle, and Darkle's her? She's nothing without it, and it's nothing without her?"
"Pretty much. It used to be David's magic too, that's why I suggested you talk to him."
"I see. So she doesn't really know anything about her Quirk either, and that's why she avoided the question. She kind of does act like you, now that I think about it. Try to talk her way out of situations, obsessed with puppets, purple magic-user..."
"Olly's a 'purple magic-user' and he's not related to me in any way."
"And you're not denying the 'obsessed with puppets' one?"
"We both know it's true. But...that may come from the Darkle side of me."
"Wait, you have Darkle too? I thought your Quirk was Dimension Manipulation."
"Davidonell had Darkle before he made Grape, and I'm eleven years older than her, and he had his Darkle back then...So yes, I do have some Darkle in me, but it's mainly Dimension Manipulation. And now that I know Darkle can't hold in a human body...my arms make a bit more sense now. Grape must not have a body for the same reason, Darkle would destroy a human, or anything that isn't Darkle. So Darethend probably weakened significantly from using her Darkle to revive himself."
"Explain. I need this for Police records. I think I got it, but I want to make sure I don't word this weird."
"Because you're a smart child, and some people don't understand the way you write? I get it. Let's see here...Ignore my terrible art skills, I'm more skilled in the art of whittling rather than drawing."
He drew a sloppy picture of Grape on a paper he grabbed. He wrote "Darkle" next to her, then drew a nameless and detail-less figure with "sh*thead" written inside its head.
"Okay, so take this guy here. He's not important, so he's not anyone specific. You don't need to remember a name or anything. Let's say he did get his hands on Darkle."
Izuku flinched when he drew a scribble across Grape's face. He erased the arrow pointing to Grape and connected Darkle to the figure instead.
"So, Grape would die, for one thing," Izuku said.
He nodded once. "Now, since sh*thead here has a power that he can't control..."
He picked up the paper, and ripped in half. Izuku watched the pieces flutter down to the table, fear written on his face.
"It would completely destroy his body. But I know a bit of information from Peach, see? And I know why Grape can survive with Darkle, besides the fact she was the power."
He flipped the paper over, and began drawing on it again. He drew a black circle with a big squiggly line around it. He wrote "Darkle Core" above it, then showed Izuku the paper again.
"This is what Grape used to be, a core of magic. A being without feeling, a soul, anything."
"So how did she...?"
"I'm getting there. So when she was 'freed' from David, to say, her magic had a small bit of human DNA inside it. Creepy, right? Well, out magic is part of our DNA. To lose it is to basically hurt yourself."
"That is kind of creepy, but I'm sure I've seen worse."
"I'm sure we both have. Anywho...She formed a bond with a Sour Bunch guy named...I want to say Tobiath? I could be wrong, but it was along those lines. Anywho, he touched her, when she was still just this." He tapped the Darkle Core image with his finger.
"So his DNA combined with the human DNA?"
"It's a guess," Dimentio admitted. "Davidonell doesn't know exactly either, so this is based off experiences we've had."
"I see. But is it right?"
"Well, maybe? There's a possibility she could have combined the DNA, which would explain why she started to create her own body and mind after that...It seems she's more human than Sour Bunch, but there's a lot of Sour Bunch qualities in her too..." He rubbed the eraser on the pencil on his forehead as he muttered to himself. "Since she only had a little bit of DNA in her, then taking some from a Sour Bunch would cause her, maybe, to have enough to grow? But does it help her power any? Was it a way to protect her magic, or is it something else I'm not getting?"
"Dimentio, I got what I needed. Thank you. You should probably head home now and get some rest. I'd hate to keep you."
"Oh. I see. Well, apologies for rambling like that. As I said before, these are guessed bits of fact from what we already know. I'm certain Grape knows more, but I'm not sure."
"Go home and get some rest Dimentio. I'm sure I'll be calling you again soon."
"Okay but, her puppet is quite adorable! Mind if I keep the image?"
"No, I need that. And how do you think this is cute? Actually, forget it. Your puppets were way creepier."
Dimentio snapped, small stars coming from the motion. "Stay safe, Izuku. Your world can be a dangerous place. Are you certain you don't want me to bring Grape home?"
"I'm sure. Thank you."
"You're welcome. Ciao!" He teleported away.
"I got more than enough. I'll find out what your secret is soon, Grape."
