JOHN B

As we left the cabin behind and drove farther into the mainland, I couldn't help but think about how much had changed in such a short time. We were all exhausted, both physically and emotionally, but there was also a sense of purpose that kept us moving forward. The treasure, my dad's legacy, was still with us, and so was the danger that came with it. But we were determined to see this through.

Our next stop was a small town off the beaten path, a place where we could blend in and regroup. The plan was to lay low for a few days, gather our strength, and figure out what to do next. But as we pulled into the town, I couldn't shake the feeling that we were running out of time.

We found a motel on the outskirts of town, the kind of place where nobody asked questions. After checking in, we gathered in one of the rooms, trying to piece together a plan. It was clear that we needed help, and fast. But who could we trust?

"Sarah," I said, the thought striking me like a bolt of lightning. "We need to call Sarah."

JJ frowned, glancing at me. "You sure about that, man? Bringing her into this could be dangerous."

"I know," I replied, my mind already racing ahead. "But she's smart, and she knows this world better than anyone. If anyone can help us figure out our next move, it's her."

Kie nodded in agreement. "Sarah's got connections, resources. She might be able to get us out of this mess."

Pope hesitated, then nodded as well. "It's worth a shot. But we have to be careful. We don't know who's watching."

I pulled out my phone and dialed Sarah's number, my heart pounding in my chest as the line rang. When she picked up, her voice was filled with concern. "John B? What's going on? Where are you?"

"It's a long story," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "But we need your help. We're in serious trouble, Sarah. Can you meet us?"

There was a pause on the other end, and I could almost hear the gears turning in her mind. "Yeah, of course. Where are you?"

I gave her the address of the motel, and she promised to be there as soon as possible. As I hung up, I felt a mix of relief and anxiety. Sarah was coming, and with her, maybe we had a chance.

Hours passed, the minutes ticking by like a countdown. We were all on edge, our nerves frayed from everything we'd been through. JJ kept pacing the room, his eyes darting to the window every few seconds, while Pope and Kie tried to stay calm, but I could see the worry in their eyes.

Finally, there was a knock at the door, and we all froze. My heart leaped into my throat as I motioned for everyone to stay back. I approached the door cautiously, peering through the peephole. Relief flooded me when I saw Sarah standing there, her eyes wide with concern.

I opened the door, and she stepped inside quickly, closing it behind her. "John B, what the hell is going on?"

"We found the treasure," I said, cutting straight to the point. "But it's more than that. My dad... he left us a warning. Someone's after us, and they're not going to stop until they get what they want."

Sarah's expression shifted from concern to determination. "We need to get you out of here. All of you. We can't take any chances."

She glanced around the room, taking in the state we were in. "You need to stay hidden until we figure this out. I'll make some calls, see if I can pull some strings."

But before she could continue, another voice spoke up from the shadows near the door. "Sounds like you guys could use a hand."

We all turned, startled, as Cleo stepped into the light, a smirk on her face. "You didn't think I'd let you have all the fun, did you?"

"Cleo," JJ breathed, a mix of surprise and relief in his voice. "How did you—?"

"I've got my ways," she said, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "Sarah called me, filled me in. Figured you could use an extra set of hands."

I couldn't help but smile, the tension in the room easing slightly with Cleo's arrival. She was a wildcard, but she was also fiercely loyal, and I knew we were stronger with her on our side.

"We're glad you're here," I said, meaning every word. "We need all the help we can get."

Sarah nodded, her eyes scanning the room with renewed focus. "Alright, here's the plan. We'll split up, make it harder for them to track us. Cleo and I will create a diversion, draw them away from you guys. Meanwhile, you head to the safehouse. I've got a contact there who can help."

The plan was risky, but it was the best option we had. We couldn't afford to stay in one place for too long, not with whoever was after us closing in.

We spent the next few minutes gathering our things, the reality of what we were about to do sinking in. This was it—the final stretch. If we pulled this off, we'd have a chance to finish what we started. If not... well, I didn't want to think about that.

As we prepared to leave, Sarah pulled me aside, her expression serious. "John B, be careful. These people... they're dangerous. But we'll get through this. I promise."

I nodded, feeling a surge of gratitude for her. Sarah had always been there for me, through the good and the bad, and now, more than ever, I needed her strength.

Cleo clapped JJ on the back, a grin on her face. "Don't worry, blondie. We've got this."

JJ rolled his eyes, but I could see the tension easing in his shoulders. Cleo had a way of lightening the mood, even in the darkest of times.

With everything ready, we split up—Sarah and Cleo heading one way, and the rest of us heading to the safehouse. The night was dark and quiet as we drove, the road stretching out before us like a lifeline. I couldn't help but feel a mix of hope and fear as we pressed on, the weight of the treasure and my dad's legacy heavy in my mind.

We were close, so close to the end of this journey. But I knew the hardest part was still ahead. We had to outsmart the people chasing us, protect the treasure, and find a way to keep ourselves safe.

But for the first time in a long while, I felt like we might just have a chance. With Sarah, Cleo, JJ, Pope, and Kie by my side, I knew we could face whatever came next.

As we approached the safehouse, the sun began to rise, casting a warm, golden light over the horizon. It felt like a new beginning, a glimmer of hope in the darkness.

We were going to finish this, together. And we were going to come out the other side stronger than ever.

Because that's what we did. We survived. We fought. And no matter what, we stuck together.

Now, all we had to do was make it through the final battle. And then, maybe, we could finally have the peace we'd been fighting for all along.
