Dragons Rising Episode 10, Battle of the Second Monastery
The interior doors of the Monastery of Imperium shake as Photacs outside ram into it.
Lloyd takes a step back, pressing two fingers against the comm that's sewn into his gi hood.
"Sora? Arin? Hello? Anyone?" He asks, trying to reach his students. After a few moments he turns to face the other ninja and Wyldfyre, saying, "Their comms are still down."
"Or worse." Nya theorizes. A panicked expression flashes across Lloyd's face as he turns to look back at the doors, more Photacs causing it to shake.
Wyldfyre smacks her fist into her palm, growling out, "I didn't like running away anyway."
"Hard agree." Kai says, glaring at the doors. The two look at each other and set a hand aflame, giving each other a fiery high five.
"We could fight the Empress all day, but these dragons can't get caught in the crossfire." Lloyd says, pointing to the exhausted dragons behind them.
"We need Sora to shut down those Photacs."
Nya turns to look at the portal she and Kai came through earlier. An idea sparks in her mind.
"Or…" she begins, "we get the dragons out of here."
She points to the portal as the others turn to look at her. "That portal is how Kai and I came here." She explains, then starts to run over to it, the other following closely behind. "If we could activate it again, we could send all these dragons somewhere safe."
As they come to a halt in front of the portal gate, Lloyd asks her, "Would that work?"
Zane steps forwards and scans the gate, after which he announces, "This gate appears to be linked to our Monastery. But it is designed for much smaller transports. Based on its power readings, it could not handle the transfer of this many dragons."
Another loud thud comes from the doors, reminding them that there are still Photacs trying to get inside.
Lloyd turns to Zane, asking, "Can we increase the power of that portal gate?"
Zane thinks for a moment before replying, "It would need to be an extraordinarily large increase."
"We're right outside the palace. I bet there's something in there that could power the gate up." Nya points out, gesturing to the doors.
Zane scans the area she pointed to, eyes flashing white for a moment.
"I do detect a tremendous energy source." He confirms, but then points to the floor under them, saying in a sort of awestruck voice, "It is not in the palace. It is beneath us. I have never seen such a singular reserve of energy."
Lloyd shrugs his shoulders and suggests, "It's probably a giant battery that runs this whole kingdom."
The doors shake again, this time seeming stronger than the last. Kai worriedly looks at the doors before turning back to the others and saying, "Whatever you're gonna do, do it now. These things are gonna break through any minute."
Lloyd approaches a section of hexagonal panels that lead to the center of the monestary, he looks down at them for a moment before saying, "If this weird version of a monastery is anything like our home, then under these floor plates…" he starts hopping across the panels on one foot, "Should be an old obstacle–" All of a sudden one of the panels he lands on sinks down into the floor, causing him to trip. At the same time, a staircase opens up right infront of him, leading down under the monastery. With a surprised yelp, Lloyd falls down the stairs, finally stopping once he crashes at the bottom.
The others all rush over, Zane has an arm streached out as if he were trying to save Lloyd from falling. (A/N: Little late for that buddy) And Kai looks ready to run down himself to make sure Lloyd is ok.
But before he can do so, Lloyd lets out a groan and calls up, "Don't worry, I'm fine!" As if predicting the fire master's thoughts, "And I found a way out! Come on, Zane!" he continues.
As Zane is getting ready to jump, he notices Kai doing the same.
"Kai, perhaps you should stay here with the others." Zane suggests, earning him a glare from the brunette, "If the doors should break before we return, your help will be much needed in order to protect the dragons." he finishes.
Kai just glares at him even more as he realizes that Zane's right, as usual, "Humf, fine. I'll stay behind, again." He grumbles.
"Just make sure he doesn't do anything stupid, ok?" Kai asks, his glare turning into a look of concern.
Zane nods his head and jumps down after Lloyd. The others turn around to face the doors again, just in case. Well, almost all of them. Kai is still by the staircase, looking as if he's considering going down there anyway. He sighs and stands up from his crouched position, opting to pace back and forth in front of it instead.
Wyldfyre watches him as he walks, confused as to why he is doing it. Turning towards the other ninja, Nya, she taps her on the shoulder and then points at Kai, asking, "Why does he walk there like that?"
Nya looks over at her brother, then smiles as she realizes what he's doing, "He's worried about his husband." she says to Wyldfyre.
This only confuses Wyldfyre even more. Tilting her head to the side, she asks, "What is a husbeand?"
"Husband." Nya corrects her gently, "A husband is someone that you really care about, someone that you want to spend time with and protect, someone that makes you laugh, someone that makes you feel safe." She looks sad for a moment, as if remembering something.
"Like a mate!" Wyldfyre exclaims, eyes brightening in understanding.
"Well… not exactl–" Nya starts, trying to explain, but Wyldfyre cuts her off, turning back to look at Kai and asking, "Who is his mate?"
"Lloyd, the green one." Nya says, kinda giving up on explaining it to her. She then has a brilliant idea, "Hey, how about you go over there and ask Kai about husbands?" She suggests. Wyldfyre perks up at the idea, and immediately runs over to Kai.
"You!"
A loud yell makes Kai look up from the staircase, and good thing too. A red-ish blurr is charging straight at him, and he barely manages to twist out of the way and grab them before they run off the edge of the stairs.
He looks down at the figure he's holding, both surprised and not to see the wild child that had been fighting with them earlier. They also look surprised to find themselves securely in Kai's grasp.
Immediately they start squirming around, trying to get free. Even going so far as to try biting Kai before he manages to put them down away from the edge. They still do try to bite him, but he sidesteps them and they growl slightly at their failure, looking as if they're going to try again.
"Stop!" Kai shouts, holding a hand up and making the wild child pause.
"What the heck are you doing?" He asks them.
"I—" They pause, looking confused, "I don't know." They finally finish, "Blue girl said to talk to you."
"Talk to me? About what?" Kai asks, glancing over at his sister.
"About… husbands!" They say, suddenly remembering.
Kai blinks, confused, "Husbands? Why?"
"Because you walk here like this." The wild child says, imitating Kai pacing in front of the staircase.
"Blue girl said you were worried about husband."
"Yeah, I'm worried about him." Kai admits, rubbing the back of his neck and looking at the opening where Lloyd disappeared again.
"I have a question." The wild child says.
Kai looks at her, and she continues, "Why do you have a male mate?"
Kai blinks again, opening his mouth to say something, but she cuts him off, saying, "It does not make sense, how are you to have hatchlings if you both are male?"
"I- well- you see-," Kai sputters, unsure of how to go about explaining the concept of being gay or bi to the kid.
"It's complicated." He finally says, "Man I wish Zane was here to explain this." He mutters, knowing that the Nindroid would know exactly how to explain it.
"Lloyd and I love each other, and that's all that matters, we don't mind not being able to have kids." He starts, "I mean, if we really wanted to we could just adopt one."
"But why?" The wild child asks.
"Why what? Also, who the heck are you?!" Kai asks, finally getting around to figuring out her name.
"I am Wyldfyre of the Wildness!" She yells proudly.
Kai cocks an eyebrow, "Well that explains a few things."
"Anyway, why what?" He continues, crossing his arms and leaning on his right leg.
"Why do you like him?" Wyldfyre asks, tilting her head to the side.
"Why do I like Lloyd?" Kai repeats, Wyldfyre just nods her head.
"Why do I like Lloyd?" He says again, though this time to himself more so than anyone else.
"Well lets see, he's smart, courageous, an amazing leader, kind, has an incredible singing voice, seriously I walked into our room one day and thought I had just entered a concert or something. And he's absolutely gorgeous if you haven't noticed, with his sparkling emerald eyes and golden-blond hair. *sigh* He's got me wrapped around his finger, that's for sure." Kai finally stops rambling on and on, instead looking off into the distance with a dreamy look on his face.
Then he seems to suddenly snap back to reality, and says to Wyldfyre in a more serious tone, "But I think what the most important thing about our relationship is is everything we've been through together. From the Overlord to Morro to Garmadon to the Oni to the Overlord again. I've always been by his side, and always will be. We've gone through things that have left scars so deep, and not just physical ones. Ones that we both comfort each other about, since no one understands them more than us. I made Lloyd a promise to always look out for him. And I'll do so untill my last breath."
As Kai finally stops talking, he notices both the utterly confused face of Wyldfyre, and the surprised and slightly concerned face of his sister behind her. Not to mention all the dragons that have decided to all turn their attention to the very passionate fire master.
Face turning red from embarrassment as he realizes he just poured his heart out to a bunch of mythical beasts, a wild kid, and his sister, Kai tries to find some way to save himself from the situation he has now found himself in.
Luckily for him, at that exact moment an explosion happens behind them, and everyone turns to look at that instead of him. As Kai also turns to look he catches a glimpse of a bright green blurr shooting up from deep underground. It's so bright that it actualy takes the better part of a minute for Kai's eyes to adjust to the light. When his vision eventually does come back into focus he lets out a gasp in shock. Hovering in the air with bright green energy radiating out from absolutely every part of him, is Lloyd. His eyes are pure white and his hands are bursting with his green energy element. But something seems off, Kai has to squint a little, but he can tell that Lloyd isn't really here. Like, his body is there, but his face is blank and cold, slightly unsettling to look at. It's almost as if he's in a trance.
"Could he always do that?" Wyldfyre asks, looking up at Lloyd in awe.
"Not that I'm aware of." Kai says back, his voice just barely above a whisper as he too stares at his husband. He's so focused on Lloyd that he doesn't even realize that Zane is there too until he's already climbed up the underground staircase and is running towards them.
Without a word, Lloyd turns to the portal. He draws his hands to his right side and gathers a large sphere of energy between them. And then, he brings it in front of him and shoots it towards the unlit beacon above the portal, causing it to light up and open the portal doors.
"Onwards!" Wyldfyre yells, the dragons respond to her by roaring and charging at the portal, disappearing as they pass through it.
Above them, Lloyd is still hovering in the air. Kai watches him closely, trying to see if he's still in a trance. Then, suddenly the green light surrounding Lloyd starts to flicker. And without any warning, it abruptly disappears, causing Lloyd to start falling from the sky. Acting on pure instinct Kai runs as fast as he can towards Lloyd, jumping up and catching him mid air before landing on the ground with a loud thud, making sure to keep his body inbetween the floor and Lloyd's.
"Woh, I didn't know you could do that Greenie." Kai says, grinning down at his husband, but soon a frown replaces it as he realizes that Lloyd isn't responding to him. Upon closer inspection, he finds that Lloyd is passed out, likely from overuse of his powers.
Just then the door of the monastery finally breaks. Falling inwards with a bang as the Photacts step inside. Kai groans when he sees the smug face of Rapton atop the leading Photact.
This is going to be annoying. He thinks with a huff.
Later, back in the Monastery of Spinjitzu:
Kai sighs and gently strokes his husband's head. Lloyd is laying on their bed back in the Monastery while Kai sits on the edge, watching over him.
After escaping from Imperium through the portal, Kai took Lloyd straight to their room, and has barely left his side since. Only briefly here and there to eat and use the bathroom. Ever since Lloyd fell out of the sky he's been unconscious, and Kai's been getting uncomfortable flashbacks to another time Lloyd went off by himself and ended up unconscious.
A soft moan draws Kai's attention back to his husband who is now shifting slightly around on the bed. Then with a loud gasp, Lloyd's eyes shoot open and he immedietly jumps up, getting into a fighting stance as he looks wildly around the room.
"Lloyd!" Kai exclaims, also jumping up from the bed.
Still breathing heavily, Lloyd's eyes snap over to Kai and relief floods into them. He takes a step forwards, arm outstretched towards his husband.
"Kai." He breathes, then suddenly he grabs his head, groaning as a massive headache hits him. And since he's standing on a bed, and beds aren't known for their stability, he loses his balance and falls forwards.
Kai lets out a yelp and rushes over, catching Lloyd before he hits the ground. Gently he lays his husband back down on the bed, taking hold of his hands and slowly bringing them away from his head.
After a moment or two, Lloyd opens his eyes again, looking straight up into Kai's face. A smile dances across his face as he gazes lovingly at his husband. But then it fades into an expression of confusion and his eyes flick around the room.
"Am I… back in the Monastery? Our Monastery?" He asks, then groans again and also asks, "How long was I out?"
Kai smiles back at Lloyd, saying, "Yeah, we're back home. You've been asleep for days."
"Where are the others? Are the dragons ok?!" Lloyd asks, trying to get up again, but Kai gently forces him to stay on the bed.
"Woh there, the dragons are fine. And last I saw, Sora was training in the courtyard with Riyu, and I think everyone else is down in the new dragon stables." Kai says.
"Wait. Sora's training? By herself?" Lloyd says, bewildered.
"Yeah, she said something about having a responsibility to use the powers she has or whatnot." Kai explains. He then takes a closer look at his husband, and asks in a more serious tone, "Are you ok? Zane told us what happened with the Source Dragon and all but… I want to hear it from you too."
"It's hard to explain." Lloyd admits, rubbing his temples with his fingers, "I'm still trying to figure it out myself. I saw things. Visions. And they weren't all good."
Lloyd's about to go on when a slight creak draws his attention over to the bedroom door where he spots a flash of orange disappear from the slightly ajar door. Lloyd chuckles slightly and says, "Hold on a sec Kai, I think someone else is here to see me. You mind giving us a moment?"
Kai glances at the door and smiles. He gives Lloyd a soft kiss, causing a light blush to appear on the blond's face, and says, "Sure Greenie, I'll go tell the other's that you're awake. I'm sure Zane is gonna want to examine you anyway."
Once Kai leaves, Lloyd looks over at the entrance and says, "You can come in, Arin, I know you're there."
After a moment or two, Arin slowly comes out from behind the door, looking slightly embarrassed. Lloyd pats the edge of the bed, urging his young student to come over and sit. Once he's seated, Lloyd takes a long look at him, noticing how sad he looks.
"You ok?" He asks.
Arin looks up, a slightly surprised look on his face, "Yeah, I'm fine. Glad to see you're awake."
Lloyd gives him another look, frowning slightly, "You don't seem fine. What's wrong?"
Arin sighs and says in a sad voice, "I knew when all this started, it was probably temporary, cuz the other ninja were gone."
Lloyd tilts his head slightly at Arin, asksing, "What was temporary?"
Arin gestures around the room, saying, "Training, learning, me becoming a ninja. I get it. If you have all of them, you don't need me anymore." He looks down at his lap, fiddling with a throwing star in his hands.
Lloyd shakes his head, not believing what he's hearing. He rests his hands on Arin's shoulders, gently turning him to face him. Using one hand, he tips Arin's chin up to look him straight in the eyes as he says, "Arin, you're an amazing ninja. You taught yourself Spinjitzu. You have the potential to be an incredible ninja. But all this isn't really about training, is it?"
Arin sighs again and admits, "I lost my parents in the Merge. I guess I've been trying to find a new family ever since."
Lloyd smiles and pulls Arin in for a hug, much to the surprise of the kid. He lets out a shocked squeak before finally hugging Lloyd back. Once they pull apart, Lloyd says, "You have found a new family, Arin. You, Sora, Riyu, even Wyldfyre. One thing I know about family is that it's just like being a ninja. There's always room to grow."
Lloyd pulls out his old gi hood from a drawer in his nightstand. Then, to Arin's surprise, hands it to him. Arin looks from Lloyd to the hood and back again, as if checking that it's really for him. Lloyd nods his head, and Arin jumps up in excitement, giving Lloyd another hug before running out of the room to go and tell Sora.
Lloyd chuckles as he watches his student go. He's really starting to get attached to the kid, to both of them. Sighing, he lays back down on the bed. His mind wanders back to his visions and a frown crosses his face as he thinks about them. He hopes that they'll end up not meaning anything. But as he thinks about the graveyard with all the ninja hoods, an uneasy feeling settles in his gut, somehow he knows that it's important and doesn't mean nothing.
