Chapter Thirteen: Proof of Worth
"Nice entrance Kale" Cayde said as he stepped back and looked the hunter up and down. "How's the sniper treating ya? Still in working order I hope?" the hunter nodded quickly "Yes sir, I'm loving it. It is very useful for whittling down numbers from range before actually going in" Cayde put a hand on his chin and nodded slowly. "That's what I like to hear! Alright, come on over team. This is your new temporary member! Why don't you introduce yourself"
The hunter turned toward where the rest of the fireteam was waiting and nodded. "Godslayer, good to be working alongside you" Tempest nodded to the hunter as she got up to walk over to the table "You too Arthur, it's been too long since our last mission together" the Titan laughed "Indeed! I have missed having a good sniper watching my back" he responded. Kale nodded and looked to the other three approaching him "Sorry but I don't think I've met you three, Kale-09. Hunter scout and sniper. At your service" the hunter gave a quick bow and stood back to his full height while removing his helmet. His face was plain silver with bright yellow eyes, a dull red glow lit up his mouth as he spoke. "So... don't all introduce yourselves at once, who's going last?" he joked.
"Dabi, I'm technically not a guardian yet. But I've proven myself strong enough to take on this mission. I'll be trusting you to cover my back Kale-09" Dabi said, extending a hand to shake the hunters. "Just Kale will be fine" the Exo said happily as he accepted the handshake. "I'm Kanohi, looking forward to working with you" the silver haired girl introduced herself with a mock salute which the hunter returned with a smirk. "And this is my guardian, Morimitsu. I'm Solasi, his ghost" Mori gave a small wave as his ghost buzzed around his head. "Got it, Morimitsu, Kanohi and Dabi" Kale said as he pointed from one to the other. "Good to know"
Zavala spoke up to call the fireteam over, then once he had everyone's attention he tapped the holo-table and a map popped up from the surface. "Alright, lets get underway. At 0940 hours yesterday this entire sector was suddenly and violently invaded by massive Vex forces. This portion of the European dead zone normally isn't of much importance, however that changed two days ago when you three activated what was at the time an undiscovered Vex teleportation structure. Now it has become a vital link to your world that we must have under our control. Without it there will be no sending you all home" the commander paused to let that fact sink in. "With that said, I agreed to have you all take this assignment because it means something to you personally. This fireteam will be the ones taking this sector back from the enemy. Fire-team Horizon. Led by Tempest, will insert in this location" Zavala pointed to a spot near the edge of the sector "And push into this small canyon system, Kale has confirmed the presence of a signal scrambling protocol being used from this location. It is blocking all transmat signals and all low energy communication signals and scans. Your mission today is to push into the caves where the scrambling protocol is being broadcast from and take it out at the source. Once we have this area back under our control then we can begin pushing forward for the portal site"
Fire-team Horizon looked at each other and nodded. "I leave the exact details of your attack strategy up to you. Cayde will be running tactical for you and I will keep an ear on the situation. We have a supply ship loaded up and ready to support you with ammo drops if you need it. Good luck, and keep your eyes up guardians" With that Commander Zavala dismissed them and moved onto other tasks. "I'll be watching from your helmet cams, keep em turned on and transmitting. Comms may get spotty once you get inside, but I trust you all to handle it" Cayde said as the fireteam turned to leave. "Thanks Cayde, see you on the other side" Tempest replied before leading her fire-team toward the hanger.
The fire-team walked to the hanger together, there were two jump-ships waiting for them when they arrived. "Alright, I've only got the one seat in my ship so I'll be flying solo. Sorry everyone" Kale announced as he walked backwards towards a very sleek dark grey ship. Morimitsu waved to the hunter who returned the gesture just before he jumped up onto the ship's wing. Everyone else walked towards a much larger and bulkier looking ship that had a ramp leading up into a small troop bay with enough seating for exactly one fire-team of guardians. Mori took a seat beside Kanohi who had sat down and immediately started checking over her ammo and rifle to make sure she was ready. She wore a set of more lightweight Titan armour, the navy blue and bronze colouring really didn't suit her in Mori's opinion. But bad looking armour was better than none, her rifle was a scout rifle called Nameless Midnight. It was a standard Vanguard model that had decent ammo capacity and hit hard enough that it was definitely worth the weight of lugging it around. The rifle had been painted in all black with small orange details on it and was covered in scratches. This particular weapon had seen combat a fair few times and had made it back to banshee's hands, it would be reliable if anything.
Dabi sat opposite Morimitsu, his armour was made of synth-weave instead of plate armour like Kanohi's. The dull grey fabric could take a fair amount of damage for how little solid armour there was in it, Dabi hadn't liked the look of the grey armour and so had chose to wear his trench coat over top of it. He held his Scathelock auto rifle in his hands and checked it over a few times like how he'd been taught to. The rifle had been donated to banshee by another guardian after being freshly painted, the black coat gleamed as if it was brand new. Dabi had seen it lying on a workbench while Banshee was giving them a choice of first weapon, he pointed it out and the old gunsmith had decided to let him have it. Tempest stowed her two weapons in a wall mounted locker before heading to the cockpit, she had bought along an auto rifle called Shadow Price and single shot tube grenade launcher called Salvager's Salvo. The auto rifle was a dark grey colour while the launcher was painted white with blue marking on it.
Morimitsu looked down at his holster, the Eyasluna sat in its place. The guardian really didn't want to draw the weapon but knew he may be forced to during missions, better to get used to it again quickly so that he wouldn't be slowed down and put people in danger. 'Sol, you there?' Mori thought 'Always guardian. What's on your mind?' the ghost replied. 'What happens to us if I can't fight anymore? If I don't have the ability to protect people...' silence met his question, after a short time his ghost replied. 'If you cannot protect people then we find another way to be useful until a time when your drive returns. Don't let it get you down guardian, there are many ways you can help people without having to fight' Morimitsu thought it over for a few minutes. The only sound being the hum of the drop ship engines, then suddenly the whine of the engines whirred to a far higher pitch and the feline could feel the ship decelerate. Cayde's voice came over the intercom system in the ship. "Alright alright, communication will be very limited and unstable down there until you guys crack the interference. Once you do that I can get a full scan of the place. Stay safe down there guardians, I need someone to eat ramen with tonight. Fire-team Horizon, the light is green. Good luck!" Tempest joined the rest of the team in the troop bay and retrieved her weapons from the rack, checking each one before securing them to mag-locks on her armour. "Alright, lets do this hard and fast people. If anyone gets hurt we back off and heal up. Give those Vex hell, and closest one to dying buys dinner tonight" she said as she addressed her team. Everyone present nodded and put their helmets on. "Copy that" came Kale's reply through comms. Then the ship shuddered as it landed, the ramp lowered and the door opened. 'Here we go' Morimitsu thought to himself as he followed Dabi down the ramp into the forest clearing.
The team had landed in a clearing just large enough for two jump ships, they had a long walk to the site they were attacking. It took just over forty minutes to reach a position where the cave entrance was in view, Morimitsu noticed a pair of goblins outside. Having fought the Vex so many times he knew there were two more around the corner. Maybe a Minotaur too. He grabbed his hand cannon and raised it to take the goblins out, as he sighted up on a unit's head he stopped. He couldn't do it, not yet, the memory of the dying alien was too fresh in his mind. With a shaky breath he pointed his gun down to the ground, then replaced it in it's holster and secured it there. "Guardian..." Solasi whispered worriedly, Morimitsu shook his head and looked at the rest of the team. All of them had weapons raised and were advancing at the threat, he followed but stayed behind. Tempest, Kanohi and Dabi all opened fire, two goblins fell instantly to the automatic fire and a third fell just as it turned to engage. The last goblin of the group got two shots off at Arthur before the crack of Kale's sniper rifle sounded and it was snapped in two.
"Nicely done, weapons free Horizon, give em hell" Tempest commanded before she and Arthur rushed at the cave entrance. The rest of the group ran to keep up with them as they rounded the corner and entered the mouth of the cave. Arthur charged solar light in his hand and threw it, the ball of light hit the ground and exploded forth in a line of solar light that left the ground and four goblins burning. He ran past the felled enemies and slid to a stop while deploying a light barricade. Solar and void energy began crashing against it and dispersing across its surface. Kale swapped to his smg and slid through the barrier, he opened fire with the smaller weapon and bullets started pelting a Minotaur while he ran. Tempest swapped to her grenade launcher and fired a shot over the barricade, it ricocheted off the walls and landed with a blast at a goblin's feet. The machine was thrown sky high and torn apart. Dabi and Kanohi both push past the defensive position and open fire on the Minotaur, their shots connect and eventually the machine goes down. Mori threw a smoke bomb to give Kale some cover and rushed over to join the hunter on the other side of the small opening. Blasts of solar energy came flying through the smoke and both Kale and Mori got hit a few times, it wasn't painful thanks to their armour taking most of it. "Little help!" Kale called while firing blindly back through the smoke cloud. "I'll take care of them!" Arthur replied while he rushed forward with his massive great sword in hand, he disappeared through the smoke cloud and all the feline could hear was metal hitting metal, an explosion and the gunshots ceasing. "Got them, but there are more incoming!" the titan called. Kale and Morimitsu rushed into the smoke and pushed out the other side, Kale swapping to his sniper rifle and taking a couple of shots while Mori threw a scatter grenade into a group of four goblins and a praetorian, the machines all were torn apart by the blast and disintegrated in void light. Arthur swung his blade and cut into the side of the last Minotaur, then dragged his blade out and swung again shattering the machine.
"Alright everyone, take a second to reload and rest. Morimitsu, Kale, come here" Tempest commanded as she reloaded her own weapon. The feline followed the hunter over to Tempest who formed a healing rift as they approached. Both of the injured guardians stepped into the rift, Morimitsu sighed as the warm feeling of healing light caressed his skin and healed the burns he had received. Once he was fully healed he grasped both of his knives and looked at Tempest, his ghost knew exactly what he was about to do before he even told her. "Tempest, we are gonna take point for this next room, act as the distraction while you all tear them apart from range" Solasi said, nobody replied. "Comm check, one two" she said. Silence.
The purple ghost materialised above her guardian's shoulder "Is anyone else experiencing comm interference?" she called to the squad. "Affirmative, we can't get through to Cayde. All ghosts, try to get through that interference. If you can crack the frequency then share the sequence you used to get through with everyone else. Guardians, let's push forward" Tempest commanded "We can take point" Solasi said before dissipating into her guardian again. The feline rounded the corner with Arthur at his tail, literally, he walked past a boulder in the middle of the tunnel. Morimitsu's ears pricked up at the sound of a charging weapon, he instinctively leapt forward and rolled back to his feet as two bolts of solar energy splashed against the rock wall where he had just been standing. 'Too close' he thought as the Arthur charged around the other side of the boulder, twin swords in his hands. The titan took a swing at each goblin and carved them in two one after the other. Tempest and Kale rounded the corner as Arthur pointed behind the feline and yelled "Behind you!"
Morimitsu spun around and watched a pair of goblins fall to automatic gunfire from Kale and a grenade landed beside another pair and they both were hit with two bolts of arc light and fell to the floor with electricity sparking through their chassis'. Tempest then raised her rifle and fired at another goblin with Kanohi, it tanked a few hits and stayed standing until Morimitsu put a knife through it's core and then spun around it and stabbed another goblin unit in the glass container in its stomach. The feline caught the falling machine and used it to block a few bolts from two more of it's brethren, Kanohi and Dabi sighted up and tried to fire on the units attacking Morimitsu but couldn't get a clean shot past their friend and didn't even hit the targets. "There's a Cyclops over here! Kale help me with this thing!" Kanohi yelled as she dove for cover and swapped her rifle for the launcher hanging from her belt. "Copy that lead" the hunter replied taking up a position behind a rock outcropping. While he swapped to his sniper rifle he took a good look at the area, there was a fork in the road here. One side went into a wide open room that looked a couple hundred feet across at least, the other route went around a bend and he couldn't see much. Just the three newbies who were currently engaged with some units there, the open route had a single perfectly square stone rising from the floor about fifty feet into the room. It would make a good position to attack the room from, problem was there was a stationary Vex unit on top of it. A Cyclops, basically a semi automatic void explosive launcher with armour plating that rivalled a light tank. 'Luckily' Kale thought as he sighted up on the massive unit 'They have one glaringly obvious weak spot' He fired. The bullet struck the centre of the unit's eye just as a grenade from Tempest's launcher exploded beside it. Armour fragments flew in all directions as the machine went haywire and fired shot after shot all around. Kale waited, it would sit still eventually.
Morimitsu readied himself and dropped the dead goblin, rushing to his left and then darting at the squad of vex he coated his blades with his light and struck. One slash tore the first goblin in half, a stab rendered the second lifeless, the remaining units all fired at the feline with one getting a lucky hit on his right thigh. The guardian hissed in pain while watching a glowing ball of solar light land among the vex shooting at him, it was followed by a second and the entire group exploded violently in an impressive ball of flames. The guardian turned to the titan who was running toward him "GET DOWN!" Arthur yelled as he grabbed the feline and dragged him back, throwing up another Barricade just in time to block a blast of void energy. Mori looked at the dissipating smoke on the other side of the translucent wall and then to Arthur, he bowed to the man in thanks and received a slap on the back. "Don't mention it guardian, Tempest wants you over that side with Dabi" he said pointing back toward where Dabi was already joining in with the attack on the Cyclops. "I've got the other two, don't worry about the little lady. She is safe with me" he said giving the feline a little push to get him moving. Kanohi came jogging the opposite direction, she slowed down and gave Mori a nod as she pointed her rifle behind him and let loose a few rounds. 'She'll be fine, keep moving guardian' Solasi said calmly.
"...et through to them, it's been too long they should've broken the encryption by now" Cayde's voice crackled to life over intercoms once again. "Cayde?!" Mori's ghost exclaimed "Little Star?" came the surprised reply "It's Solasi! What is with you and your silly nicknames?" Solasi shot back "Sure sure, how's things going? Obviously someone broke the encryption but how's the situation looking?" Mori dashed up beside Dabi and looked around the corner, there were a lot of vex units coming towards them. He could see a perfect spot to hold from, if he could get to it. Another grenade from Tempest's launcher hit the Cyclops dead centre, more metal shards flew in all directions but still the damned thing held strong and fired back defiantly. "Not great, how long do we have till Vex reinforcements come from our six?" the warlock asked while loading another grenade into the tube. "Around twelve minutes by my estimate, other fireteams are on route to intercept and slow them down. Try to be as fast as possible kiddos"
Mori sheathed one knife and formed a vortex grenade while getting ready to run, Dabi was firing around the corner at the many vex approaching while Tempest tried to destroy the Cyclops with her launcher. It was working slowly but if it kept up they would be overrun. Mori decided to break the stalemate and bolted around the corner into the fray. "Mori!" "Kid!" both of his teammates yelled as they watched him bolt into the hail of solar blasts, he took a few light hits to hit armour and slid into cover beneath the Cyclops. He then peeked around one side of the wall and threw his grenade into a squad of goblins before ducking under cover again. Tempest shook her head and fired again "You are insane" she muttered. "He's got a point though, look at the position he's gained" Dabi replied while rushing out from his position and following Mori's lead, he fired his rifle as he ran taking out a few of the goblins around and then raised his left arm to the Cyclops that was now looking straight at him. He released a quick torrent of flame at the machine and slid into cover giving the feline a thumbs up as he took one side and began laying down covering fire. Tempest looked at the two idiots fighting tooth and nail to keep their forward position under control, she had decided that people from the other earth were bloody insane. "Are we actually about to do this?" her ghost asked her with a deadpan tone "Yep... I'm gonna regret this aren't I" she replied as she sprinted from her cover, throwing a celestial fire at the Cyclops as she ran. The machine glowed a bright orange with blue hints and then exploded in a massive ball of fire, both Dabi and Morimitsu ducked and covered their ears when the machine detonated. Tempest slid into cover between them "Hey, how's the weather over here?" she asked sarcastically as she turned a goblin to scrap with her auto rifle. "Super heated with a chance of killer robots" Dabi replied with a laugh, his rifle clicked empty and he ducked back into cover to swap magazines.
The group heard the snap of Kale's sniper rifle sound twice and then an explosion from where they had come from. "Sounds like they dealt with the other Cyclops" Tempest said "Team two report, what's your status over there Arthur?" she requested while swapping from target to target, tearing goblins apart. She then threw a trip mine into the fray, Morimitsu throwing a vortex grenade past her to assist with cleaning up the small fries. "Under heavy fire over here... Argh. Damnit that hurt" he replied as a group of goblins detonated the trip mine and a large explosion ripped through their armour, a Praetorian got caught in the Vortex grenade and dragged into its core. Tempest took the opportunity to tear it apart with her rifle, the machine collapsed as her bullets tore straight through its weakened plating. Dabi shattered another goblin and ducked as a hail of solar bolts nearly hit him, Morimitsu spun his knives in his hands and dashed out of cover. He ran between two units and sliced them both in half with light empowered slashes, another pair of goblins fired at him but he rolled underneath the blasts and drove his knives into their cores. A beam of energy nearly hit the feline but he blinked backwards and sidestepped into his hiding spot beside Dabi once more. The feline dropped a knife into its sheath and charged some light in his hand, then he released the energy around himself and formed a healing rift for himself and his teammates.
Kanohi was running behind Arthur as he charged around a bend in the tunnel, energy bolts started flying as soon as she rounded the corner. "Team two report, what's your status over there Arthur?" Tempest asked in her ear, Arthur replied "Under heavy fire over here" a goblin shot him on the shoulder and then an explosive round detonated on his abdomen sending him to his hands and knees "Argh. Damnit that hurt" the titan grunted before getting up and placing a barricade on the ground between himself and the vex. Kanohi joined him and helped him up before peeking around the edge of the barrier and aimed at a goblin, she pulled the trigger and her weapon clicked loudly and did nothing. Arthur grabbed her armour dragged her back into cover "Your weapon jammed, you'll need to clear it before doing anything else" he instructed, never once taking eyes off the approaching vex. "How do I do that?" the silver haired girl replied, Kale walked up beside her and fired his sniper rifle at a Praetorian unit before dropping to one knee and reloading. "Just take the magazine out, clear the chamber. You may need to pull the jammed round out manually. Then re-insert the magazine and rack the charging handle again" the guardian instructed while reloading his own weapon. Kanohi did exactly as he instructed and had her weapon ready to go pretty quickly, she raised her rifle at the enemy and fired two shots in quick succession. Two units fell to her fire and she smiled to herself, she was having too much fun with this.
Dabi leaned around the edge of the rock and fired into the ever closer vex units, his rifle clicked empty after a few shots and he spun into cover while clearing the magazine and dropping it in favour of a full one. Inserting the new mag into his weapon he primed the handle and looked around the corner just as a smoke bomb went off 'Damn it kid, can't see a damn thing now' he thought as he kept his weapon trained on the wall of smoke. "Dabi, I'm going to ping enemy positions on your HUD. Fire exactly where you see the blue dots appear" Solasi instructed "Copy that, give me a target" he replied. Within seconds eight blue dots appeared on his helmet display, he wasted no time opening fire on the tightest packed group. Without being able to see he was doing damage but only a few markers actually winked out. Suddenly solar blasts came flying back through the smoke cloud at him, he was forced to retreat into cover. After a second he heard something clatter on the floor and the pop of exploding void light. Then Morimitsu appeared around the corner missing a knife and looking a bit out of breath. "They are getting too close for comfort" Tempest yelled while firing into a large group of vex. A Praetorian unit hit her with its suppressing beam and she gasped as her light disappeared from her body. Then the beam cut through her armour and burned her on the centre of her chest, the warlock fell backward screaming in pain. Her rifle clattered to the ground as she tried to scramble backwards, Dabi and Mori rushed out and grabbed her to drag her back to cover. The burned man leaned her up against the wall and fired his rifle around the corner, barely dodging the beam of energy fired back. Morimitsu was trying to get the warlock to respond, she was in too much pain to answer him. She felt her light return after a second and she formed a flash bang, then threw it around the corner. The grenade detonated and all the gunfire stopped, Tempest stepped out and grabbed her rifle before running as fast as she could manage towards the previous room. Dabi and Morimitsu followed her closely, the burned man firing his rifle back at the stunned vex the whole way. The trio got around a corner to safety where Tempest dropped a healing rift and promptly sat down in it, sighing as the warm feeling healed the damage she had taken. Morimitsu keeled down beside her and placed a worried hand on her shoulder, she looked at him. She couldn't see his expression behind the six eyes on his helmet, but she knew he would be worried. She nodded slowly and placed a hand on his "I'll live, hurts like a bitch though" she said bitterly. She watched as the felines shoulders started shaking and he clutched his stomach, he raised a thumb at her as he laughed silently. She couldn't help but join in "I guess you've felt this before?" she laughed at him he nodded as he calmed down "I'm sorry for your loss, how's Dabi doing over there?" she asked while looking around the feline at their other teammate. He was actively clearing a jam in his rifle, once he got the magazine back in he racked the weapon and aimed it at the enemy. Then immediately lowered it and started the process again, a string of curses could be heard over the comms as his rifle jammed for the second time in a row. "Guess we should probably help him" Tempest laughed, amused with his misfortune. Morimitsu nodded and the pair ran back into the fray. It only took a couple of minutes to finish off the group attacking them, Arthur had appeared behind the group and cleaved a Minotaur clean in two from top to bottom with his sword. The fireteam reloaded and looked toward the three remaining vex units.
Wyverns, three of them, they were each located in a force field of their own that forced the guardians to fight them at close range. In each arena was a pair of consoles, Cayde informed them that hacking each pair of consoles in the three arenas would clear the interference and allow the vanguard to set up a transmat zone and get more guardians in the area to secure it. The plan was simple, Morimitsu and Kale were going to go into the far left zone and use Mori's void light to become invisible. They would have their ghosts hack the consoles and run for the second objective without even fighting that unit. When they arrived the whole fireteam would enter the second arena and unleash absolute hell on the second Wyvern, hopefully they would destroy it instantly. The third would prove to be the biggest problem, they would have to burn it down the old fashioned way.
Once everyone was in position Tempest gave the go-ahead and Mori threw a smoke bomb at the ground. The initial burst of light made both himself and Kale invisible, they got past the first Wyvern and released their ghosts to begin the hack. The rest of the fireteam waited with held breath as they watched the pair standing nervously at the feet of the large vex unit. The ghosts confirmed a completed objective and the two guardians started booking it. As they exited the small arena the invisibility effect wore off and they were under immediate fire from the Vex unit. The rest of the fireteam advanced into the second arena and unleashed upon the Wyvern in the middle. A storm grenade landed underneath it hitting it with bolts of lightning every second, Dabi bathed the thing in azure hellfire and Arthur ran at it and cleaved through one of it's legs. The machine crumbled under the assault without getting to fight back. Tempest and Arthur released their ghosts to hack the second objective and the team moved for the third as Mori and Kale caught up. Kale got shot in the back by the first Wyvern and stumbled, he caught himself and kept running. "I'm fine! Keep moving!" he yelled as he raced to catch up. They all entered the third arena and Arthur dropped a barricade as the Wyvern fired at him, the blasts rippled across his shield and Kanohi and Kale joined him, firing their weapons at the machine. Morimitsu threw a vortex and the armour on the machine started to melt slowly, Tempest fired her grenade launcher and the massive construct staggered. Arthur and Morimitsu both charged forward with blades drawn, taking advantage of the moment of weakness they carved the machines legs clean off. The massive unit fell to the floor and Dabi ran over and blasted fire at it until it stopped moving. The third objective was secured and Morimitsu looked up at the last standing Wyvern. It had stopped advancing, the signature white light appeared in the air around it and the feline knew it was retreating. He sighed in relief and sat down.
"Well done guardians, we have teams dropping in now to secure the location. Come home and rest, you have all done very well today. I will have your payment and some new gear waiting for you when you arrive" Zavala informed the fire team. "Thank you sir, Fire team Horizon out" Tempest replied before cutting the line. "Alright, everyone up for a celebration tonight?" she asked turning to her squad "I feel like I could sleep for a week after that, but if there's food I'm in" Kanohi replied as she flopped onto the ground beside Mori. "A celebration sounds like a fine idea!" Arthur laughed as he clapped Dabi on the back, the burned man being launched forward a step and rubbing his back as he glared at the laughing titan. "Sure, I'll come along to keep the kids out of trouble" he replied. "Alright, how about we get outta here first though" Kale said with a smirk as he removed his helmet. "Good idea, call in the ships Jay" Tempest said to her ghost "Let's move out"
