The school day started off the same as any other: Waking up to the noise of her team leader's whistle, showering, getting dressed in Beacon's uniform, and heading to the cafeteria for breakfast. After that were the classes: First, History and Legends of Remnant with Professor Oobleck, followed by Plant Sciences with Professor Peach, Combat Class with Professor Goodwitch, and ending on Grimm Studies with Professor Port. For the first time since the year started, however, the professor brought a grimm to class, allowing a single student to take it down as a demonstration. Right as Port had asked for volunteers, a single pale hand shot up, all heads turning to the Schnee heiress. She makes her way down after Port accepts her willingness to participate, returning after a few minutes in her usual combat dress with Myrtenaster in hand.
"Well then, Miss Schnee! Are you ready to face your opponent?" Professor Port readies his blunderaxe to strike off the cage's lock as he looks to Weiss. After getting a nod from her, followed by several cheers from the rest of her team, he nods and swings the weapon down, breaking the lock right before the boarbatusk inside slams into the door, knocking it off its hinges and careening towards the student.
"Don't look at me like that. I'm fine!"
Team RWBY was back in their dorm room for the afternoon, having just left the cafeteria after eating lunch. Or at least, after trying to eat lunch despite all eyes being focused on a certain white haired heiress. News spread throughout Beacon very quickly of the poor girl getting slammed into the wall by a boarbatusk's charged roll in front of the whole class, her aura shattering on impact. It was only thanks to her leader speeding down with her semblance and kicking it away, as well as a well placed shot from Professor Port, that Weiss wasn't in the infirmary, having only sustained a few scratches and bruises from the grimm and the impact.
"You are not, Ice Queen!" Yang crosses her arms as she yells, watching Weiss roll over in her bed, turning her back to the trio.
"Yang is right, Weiss." Ruby plants her hands on her hips. "What were you thinking, volunteering for that demonstration when your aura was still recovering from combat class?! First you fought Cardin, then you asked to keep going until Pyr accepted your challenge! You're lucky JNPR is helping tone down the rumors that started!"
Blake puts a hand on Ruby's shoulder, turning her away and towards the door. "Let's just be happy that nothing serious really happened, okay? She walked away from it, right?"
Ruby huffs as she opens the door. "Just don't push it, Weiss. I know this isn't the best arrangement for us, but Professor Ozpin thinks I am more suited to be the leader. Running yourself ragged isn't going to help you." She leaves the room, Blake and Yang staring at the still open door in shock.
A faint sniff is heard as Weiss curls herself into a ball, hidden under her covers as she whispers mostly to herself. "I didn't... it wasn't... this..." 'This... isn't right...? I... killed it... and we... had a fight...?'
"Try harder. She's important to mother and we can't fail."
"I know, but I can't do much when she's still fighting."
I groan as I try to open my eyes, the crust of sleep doing its damned best to make it harder than it should be. I hear faint voices nearby, though slightly muffled as if we were separated by a door. The voices stop for a moment, before picking up again too low for me to hear. 'So they can hear me, too... But who...' I hear a door open nearby, followed by the door to where I lay, and I feel a gust of warm wind flow across my face as someone approaches.
"He-Hello?" I call out weakly to whoever it is, trying again to open my eyes. "Wh-who's... there?" I manage to crack them open a small amount, only getting a glimpse of a stone ceiling before whoever it is uses their hand to cover them again.
"Just rest up, Weiss. You'll be better in no time." As the voice speaks, sleep starts to get a hold of me again. "Maybe you'll remember everything then."
"I'm doing fine. I have top marks in all my classes and the professors all agree that I'm doing great in managing the others."
"That's good to hear, Weiss. We'll talk more at the festival." Weiss looks at the computer screen with her sister's face on it, sitting in the CCT on a secured line. "Oh, don't be so shocked. We're escorting the participants from the Academy as well as providing security for the event. I'll see you in a few months." With those last words, Winter ended the call, leaving Weiss staring in shock at her own reflection in the screen.
"Well, that could've gone worse, Weiss."
She looks to her right where Pyrrha was sitting, leaning on the desktop with her head propped up in her hand. After a moment, Weiss relaxes with a sigh as she slumps back into her own chair. "I know. Never thought I would have lied to her... Your team is lucky to only have one energetic maniac."
"Well, one of us has experience handling people like Nora, and one has experience handling Nora herself." The redhead chuckles at that. "Though neither of them is me. I heard Ruby and Yang have a lot to catch up on?"
Weiss groans as she shifts forward, burying her face in her hands. "Apparently they've been separated for the last ten years, and Ruby claims she can't remember most of it. I'm telling you, she's hiding something important, and Yang doesn't want to believe it."
Pyrrha shifts closer, resting a hand on Weiss' shoulder. "Or... Maybe Yang believes you but chooses to ignore it over the fact someone she thought dead is alive and well? Or, and I know you don't want to hear this, maybe you're just overthinking this and there's nothing there?"
She shakes her head before leaning back in the chair with a heavy sigh. "I... I don't know, Pyr. It just feels like I'm having to walk on eggshells to not get my head blown off by Yang or silently judged by Blake." She shifts over and leans on the redhead's shoulder. "I just don't know why the headmaster insists on that stupid initiation deciding teams... Or how he picks the leaders of each team."
Pyrrha lays her head to rest on Weiss' as she hums. "You know, Jaune may be able to give you advice on this kind of situation. He did have to live with seven sisters after all." Weiss crosses her arms and pouts, her reflection visible in the blank screen in front of the duo, causing Pyrrha to chuckle. "Oh, don't be like that. I'm sure he has something that could help you with the others. Come on. Let's go ask him now, princess." She stands up, pulling the heiress up with her and dragging her back towards the entrance. As they leave, Weiss groans while trying to hide a blush behind her free hand.
I groan as I shake my head, shaking off a pair of hands that were trying to hold on to my temples.
"She's awake again." I hear a voice right next to me as the door creaks open. Footsteps echo through the room as I try to open my eyes again, getting a glimpse of the ceiling once more. "You requested my help, but I just learned I could do... this."
"It's okay, Em. Take a break for a bit." I catch a glimpse of green hair and dark skin as a chair scrapes the ground. "I know it hasn't been even a month yet, but we need her."
I hear footsteps as the green haired girl, Em, leaves, and turn my head as the chair scrapes again, being moved closer to my side. I see blonde hair in a familiar rabbit hoodie. "J-Jaune...? W-what...?"
As I try and sit up, he rests a hand on my shoulder and gently pushes me back down with a sad smile. "Easy there, Snow Angel. We managed to save you and get that wound treated, but I can't have you ripping it open again."
"W-we...? Who's... We...?" It hurts to speak, but I push the question out, even as the pain forces tears down the side of my head.
"Me, Emerald, and a few others. After the Fall, we found a place the grimm don't reach yet. Though we can't contact anyone outside the kingdom since the CCT has been destroyed..."
"E-Emerald...? Fall...?"
He rubs the back of his head as chuckles. "Right, Em was one of the Haven students. Her semblance lets one recover lost memories, but only if the person is willing. You took quite a blow to the head, and were trying to kill everyone when we found you. The few things I managed to hear before you fell unconscious were... worrying... You didn't know where you were or who we were..."
I twitch a hand, trying to move it up towards my neck as I try to speak again to ask one more question. 'Why? Why does everything hurt so much?' Jaune seemed to understand what I was about to say because he set my hand back down, shushing me.
"When we found you, you also had lost a lot of blood... And were still losing a lot from the cut on your neck... We don't know what caused it, but we know that if we help you recover faster, we can find what, or even who, did. So please, let Em help?" He looks at me with those sad eyes as I take in everything he just told me, letting out a long sigh as I nod. He smiles softly as he stands up. "I'll be just outside when you wake up. Pyr, too."
I offer a small smile at his words while he walks through the door again, with Emerald waiting until he's gone to re-enter. She doesn't say a word when she sits back down next to me, placing a hand on my head as I feel sleep, and my memories, take me once again.
Team RWBY is sitting in the library as they try to study for their classes. Yang has fallen asleep while leaning back in her chair, Blake was reading her filth she claims is art, and Weiss was trying, and failing, to tutor their leader on the subjects she missed.
"You need to know which plants are good for you in case you get lost!" Weiss all but slams her hand onto the books on local and exotic flora and fauna currently resting on the table. "What if you run out of aura and can't just speed to the nearest town? What if you're injured, alone, and don't have your weapon with you?!"
Ruby just crosses her arms as she glares at the heiress. "None of that will ever happen, Weiss-cicle. I know my limits, and so I won't run myself to the point of not having any aura. This is pointless."
Weiss begins seething at the nickname Ruby and Yang both gave her after their first week as a team, standing up and knocking her own chair over in the process. The noise startles Yang awake and causes Blake to turn her attention away from her book. For a moment, the white and red duo just stare daggers at each other before the former storms away. After leaving the library, Weiss makes her way across the grounds and through the main building until she gets to the roof.
"Why do I have to be the one tutoring a damn child?!" She yells out to no one in particular before sighing and taking a seat to the side of the door. There's silence for a bit before a voice speaks up from just above the door, causing Weiss to stiffen in response.
"I'm assuming you're complaining about Ruby?"
Weiss looks up to see a familiar mop of blonde hair looking down at her, releasing a sigh. "Yes, Jaune, I am. Sorry, I didn't intend to barge in on your little time alone."
The knight lets out a chuckle as he jumps down and takes a seat in the center of the space, facing her. "It's alright, Weiss, really. I'm just surprised you're complaining about having to teach her instead of keeping her focused. Guess my advice worked?"
She nods, relaxing a bit as she leans back on her hands. "Indeed. But to think you grew up with seven sisters, I couldn't imagine such a thing, let alone believe you of all people survived." She winces a bit. "N-not that I'm saying-"
"It's not your fault," Jaune says, cutting her off as he raises a hand, a sad smile on his face. "No one expected the Grimm and bandits to attack together, least of all the headmaster of Haven." He shakes his head. "But, it helped me get here, where I met so many kind people, despite not having my aura at first, and despite still not knowing my semblance."
"Yeah, you're doing surprisingly well despite all that." She offers the blonde a smile.
He rubs the back of his head as he laughs again. "It's all thanks to you and Pyr, really. You're giving me combat advice, and Pyr is giving me combat experience. I don't think I'd be half as good without help from both of you."
A/N Hey everyone, slight apologies for the slightly shorter chapter. But I decided to end it there as I don't want to keep adding things for some arbitrary word count, and to also keep some things for future chapters instead. I hope you enjoyed this Weiss-centric chapter, and look forward to the next one I've got in the works.
In case you've missed it, I also have a work on AO3 where I post responses to writing prompts I find on Tumblr. Those are considered canon to the AU but more likely than not will not find an actual place in the story itself. And if you wish to see teasers for upcoming chapters, my Tumblr ( rwby-the-life-of-a-fang) is somewhat active, and you can also go there to ask me questions regarding the AU and whatnot. See you all next time.
Ciao~!
