Chapter XI
Two years after Arwen and Aragorn's marriage, Eruanna, her parents and her uncles rode to the Grey Havens along with Gandalf, Glorfindel, Elrond, Celeborn, Galadriel, Bilbo and Frodo (who would be allowed entry to Valinor depite being hobbits). As the ship was preparing to leave, Eruanna swallowed the lump in her throat. Here, she would say goodbye. It wasn't her time to leave and she wouldn't leave. Not while her uncles and her parents were still on Arda.
She watched Elrond take a hand from Elladan and Elrohir. "I know you are not ready to make your choice yet, but please", Elrond said. "Try to make the same choice."
Elladan and Elrohir nodded, knowing where it was coming from. Elrond himself had a twin brother named Elros, the very ancestor of Aragorn who chose a mortal life and had passed away many ages ago. Eruanna had always wanted to know more about him but she never asked Elrond, not wanting to bring any pain to his mind.
Galadriel came up to Eruanna and Eruanna hugged her. "You will make the right choice sweet Úlumiel", Galadriel, holding the only great-grandchild she had and would ever know. She felt a few tears trail down her cheeks. She put her hands on both of Eruanna's cheeks. "Take care of yourself", she said, kissing Eruanna's forehead.
"I will", Eruanna said. "I have always admired and loved you greatly." That was what she needed to tell her. Galadriel smiled and hugged her tightly again. "I love you my darling", Galadriel whispered, before pulling away and embracing Elladan and Elrohir before moving to Hiriel and Legolas.
Elrond finally came to Eruanna. "My angel", he said, taking her hands in his. Eruanna felt tears in her eyes at hearing her nickname Elrond had for her. Eruanna's fair skin gave her an angelic appearance, prompting Elrond to call her his angel for she had brought great joy and beauty into his long life. Elrond lifted Eruanna's palms to his lips and kissed them. "Be strong", he said. "Make the choice that is right for you."
Eruanna couldn't take it. She flung herself into Elrond's arms, hugging him tighter than ever. She was letting go of one grandfather and she would likely lose the other as Thranduil and most of his people were already preparing to sail West. Elrond kissed her head. "I will stay if you want", he said.
Eruanna managed a small smile. Elrond's heart was filled with so much grief yet he was still ready to hang on for her. But Eruanna knew that it would have terrible consequences, thus she shook her head.
"No, there is so much grief in your heart. You cannot stay here, it is not a life I am willing to let you live out. Heal yourself in Valinor, I will be there soon", Eruanna said.
"You don't know that yet", Elrond said softly.
"Fear not, I have a good feeling that we will meet again and when the sun rises in the West and sets in the East, you shall look to the sea and see my boat drifting on the blue waters", Eruanna said. Elrond smiled, though it was tinged with sadness. He even briefly imagined himself in Valinor, seeing Eruanna's ship and running over to greet her.
"Then if you feel we shall meet again, so be it", Elrond said with a watery laugh. "I'm going to miss you."
"And I you", Eruanna said. "Have faith", she whispered to him.
Galadriel went to Glorfindel, who had been watching the whole thing. She placed a hand on Glorfindel's shoulder. "Watch over her if you can", the Lady of Light said. "I will see her to her last days unless she wishes otherwise", Glorfindel declared. Eruanna smiled at him and watched as Celeborn bade Galadriel farewell, promising to meet her in Valinor. Her parents and uncles looked at him in shock. Celeborn smiled, feeling the need to explain himself.
"I am not yet weary, I believe I would like to stay in Imladris for a while", Celeborn explained.
Without thinking, Eruanna hugged her great-grandfather who gladly returned the affection.
Gandalf had taken her aside soon after, for what reason Eruanna Úlumiel did not know but she knew questioning the wizard would either mean no response or an answer that was not entirely direct. Eruanna had excused herself from her family to meet with the wizard.
When they were a few feet away, Gandalf looked at the elven Princess who looked fairer than ever. The young child had grown into a young maiden. Her long black hair was woven with flowers and pearls and her deep blue eyes looked at him with curiosity. She wore a long red dress that trailed on the grass.
"I am to pass into the West. To sail for Aman with your great-grandmother, Galadriel, and grandfather, Elrond", Gandalf spoke with a somber smile. Eruanna closed her eyes and looked down. The time of the elves was ending and soon even she would vanish west, never to be seen again by those in Middle-Earth.
She wasn't going to stay here and wither away whilst her family journeyed West.
"I am glad that Eru restored you to life after your fight with the Balrog. It pleases me to know that you were able to continue helping the free peoples and we now finally get to say a proper goodbye", Eruanna said with a smile.
"I have carried this throughout my adventures, as you know. And I mean to leave it with its rightful heir", Gandalf said. Eruanna looked up at him, her brows furrowing in confusion. Gandalf took out the sword, Glamdring and Eruanna's eyes widened. She remembered her childhood fascination with Gondolin and with the sword that her great-great-grandfather, King Turgon of Gondolin, had carried until his death. The sword Gandalf had taken from a filthy troll hoard and used in his many great deeds.
Gandalf offered her the sword but she shook her head, stepping back. "You should carry it back to him", she said. "Mandos would have restored Turgon to life by now. Carry it and return it to him."
Gandalf chuckled and placed a hand on her shoulder. "This sword belongs to your family. Had Gondolin survived, you would have been its heir, the Queen of Gondolin, a Queen of the Elves", the Maia pressed on. Eruanna chuckled. "I have nothing to earn that title, Mithrandir", she said.
"You may not think that now but you were made for a crown", Gandalf said. "I have watched you, Eruanna Úlumiel. You looked after your people. You used your dragons for good and treated them as if they were your siblings. You love your family above all else and strive to be the heiress everyone deserves. You fought for the elves when Sauron was trying to corrupt you. And let's not forget you helped Thorin's company in the Quest of Erebor." Eruanna smiled softly at the praise and bowed her head.
Again, the Maia offered her the sword and Eruanna took it, briefly unsheathing it to look at the blade in awe. So much the sword had done yet so new it seemed. Eruanna sheathed the sword and curtsied to Gandalf. "Your good deeds shall not be forgotten. I wish you a peaceful journey to the home you once knew", she said. Gandalf bowed his head to her.
Eruanna and her group watched Frodo, Bilbo, Gandalf, Galadriel and Elrond board the ship and it set sail to the Uttermost West. Eruanna raised a hand high in the air as a sign of farewell. Though they were too far from her sight, Elrond, Gandalf and Galadriel both raised a hand, bidding her a silent farewell.
"I'm still conflicted on my choice. I do not wish to leave Arwen, but that would mean the Doom of Men. And I cannot bear to leave Eruanna and Hiriel, but that will sunder me from Arwen", Elrohir confessed.
"I am conflicted as well, muindor. It seems we are not ready yet", Elladan said, sadly. "Eruanna?", the twins turned to their niece.
"I don't want the Doom of Men", Eruanna said. "I do not desire to wither away and die." "You do not know what the future holds for you my daughter", Hiriel said.
"Is Aunt Arwen really going to need us anymore? She has the love of her life and she will have him even in death", Eruanna responded.
"She will need you", Glorfindel spoke up. "She will need all of you, especially when Aragorn passes. She will need the support of her family, you cannot deny her that." Eruanna took in the council of her good friend and sighed.
"You are right, Glorfindel", Eruanna said. "Though my heart still wanders over to the West. But I am not conflicted, I know I will see it one day. Only one thing is clear as of now."
"What is it, darling?", Celeborn asked.
"I-I cannot stay in Imladris any longer. Without daeradar, it is no longer the haven I remember it to be with more and more elves passing West. It is not where I would like to stay until the end of my days."
"Where shall you go then?", Elladan asked, saddened.
"To Eryn Lasgalen. To the land where I was born, I will be home nowhere else", Eruanna said. "But I will visit as much as I can", Eruanna said. "I'm already having my stuff moved as well as my mother's." Elladan and Elrohir turned to Hiriel who spoke up.
"I will also go to live in Eryn Lasgalen but trust me, my sweet brothers, I shall visit when I can", Hiriel said, embracing her brothers.
Her final night in Imladris was the worst night of her life.
Many of the elder elves had departed. All the younger ones elected to stay under the leadership of Elladan and Elrohir. Hiriel had abdicated as heir, wanting to go to Eryn Lasgalen and reside there with her husband and daughter.
Eruanna stumbled over to where her dragons slept. She didn't know what to do. What to think. What to feel.
"He is gone", the words pierced her mind over and over again. "He is gone"
Whenever she needed comfort, her dragons were the ones she would go to. Faroniel and Helegiel were always so comforting. They were the easiest to bond with, unlike Naurion and Sûlion who neither trusted easily nor forgave easily. Ceveniel, the oldest of the siblings, was more reserved in her judgment and rarely got provoked.
All dragons felt the distress of their Mistress. Ceveniel was the first to notice, letting out a sound of alarm at her Mistress's state. But Eruanna only heard one thing echoing in her mind over and over again.
He was gone.
Naurion lifted his large head and purred softly. Eruanna raced over to him, hugging his large snout. Tears slid down her deep blue eyes and Naurion looked at her sadly. He was an elemental dragon but he understood emotions very well. Sûlion made a soft noise, nuzzling her waist and offering comfort in his own way.
"He's gone", Eruanna let out a distressed sob. Her dragons understood her distress. They had gotten on well with Elrond, especially Naurion. The fiery dragon seemed enamored of the calm and patient elven Lord, gladly accepting an apple whenever it was offered to him.
Eruanna Úlumiel had always been a joyful elleth but she had just lost a grandfather. There was no joy left in her now.
Faroniel looked at Eruanna, as if she was asking whether Elrond was truly gone or not. Unlike the beasts of Morgoth, the elemental dragons couldn't talk. But they understood every word an elf, man or orc said.
"He's not dead", Eruanna said. She would be in a more dire state if he had been. "He sailed. He sailed to a land far away to the West where elves live in harmony, where the Valar watches over them, where nothing can hurt them. A land swathed in light and love...", Eruanna described it as her grandfather had in his wonderful stories. "He's with grandmother Celebrian now", Eruanna could only imagine how wonderful the union would be.
She let out a shaky sigh and leaned against Naurion's orange scales. Her mother, Hiriel, told her that she would see Elrond again. But time would only serve to dull the pain until she went to the beautiful shores.
"Eruanna!", came a call.
Eruanna looked up, wearily. It was her uncles, the twins Elladan and Elrohir. The twins raced up to her.
"Eruanna", Elrohir dropped to his knees and pulled his niece close. Eruanna wrapped her arms around him and sobbed.
"There now, Úlumiel", Elladan soothed, dropping to his knees and rubbing her back. "It's alright."
"No!", Eruanna pulled away from her uncles. "No! It's not alright! He's not here Uncle Elladan! He won't ever be here!", she exclaimed.
"Why do I wish for him to be here?", she wondered aloud. "It's selfish of me to do so", her voice lowered to a whisper.
"Eruanna", Elrohir began.
"No, no he should have gone. His heart ached too much. In Aman he can heal", she continued. Honestly, it felt like her heart was being mercilessly ripped out.
"Eruanna", Elrohir tried again. Eruanna looked at him, tearfully. "He's not gone. Well, he isn't here now but when you sail? You'll see him! You'll see him, your grandmothers, great-grandmother Galadriel! All of them!", Eruanna felt another pang of pain when Galadriel's name was mentioned because she too had sailed.
"It hurts", Eruanna murmured. "It hurts more than anything."
"We know. And it hurts us as well. It hurts many of the elves in Imladris", Elladan added. "Eruanna, my sweet niece, you are not alone in your pain. Your whole family is there and you have Grandfather Thranduil and Great-grandfather Celeborn who remain behind. They stay for you, Eruanna", he said.
Eruanna didn't know whether to feel better or worse. Here she was, grieving one grandfather when she had the other one left.
Elrohir and Elladan seemed to have read her thoughts because Elrohir put both his hands on her shoulders. "It's alright to mourn, even if the one you cherished has not died. You were closest with him and he loved you more than anything. Mourning him is not being selfish to any of us, especially not your other grandfather. We mourn him too but we have our siblings, our brother-in-law and you. You have kept the family together and I do not think we tell you this very often."
Elladan chimed in. "You have every right to mourn. We all have every right to mourn. But you will see him one day when you cross the sea as you had promised."
"Will you be with me too?", Eruanna asked them. The twins looked taken aback by this question. "Will you be with me when I sail? Or will you at least sail?"
"Of course we will go, Eruanna. If our dear niece and her mother chose immortality, then I do not see why we should not", Elladan said, his twin nodding in confirmation.
"Good, because knowing what will happen to aunt Arwen", Eruanna swallowed painfully. "I am in no condition to lose anyone else."
"You'll never truly lose any of us", Elrohir stated. "We'll always be with you in your heart." "And we are too stubborn to let go so easily", Elladan said, brightening the mood. Eruanna grinned for the first time that night. "Good. Stay that way for me, please."
A distant song made its way into her heart and Eruanna shakily sighed. The Valar were already calling to her to leave for a far away land. "No", Eruanna said. "I will not go to Valinor. Not yet."
