Hey friends!
Welcome to Day 3 of Sicktember! This fic is also an alternative prompt, just like yesterday's was, as I was not sure how to do the actual prompt for today.
This fic will likely have more than just this singular chapter; however, I will be posting those chapters as I finish them, unlike with the rest of my stories.
Hope you enjoy today's!
Haydn wearily opened his eyes, looking around. Where am I?
He blinked a few times. This certainly wasn't his bedroom; it was way too clean for that. He looked around, the blank white walls staring back at him. There was a couch against the wall to his left under a window.
It must be the middle of the night, he thought, as he looked out the window at the dark sky and stars. His eyes traveled to across the room where there was a whiteboard hanging on the wall, though he couldn't read it due to the darkness of the room. Next to that, there was a TV hanging on the wall at the foot of his bed, and a dresser underneath it. Continuing around the room he noticed a few chairs against the wall to his right. His eyes eventually landed on a small tower of monitors next to him. I'm in the hospital? That explained why his body ached so much.
He leaned back and sighed; how did he end up here? He hated hospitals, had for years. Ever since his mother died when he was five, he had never had them associated with good things, so he generally tried to avoid anything that might cause him to end up in one.
Haydn searched his mind, what was the last thing he remembered doing?
Three Months Ago
"I guess I'll see you all tomorrow," Haydn called to his classmates as they walked to Scott's car. Scott, TJ, Rachel, Phineas, and Astrid were all heading to Scott's house to work on a group project after school, something he should have been doing as well as a part of the group.
Unfortunately, his godfather, and boss, had texted him while at school that day asking if he could come help out at his shop. Haydn had told him he'd do it, so he'd had to say he couldn't meet tonight when they had gotten the group project later that day.
As he walked towards the crosswalk in front of the school, he heard the school buses start back up and start moving behind him, as they'd been at the school long enough. Knowing they were moving, he stopped for a little long once he got to the crosswalk, making sure there was enough room to cross the street in front of the bus. The next thing Haydn knew, he was suddenly in an excruciating amount of pain before everything went black.
Haydn was brought out of his thoughts with the realization that he must have gotten hit by some kind of a vehicle after school that day, and that he had been out for who knows how long.
"You're awake." Shaking his thoughts out of his head, he turned to look at the nurse standing next to the monitors to his right.
All he could do was nod.
"We'll have to give your father a call. I'm sure he'll be quite happy to hear that you've finally woken up," she commented while checking his vitals.
"…finally?" he questioned; his voice hoarse due to unuse.
"You've been in a coma for the last three and half months," the nurse explained. "From what I've heard, your father has sat here with for the entirety of visiting hours almost every day."
"Oh." His father sitting by his bedside almost every day for the last three and a half months? Now he knows he has to be dreaming. His father hardly spoke to him on a personal level, not to mention actually wanting to spend time with him. It had to have been for the looks of it. Mr. Haddock was the city's mayor, and CEO of the family's company that was based out of the city. He usually was more concerned with the company and the city than he was with his son, especially after his wife died.
The nurse finished checking his vitals and left the room silently, assuming he was done talking. He was left alone in the dark room with no idea what time it even was, until of course he noticed his phone sitting on the table next to him.
If he'd gotten run over by a car, how in the world did his phone survive? Though as soon as he had turned it on, he realized it wasn't his phone, it was a replacement. His contacts and photos were all there, but none of the customizations he had to done to the appearance were.
His phone told him it was two in the morning, so he decided it was probably best to try to sleep some, as he was feeling a little drowsy (though that may have been due to him just having woken up). Although shortly after he placed his phone back on the table, it dinged and lit up. And it did it again. And again. And again.
Haydn sighed, there went his hope of just ignoring whatever text or email had just come in. He reached over to pick up his phone again, seeing multiple unsaved numbers had sent him texts and had called him. Everything showing up as though it had just come in, but he knew better.
As he read through the messages and listened to the few voicemails he had, he smiled. Most of these messages were from people he'd thought didn't want anything to do with him.
He absolutely had to be dreaming.
But the steady beeping of his heart monitor and the nurse coming back to check on him a couple hours later told him he wasn't.
So that was the end of a potential first chapter. I'm really thinking about adding at least two more chapters, but let me know if you think I should keep going past that.
Thanks for the views on the last couple fics! Seeing those do so well is definitely encouraging and made my day every time I checked it today,
Daystrid out!
