The Broken Boosted Gear
By Try Another Time
The streets of Lilith were packed with denizens and visitors of the faction. Although not comparable in density to cities in the human world, one would get easily lost if one lacked knowledge about the streets, but in the case of a dragon and his siblings, getting lost wasn't possible.
"Nii-san, can we get some of those?" Valerie asked as she approached a stand selling hot meat buns. Her mother's ghost remained hidden inside her shadow, not to cause distress amongst the masses.
Ddraig, carrying many bags, looks at his wristwatch and thinks for a few seconds. "Sure, but only meat buns. We have dinner waiting for us at home once we go back."
"Alright!" Valerie cheerfully said as she turned to the buns.
"She won't eat dinner if she eats too much," Gasper said as he walked alongside Ddraig.
"I know. That's why neither of you gets more snacks while we're shopping." Ddraig said as he played with the hair of the young dhampir.
"Nii-san, you're messing my hair up. Mom will get mad about this." Gasper said as he tried to save his hair.
"Alright, I'll stop for now." The Welsh Dragon couldn't help but smile as he enjoyed an afternoon with his adoptive siblings.
Neither of them held any resemblance, but they were his family. The young dhampirs had to endure the harshest of conditions from birth. He remembered the state they were in that night they rescued the pair, the poor status of their bodies, their lack of muscle, and the hunger that each had. They were kids, and yet they barely survived in that dungeon.
He was a dragon; he had seen many things, but that night was one he wouldn't forget.
"I'll make sure neither has to suffer like that ever again."
"Nii-san, come on. I'm hungry!" Valerie said as she saw how slow they walked.
"I hear you. Talk about being a demanding child." Ddraig says.
"I'm sorry, Nii-san. She can be this childish sometimes." Gasper said.
Ddraig waved his hand. "You two can be as childish as you want to be. You're young; I'm an adult, so I should be able to handle your childish antics. Cry, laugh, play, eat, enjoy, read, learn, and experience everything your heart seeks, Gasper. I'll always be here to support you two in any way you need. I'm your older brother, after all."
"..." Gasper could only smile as he walked alongside his brother. He couldn't thank the Welsh Dragon and the alliance enough for the life he was able to have alongside Valerie. No longer chained to a wall in a dungeon, no longer enduring insane hunger, no longer being tortured, finally able to have a life. His current life is something he loves and cherishes deep within his soul, as each day as he woke up in that comfy bed with Valerie in front of him, he couldn't help but smile, knowing that they were free.
He was free but also knew he needed to protect it. Although he appeared to enjoy his time like all the other kids, Gasper always paid attention to his surroundings and what the adults said; knowledge was crucial to protecting his peaceful life alongside Valerie.
"We must master the eyes. We need to protect her and the rest. Brother won't always be there." Deep in his consciousness, the cold voice that kept him alive for years reminded him not to fall back in his training.
The same voice that had always been there. An assuring tone that pushed Gasper to survive, to strive, to eat, to devour, to do whatever was necessary for his survival and that of Valerie.
"I know," Gasper told himself as he continued forward. His eyes lost their pupils momentarily as if he was in some trance.
Ddraig felt a mysterious aura around Gasper at that exact moment, but the aura quickly disappeared as Gasper returned to normal, thus leaving him with a few questions.
Some hours later, Grigory.
"Oh my, you finally brought them. I have been waiting to meet them." Elmenhilde said as she came closer.
Both dhampirs froze in place as Elmenhilde checked every inch of their bodies.
"Nii-san?" Their eyes turned to him with questioning looks.
"Is alright. Elmenhilde is just curious." Ddraig says as he approaches a chair and sits down. "Elmenhilde, try not to scare them. I told you about their past."
Elmenhilde stops and takes a step back. "Sorry, dhampirs are boxes full of surprises, and whenever I get to meet a new one, I get a bit excited. My name is Elmenhilde Karnstein; I'm a researcher involved in the restoration of the old realm of the vampires. Please take a seat."
Both dhampirs looked at each other before they walked and pushed the free chairs closer to Ddraig. Both kept their defenses up as they knew barely anything about this pure vampire.
Elmenhilde drops her head in defeat as she sees this but smiles as she witnesses the closeness between the dragon and the dhampirs. "There's no need to be afraid; I won't bite either of you. I only bite him." Elmenhilde jokes as she points her finger at Ddraig.
"You're a weird one. You claim that, but Nii-sama has never returned with your bite marks on his neck. Is it not normal for all vampires to go for the neck?" Valerie asks.
"Depends on a vampire-to-vampire basis. Almost all vampires I know don't feed on living prey and only drink from blood bags. I would never dare to bite Ddraig's neck, I was advised not to by the fallen angels, and Ddraig explained why I shouldn't." Elmenhilde says.
"So, the Carmilla Faction doesn't hunt?" Gasper asks.
"No, dhampirs act as our intermediaries within the human world; through them, we get a healthy supply of blood bags. The only vampires back home that gained the chance to feed from someone are either in a relationship with humans or have a close connection with them. Each time they feed on a human, they need to be careful about how much blood they drain and how many times they feed. The goal is feeding, not killing, the humans involved." Elmenhilde continues.
Both dhampirs looked interested in knowing more about the faction that opposed their former birthplace, and Elmenhilde seemed more than willing to answer any questions they might have.
"So, no hunting humans?" Gasper continued.
Elmenhilde shakes her hand. "We vampires are practically invaders on this planet. We broke up into two factions when our people left our dead realm. The leaders of the Carmilla faction worked hard to find ways to supply our people with a new food source. Although human blood became the apparent winner, our faction has never seen humans as cattle to be sacrificed for our needs. They created a relationship in which humans were not affected or hunted by our people. Hunting humans is the Tepes faction's path, not us."
"Then how did the dhampir come to be?" Valerie follows.
Elmenhilde crosses her fingers. "Dhampirs started to be a concept with the first round of vampires that abandoned our homeland long ago, including Victoria of the Blazing Meteor. We could say that she's the first mother of dhampirs, although her children are more like "blood dragons" than actual dhampirs due to their genetics. Dhampirs, like you two, are what we could consider the base and general of the species- A child that has half of the genes of a human and half of the vampire genes. Our ancestors never expected our genes to be compatible with other species outside of our own, but life gave us many surprises. Since the first ones, each dhampir within the Carmilla faction has been a bag full of surprises as each one was far different from the next, even if the parents were the same. An individual dhampir will likely possess unique powers and abilities, which might not be shared with their siblings."
"Like the sacred gears?" Gasper asks.
"Sort of but not the same. One of the first dhampirs was known to be the fastest of all the factions, as his natural speed and reflexes were completely abnormal. Another one is known for her unusual regenerative abilities, which have allowed her to survive practically anything; she's still alive to this day, even after so many conflicts. Each one was a unique case, and my family has done their best to keep a record of each. What is remarkable is that you two are the first dhampirs with sacred gears. There are no records of other dhampirs like you two, at least within the Carmilla faction." Elmenhilde admits.
"Not a single one?" Ddraig asks.
"Not once. Sacred gears are already given randomly, and for one dhampir to be given one amongst billions of human descendants is the biggest miracle ever. You two were blessed by getting one each. If there were other dhampirs like you out there, I doubt they ever discovered that they possess such gifts." Elmehilde infers as she looks at the trio.
Gasper bites his lips for a moment before he speaks. "Can you say how many of us have died at the hands of the Tepes faction? Why do they hate us so much?"
Valerie sees the pain on his face. She reaches out and holds his hand.
Elmenhilde takes a deep breath before she speaks. "I might not have an exact number, but I can infer that at least 100 dhampirs, including you two, have been born within that nest of savages. None ever survive past their birth or early life as an adult dhampir is likely to be capable enough to fight back. You two lack many of the weaknesses pure vampires possess, and they fear that. Adeline Vonderburg, the Endless, is feared by them as she has survived each fight against their forces. Other factors influencing their views include their blood superiority complex, past grudges against other races, and many other things. I recommend that you close your hearts to ever reconciling with them. The Tepes Faction won't change; they will continue to prey on others like blood-starved beasts. We tried, we reached out to them, and not once they accepted. They are just-"
"Living failures. I always knew it." Gasper said as he remembered the pain he endured since birth.
Valerie held the tears back as she held his hand. Neither could forget those years.
Elmenhilde could see the pain in their faces. "... It must have been a horrible experience, but you must keep looking forward to the future. One day, you'll meet the real vampires in my faction and even see the homeland of our ancestors. Never let the Tepes faction cloud your views of what a vampire is. A real vampire is not a bloodthirsty monster that bathes in the blood of its victims; a real vampire is another living being with a heart that beats like any other being."
The smile on her face melts their barriers.
"Now, are you two ready for some blood extraction?" Elmenhilde pulls a pair of syringes.
Gasper and Valerie tense up before they turn to Ddraig. Their eyes plead to their brother to take them away.
"You two. Come on, just a little needle." Ddraig argues with the pair.
The two dhampirs shake their heads.
"Elmenhilde, I'll help you get those samples," Ddraig says as he stands up and tries to grab the pair.
The kids back away from Ddraig. Seeing that Ddraig wouldn't help them, Gasper and Valerie began to develop an escape plan.
"I promise it won't hurt," Elmenhilde says as she approaches the kids.
"Mom!" Gasper and Valerie scream as they try to summon the ghosts, yet neither shows up as they see no danger to their kids.
What came after was several hours of two wild dhampirs trying to escape the grasp of their older brother and the smiling researcher who held the object of their fear, syringes.
Many hours after.
Both dhampirs were now peacefully resting in the arms of their brother. The lab was a mess as the kids tried to escape. Thankfully nothing important was damaged or lost as Ddraig and Elmenhilde acted as a team to stop the kids.
"They have a lot of stamina for a young pair of dhampirs. Just what are you feeding them?" Elmenhilde asks Ddraig as she places the blood samples inside a mysterious machine.
"A balance and a nutritious meal like everyone else. Raynare is the main chef in our home, and she tries to keep things fresh. We also gave them supplements to help with their lack of muscle and weight. They have recovered, but we do keep track of their health." Ddraig says as he settles down in his chair with his sleeping siblings.
"What about blood? How much are they ingesting?" Elmenhilde asks as she begins to analyze their blood composition.
"One or two full blood bags each month. They have no problems drinking it but seem to prefer normal food. Besides that, Gasper tends to ingest at least one vial of my blood for his training. Valerie has only done it once." The dragon says.
Elmenhilde turns to him. "You do know that it can lead to dragon blood poisoning. Your blood is like a drug to vampires, and overdoses can lead to drastic effects."
"We know, so we limit the usage. Right now, Gasper only requires it for activating the true power of his sacred gear, but our goal is that he achieves this without the need for it. Valerie hasn't activated the balance breaker of her sacred gear, even with my blood, but we're not worried about it. We know she'll achieve it after some years." Ddraig calmly says.
"The Sephiroth Graal and the Forbidden Balor View, quite the sacred gears they have. I understand why the alliance sought to secure them. In the wrong hands, they could have been used to cause chaos. I find it curious that you ended up as their tutor. How did you end up as the one in charge?"
Ddraig smiles. "I ask the rest of the heads to allow me to keep them under my supervision. I had a soft spot for the pair; I see them as children that deserve a place to belong. The cruelty they experience since birth won't disappear, but I hope they can continue to smile and seek a happier future with our help. They have the potential to grow into adults that can bring hope to others."
Elmenhilde saw how Ddraig carefully held both of them. The warm expression on his face was one that she didn't expect to see. "That's too cute. The warm embrace, the peaceful expressions on their faces as they rest within his grasp. This is too perfect." She wanted to take a photo of that moment and keep it with her for years, but a beeping sound alerted her to her task.
As she turned around to check the results, her eyes widened with shock. "Ddraig, how much of your blood has Gasper ingested?"
"One or two monthly vials for the past 8 or 9 months. What happened?" Ddraig asks.
"You know how a dhampir is supposed to be half and half when it comes to their DNA."
"Yes."
"He has 20% of your own genetic material."
"What?" Ddraig asks as he turns to her.
"Yes. Based on the results, Gasper's genetic material has elements of your own genetic material."
"But that's impossible. How do you know this?"
"Ddraig, I drink your blood. I have your whole genetic material saved on my database and can easily see the similarities. I don't know how or why, but his genetic material is changing to match yours."
"This is not normal."
"It shouldn't be, but I learned to expect surprising things regarding dhampirs in my years. Maybe this is his unique ability. He might be able to improve his own genetic material through the ingestion of blood. This might also lead to changes in his body in the future."
"You think this can continue?"
"If he keeps ingesting your blood is a possibility. He might even copy some of your body's natural abilities and adapt them as his own. As he grows, he might resemble your own appearance in some ways. How long has it been since he got some blood analysis done?"
"So it hasn't been that long. I like to keep an eye on this. I'll send a report to the alliance health department. Regarding Valerie, her genetic material doesn't match yours, but there are several mysterious sequences with unknown nucleic pairs that aren't related to the vampire genetic code. The alliance likely didn't detect them due to their lack of an expert like me. Her genetic material has been altered, but I can't place how this happened. What do you know about their past? Their parents?"
"Mothers were both humans, and both are dead. Gasper's father was a pure-blooded vampire who was executed based on what he told me. His "siblings" seemed to hate him because he was the reason behind the execution. Valerie's father is likely King Tepes, but that's all we know. Gasper doesn't like to speak about that period, nor does Valerie."
"..." Elmenhilde fell silent as she reflected based on this knowledge. The mysteries behind this pair of dhampirs had just increased with these discoveries. Her instincts were telling her that something else was a play in here. As she turned to the kids, her mind came up with an idea. "They lacked nutrients and a food supply, yet they survived for several years. Any other dhampir would have died during the first months under such conditions unless something else was at play. Ddraig, please trust me with this."
Ddraig looks confused for a moment before he watches as Elmenhilde grabs a small surgical knife and throws it toward Valerie. The dragon watches in surprise as black tendrils stretch out from within Gasper's chest and block the blade before her ghost even appears. The boy's eyes opened up, but they were different; both resembled the eyes of a beast that was ready to attack.
Valerie's ghost stands beside her child and points her finger at Elmenhilde.
"I was right. Ddraig, don't make a move. This is likely the thing that has kept them alive for so long. Gasper's survival instincts." Elmenhilde theorized.
"Gasper's survival instincts?" Ddraig asks.
"I wouldn't place this in the realm of your or my survival instincts. The survival instincts of this boy are likely much more complex in nature. Sort of like a second personality that activated at first to make sure he survived, but as it seems, it has also changed to protect Valerie. Look at the tendrils." Elmenhilde said.
Ddraig turned and saw how each tendril carefully checked every corner of Valerie's body. They made their way around the outside of her body, making sure she had no injuries until they found the small mark left behind by the syringe. The tendrils removed the band-aid and fixed the damage before retreating. "This is not what I was expecting."
Gasper's eyes remain focused on Elmenhilde alongside the ghost; Elmenhilde remains calm and motionless to show she isn't an enemy.
"This might have been the reason they survived for so long. Think about it: each time the Tepes faction likely tried to kill him, this second personality activated and protected Gasper while devouring any unlucky vampire that fell victim to it. I don't have all the pieces, but it likely developed some familiarity with Valerie shortly after they came into contact and saw her as a similar existence that required aid. If Valerie was dropped into that area after birth and left to die, "Gasper" likely aided her survival by providing her with the nutrients needed for survival, even at the cost of his own body. His tendrils likely invaded her body and worked to support her. There's no other explanation as to why two dhampirs survived for so long under such conditions." Elmenhilde continued.
Ddraig turned to the boy. He felt the same aura as before. "Gasper?"
His brother turns to him. His eyes are like two rubies filled with the raw instincts of a beast.
"Please, listen to me. Elmenhilde is not an enemy. Please calm down."
"Gasper" looks at the girl momentarily before his tendrils return to his body. The boy closes his eyes and goes back to rest.
Ddraig turns to the ghost that remains next to Valerie. "You knew about this?"
The ghost slowly nods. Her ghostly hands caress Valerie's hair before she tries to speak.
"... Young…. Beast…. Deep…. inside… cage… Help…. Valerie… after… my…. death."
"He was the one that kept them both alive? Did he kill you?" Elmenhilde asks.
The ghost shakes its head. "... He…. cried …. Hungry… he…. was…. but… never… attacked… us…. Guards….. fell… to… his… hunger."
"The guards. They likely try to control him by putting that iron mask on his face." Ddraig said as he remembered the mask.
"Likely a magical item, but I doubt it was effective as these tendrils come from within his body. Maybe his entire body is composed of them. Gasper might be the most dangerous of all dhampirs. With time and your support, he might become an agent capable of defeating whole armies." Elmenhilde said.
Ddraig shakes his head. "There's no need for such a future. I'm already that kind of monster. I'll be happy if Gasper remains beside Valerie and they continue to support each other. I want them to be happy."
Elmenhilde wanted to assure him that his dream might become a reality, but she knew the boy wouldn't do that. The fact that he was slowly changing his genetic material to match Ddraig's was a sign that he was preparing for the future. "One day, he will join the battlefield just like you have."
Several years later. Location: Restored Realm of the Vampires.
An army of savages entered the realm their ancestors had abandoned. What had once been a desolate landscape was now welcoming, with flora and fauna resembling its past glory.
The air was welcoming and no longer affected vampires, and the dark sun was now visible.
A tall crimson tree stood in the distance as the most crucial symbol of this age. Its branches were packed with the fruit every vampire sought to consume once more.
This was the fruit of years of research and efforts between the alliance and a certain researcher—a home for the vampires and a food source that no longer requires them to hunt others.
Yet an army of accursed bloodsuckers who had no business in such a peaceful land stood here. A group who had abandoned this land and slowly degraded themselves into monsters who sought to drain others from their blood; a group known by many terms, including the Tepes Faction.
The leader of such a group stood proud at the center of the army with a grin on his face. His crimson crown was stained with the blood of many victims, and his clothes, although "fancy" and well-kept, were nothing more than a way to keep appearances as he was no king but the leader of a group of savages.
"Can you smell that, my brethren? The fresh air, the welcoming embrace of our ancestors? This is the land that we will make into our home." King Tepes said as he stretched his arms.
His people screamed in joy as they took in all that stood before them.
"I don't think that is the case, King Tepes." A voice said.
King Tepes looked around but initially found nothing until small sets of crimson eyes appeared from within the area's flora. Small black creatures with shapes that resembled hounds, bats, snakes, and other species appeared as they surrounded the army. Each one seemed as bloodthirsty as the next.
Their numbers grew as more continued to appear without an end in sight.
"I was static after learning from our spy network about a force making its way into the territory of the Carmilla Faction, a member of the Yggdrasil Alliance. This is a place that doesn't welcome your kind." The voice said.
King Tepes continued to look around until he saw a young male making his way outside the density of the flora. He was at least 17 years old based on his appearance and stood around 5 feet. His platinum hair was arranged into a small braid, and his face was as charming as it came. One would initially believe he was a female due to his beauty. He was wearing a dark red uniform which held the symbol of the alliance, and a spear enclosed within the body of a dragon.
"You, those eyes. You have to be him. After so long, we met again, monster. Accursed creature." King Tepes said. His eyes were filled with anger. "The spam of Vladi."
"Oh, you seem to remember me. I'm happy; I have dreamed of this day for a long time. I'll gladly present myself to those that might not know me." The young boy stretched his left arm to the side as he bowed to the army. "My name is Gasper Welsh, special agent number 07 under the order of the dragon spear of the Alliance. It is a pleasure to meet you after so long, father-in-law." Gasper says with a calm expression.
King Tepes shakes as he meets Gasper's eyes. The aura that surrounded the boy was far from normal. "So she's still alive; you married that aberration? Talk about a match made in hell."
"I'll appreciate it if you don't refer to her with such terms. We are engaged and planned to have the ceremony in a year, although I doubt you care about such things. Nii-san keeps telling me to slow down with the preparations, but I can hardly contain myself from wanting to see my beautiful Valerie in her bride's dress." Gasper said as he kept a calm expression. "Now, I ask that you surrender. Although you illegally invaded our territory, the alliance requires that I offer the option for a peaceful resolution."
"This is our land, the land of our ancestors. It belongs to the Tepes faction. Nobody was blocking our path." King Tepes said.
"Are you sure? I can clearly see several flag posts around the entrance, and although there are no agents in place right now, this is an official entry point where one needs to go through the official entry process." Gasper said.
The army members looked and saw the gate had an immigration office nearby.
It looked empty, as if someone had asked them to abandon their post.
King Tepes connected the dots. "You were waiting for us. You knew we were coming."
Gasper smiles. "I did. This meeting, after all, is something personal. We have a story between us. One shouldn't miss personal life with their job, but this is far too personal for me to let someone else take over. I asked the heads of the alliance for this chance, and luckily they allowed me to do this under certain conditions."
Gasper removes his gloves and puts them away before he bites his wrist. Blood drips into the floor. He removes his mouth, and the dark hand of his mother's ghost appears to close the injury. What once was a ghost appeared more like a fleshy apparition composed of black tendrils which arose from within Gasper's shadow.
Her face resembled a calm, smiley face with deep red eyes.
"One: I should follow procedure. Offer the peaceful way out as per the protocols."
The blood falling to the floor spreads throughout the area as if it was alive, creating a magic circle that expands beneath the army.
"Two: I should offer mercy to those that surrender. Those that had no will to fight can be captured."
The circle activates, and walls of solid "blood" arise before they capture the army inside a gigantic dome that blocks the sun. Darkness takes over as the vampire army can only see the red eyes of the creatures coming alongside Gasper.
"Three: Make sure to capture their leader alive." Gasper smiles as his deep crimson eyes shine within the darkness.
Vampires were known to be creatures of the dark, but right now, the army of King Tepes was regretting finding themselves in such a place. Their eyes were used to the lack of light, yet right now, they were incapable of seeing anything besides the eyes of their enemies.
"So tell me, what will it be? The easy way or the hard way? The choice is yours." Gasper said.
King Tepes grinds his teeth in anger as he feels threatened by the boy. "Attack him and leave nothing behind."
*Bloodborne OST- Cleric Beast Theme*
"You made me do this," Gasper said as his body dissolved into darkness. The vampires heard the sound of flesh twisting itself in unnatural ways. Their bodies froze in fear as a malicious aura engulfed the area.
The "ghost" also disappeared, although everyone could feel her presence.
The beasts that accompanied Gasper growled and bore their fangs at the vampires. Any vampire that tried to attack them was dragged away from their allies and ripped into pieces within the darkness. Their screams advised them against stepping away from the main group.
"You kept us in that dungeon for years where no light could reach us. We endure hunger and thirst for years. I devoured the corpses of our mothers to keep us alive. I did it all to survive and to keep Valerie alive. I even ate your guards' limbs to survive. You feared me as a monster, and now I will show you what the monster can do after years of training. I will engrave these moments into your soul so that you never forget my name."
Seven large eyes appeared from within the darkness, followed by a continuous flow of purple flames that spread throughout the dome, allowing them to see what stood before them.
King Tepes' knees began to tremble as he witnessed the creature before them. "I always knew you were a monster!"
A large humanoid creature pointed its claws at him. Its dark scales covered each inch of his body, and its four wings were as sharp as blades. It had two sharp-bladed tails. "Time to die." His claws began to vibrate deep red as he prepared to attack.
The flames died, and darkness took over again as Gasper went on the offensive.
The screams of the vampires were heard as the monster they feared returned to finish the job. This would end the faction and its crimes against the realms.
Outside the dome, at a safe distance.
A well-dressed lady observed the dome with anxiousness alongside a large force of the alliance. The lady was tall for her age, and her attributes were likely to cause jealousy in other girls of her age. Her long blonde hair was resting on her left shoulder in a ponytail. She was dressed in a uniform that resembled Gaspers, although hers was white with a visible winged red cross. A golden ring with a black jewel continues to shine brightly on her finger as a sign of her future marriage.
"Gasper, you fool. Why did you have to go on your own? You know that worries me." The lady says as she tries to look inside the dome.
"Relax, Valerie. He knows what he's doing. We approved this mission because he was capable of doing it." A certain female seraph said. A golden eyepatch rested on her left eye for some unknown reason.
"Lady Gabriel, I know, but I can't help but worry about him. This is the first mission he's doing on his own." Valerie said.
"If things take a turn for the worst, we'll aid him, and aren't you one of our greatest healers? If he gets hurt, you can cure him, no matter what." Gabriel assured the girl as she stood as the leader of the group. "Everyone get ready, I doubt this will take too long, but we must remain alert for other invaders. Move out and secure the gate."
The forces of the alliance moved under the orders of Gabriel, with Valerie praying for the safety of her soon-to-be husband.
