Chapter 2
Emma finished her picture, but everyone else was still working on theirs. She glanced over at her sister. She was just about done coloring the castle. Emma grinned and picked up a yellow crayon. She slowly moved her hand towards Hanna's picture and quickly drew a yellow line before moving her hand back again.
Hanna's eye went wide. "Emma!"
"What?" Emma shrugged.
"Emma…that wasn't very nice," David said.
Hanna furrowed her eyebrows at her sister, then she picked up a black crayon and scribbled all over Emma's zoo animals.
"Hey!" Emma shouted.
"Okay, okay that's enough," David stood and picked Hanna up from her seat.
"You did it to mine first!" Hanna threw the crayon back down onto the table.
Emma stood on her chair.
"Emma, careful." Snow quickly stood and put her hands towards her daughter.
"I just drew a line. You ruined mine!" Emma shouted.
"You ruined mine too!"
"Shh…girls you're going to wake your brother," Snow said.
"But Mom my picture…"
Snow could see the tears welling up in Emma's eyes. She looked up at her husband.
David nodded and looked down at Hanna. "How about you come help me make some lunch?"
"Fine," Hanna said.
Once they were gone, Snow turned her attention back to Emma. "I'm sorry about your picture."
Emma shrugged. "It's just a stupid picture."
Snow reached out and wiped the tear that fell down Emma's cheek. "It not stupid. You did a great job. I love the purple spots."
"Thanks." Emma gave her mom a small smile. "But you can't even see them now because of her!" Emma turned towards the kitchen and glared at her sister.
"Hey, look here," Snow gently turned Emma back towards her. "You can color another one."
"I don't want to."
Snow sighed. "How about we go watch some TV. It's your turn to pick, right?"
Emma nodded and reached her arms up to her mom.
Snow couldn't help the smile that spread across her face. She picked Emma up and carried her over to the couch.
Meanwhile in the kitchen, Hanna and David went to work on lunch.
David set Hanna on the counter. He got some cheese slices and butter out of the fridge and grabbed the bread from the counter. "Can you open these for me?"
Hanna took the cheese from her dad and started taking off the wrapping.
"You know, that wasn't very nice of you to scribble all over Emma's picture."
"But she did it first."
David raised his eyebrows at her. "Hanna…she drew a tiny line."
"I know," Hanna sighed. "I don't even know why I didn't that. I just got so mad. I couldn't help it."
"I think that potion is effecting more than just your size."
"I think so too," Hanna looked towards the couch. "I mean look at Emma…she's snuggling with mom."
David glanced over and saw that Emma was sitting on Snow's lap. Her head was leaned back, laying on her chest, and Snow had her arms wrapped around her.
"Now that's pretty adorable."
Hanna grinned and nodded her head.
David began buttering the bread while the skillet was heating up on the stovetop. "So when we go in there, what are you going to say to your sister?"
"You're welcome for making lunch?" Hanna said as she struggled with the plastic on the next piece of cheese.
"Hanna…"
Hanna sighed and looked up at him. "I'll say sorry."
"That's my girl." David reached down and kissed the top of her head.
Hanna went bag to work on the cheese. She got the first one out, but she could not get the plastic off of this next one. She pulled and pulled and ended up ripping the cheese. "Ugh. I can't do this." Hanna threw the cheese onto the floor.
"Hey…" David bent down to pick it up. "What did you do that for?"
"It was ruined."
"You know it's just going to melt anyway."
"Oh. Yeah I guess you're right." Hanna could feel her cheeks starting to get warm.
"It's alright. I'll get another one." David threw the ripped cheese into the garbage and went to the fridge for new piece. He held it out to Hanna.
Hanna looked at the cheese and just shook her head. "Can you do it?"
"Yes. I can do it. How about you put some grapes onto our plates?" David set out the plates and the bag of grapes beside Hanna.
"Okay."
Once the food was finished, David helped Hanna down from the counter and gave her two plates, each holding a grilled cheese and some grapes. "Can you handle these?"
Hanna nodded. "I got it." She walked over to the couch and held a plate out to her sister.
Emma sat up, and glared at her.
David came in with a tray holding plates of food for him and Snow and glasses of water for everyone. He set the tray down on the coffee table, then looked to Hanna. "Don't you have something you want to tell your sister?"
Hanna sighed. "I'm sorry I ruined your picture."
Emma's face softened. "It's okay." Emma took the plate and leaned back on her mom. She picked up a piece of the sandwich and was just about to take a bite.
"Emma…" Snow said.
Emma moved the sandwich away from her mouth. "Sorry for the yellow line."
"It's okay." Hanna sat down on the floor, put her plate on the coffee table, and started in on her grilled cheese.
David picked up the plates from the tray, sat down beside Snow, and handed her one. Then he noticed what was on the tv. He leaned closer to his wife. "Law & Order? Are you sure they should be watching this?"
Snow shrugged. "That's what Emma wanted to watch."
"Dad, I'm not actually a little kid, remember?" Emma said.
"Right, sorry…" David made eye contact with Snow. They both could tell their daughters were starting to act more like the age they looked, rather than the ages they actually were. Maybe Law & Order wasn't the best choice.
Once Hanna finished her lunch, she climbed up onto David's lap. "Daddy, I don't like this show."
"We watch it all the time, Han," Emma said.
"But it's scary."
Emma rolled her eyes. "You're not scared."
"Yes I am," Hanna looked up at her dad. "Please, Daddy. I really don't like it."
David looked at Snow.
"Maybe she's right, Em," Snow said.
Emma sat up and turned towards her mom. "No…please. Let's just finish this one."
Snow shook her head and reached for the remote.
"You're such a liar!" Emma shouted at Hanna.
"I am not!" Hanna turned to her mom. "Let's watch the cake show."
"No! Not that again!"
"Yes!"
"But it's still my turn!"
"Girls please be…" Snow started to say just as cries came from the bassinet. "Girls," Snow groaned, "your brother is meant to nap for another hour."
"It's her fault!" Emma shouted.
"No it's not! You picked the scary show!"
"You are not scared!"
"Girls. Please." Snow stood with Emma in her arms.
David stood up with Hanna. "No more yelling."
Emma crossed her arms. "But she ruined my tv time!"
"You're going to give me nightmares!"
Neal's cries started getting louder.
Snow sighed. "Here." She reached Emma out to David. "Take them upstairs while I get him back to sleep."
David reached out his other arm for Emma and walked towards the stairs.
"Where are you taking us?" Hanna asked.
"Upstairs. You two need a nap."
