Chapter 3

David went into Emma's room first, and plopped her down onto her bed.

Emma crossed her arms. "I am not taking a nap."

"I don't care if you sleep, but you are staying in here for awhile," David said.

"I'm not a baby," Emma said.

"I know you're not." David reached down and kissed the top of her head. "Just take a little break, okay?"

"Fine," Emma sighed. She laid down on her pillow and stared at the ceiling.

"Come on, Hanna." David carried across the hall into her room and set her down on her bed.

Hanna threw herself back against her pillow. "Daddy, I am not tired."

"Then just lay here quietly." David covered Hanna up with her blankets.

Hanna kicked the blankets off of her. "I don't want these."

"Okay."

Hanna sat up and furrowed her eyebrows at her dad. "When can we come out?"

"When I say so." David gave Hanna a kiss and left the room.

Hanna groaned and laid back onto her pillow. She reached under it and pulled out her baby blanket, snuggling it close.

After a few minutes, Hanna heard her door open. She sat up, hoping it was her mommy or daddy coming to get her. She saw that it was her sister though. Hanna watch Emma slowly shut the door and walk over to her bed. She held something behind her back.

"What are you doing?" Hanna asked.

"Well, I'm not sleeping."

"Duh…" Hanna said.

Emma held up the bag she was holding behind her back.

Hanna grinned. She knew what was in there. She scrambled down from her bed and sat down on the floor with her sister.

"Do you want pink nails or purple ones?" Emma asked, holding up the bottles of nail polish.

"Umm…both!"

"Shhh…"

"Sorry," Hanna whispered. "Can you do both colors?"

Emma nodded. "Hold out your hand."

Hanna did what her sister said.

"Pink or purple first?"

"Purple."

Emma set down the pink bottle and untwisted the lid from the purple. She pulled the lid out and just as she reached the brush out towards Hanna, a drop of nail polish plopped onto the hardwood floor.

Both of the girls mouths fell open, and they looked up at each other.

Emma looked around the room for something to clean up the mess. Why didn't she think to bring a towel with her?

Hanna scrunched down closer to the drop of nail polish. "This looks kinda cool." She got an idea. She reached over for the pink bottle. She unscrewed the lid, pulled out the brush, and made a pink dot beside the purple one.

Emma's eyes went wide. "Han. What are you doing?"

"Look how pretty it is." Hanna continued to make more pink dots all over the floor.

Emma came closer to her sister and looked at the dots. They did look pretty. Emma grinned and pulled the brush from the purple nail polish again. She made a few more dots beside the ones Hanna made.

Both girls looked at each other and covered their mouths, trying to quiet their giggles. Then they went to work decorating the entire floor of Hanna's bedroom. Emma had a variety of colors and by the time they were done, the room looked as if rainbow colored raindrops had fallen from the ceiling.

The girls stood by the bedroom door and admired their masterpiece. Then they realized they couldn't walk back across the floor to put the nail polish away because the dots were still wet. Hanna couldn't lay back down in bed like she was suppose to. Emma could sneak back into her room, but how was she going to get her bag of nail polish? Then they both slowly started to realize they had no way of cleaning up this mess. And what would happen when their mom and dad saw what they did? They would not be happy that they just painted the floor…they just painted the floor…why did they just paint the floor? The girls looked over at each other.

"Han, why did we do that?"

Hanna shrugged. "Toddler brains?"

"What are we gonna do?"

"I don't know you're a grown up…you fix it."

Emma sighed. "Maybe I can use my magic to clean it up."

"Yeah try that."

Emma closes her eyes, held up her hands, and waved them over the floor. She opened her eyes, and the nail polish was still there.

"Try again," Hanna said.

Emma nodded. She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and waved her hands over the floor. "Did it work?"

"Nope."

Emma opened her eyes. "What are we gonna do?"

Hanna shrugged. "Never let mom and dad come in here again?"

"At least not until we're big again and can clean this."

"How are we going to keep them out of here?"

"Use these cute toddler faces we have and figure it out as we go?"

"Right," Hanna turned towards Emma and gave her a nod. "We can do this."

"Let's go back downstairs. I think we've been up here long enough to count for a nap."

"Okay, let's go."

Emma turned towards the door and slowly opened it. She peeked out towards the stairs. She couldn't see her parents anywhere. The coast was clear. She turned to Hanna and waved her hand, motioning for her to follow.

Hanna went with Emma into the hallway. She turned back around and quietly closed her door. Then she reached out and took ahold of her sister's hand and the twins made their way down the stairs.

Once they made it to the bottom, the girls peered around and saw that their mom and dad were putting laundry away in their didn't seem to have noticed that they were there.

"Remember, turn on that charm," Emma whispered to Hanna.

Hanna nodded. She let go of her sister's hand and ran over to her mom. "Hi Momma!"

"Hey baby." Snow scooped Hanna up into her arms.

"Daddy!" Emma ran right over to him.

David picked Emma up. "Hey princess."

"What are you two doing down here?"

"We missed you." Hanna wrapped her arms around her mommy's neck.

Emma nodded. "We feel a lot better now."

"Did you two sleep at all?" David asked.

Hanna looked over at Emma.

"I think a little," Emma shrugged.

"Yeah I think slept a little too," Hanna said.

Emma looked over and saw that Neal was awake in his swing. "Did Neal get to finish his nap?"

"Yes I got him back to sleep for awhile," Snow told her.

"We're really sorry we woke him," Hanna said.

Emma nodded. "We promise we won't fight anymore."

"Thank you girls." David kissed Emma's forehead.

"We're glad that nap did you some good," Snow said.

"Mommy?"

"Yes, Hanna?"

"Can we please have a snack?"

"My belly is really hungry," Emma added.

"Yeah come on, we'll find you something," Snow said.

Snow and David carried the girls into the other room and sent them each down on one of the stools. Snow gave each of the girls half a banana and some crackers.

Hanna and Emma glanced over at each other as they enjoyed their snack. Their plan was working so far…now they just had to be sure they kept their parents out of that bedroom.
