Chapter 3 - Café meetings

Some time passed but Evelyn still couldn't get passed what she smelled in the woods. Something was wrong, yet everything seemed the same. Where was this anxiousness coming from? It wasn't as if they were the only vampires in the world, but the chances of encountering another here, this far away. Hadn't Jasper told her this area was theirs? No trespassers allowed, though they could still pass through, what harms was there in that?

Rosalie had told her she was imagining things and even if she wasn't, whoever it had been, they were probably gone by now. Evelyn had only nodded at the other woman, whose face was covered in blood from the bear she'd just devoured, but she still wanted to scan the area. Better safe than sorry. Rosalie had sighed, but agreed and together they tried to follow the scent but it was a dead end ultimately.

Evelyn tapped her fingers on the windowsill, her mind wandering back to that scent. Unfamiliar.

"Darlin'…" Jasper's warm voice rang in her ear as strong arms wrapped themselves around her waist, "Is that a look of worry I see on your face and tension I feel from your body?" His whispers against her hair sent a warm shiver through her. Warm lips pressed gently against the back of her neck. Within a second those unsettling concerns disappeared like snow in the sun.

"Mm…" Evelyn moaned in return, causing Jasper to nibble her earlobe playfully.

"Emmett and I scanned the neighbourhood just to be safe, but I'm afraid we hit the same dead end as you and Rosalie did. However, if this person shows up again at least we'll all recognize the scent." Jasper said to her, "They think it's probably someone passing by."

Yes, that's exactly what Rosalie had said to Evelyn earlier. Just someone passing by. Evelyn turned around in Jasper's arms and hooked hers behind his neck. "And what are you thinking, my love?" It was quite useless to ask him that for she already knew what his answer would be.

"Best to be careful even if this person is just passing by, I don't want anybody else around us." He answered, which was exactly what Evelyn hoped he would say.

Jasper grinned and lifted her up. With no effort, Evelyn wrapped her legs around his waist. It all felt so new, even with a few months having passed. Time did go by differently when it was something you no longer had to worry about. There were other worries still and Evelyn wondered when the day would come when does disappeared as well. Absentmindedly, she lowered her gaze to glance at the scars on Jasper's beautiful face and neck. Crescent shaped marks. Not only there but on his arms, wrists...

"Do my scars frighten you, Darlin'?"

Evelyn gave him a smile," No." They didn't, but there were so many of her. She only had two of her own. On her neck and on that soft tissue right between her collarbones. Given to her by Carlisle Cullen. Moving her hand, she touched the latter spot in her body. Jasper seemed to understand what she was thinking.

"I'm glad you only have two scars, instead of the uncountable ones on my body." He said.

"I wish it had been the same for you." She replied.

"Now stop your worrying, Miss Swan. It's my duty to keep you from harm." He winked placing a kiss upon the tip of her nose.

Evelyn chuckled. "I'm not so fragile anymore, Mister Whitlock. If you wish, you can be a little rough with me."

He didn't need to hear that twice. Jasper walked over to the bed and gently laid his mate on her back. "You want it rough, ma'am?" He said softly," I'll rock you're world."

Laughter filled their bedroom but soon those noises got replaced by other more intimate sounds.

A couple of miles away

"Nobody important, huh…?" He muttered softly and shook his head. What a lie. Then again, Volturi tended to lie even if that's not what they called it.

"He's nobody important."

The guy had said to him when he'd pointed to the honey haired man in the picture. Oh, he had lied to him about that one for sure. But he'd seen it with his own two eyes, well, not his own eyes but that of a bird perched on one of the branches near the window. The girl he was suppose to go after and the guy from the picture were a couple, and that did not sit well with the man who'd given him the order to follow her.

He should have seen it, the tracker's reaction had been one of hate and jealousy. At least now it was all becoming a pretty clear. The job wasn't really about gaining her trust in order to get closer to the coven, this was about her and only her. The tracker had missed his target and he couldn't get to her without eliminating the other pieces. Oh, this put him in quite a pickle.

Helping Demetri was his own way out of the Volturi's clutches. That and the handsome sum of money he would receive if he was able to get the girl's trust and bring her to the Volturi. But at what cost? Perhaps that was just what he had to do. Bring her directly to Aro instead of Demetri. Only the problem was that he'd made the deal with Demetri and not Aro. Would the tracker go behind the leader's back to make such an arrangement?

He let out a loud groan of frustration. He needed a different approach. He needed time to think, but from what he gathered the four of them were planning on leaving the area again soon. It was time to act soon. They already had his scent. There was no way he would be able to avoid them if he passed them again. Yes, he had to confront this head on and worry about who he was going to go to in the end once he'd gained the girl's trust.

But how on Earth was he going to do that?

The cabin

It was almost like she was sleeping, even though that wasn't possible. Steady as her chest went up and down, when in fact she needed no air. The way her voice sounded when they were making love, the way she smelled when she was at her highest point in their love dance.

How she moved, how she reacted to his touch, how she knew what drove him crazier than he already was. How was it that he hadn't realized this is what he'd been missing all those years… his whole life?

"If only I had known…"

"Known what, my love?" Evelyn whispered as she turned to look at Jasper.

"Nothing, Darlin'," he smiled," just talking to myself."

Her hand slowly moved across his chest, skimmed his jawline and came at a rest against his left cheek. "I love you." She said.

Jasper couldn't describe what those words did to him. The first time she'd said them had been during the worst moment of his life as she'd said them when she was dying right in front of him. He thought that was the end. A cruel joke by fate. Finding the woman he was meant to be with, ripped away the moment she was willing to commit her love to him. He could still feel it deep within him, utter despair. A feeling he will never be able to forget. Her 'I love you' would always be a reminder that he was immortal yet mortal all at once. And at the same, her words were also a reminder that he'd suffered enough. That he deserved to be with his mate for all eternity.

"Forever, my heart." He kissed her deeply and made sure she could feel the love he felt for her too.

Meanwhile in Forks

"It's been almost three months now!"

"She'll be back in time for the wedding."

"The wedding," He said with a hint of discomfort," don't get me started about the wedding."

"You gave your blessing for it." Bella reminded him.

Charlie waved his hand," I know I did, and I still do but she's been gone for too long. Enough is enough, Bells."

He grabbed the phone and literally forced it into Bella's hands, "Call her and tell her to get home."

Bella arched an eyebrow at her dad, "You have a mouth too, and you know her phone number. Why don't you just call her?"
She pushed the phone back into his hands. There was no way was she going to play this game.

"I don't like the idea of her being alone with that Cullen boy, who she has only known for a while." He admitted.

"Dad…" Bella grabbed his hand and sat down with him on the couch. It wasn't that short, not anymore and it was strange to see Charlie worry about Evelyn. How often had she heard him say, your cousin is so smart, she takes her time with boys. Now that Evelyn was actually gone with a boy, he was beginning to come back on his words of admiration.
"Evelyn is old enough to know what she is doing… haven't you always bragged about how smart and wise she is?"

"I don't recall,-"

"And other than that, you know the Cullens. They're good people!"

"I don't know him as well as the others,-"

"Eve and Jasper aren't even alone. Rosalie and Emmett are with them as well."

Charlie blinked, he obviously had forgotten that little detail. He scratched the back of his neck, something he always did when he was figuring out what to say next. "Even so, it's been long enough. When you talk to her again make sure you tell her it's time to come back home." He then said.

Bella rolled her eyes. "She'll be home soon. I'm pretty sure you can wait until then."

"Fine, fine…" Her dad sighed, throwing his hand up in the air. " Nobody listens to me anymore, why are Swan women so stubborn? Thank goodness we men still have some sense."

Safe for now, Bella puffed her cheeks and ran a hand through her dark hair. But they had to think of something for when it was time for the wedding. Evelyn was technically a new born still, even if she hadn't dined on a human since she was turned. She would be in the same room as Charlie and Renee. Aside from the fact they'd have to hide her eye colour, it was more important to make sure she wouldn't be tempted to sink her fangs into them.

No, no, that was something she was going to let the Cullens think about. It was their area of expertise and Bella knew for a fact that they would make sure the wedding would not become one of death and misery.

Calgary

"Okay, relax you can do this. You handled yourself perfectly with those children a few weeks ago, how difficult can a larger group of people be?" Evelyn muttered under her breath as her eyes scanned all of the people walking down the street as they were driving through downtown Calgary.

Rosalie and Emmett wanted to go to a small bar, where they used to hang out about 30 years ago. A small bar, also filled with people. Humans. Mortals. Blood filled vessel. Tasty morsels...

"Do you guys really think this is a good idea…?" Evelyn again asked the others.

"Don't be nervous, Evy. You'll be fine." Emmett smiled at her in the rear-view mirror.

"Easy for you to say, you've had years and years of being a vegetarian already…" She mumbled in a low voice.

"Cheer up, if you manage this then you're ready for Bella and Edwards wedding." Rosalie added. How unlike Rosalie to say such a thing, but she was right. The best way to persuade Evelyn that she could do this was to throw her cousin's wedding in her face.

But was she really ready? She'd followed most of the steps and done almost all the tests in the journal Carlisle had given her. Except for the 6th one, that one she had skipped because somehow she knew it was pointless. Frustration shot through her, Carlisle and his dumb journal. His book of experiments and she was his labrat. Once she was back in Forks she was going to throw it in his face.

"We'll make sure you'll hurt no one, Darlin'." Jasper assured her, squeezing her leg gently.

"You just make sure you'll be sending me gazillions of calmness waves, Mister Whitlock." She said to him in return, poking his chest with her index finger.

"Okay, we're here!" Emmett exclaimed as he parked the car behind a café. Rosalie smiled as she stepped out of the car and slammed the door shut.

With her fingers intertwined with Jasper's, Evelyn got out behind him. The went into the bar through the backdoor instead of the front. Once they were inside the four of them were immediately greeted by a very tall and handsome looking man. His black hair was slicked back, but his sideburns and his scruffy beard were grey coloured.

"Ol'right, what's the meaning of this sneaking in through the back door?" His voice was a rather pleasant one, deep and foreign.

He squinted his eyes together," Miss Rosalie, is that you I recognize?"

Rosalie had put on her most charming smile, walked over to the man and hugged him deeply, "It's nice to see you again, Arthur."

"Please, no formalities my dear. Emmett, my good friend, you look as strong as ever." Arthur greeted Emmett with a firm handshake.

"I had a rather good workout the last couple of months." Emmett smirked.

He then turned his gaze to Jasper and Evelyn, who smiled cautiously as she took in his red eyes. Vampire. He wasn't that young as they were though, by the way he looked he was probably changed during his early forties.

"Arthur is a friend, Evy. You can trust him even if he isn't on an animal diet." Jasper whispered, sensing her concern.

Arthur started to laugh and shrugged. "I tried, but Elk just isn't my thing. Allow me to introduce myself, young Blossom. My name is Arthur Mc'Galle." He grabbed hold of Evelyn's hand and gave it a light peck.

"Evelyn Swan."

Arthur blinked," Evelyn Swan you say?"

"Is something the matter, Arthur?" Jasper asked the man.

"Oh no, nothing important, I could have sworn I've heard that name before…" He answered as his scratched his jaw, "Where are your siblings and parents?" He then asked Rosalie, changing the subject. "I'd love to see Carlisle and lovely Esme again."

"It is just the four of us. The rest is home in Forks. We decided to leave the family for a few weeks because of certain…circumstances." Rosalie carefully said to him.

Arthur frowned," I have to be honest, I did expect to find Alice with you lot, seeing as you are here." He nodded to Jasper, who pulled Evelyn closer to him, making it quite clear what she was to him.

"It's a long story, but Alice has foreseen this." Jasper said firmly. No need to linger on the subject.

Arthur's eyes went from Jasper's arm around Evelyn's waist to her face, he gave a slight nod, meaning he understood and wouldn't question further.

"Let's get to the bar and chat some more. I can't wait to hear about the fight you people have been in a couple months ago."

Nobody replied, how did he know about the fight with the Newborns? Without asking they followed Arthur into the bar area. Evelyn sighed inwardly with relief, as it wasn't as crowded as she'd initially thought it would be. A few humans but also some immortal scents. What was this place?

Pulling him back, Evelyn squeezed Jasper's arm," Are you kidding me? He's running a bar where vampires and humans sit side by side?" she hissed.

"I know it seems out of place, Darlin', but don't worry. Some of us vampires are smart enough to handle ourselves around humans. Nobody wants to do something which could cause the Volturi to show up. You know how they like order and peace."

Volturi, Volturi. They were everywhere it seemed. A day couldn't go by without them either being mentioned or Evelyn having to think of them. Quietly she let Jasper lead her to a table in one of the corners. Arthur was about to join them when a customer came in and he excused himself for a moment.

"Evy, you're alright?" Rosalie asked. "Let us know if it becomes to much for you to handle. Just trust me when I tell you that drinking human blood with alcohol in their system is one of the most disgusting tastes you'll ever encounter."

"Really?" Emmett frowned at his wife.

"Yes, Emmett!" The woman nudged him with a certain tone of voice.

"I'm fine, Rosalie, thanks. No temptation yet, maybe a little bit nervous but,-" Evelyn looked up at Jasper who smirked almost immediately, followed by a wave of calmness. "I can't help but wonder, why did Arthur started running a bar where every type of persons, and by that I mean human and vampire, can come in and just have a drink?" She whispered.

It was Emmett who answered," Arthur used to run a bar before he became a vampire. At least that's what he told us when we asked him the same question 30 years ago."

"Ah…" Evelyn turned her attention away from the table and looked at Arthur who was talking to the person who'd walked in a few minutes okay. She wasn't sure if she was imagining it but were both of them glancing in the direction of their table every so often? Evelyn narrowed her eyes at the stranger next to Arthur.

Something was off. He looked vaguely familiar. No, not looked. The man had dark blond ruffled hair, a few strands hanging in his ruby red eyes. She would have remembered if she'd met him before. It was something else. Evelyn opened her mouth and licked her lips, tasting the air. Trying to distinguish the scent coming from him. Her eyes widened.

It was his. The scent from the woods!

Whoosh! Next chapter we'll find out who this dude is exactly.

As always, I would love to hear your thoughts!

Until next time.
