Chapter 17: The Second Task

The evening before The Second Task, Peri sat in the library surrounded by stacks of books. She furrowed her brow in concentration, searching for a way to breathe underwater. The soft glow of lamplight illuminated her, casting shadows on the pages of ancient texts that covered every available surface. Suddenly, the silence was interrupted by the arrival of Hallie, Holly, and Ida. They approached Peri with curious expressions and a determination to help. Hallie's nose wrinkled at seeing the chaotic scene around them, but her focus remained on their sister in need.

"I need your help, Holly. I just discovered the clue and its meaning a few days ago. I've been holed up in the library, trying to unravel its secrets."

Holly slapped hard on Peri's arm, causing Madam Pince to scowl at them from behind her desk. "Peri, you were supposed to have solved this weeks ago!" she scolded.

"Shhh," hissed Madam Pince, causing Holly to give an apologetic wave before turning back to her sister. "Sorry," she muttered.

Peri sighed, frustrated, as she flipped through the books sprawled on the table before them. "I've been a little preoccupied lately," she defended herself.

Holly groaned, "I shouldn't even be helping you. I'm still angry at you for stealing Draco away from me."

Peri rolled her eyes. "He was never going to date you, Holly. He may care for you but never goes against his family's values and traditions."

"And yet he can date you," retorted Holly bitterly. "A half-blood like myself."

Peri's eyes remained glued to the pages of her book, scanning over spells and potions in search of a solution. She needed something that would allow her to breathe underwater for an hour, but her mind was preoccupied with thoughts of Draco and George.

"Snape's allegiance to the Malfoy family, intertwined with Richard's aristocratic roots, provides me with the advantages of being close to Draco," Peri reminded Holly. "Despite my repeated clarifications to you about my association with Draco, you just do not seem to believe me. We are doing this for the press, that is all."

Holy picked up a book herself but was still unsatisfied with the answer.

Hallie's quill moved swiftly across the pages of her journal as she spoke up, her voice tinged with frustration. "I wish they would pay attention to me," she sighed. Hallie craved the constant spotlight and adoration from the press. "I had more when we lived in the Upper West End."

Holly furrowed her brow in confusion. "What do you mean? We lived in the Hamptons."

A hint of annoyance flashed in Hallie's eyes toward her twin. "Fine, technically, we had a penthouse in the Upper West End but didn't live there."

"I do not care for the press," Ida spoke up, "All they want to know is about my father. When he was in prison, all they asked was how I felt being the daughter of a murderer. Then he escaped, and they started asking if I knew his location. Which they still ask. That Skeeter woman will not leave me or Remy alone."

The three sisters looked at Ida with understanding and sympathy in their eyes. "I know it must be difficult for you, Ida," Hallie said gently, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "To know that your father is so close, yet you cannot have him."

Ida's expression tightened, but she didn't respond. She knew what her friend was trying to do—offer words of comfort and support—but the pain was still too fresh.

"Yes, well, he chose to find Harry first," she finally said, her voice filled with bitterness. "Not my brother and me. We were never his first choice; he wanted Harry."

Peri shook her head in disbelief. "He wanted Peter Pettigrew," she stated bluntly.

"Uncle Remus mentioned last summer when he returned to France," Ida said, grabbing a book from the nearby shelf: Magical Water Plants of the Highland Lochs.

"I don't believe it," Peri exclaimed, flipping through the book's pages. "Your father loves you and your brother. He wouldn't abandon you like this."

But deep down, Ida couldn't shake off the feeling of hurt and betrayal from her father's actions. She hoped her friends were right, but it was hard to let go of years of longing for a father, and when she could finally have him, he chose someone else.

"So, what is the clue?" Holly asked, her fingers tapping impatiently on the ancient spell book in front of her. She had grown tired of Peri's distractions and was eager to return to their original task.

Peri continued to scan the text in her book, her brow furrowed in concentration as she repeated the clue aloud: "Come seek us where our voices sound; we cannot sing above the ground."

Holly nodded, "Easy, the Black Lake. Merpeople live there. And this time, you don't have to face a dragon, just some underwater creature. What else does the clue say?"

"An hour-long, you'll have to look," replied Peri with a sigh.

"Again, easy. Just give us a specific time frame to find whatever you need from under the lake."

Peri looked at her sister skeptically. "Do you even remember the last time you held your breath for an hour? Or for any lengthy period of time?"

Holly shook her head and continued flipping through her book.

Suddenly, Hallie stood up from her spot at a nearby table, causing Holly and Peri to jump in surprise. "Well, it's not that hard," she said confidently. "I do it all the time with Fred."

"Ew!" Holly and Peri exclaimed in unison, turning to look at Hallie with disgust.

"Ladies," scolded Madam Pince as she glared at them from across the library, "Quiet down or leave. The library is a place of study, not chatter."

"Sorry," they mumbled as she stalked away.

Holly shuddered and shook her head, "I could have gone my entire life without knowing that little tidbit."

Her twin shrugged and gathered her things, "With a resigned sigh, she picked up her bag and rummaged through it. "I have an outfit to design," she said with a hint of annoyance in her voice. With a pointed glance at Peri, she continued, "Someone took forever to find the clue. Now, with only hours left before the event, I needed to create a waterproof outfit that was not only cute and sexy but also school-appropriate because I got in too much trouble with the first task outfit. Who doesn't love a skin-tight outfit? Fred certainly does."

"Again, did not need to know that," Holly said with a disgusted shake.

Hallie went down the row, not caring what others thought of her and Fred.

"Thank you, Hal. I love you for this," Peri told her.

"I know. You would need me to understand fashion. Except for Ida, but she's French."

As Hallie exited the library, Peri and Holly exchanged eye rolls, leaving them to their research. But just as they were about to delve back into their books, Ida gasped, drawing their attention again.

"Gillyweed! Another champion must be planning to use it," Ida exclaimed, finger tracing over a well-worn page in the book she was reading. Peri and Holly quickly made their way over to her, eager to see what she had discovered.

"Yes! How did we not think of this before?" Holly exclaimed with a mix of excitement and frustration. "But where are we going to get gillyweed?"

Peri's eyes scanned the page, her mind racing for a solution. "Snape's potion cupboard," she stated in a low whisper.

"But isn't he mad at you?" Holly asked, confused. "Hallie mentioned earlier that Fred said that George said that Snape is not speaking to you at the moment."

"He's just upset because I used occlumency on him," Peri replied casually.

"Occlumency!" Holly gasped. "That's an incredibly powerful skill. You know how to use it?"

Peri shrugged nonchalantly. "I've tried...but I need to go get some gillyweed right now."

Ida and Holly nodded as they helped return the books to their rightful places. Mad-Eye rounded the corner, his one magical eye fixated on something in the distance. "Ladies," he said gruffly, "may I have a word alone with King?"

"They were just leaving," Peri said, gesturing towards her sister and friend. "Goodnight," she said with a polite smile before they left.

"Goodnight," Mad-Eye called after them, his gravelly voice echoing down the hallway.

Once they were gone, Peri turned her complete focus back to Mad-Eye. "How can I help you, Professor?" she asked respectfully.

He examined her closely, his magical eye scanning every inch of her being. "Are you prepared?" he questioned. "Took you a long time to figure out the egg."

She glanced at the dragon egg beside her, its golden scales shimmering in the dim light. "Just about," she replied confidently. "I have one more thing to do before I'm all set. I need to pay my fa...Professor Snape a visit before I go back to my dorm."

Mad-Eye gave a stiff nod, his magical eye twitching as it continued to scan the shelves of books around them. Suddenly, he barked out a command: "Longbottom!"

Neville quickly scampered over from a few rows down, his footsteps echoing loudly in the emptying library.

"King will escort you," Mad-Eye said, gesturing to Peri. "She knows the way to Professor Snape's potion cupboard." Mad-Eye's magical eye flipped back and forth between Peri and Neville. "I am sure Professor Snape won't have an issue with his child using ingredients from his personal cupboard."

As Neville approached them, "No, sir... I'm sure Professor...Snape won't mind if Peri borrows ingredients," he stammered, trying to keep his voice steady.

Mad-Eye's gruff voice cut through the air, "Then you and Peri can get the ingredients you both need."

Without another word, he turned and left the two alone in the row of books.

Neville released a breath he didn't realize he was holding before turning to Peri. She put up her final book before placing a hand on his back, "Come on, Neville."

They left the library and went to Snape's potion ingredient cupboard.

"What are you needing?" Neville asked, breaking the tense silence between them.

"I need gillyweed to complete the second task," Peri replied.

Neville's eyes widened in excitement, "Really? So does Harry. I'm supposed to get it for him. I was scared to break into the cupboard, but it should be alright since you need it too."

Peri shrugged nonchalantly, "He's not speaking to me right now."

"Oh...um... I'm sorry to hear that," Neville said sympathetically. "I never like it when my Nan and I aren't speaking. It's hard, it must be tough with a parent."

Peri shrugged. "I don't truly know him. He's trying, but not much."

They finally reached the small wooden door of Snape's ingredient cupboard. Neville tried the knob, only to find it locked.

"It's locked," he stated with disappointment.

Peri drew her wand from the hidden pocket inside her robe and pointed it at the knob. "Alohomora," she whispered.

As Neville opened the door to reveal a cramped storage cupboard, Peri stepped inside, taking in the rows upon rows of shelves lined with various ingredients. Her eyes scanned over them until Neville pointed up at a high shelf, where a small glass jar containing greenish plants sat.

Climbing up the rusty ladder, Peri carefully reached for the jar and opened it, immediately recoiling at the pungent smell. "Gillyweed," she muttered to herself as she sniffed the plant. "And this will help?"

Neville nodded eagerly. "Gillyweed allows the consumer to breathe underwater for an hour."

Satisfied with this information, Peri took a piece out for herself and handed the jar to Neville. "Give this to Harry then."

He accepted it gratefully before rushing off down the corridor. As Peri turned to put the jar back on its shelf, she suddenly heard a low voice behind her.

"Stealing, are we?"

She spun around to find Snape standing in the doorway, his dark eyes fixed on her.

"I was hoping to use some gillyweed for my next task," Peri explained quickly. "I need to breathe underwater for an hour."

Snape raised an eyebrow, his lips curling into a slight frown. "You could have asked me first, Peri. I would have gladly provided you with what you needed."

Feeling a twinge of guilt, Peri sheepishly held up the piece of gillyweed. "I apologize, Professor. I assumed being —"

"My child," he added coldly.

She gave a soft nod, "That you wouldn't mind. But you have yet to speak to me these past few days. It would be easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. Again, I'm sorry…I should go back to my dorm, though. " She stepped around him, "Thank you for the gillyweed."

He gave a stiffened nod as she left.

As she returned through the dark, stone corridors to Slytherin's common room, she suddenly ran into Draco. The torchlight cast flickering shadows on his sharp features as he stepped out from a side passage. "Where are you off to?" she asked with a curious tilt of her head.

A small, gentle smile tugged at his lips as he turned towards her. "To Snape's office," he said, his voice low and quiet. "He said Dumbledore needed to see me."

Peri felt a knot form in her stomach, her breath catching in her throat. "No!" she exclaimed, the fear evident in her tone.

His eyebrow raised in confusion, "No?" he repeated, his gaze searching hers for an explanation. "Peri, why don't you get some sleep," he suggested softly, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear.

Her eyes pleaded with him, "Please do not let them take you to the lake."

"The lake?" he echoed, his brow furrowing in concern. "Peri, it's nighttime. I'm not going to the lake in the dark."

Despite his reassurance, Peri couldn't shake off her nerves. "Please," she implored, gripping onto his arm. "Be careful. And please come back to me."

Draco's hand enveloped hers, his grip firm and reassuring. "I'll be back. Don't worry," he whispered before kissing gently on the back of her hand. With one final squeeze, he released her and made his way towards Snape's office.

Peri watched him until he disappeared from view, then hurried up the winding staircase to the Gryffindor common room. She raced through the corridors, her chest heaving as she finally reached the portrait of the Fat Lady. "Peri, welcome back. Do you have the password?" The Fat Lady asked with a friendly smile, but her expression quickly turned concerned when she saw Peri's flushed appearance.

"Is George here?" Peri gasped out between breaths.

"George Weasley? Um...no, he left just moments ago for McGonagall's office," the Fat Lady responded, puzzled by Peri's urgent tone.

Tears threatened to spill from Peri's eyes as she ran towards McGonagall's office. She couldn't lose them, not now. As she pushed herself to run faster, thoughts of what could happen if she didn't reach them in time consumed her mind.

Finally reaching their destination, she spotted George walking toward McGonagall's office. "George!" She called out, relief flooding her as she ran towards him and flung her arms around him.

Confused and taken aback, George tentatively wrapped his arms around her and rubbed soothing circles on her back. "Peri... what's wrong? Why are you crying?" He asked gently.

Sniffling, Peri pulled back slightly to look up at him with pleading eyes. "I can't lose you. Please, don't do it," she begged.

"I'm confused," George admitted, still holding her tight.

Just then, McGonagall approached them with a concerned expression. "Mr. Weasley, Ms. King? Is everything alright?"

Peri nodded, her grip on George's arms tightening. She couldn't let him go.

"She's fine," George reassured McGonagall before returning to Peri. "I am not in trouble. You should get some sleep; you have a busy day tomorrow."

Reluctantly letting go of him, she stepped back as he approached McGonagall's office.

Peri's pleading gaze met McGonagall's, her voice trembling with fear and concern. "Please, do not hurt them," she implored.

McGonagall approached her cautiously as if approaching a wild animal. Her eyes held a mix of suspicion and sympathy. "Professor Moody warned me that you may experience strong emotions upon learning the true object you are supposed to retrieve during the second task. How you learned this, I do not know. I doubt your mother or stepfather told you. But regardless, I have a dreamless sleep potion for you."

She withdrew a small vial from her pocket and held it out to Peri. The liquid inside shimmered in the dim light, casting an otherworldly glow. Peri hesitated before accepting it, her eyes flickering between the vial and McGonagall's face.

"Please," she pleaded again, tears streaming down her cheeks. "Do not let anything happen to them."

McGonagall's expression softened as she reached into her pocket again, pulling out a handkerchief with delicate lace trimmings. She handed it to Peri, who gratefully accepted it and wiped her tears away.

"Nothing bad will happen to anyone," McGonagall reassured her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Dumbledore and those in charge of the tournament have agreed with the merpeople to ensure the safety of all involved. You have to reach Mr. Weasley before your hour is up."

Peri's heart raced as McGonagall swiftly vanished into her office.

"Wait," Peri started. "What about Draco? We only get to rescue one? If I am to save George, who is saving Draco? No one else likes him."

Silence echoed through the corridor, broken only by Peri's shuddering breaths. She frantically scanned her surroundings, searching for any sign of life—anyone to help her. But there was none. The air was heavy with anticipation as if something was about to happen. Perhaps Snape needed Draco for another task, but it had nothing to do with tomorrow's task. She closed her eyes and then reopened them to make her way back to her dorm.

The next morning, as the sun rose over the horizon, Hallie busied herself with fitting Peri into her sleek white and black swimsuit. The material hugged Peri's curves perfectly; the low cut showed enough cleavage to be alluring. While Hallie worked, Peri gazed out her dorm room window, taking in the breathtaking view of the Black Lake. The water shimmered like liquid obsidian, reflecting the golden rays of sunlight that danced across its surface. The gentle sound of waves lapping against the shore could be heard through the open window, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere. Peri couldn't wait to take a dip in the cool, refreshing waters and bask in the beauty of her surroundings.

"Feeling nervous?" Hallie asked as she carefully put up her needle and thread.

Peri looked at her with worry etched on her face, "Did Fred mention anything about seeing George this morning?"

Hallie shook her head, "No, he said George never returned to their dorm last night after going to see McGonagall. Honestly, we figured he was with you. Your relationship is complicated, you know? Everyone knows you sleep with George, but you are dating Draco. What exactly does Draco get out of it?"

Peri closed her eyes, holding back tears, "Are we finished here?"

"Not quite. I still need to do your makeup and hair," Hallie replied, approaching her sister from behind and gently guiding her toward the vanity. She helped Peri into the black wood-stained chair with its plush velvet seating, "I much prefer Ravenclaw Tower, even though it's a bit of a walk. But the common room is absolutely beautiful, and the view is stunning."

Peri simply nodded, staring down at her hands. "No one told you to wear heels to school," she said.

"Well, they are quite stylish and cute. And besides, I have a closet back home filled with designer shoes - no-maj and wizarding. I especially love my Louis Vuitton heels," Hallie said proudly, glancing down at her sleek black pumps. Although they may appear simple initially, Hallie only settled for something cheap or ordinary. "But these were just from Madam Rosamund's shop."

"You could easily start your clothing line in the wizarding world. I'm sure the upper-class society would be eager to purchase your designs," Peri suggested.

"Maybe one day. But for now, I'm content with my life. I have Fred, who is not only the sweetest boyfriend but also incredibly handsome - it just makes everything better," Hallie gushed with a smile.

Peri chuckled softly, "He truly adores you."

Hallie smiled softly, her fingers brushing through Peri's hair as she spoke. "I used to dream of fame and fortune, hoping to marry a prince or someone who matched my standards. But then I found my sweet Freddie, and I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world."

Peri looked up from her hands to look at Hallie through the mirror. "I would rather be with George in a loving relationship…I think he loves me. I don't know if he does. I want him more than Draco. Draco is nice and not bad-looking either, but I don't want a romantic relationship with him. Friendship, I would not mind, but not a romantic one."

Hallie nodded, finishing Peri's hair and leaving it with a dusting of sparkle. "This is enchanted sparkle; it will help ward off the dangerous creatures lurking in the water, including the merpeople you may find."

"Thank you. That will help me a lot."

Hallie applied makeup on Peri's face, her skilled hands moving with precision and care. "You're welcome," she said, her voice soft but filled with warmth. "Just because Holly is barely speaking to you, that does not mean any of us want you to die."

Peri smiled gratefully, watching as Hallie used sparkles and glitter to enhance her features. "Well, I appreciate it anyway," she replied, "even if sparkles and glitter are more your style than mine."

Hallie giggled softly, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Perhaps," she said, "but we can also use those sparkles to spot you if we have to search for you in the dark. Another reason why you're dressed in half black and half white...think yin and yang. You'll stand out against the darkness of the lake."

Peri chuckled at Hallie's cleverness. "And people say you're not smart," she teased.

Hallie shrugged nonchalantly. "As Fred always says, 'I've always felt my future lay outside the world of academic achievement.' And I couldn't agree more. I don't need a Hogwarts diploma to be successful in life. I can make a name for myself without one. Just like Harry did."

"Harry lost his parents and survived the killing curse," Peri pointed out. "That's how he made a name for himself without a degree."

Hallie rolled her eyes as she finished Peri's makeup, "Fine then yourself. You might have a famous stepfather and a mother who became well-known for a scandal for having you, but you had your name become known for the tournament."

"This is a tournament I did not even want to compete in," she shook her head. We should go. Thank you again; the outfit, makeup, and hair are perfect."

"A job is never a job if you love what you do, and I love design and fashion."

Peri rose from the plush armchair, enveloping Hallie in a tight embrace that spoke of unwavering solidarity. "Time to win the second task," Hallie declared with a determined glint in her eye. Peri's silent nod conveyed her resolute determination as they exited the cozy confines of her dorm room.

Amidst the sea of people, she and Hallie began to weave their way through the bustling crowd towards the docks by the lake. As they made their way through the bustling crowd, Fred's voice sliced through the chatter that caught their attention.

"Peri?" Fred said as he approached them. "Hello, love," he pecked Hallie on the cheek before he continued to search for his brother among the swarms of people. The air was filled with excitement and anticipation as families and friends gathered to watch the second task.

Peri shook her head, her eyes darting nervously around. She pulled her cloak tightly around her body, hoping to blend in with the crowd. "Sorry I haven't," she mumbled. "Excuse me..." She turned and walked away, quickly navigating the maze of people. "Harry?"

He stopped when he heard his name and turned to face her; concern etched on his features. "Hey, Peri... what's wrong?" he asked, noticing the tension in her stance.

"It's just nerves," she replied, sounding casual despite the unease gnawing at her stomach. "But be careful today out there. Watch out for the merpeople."

Harry's eyebrows furrowed in confusion as if he did not believe her. "Thank you. I will try to remember that…did you ever figure out what to use to help you breathe?" he asked as they continued walking.

"Gillyweed."

He looked at her, surprised, "Really? Me too."

"Neville said. We broke into Snape's ingredient cupboard together."

"You stole from Snape…I know he's your dad, but still."

They reached the small boats, their wooden frames creaking slightly as they rocked on the gentle waves. Harry climbed into the boat first, ensuring it was stable before extending a hand to help her. The camera flash caught them off guard, but they quickly shrugged it off and focused on their task.

"Draco won't mind," she whispered to him.

"Wherever he is," she thought as she scanned the water as if she expected him to be in one of the boats already in the water.

The water lapped against the boat's sides, creating a soothing rhythm that drowned out other sounds. They pushed off from the docks.

Harry searched the other boats, looking for someone, "Have you seen Ron or Hermione? Fred said that George was missing, too. Speaking of Malfoy, where is he? He is your whatever he is to you. You would think he would be here to support you. And George. I did not see Cho at breakfast. Where is everyone?"

"Hermione and Ron are missing?"

Harry nodded.

Peri gazed into the murky depths of Black Lake, scanning the rippling surface as if searching for a familiar face among the shadows. "Something tells me we will see them soon," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

The boat glided smoothly across the serene, glass-like surface of the Black Lake. They stepped out onto the wooden boards as they approached the platform in the middle of the water. Harry parted from her, joining Neville and Mad-Eye as she made her way to her family. The cool breeze ruffled through her hair as she removed her cloak and handed it off to Mallory, revealing her outfit underneath.

"Hallie, did you have to flaunt your entire body?" Cassie playfully scolded, with a hint of admiration in her voice. Peri couldn't help but smirk at her sister's teasing remark.

"She looks amazing and will survive. It is enchanted to keep her body temperature normal," Hallie said.

Peri nodded, then looked out at the darkness of the lake, continuing to search for her friends.

"Are you ready?" Cassie asked, not even looking at her daughter.

"I believe so, Mom. I got everything I needed. My wand and some gillyweed."

"Good. Good. You remember how to swim?"

Peri nodded, "Of course, I know how. We grew up on the beach, and we only left last summer."

"I know, but I am your mother. I have to worry…and please save your object."

"I will."

"Peri," Ludo Bagman called out, his voice carrying over the crowd.

She ignored her family and turned to face the judges' table, where Bagman and Percy Weasley were waiting. With a quick smile, she excused herself and approached them, her heart racing with nerves and excitement.

Percy wasted no time chastising her, his tone bossy and disapproving, "Where have you been? The task is about to begin!"

Bagman intervened before Peri could respond, his cheerful voice cutting through the tension, "Now, now, Percy! She was with her family. I am sure they were wishing her luck. We can afford to delay the task by a few minutes to allow the champion's families to give their well–wishes if they are here."

Peri felt gratitude towards Bagman for understanding the importance of family support and taking the time to acknowledge it. She took a deep breath and steadied herself for the daunting task ahead, knowing her loved ones' encouragement and blessings were behind her.

Bagman squeezed Harry's shoulder quickly, then stood tall and pointed his wand at his throat, "Sonorus!" His voice boomed across the dark water and amongst the stands.

"Well, all our champions are ready for the second task, which will start on my whistle. They have precisely an hour to recover what has been taken from them. On the count of three, then. One…two… three!"

The sharp, piercing whistle echoed through the quiet, frigid air as the stands erupted with raucous cheers and thunderous applause. Peri quickly kicked off her shoes and reached into the small pockets stitched into her swimsuit, retrieving the gillyweed she had stashed there. The slimy, pungent plant filled her mouth with an unpleasant taste, and she felt a wave of nausea wash over her, but she forced herself to swallow it down, determined to save both Draco and George from their perilous fate under the lake's surface. She took a deep breath and plunged into the icy water, her heartbeat pounding in her ears as she fought against the current toward her friends' flailing figures.

She looked back at the crowd as she heard her name throughout the cheers, "Peri! Peri! Peri!"

She turned to look at Harry. "Together," they said, and they jumped in simultaneously.

The suit enveloped her body in a comforting warmth, and she could feel its enchantment working its magic. But then, she felt a strange pressure on her face, as if an invisible pillow was being pressed against her mouth and nose. Panic set in as she struggled to take a breath and call out for Harry's help, but he, too, seemed to be struggling. The world around her began to spin, and her lungs felt empty despite her desperate attempts to breathe. A sudden, sharp pain shot through both sides of her neck, causing her to cry out in agony.

Panic set in as she and Harry clutched their throats, feeling for air that was no longer there. Feeling their hands, they discovered two large slits just below their ears, flapping open and closed in the chill of the lake. It couldn't be true, but as Peri focused on Harry's appearance, she saw gills protruding from his neck. Her heart raced as she felt her body, only to see the same transformation on his face. They were no longer human but some aquatic creatures. The weight of this realization sunk in as they bobbed in the water, trying to come to terms with their new selves.

"Gills!" they mouthed.

A surge of excitement swept over Harry, causing him to race towards the water's surface. He leaped high into the air, flipping and twisting before gracefully plunging back down near her. She mirrored his movement, eager to show her family and friends she was alive and well. The crowd erupted in cheers and applause as she dove under the water again, reveling in the joy of being back among them.

Landing back in the water, she took a deep breath of the icy water. She felt rejuvenated and invigorated as if she were truly herself again.

Suddenly, a tap was on her shoulder, snapping her back to reality. It was Harry, signaling for her to follow him. With a grin on her face, she eagerly swam after him.

She gave a nod and two swam off together to find Draco, George, and whoever had been taken of Harry. It was surely Ron or Hermione, but which?

Together, they waded through a patch of meadow filled with seaweed that reached up to their waists. Peri kept her wand ready, scanning their surroundings for signs of danger. Though she felt a presence watching them, it seemed to be keeping its distance. Suddenly, the water around them shifted, and Hermione spun around just in time to see something grab hold of Harry's ankle.

Her heart raced as she got a clear look at the creature - a grindylow, its small, horned head poking out of the weeds, its long fingers wrapped tightly around Harry's leg. Its sharp fangs glinted in the sunlight as it bared them at Harry's webbed hand. Without hesitation, Peri lifted her wand and cast a spell at the attacking grindylow, but soon, two more appeared, determined to pull Harry down into the depths by his swimsuit. The murky water churned as they struggled against the creatures' strength, and Hermione knew they had to act fast before things took a turn for the worst.

"Relashio !" they both shouted, except neither one of them had a sound come out. A large bubble issued from their mouths as their wands sent sparks flying at the grindylows. Harry pulled himself free and swam quickly to Peri.

"You okay?" she mouthed, and he nodded and then continued.

"How are you two getting on?"

"Myrtle? Harry mouthed.

They whipped around and found her floating hazily in front of them, gazing at them through her glasses.

"Myrtle!"

"You want to try over there!" she pointed in the direction they needed to go. "I will not go with you. They do not like me, and I do not like them. They always chase me when I get too close."

With a quick thumbs-up, Harry and his companion showed their gratitude before continuing their journey. They swam cautiously, staying above the tangled seaweed and keeping a sharp eye out for any other creatures lurking in the depths below.

The water was murky and thick, like swimming through a pool of black mud. As they propelled themselves forward, the disturbed sediment swirled around them, evidence that someone had recently passed through. The song repeated in her mind, a haunting melody adding to her urgency. She glanced at her watch, fear gripping her heart as she realized time was running out. Two lives depended on her reaching their destination in time. With renewed determination, she kicked her legs harder and pushed through the water, Harry right beside her, matching her pace as they both raced against the clock. The only sounds were their heavy breathing and the splashing of their arms cutting through the water. Every second counted.

She suddenly heard a snippet of that haunting song, unsure if it was in her mind or real.

"An hour-long, you'll have to look. And recover what we took…"

They soon came upon a large rock that emerged from the muddy water. It had paintings of merpeople on it; they had spears and were chasing the giant squid that lived within the lake. The song continued, but this time, she knew it was in the real world, not her brain.

"...your time's half gone, so tarry not Lest what you seek stays here to rot…"

Draco.

George.

She had to save them both; she wouldn't leave one behind.

They came upon a whole crowd of merpeople in front of what appeared to be their homes, lined up like a village. A chair of merpeople was singing in the middle, calling the champions towards them, and behind them rose a crude sort of statue: a gigantic merperson hewed from a boulder. Six people were bound tightly to the tail of the stone merperson.

Ron was tied between Hermione and Cho. There was also a girl who looked no more than eight, who looked like a child version of Fleur. Surely, this was her person to save. Next to the child were George and Draco. She quickly reached them as Harry went to Ron and Hermione.

"George," she whispered, her voice ringing with urgency. She reached out to him, her fingertips brushing against his shoulder. "Georgie!" But he remained still, lost in a deep slumber.

She turned to Draco next, calling out his name softly. "Draco...Draco..." She gently brushed the hair from his forehead, revealing his peaceful face.

Looking around, I saw many merpeople with spears around them. She watched Harry swim quickly toward a seven-foot-tall merman with a long green beard and a choker of shark fangs. He attempted to mime a request to borrow the spear. The merman laughed and shook his head.

"We do not help. You and the champions save without help from us," he spoke in a harsh, croaky voice.

"Come ON!" Harry said fiercely as he tried to take the spear anyway, but it was snatched from him with a laugh.

Harry found two rocks, handed one to Peri, and then tapped his watch. She accepted the rock and thanked him as he went to free Ron first. She looked at George and Draco, who to rescue first.

Ron was saved before she even decided. Harry searched the area, but there were no other champions in sight. He began to work on saving Hermione, but the merpeople instantly came to attack, "You take your hostage," one of them said with a spear pointed at his throat, "Leave the others."

He shook his head furiously.

"Your task is to retrieve your friend…leave the others."

Peri's eyes darted between Draco and George, her heart pounding. With a sharp intake of breath, she decided that Draco would be the first to be saved. She grabbed his limp body, pushing it upwards until he broke through the water's surface. As she turned to retrieve George, a group of merpeople swam towards her, urging her to choose. "Choose one! Save only your friend!" they demanded.

Peri yelled back at them in a panic, gesturing towards Draco and George. "Draco is my boyfriend! And so is George!" But as she opened her mouth to explain further, only bubbles emerged from her lips. "There are six bodies down here," she pleaded with the merpeople. "Release George. He should not be counted."

Suddenly, Cedric showed up. " I got lost," he mouthed, looking stricken. Fleur and Krum are coming now!"

He withdrew a knife and cut Cho free, then pulled her away to the surface.

Harry and Peri exchanged looks, then searched the darkness for Fleur and Krum. They were nowhere in sight.

The merpeople were becoming excited as time drew closer to an end.

Suddenly, the merpeople released their grip on Harry as Krum arrived. He had transfigured himself into a shark. He swooped in and bit the ropes around Hermione before disappearing to the surface just as quickly as he appeared. This left Fleur's sister and George to be saved.

The two looked at each other again, "Get out of the way!" Harry yelled as he pointed his wand at all of them. Peri held her wand up as well to help him.

"One…" Only bubbles came out of their mouths, "Two…"

The merpeople began to scatter as Peri and Harry returned to trying to save the remaining two. It was slow, but she managed to save George first. She pushed him up to the surface and then looked at Harry, who motioned for her to go on as he continued to save Fleur's sister. She nodded and swam up to the surface.

The crowd erupted into cheers as she reached the surface. George was coughing beside her, so she looked at him. "Peri?" That was all he said.

She said nothing and swam to the platform where the crowd was.

With a gasp, Peri was lifted by Richard and Bagman, her body still shaking from the adrenaline rush. She felt a warm hands wrap a towel around her shivering form, while George anxiously paced nearby. Amidst the chaos of the crowd, Draco rushed over to her and pressed his lips against hers in a passionate kiss. Surprised by the sudden display of emotion, Peri melted into his embrace. Their lips parted as Rita Skeeter's camera flashed, capturing their intimate moment.

"You saved me," Draco breathed, gazing at her with gratitude and adoration.

"Of course," Peri replied with a smile until she caught sight of George's pained expression before he disappeared into the crowd with Fred and Hallie.

"He looked upset," Draco observed, concern etched on his face.

Peri let out a sigh and turned to face him fully. "He'll be okay. You are my..." She hesitated, glancing back at George before locking eyes with Draco once again. "You are my boyfriend." The words felt foreign yet right on her tongue, solidifying their relationship.

Draco's lips grazed her cheek as Harry burst out of the water, gasping for air, with Fleur's sister in tow. The crowd erupted into cheers, their voices echoing off the stone walls of the Black Lake. Peri emerged soon after, bringing up a fifth person, only to be followed by another person struggling in her grasp.

Fleur fussed over Harry and Ron, thanking them profusely for saving her sister. Madam Pomfrey approached Draco and Peri, concern etched on her face. "How are you both?" she asked.

"My father will hear about this," Draco exclaimed indignantly. "Giving me a potion to sleep overnight underwater in the Black Lake? That is dangerous, and it risked my girlfriend's life. The ministry will be hearing from him."

Madam Pomfrey let out an exasperated sigh. "And you, Peri?"

"I'm fine," Peri answered confidently. "Thanks to my sister Hallie's designs, I stayed warm."

"Ms. King," Madam Pomfrey said with a furrowed brow. "You were down there a long time with Mr. Potter. Are you sure you're alright?"

Peri nodded firmly. "Yes. I was trying to save two people, not one. There were six people in that water, not five. Fleur could not complete her rescue, so Harry stepped in, and I was helping my boyfriend...and friend."

Madam Pomfrey gave a small nod before attending to other students.

"You used all your time trying to save Weasley?" Draco whispered, looking slightly hurt.

Peri turned to face him, meeting his gaze calmly. "I saved you first; remember that," she reminded him sternly. "I had to choose because I didn't know if I could save both of you. And I chose you."

Bagman's voice erupted over the crowd as Draco wrapped his arms around Peri to keep her warm. His voice made everyone jump, and everything grew silent.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we have reached our decision. Merchieftainess Murcus has told us exactly what happened at the bottom of the lake, and we, therefore, decided to award marks out of fifty to each of the champions, as follows…"

"Fleur Delacour, though she demonstrated excellent use of the Bubble-Head Charm, was attacked by grindylows as she approached her goal and failed to retrieve her hostage. We award twenty-five points."

Applause sounded from the crowd around them.

"Cedric Diggory, who also used the Bubble-Head Charm, was the first to return with his hostage, though he returned one minute outside the time limit of an hour." Cheers erupted from the Hufflepuffs, and Cho gave Cedric a glowing look. "We, therefore, award him forty-seven points."

"Peri King and Harry Potter both used gillyweed to excellent effect," Bagman continued, "Ms. King returned second to last and well outside the time limit of an hour, while Mr. Potter returned last as well outside the time limit. However, Merchieftainess informs us that Ms. King reached the hostages simultaneously with Mr. Potter. Making them the first ones to reach the hostages. They were delayed due to Mr. Potter saving Ms. Delacour's sister while Ms. King saved a hostage who never should have been in the water to begin with. There was a mistake in selecting her hostage, and two ended up in the water for her. We award them both forty-five points."

Draco looked at her, "You are in second place!"

"With Harry, and we still have Viktor."

"Does not matter. You did it!"

Viktor was awarded third place.

Cheers sounded again as those around her congratulated her.

"The third and final task will take place at dusk on the twenty-fourth of June," Bagman continued, "The champions will be notified of what is coming precisely a month beforehand. Thank you all for your support of the champions."

The task was done, but she needed to find George.

They returned to land and began going to the castle, "I need a hot bath after that…or a drink."

Draco laughed, "Both?"

"Even better."

The two laughed as she found Fred, George, and Hallie near a tree, "Excuse me."

Draco followed her gaze, "I will see you in the common room."

She nodded and went to the trio. "Hallie, dear, how about we go back to the Gryffindor common room and celebrate Harry?" Fred suggested.

Hallie looked at Peri and thenat him. " It's much better than hanging around them. If I wanted dram,a I would read a book or turn on a no-maj show."

Fred laughed as they left.

"I'm sorry..." Peri began.

But George cut her off with a wave of his hand. "I'm done," he said firmly. "I refuse to continue living like this, Peri," he continued, his voice low and intense. "Either you're with me, or you're not. Choose."

"I can't," she began to tear up."Chapter 17: The Second Task

The evening before The Second Task, Peri sat in the library surrounded by stacks of books. She furrowed her brow in concentration as she searched for a way to breathe underwater. The soft glow of lamplight illuminated her, casting shadows on the pages of ancient texts that covered every available surface. Suddenly, the silence was interrupted by the arrival of Hallie, Holly, and Ida. They approached Peri with curious expressions and a determination to help. Hallie's nose crinkled at the sight of the chaotic scene around them, but her focus remained on their sister in need.

"I need your help, Holly. I just discovered the clue and its meaning a few days ago. I've been holed up in the library since then, trying to unravel its secrets."

Peri let out a frustrated sigh as she flipped through the books sprawled out on the table before them. "I've been a little preoccupied lately," she defended herself.

Holly groaned, "I shouldn't even be helping you. I'm still angry at you for stealing Draco away from me."

Peri rolled her eyes, "He was never going to date you, Holly. He may care for you, but he would never go against his family's values and traditions."

"Snape's allegiance to the Malfoy family, intertwined with Richard's aristocratic roots, provides me with advantages of being close to Draco," Peri reminded Holly. "Despite my repeated clarifications to you about my association with Draco you just do not seem to believe me. We are doing this for the press that is all."

Holy picked up a book herself still not pleased with the answer.

"Fine, technically we had a penthouse in the Upper West End, but we didn't actually live there."

"I do not care for the press," Ida spoke up, "All they want to know is about my father. When he was in prison all they asked was how I felt being the daughter of a murderer. Then he escaped and they started asking if I knew his location.

She knew what her friend were trying to do - offer words of comfort and support - but the pain was still too fresh.

"Yes, well, he chose to find Harry first," she finally spoke up, her voice filled with bitterness. "Not my brother and me. We were never his first choice, he wanted Harry."

Peri shook her head in disbelief. "He wanted Peter Pettigrew," she stated bluntly.

"Uncle Remus mentioned that last summer when he came back to France," Ida said, grabbing a book from the nearby shelf: Magical Water Plants of the Highland Lochs.

"I don't believe it," Peri exclaimed, flipping through the pages of the book. "Your father loves you and your brother. He wouldn't abandon you like this."

But deep down, Ida couldn't shake off the feeling of hurt and betrayal from her father's actions. She hoped her friends were right, but it was hard to let go of years of longing for a father and when she could finally have him he chose someone else.

"So, what is the clue?" Holly asked, her fingers tapping impatiently on the ancient spell book in front of her. She had grown tired of Peri's distractions and was eager to get back to their original task at hand.

Peri continued to scan over the text in her own book, her brow furrowed in concentration as she repeated the clue aloud, "Come seek us where our voices sound, we cannot sing above the ground."

Holly nodded, "Easy, the Black Lake. Merpeople live there. And this time you don't have to face a dragon, just some underwater creature. What else does the clue say?"

"An hour long you'll have to look," replied Peri with a sigh.

"Again, easy. Just give us a specific time frame to find whatever it is you need from under the lake."

Peri gave her sister a skeptical look, "Do you even remember the last time you held your breath for an hour? Or for any lengthy period of time?"

Holly shook her head and continued flipping through her book.

Suddenly, Hallie stood up from her spot at a nearby table, causing both Holly and Peri to jump in surprise. "Well, it's not that hard," she chimed in confidently. "I do it all the time with Fred."

"Ew!" Holly and Peri exclaimed in unison, turning to look at Hallie with disgust.

"Ladies," scolded Madam Pince as she glared at them from across the library, "Quiet down or leave. This is a place of study, not chatter."

"Sorry," they mumbled sheepishly as she stalked away.

Now, with only hours left before the event, I need to create a waterproof outfit that was not only cute and sexy, but also school appropriate. Because I got in too much trouble with the first task outfit. Who doesn't love a skin tight outfit? Fred certainly does."

"Again did not need to know that," Holly said with a disgusted shake of her head.

Hallie made her way down the row not caring what others thought of her and Fred.

"Thank you, Hal. I love you for this," Peri told her.

"I know. None of you would understand fashion without me. Except for Ida, but she's French."

Peri and Holly exchanged eye rolls as Hallie exited the library, leaving them to their studies. But just as they were about to delve back into their books, Ida let out a gasp, drawing their attention once again.

"Gillyweed! Another champion must be planning to use it," Ida exclaimed, her finger tracing over a well-worn page in the book she was reading.

You actually know how to use it?"

Peri shrugged nonchalantly. "I've tried...but right now, I need to go get some gillyweed."

Ida and Holly nodded as they helped return the books to their rightful places. Mad-Eye rounded the corner, his one magical eye fixated on something in the distance. "Ladies," he said gruffly, "may I have a word alone with King?"

"They were just leaving," Peri spoke up, gesturing towards her sister and friend. "Goodnight," she said with a polite smile before they left.

"Goodnight," Mad-Eye called after them, his gravelly voice echoing down the hallway.

Once they were gone, Peri turned her full focus back to Mad-Eye. "How can I help you, Professor?" she asked respectfully.

He examined her closely, his magical eye moving to scan every inch of her being. "Are you prepared?" he questioned. "Took you a long time to figure out the egg."

She glanced at the dragon egg sitting beside her, its golden scales shimmering in the dim light.

As Neville approached them, "No, sir...I'm sure Professor...Snape won't mind if Peri borrows ingredients," he stammered, trying to keep his voice steady.

Mad-Eye's gruff voice cut through the air, "Then you and Peri can get the ingredients you both need."

Without another word, he turned and left the two alone in the row of books.

Neville let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding before turning to Peri. She put up her final book before placing a hand on his back, "Come on, Neville."

They left the library and made their way to Snape's potion ingredient cupboard.

"What are you needing?" Neville asked, breaking the tense silence between them.

"I need gillyweed to complete the second task," Peri replied.

Neville's eyes widened in excitement, "Really? So does Harry. I'm supposed to get it for him. I was scared to have to break into the cupboard, but it should be alright since you need it too."

Peri shrugged nonchalantly, "He's not speaking to me right now, though."

"Oh...um...I'm sorry to hear that," Neville said sympathetically. "I never like it when my Nan and I aren't speaking. It's hard, it must be really hard with a parent."

Peri gave another shrug, "I don't truly know him. He's sort of trying but not much."

Climbing up the rusty ladder, Peri carefully reached for the jar and opened it, immediately recoiling at the pungent smell that wafted out. "Gillyweed," she muttered to herself as she gave the plant a cautious sniff. "And this will help?"

Neville nodded eagerly. "Yes, gillyweed allows the consumer to breathe underwater for an hour."

Satisfied with this information, Peri took a piece out for herself and handed the jar to Neville. "Give this to Harry then."

He accepted it gratefully before rushing off down the corridor. As Peri turned to put the jar back on its shelf, she suddenly heard a low voice behind her.

"Stealing are we?"

Feeling a twinge of guilt, Peri held up the piece of gillyweed sheepishly. "I apologize, Professor. I simply assumed being —"

"My child," he added coldly.

She gave a soft nod, "That you wouldn't mind. But you have not been speaking to me these past few days, I thought this would be easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. Again I'm sorry…I should go back to my dorm though," she stepped around him, "Thank you for the gillyweed."

He gave a stiffened nod as she left.

As she made her way back through the dark, stone corridors to Slytherin's common room, she suddenly ran into Draco.

"Peri, why don't you get some sleep," he suggested softly, reaching out to brush a strand of hair behind her ear.

Don't worry," he whispered before placing a gentle kiss on the back of her hand.

Tears threatened to spill from Peri's eyes as she took off running towards McGonagall's office. She couldn't lose them, not now. As she pushed herself to run faster, thoughts of what could happen if she didn't reach them in time consumed her mind.

Finally reaching their destination, she spotted George walking toward McGonagall's office. "George!" She called out, relief flooding through her as she ran towards him and flung her arms around him.

Confused and taken aback, George tentatively wrapped his arms around her and rubbed soothing circles on her back. "Peri...what's wrong? Why are you crying?" He asked gently.

Sniffling, Peri pulled back slightly to look up at him with pleading eyes. "I can't lose you. Please, don't do it," she begged.

"I'm confused," George admitted, still holding onto her tight.

Just then, McGonagall approached them with a concerned expression. "Mr. Weasley, Ms. King? Is everything alright?"

Peri nodded, her grip on George's arms tightening. She couldn't let him go.

"She's fine," George reassured McGonagall before turning back to Peri. "I am not in trouble. You should get some sleep you have a busy day tomorrow."

Reluctantly letting go of him, she stepped back as he made his way towards McGonagall's office.

Peri's pleading gaze met McGonagall's, her voice trembling with fear and concern. "Please, do not hurt them," she implored.

McGonagall approached her cautiously, as if approaching a wild animal.

McGonagall's expression softened as she reached into her pocket once more, pulling out a handkerchief with delicate lace trimmings. She handed it to Peri, who gratefully accepted it and wiped her tears away.

"Nothing bad will happen to anyone," McGonagall reassured her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Dumbledore and those in charge of the tournament have made an agreement with the merpeople to ensure the safety of all involved. You just have to reach Mr.

She frantically scanned her surroundings, searching for any sign of life. Anyone to help her. But there was none. The air was heavy with anticipation, as if something was about to happen. Perhaps Snape needed Draco for another task and it had nothing to do with tomorrow's task. She closed her eyes and then reopened them to make her way back to her dorm.

The next morning, as the sun rose over the horizon, Hallie busied herself with fitting Peri into her sleek white and black swimsuit. The material hugged Peri's curves perfectly, the low cut showing just enough cleavage to be alluring. While Hallie worked, Peri gazed out the window of her dorm room, taking in the breathtaking view of the Black Lake. The water shimmered like liquid obsidian, reflecting the golden rays of sunlight that danced across its surface. The gentle sound of waves lapping against the shore could be heard through the open window, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere. Peri couldn't wait to take a dip in the cool, refreshing waters and bask in the beauty of her surroundings

Honestly we figured he was with you. Your relationship is really complicated you know? You sleep with George, which everyone knows, but you are dating Draco. What exactly does Draco get out of it?"

Peri closed her eyes, holding back tears, "Are we finished here?"

"Not quite. I still need to do your makeup and hair," Hallie replied, approaching her sister from behind and gently guiding her towards the vanity. She helped Peri into the black wood-stained chair with its plush velvet seating, "I much prefer Ravenclaw Tower, even though it's a bit of a walk. But the common room is absolutely beautiful and the view is stunning."

Peri simply nodded, staring down at her hands, "No one told you to wear heels to school."

"Well, they are quite stylish and cute. And besides, I have a closet back home filled with designer shoes - both no-maj and wizarding. I especially love my Louis Vuitton heels," Hallie said proudly, glancing down at her sleek black pumps. Although they may appear simple at first glance, Hallie never settled for anything cheap or ordinary. "But these were just from Madam Rosemund's shop."

"You could easily start your own clothing line in the wizarding world. I'm sure the upper-class society would be eager to purchase your designs," Peri suggested.

"Maybe one day. But for now, I'm content with my life. I have Fred who is not only the sweetest boyfriend but also incredibly handsome - it just makes everything better," Hallie gushed with a smile.

Peri chuckled softly, "He truly adores you."

Hallie smiled softly, her fingers gently brushing through Peri's hair as she spoke. "I used to dream of fame and fortune, hoping to marry a prince or at least someone who matched my standards. But then I found my sweet Freddie, and I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world."

Peri looked up from her hands to look at Hallie through the mirror, "I would rather be with George in a loving relationship…I think he loves me. I don't know if he does. I want him more than Draco. Draco is nice and he is not bad looking either, but I don't want a romantic relationship with him. Friendship I would not mind, but not a romantic one."

Hallie nodded finishing Peri's hair and leaving it with a dusting of sparkle, "This is enchanted sparkle it will help ward off the dangerous creatures lurking in the water. This includes the merpeople you may find."

"Perhaps," she said, "but we can also use those sparkles to spot you if we have to go searching for you in the dark.

"A tournament I did not even want to compete in," she shook her head, "We should go. Thank you again, the outfit and the makeup are perfect as well as the hair."

"A job is never a job if you love what you do and I love design and fashion."

Amidst the sea of people, her and Hallie began to weave their way through the bustling crowd towards the docks by the lake. As they made their way through the bustling crowd, Fred's voice sliced through the chatter that caught their attention.

"Peri?" Fred said as he approached them. "Hello love," he pecked Hallie on the cheek before he continued to search for his brother among the swarms of people. The air was filled with excitement and anticipation, as families and friends gathered to watch the second task.

Peri shook her head, her eyes darting nervously around. She pulled her cloak tightly around her body, hoping to blend in with the crowd. "Sorry I haven't," she mumbled. "Excuse me..." She turned and walked away, quickly making her way through the maze of people. "Harry?"

He stopped when he heard his name and turned to face her, concern etched on his features. "Hey Peri...what's wrong?" he asked, noticing the tension in her stance.

"It's just nerves," she replied, trying to sound casual despite the unease gnawing at her stomach. "But be careful today out there. Watch out for the merpeople."

Harry's eyebrows furrowed in confusion as if he did not believe her. "Thank you. I will try to remember that…did you ever figure out what to use to help you breathe?" he asked as they continued walking.

"Gillyweed."

He looked at her surprised, "Really? Me too."

"Neville said. We broke into Snape's ingredient cupboard together."

"You stole from Snape…I know he's your dad, but still."

They reached the small boats, their wooden frames creaking slightly as they rocked on the gentle waves. Harry climbed into the boat first, making sure it was stable before extending a hand to help her in. The flash of a camera caught them off guard, but they quickly shrugged it off and focused on their task at hand.

"Draco won't mind," she whispered to him.

"Wherever he is," she thought to herself as she scanned the water as if she expected him to be in one of the boats already in the water.

The water lapped against the sides of the boat, creating a soothing rhythm that drowned out any other sounds. They pushed off from the docks.

Harry searched the other boats as if he were looking for someone, "Have you seen Ron or Hermione? Fred said that George is missing, too. Speaking of Malfoy, where is he?He is your whatever he is to you. You would think he would be here to support you. And George. I did not see Cho at breakfast. Where is everyone?"

"Hermione and Ron are missing?"

Harry nodded.

Peri gazed into the murky depths of the Black Lake, her eyes scanning the rippling surface as if searching for a familiar face among the shadows. "Something tells me we will see them soon," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

The boat glided smoothly across the serene, glass-like surface of the Black Lake. As they approached the platform in the middle of the water, they stepped out onto the wooden boards.

Peru nodded then looked out at the darkness of the lake continuing to search for her friends.

"Are you ready?" Cassie asked not even looking at her daughter.

"I believe so, Mom. I got everything I need. My wand and some gillyweed."

"Good. Good. You remember how to swim?"

Peri nodded, "We grew up on the beach, of course I know how. We only left last summer."

"I know, but I am your mother I have to worry…and please be sure to save your object."

"I will."

"Peri," Ludo Bagman called out, his voice carrying over the the crowd.

She tore her gaze away from her family and turned to face the judges' table, where Bagman and Percy Weasley were waiting. With a quick smile, she excused herself and made her way towards them, her heart racing with nerves and excitement.

Percy wasted no time in chastising her, his tone bossy and disapproving, "Where have you been? The task is about to begin!"

Bagman intervened before Peri could respond, his jovial voice cutting through the tension, "Now, now, Percy! She was with her family. I am sure they were wishing her luck. We can afford to delay the task by a few minutes to allow the champion's families – if they are here – to give their well-wishes."

Peri felt a wave of gratitude towards Bagman for understanding the importance of family support and taking the time to acknowledge it. She took a deep breath and steadied herself for the daunting task ahead, knowing that she had her loved ones' encouragement and blessings behind her.

Bagman gave Harry's shoulder a quick squeeze then stood tall and pointed his wand at his throat, " Sonorus! " His voice boomed across the dark water and amongst the stands.

"Well, all our champions are ready for the second task, which will start on my whistle. They have precisely an hour to recover what has been taken from them. On the count of three, then. One…two… three! "

The sharp, piercing whistle echoed through the quiet, frigid air as the stands erupted with raucous cheers and thunderous applause. Peri quickly kicked off her shoes and reached into the small pockets stitched into her swimsuit, retrieving the gillyweed she had stashed there. The slimy, pungent plant filled her mouth with an unpleasant taste and she felt a wave of nausea wash over her, but she forced herself to swallow it down, determined to save both Draco and George from their perilous fate under the lake's surface. She took a deep breath and plunged into the icy water, her heartbeat pounding in her ears as she fought against the current towards her friends' flailing figures.

She looked back at the crowd as she heard her name throughout the cheers, "Peri! Peri! Peri!"

She turned to look at Harry, "Together," they said and jumped in at the same time.

The suit enveloped her body in a comforting warmth, and she could feel its enchantment working its magic. But then, she felt a strange pressure on her face, as if an invisible pillow was being pressed against her mouth and nose. Panic set in as she struggled to take a breath and call out for Harry's help, but he too seemed to be struggling. The world around her began to spin, and her lungs felt empty despite her desperate attempts to breathe. A sudden, sharp pain shot through both sides of her neck, causing her to cry out in agony.

Panic set in as her and Harry clutched their throats, feeling for air that was no longer there. Feeling their hands they discovered two large slits just below their ears, flapping open and closed in the chill of the lake. It couldn't be true, but as Peri focused on Harry's appearance, she saw it: gills protruding from his neck. Her heart raced as she felt her body, only to see the same transformation on his face. They were no longer human, but some kind of aquatic creatures. The weight of this realization sunk in as they bobbed in the water, trying to come to terms with their new selves.

"Gills!" they mouthed.

A surge of excitement swept over Harry, causing him to race towards the surface of the water. He leapt high into the air, flipping and twisting before gracefully plunging back down near her. She mirrored his movement, eager to show her family and friends that she was alive and well. The crowd erupted in cheers and applause as she dove under the water once more, reveling in the joy of being back among them.

Landing back in the water she took in a deep breath of the icy water, she felt rejuvenated and invigorated, as if she were truly herself again.

Suddenly, there was a tap on her shoulder, snapping her back to reality. It was Harry, signaling for her to follow him. With a grin on her face, she eagerly swam after him.

She gave a nod and two swam off together to find Draco and George, and whoever had been taken of Harry. It was surely Ron or Hermione, but who was his.

Together, they waded through a patch of meadow filled with seaweed that reached up to their waists. Peri kept her wand at the ready, scanning their surroundings for any signs of danger. Though she felt a presence watching them, it seemed to be keeping its distance. Suddenly, the water around them shifted and Hermione spun around just in time to see something grab hold of Harry's ankle.

Her heart raced as she got a clear look at the creature - a grindylow, its small, horned head poking out of the weeds, its long fingers wrapped tightly around Harry's leg. Its sharp fangs glinted in the sunlight as it bared them at Harry's webbed hand. Without hesitation, Peri lifted her wand and cast a spell at the attacking grindylow, but soon two more appeared, determined to pull Harry down into the depths by his swimsuit.

"You ok?" she mouthed and he gave a nod and then continued.

"How are you two getting on?"

"Myrtle? Harry mouthed.

They whipped around and found her floating hazily in front of them, gazing at them through her glasses.

"Myrtle!"

"You want to try over there!" she pointed in the direction they needed to go, "I will not go with you, they do not like me and I do not like them. They always chase me when I get too close."

With a quick thumbs-up, Harry and his companion showed their gratitude before continuing on their journey.

The song played on repeat in her mind, a haunting melody that added to the urgency she felt. She glanced down at her watch, fear gripping her heart as she realized time was running out.

"An hour-long you'll have to look. And recover what we took…"

They soon came upon a large rock that emerged from the muddy water. It had paintings of merpeople on it; they had spears and were chasing the giant squid that lived within the lake. The song continued, this time she knew it was in the real world not her brain.

"...your time's half gone, so tarry not Lest what you seek stays here to rot…"

Draco.

George.

She had to save them both, she wouldn't leave one behind.

They came upon a whole crowd of merpeople in front of what appeared to be their homes that were lined up like a village. A chair of merpeople was singing in the middle calling the champions towards them, and behind them rose a crude sort of statue; a gigantic merperson hewed from a boulder. Six people were bound tightly to the tail of the stone merperson.

Ron was tied between Hermione and Cho. There was also a girl who looked no more than eight, who looked like a child version of Fleur surely this was her person to save. And there next to the child were George and Draco, she quickly reached them as Harry went to Ron and Hermione.

Looking around there were many merpeople around them with spears.

Harry found two rocks and handed one to Peri then tapped his watch. She accepted the rock and thanked him as he went to free Ron first. She looked at George and Draco, who to rescue first.

Ron was saved before she even decided. Harry searched the area, there were no other champions in sight. He began to work on saving Hermione, but the merpeople instantly came to attack, "You take your hostage," one of them said with a spear pointed at his throat, "Leave the others."

He shook his head furiously.

"Your task is to retrieve your friend…leave the others."

Peri's eyes darted between Draco and George, her heart pounding in her chest. With a sharp intake of breath, she made her decision: Draco would be the first to be saved. She reached out and grabbed his limp body, pushing it upwards until he broke through the surface of the water. As she turned to retrieve George, a group of merpeople swam towards her, urging her to make a choice. "Choose one! Save only your friend!" they demanded.

In a panic, Peri yelled back at them, gesturing towards both Draco and George. "Draco is my boyfriend! And so is George!" But as she opened her mouth to explain further, only bubbles emerged from her lips. "There are six bodies down here," she pleaded with the merpeople. "Release George. He should not be counted."

Suddenly Cedric showed up, "Got lost," he mouthed looking panic-stricken, "Fleur and Krum are coming now!"

He withdrew a knife and cut Cho free then pulled her away to the surface.

Harry and Peri exchanged looks then searched the darkness for Fleur and Krum. They were nowhere in sight.

The merpeople were becoming excited as time drew closer to an end.

Suddenly the merpeople released their grip on Harry as Krum arrive, he had transfigured himself into a shark. He swooped in and bit the ropes around Hermione before disappearing to the surface just as quickly as he appeared. This left Fleur's sister and George to be saved.

The two looked at each other once more, "Get out of the way!" Harry yelled as he pointed his wand at all of them. Peri held her wand up as well to help him.

"One…" Only bubbles came out of their mouths, "Two…"

The merpeople instantly began to scatter as Peri and Harry returned to trying to save the remaining two. It was slow, but she managed to save George first. She pushed him up to the surface and then looked at Harry who motioned her to go on as he continued to save Fleur's sister. She gave a nod and swam up to the surface.

The crowd erupted into cheers as she reached the surface with George coughing next to her, she looked at him. "Peri?" That was all he said.

She said nothing and swam to the platform where the crowd was.

With a gasp, Peri was lifted up by Richard and Bagman, her body still shaking from the adrenaline rush. Their lips parted as Rita Skeeter's camera flashed, capturing the intimate moment between them.

"You saved me," Draco breathed, gazing at her with gratitude and adoration.

"Of course," Peri replied with a smile, until she caught sight of George's pained expression before he disappeared into the crowd with Fred and Hallie.

"He looked upset," Draco observed, concern etched on his face.

Peri let out a sigh and turned to face him fully. "He'll be okay. You are my..." She hesitated, glancing back at George before locking eyes with Draco once again. "You are my boyfriend." The words felt foreign yet right on her tongue, solidifying their relationship in that moment.

That is dangerous and it risked my girlfriend's life. The ministry will be hearing from him."

Madam Pomfrey let out an exasperated sigh. "And you, Peri?"

"I'm fine," Peri answered confidently. "I stayed warm thanks to my sister Hallie's designs."

"Ms. King," Madam Pomfrey said with a furrowed brow. "You were down there a long time with Mr. Potter. Are you sure you're alright?"

Peri nodded firmly. "Yes. I was trying to save two people, not one. There were six people in that water, not five. Fleur was unable to complete her rescue, so Harry stepped in and I was helping my boyfriend...and friend."

Madam Pomfrey gave a small nod before moving on to attend to other students.

"You used all your time trying to save Weasley?" Draco whispered, looking slightly hurt.

Peri turned to face him, meeting his gaze calmly. "I saved you first, remember that," she reminded him sternly. "I had to make a choice because I didn't know if I could save both of you. And I chose you."

Bagman's voice then erupted over the crowd as Draco wrapped his arms around Peri to keep her warm more. His voice made everyone jump and everything grew silent.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we have reached our decision. Merchieftainess Murcus has told us exactly what happened at the bottom of the lake and we, therefore, decided to award marks out of fifty to each of the champions, as follows…"

"Fleur Delacour, though she demonstrated excellent use of the Bubble-Head Charm, was attacked by grindylows as she approached her goal, and failed to retrieve her hostage. We award twenty-five points"

Applause sounded from the crowd around them.

"Cedric Diggory, who also used the Bubble-Head Charm, was the first to return with his hostage, though he returned one minute outside the time limit of an hour." Cheers erupted from the Hufflepuffs and Cho gave Cedric a glowing look. "We, therefore, award him forty-seven points."

"Peri King and Harry Potter both used gillyweed to excellent effect," Bagman continued, "Ms. King returned second to last and well outside the time limit of an hour, while Mr. Potter returned last as well outside the time limit. However, Merchieftainess informs us Ms. King reached the hostages at the same time as Mr. Potter. Making them the first ones to reach the hostages. They were delayed due to Mr. Potter saving Ms. Delacour's sister while Ms. King saved a hostage who never should have been in the water, to begin with. There was a mistake in selecting her hostage and two ended up in the water for her. We award them both forty-five points."

Draco looked at her, "You are in second place!"

"With Harry and we still have Viktor."

They returned to land and began to make their way to the castle, "I need a hot bath after that…or a drink."

Draco laughed, "Both?"

"Even better."

The two laughed as she found Fred, George, and Hallie near a tree, "Excuse me."

Draco followed her gaze, "I will see you in the common room."

She nodded and went to the trio, "Hallie, dear how about we go back to Gryffindor common room and celebrate Harry?" Fred suggested.

Hallie looked at Peri and then him, "Much better than hanging around them. If I wanted drama I would read a book or turn on a no-maj show."

Fred laughed as they left.

"I'm sorry..." Peri began.

But George cut her off with a wave of his hand. "I'm done," he said firmly. "I refuse to continue living like this, Peri," he continued, his voice low and intense. "Either you're with me or you're not. Choose."

"I can't," she began to tear up."

"I had my life put at risk because they know you love me," he added, his voice cracking slightly. "Can't you just say it?"

Peri's eyes began to well up with tears as she shook her head. "I can't," she whispered.

"Eight letters. Three words. It is all I ask of you. Tell me you want me not him."

But Peri couldn't bring herself to say the words he so desperately wanted to hear.

"That is what I thought. You keep choosing him. You say you want me but every time you are running right back to him."

With a heavy heart and shoulders slumped, George slowly turned and walked away from Peri. As she watched him leave, the darkness of the cool winter air seemed to wrap around her like a thick cloak, matching the weight in her chest.

As he walked away he could feel Peri's gaze on his back.

Her tears falling like tiny crystals onto the cold ground. The stars above seemed to twinkle with sadness, mirroring their emotions.
