Luke rushed down the hospital hallway trying to avoid seeing anything that would make his stomach turn. Following the signs and coloured stripes on the wall he quickly found the maternity waiting area. His furrowed brow smoothed and he smiled when he saw Lorelai, looking gorgeous, pacing the floor with a phone to her ear.
"I swear, Sookie will not be mad that you left. Really? Hon, you're watching Davey! That is honestly the best thing you can do for her right now. You are giving her the comfort of knowing her child is safe and happy so she can focus on this."
Luke waved as he approached so he didn't startle her. She smiled when he kissed her cheek and rubbed her belly. He didn't even realize that every time he saw her since her bump appeared he had to touch it.
"Okay Sweets, I'm going to go. Luke's here now and I wanna kiss my man. I'll let you know when there's more news. Thanks again for watching Davey." She closed her phone and turned to Luke. "Hey you!" They shared a sweet kiss while he caressed her stomach and then moved to full on hug her.
"How's everything going?" Luke asked into her hair.
Lorelai sighed, "Poor Jackson. Sookie was trying to arrange for him to have a vasectomy today. Jackson and I convinced her now was not the time to make big, life changing, painful, decisions. Jackson told me that he owes me. So if you need a discount on produce for the diner now's a good time to ask!"
Luke softly chuckled, as he led her to sit down, "How are you feeling? Is being here freaking you out?"
She shrugged, "I'm okay. Sookie was crying all the way here because she thinks she ruined my shower. I promised her that as long as I still got all the gifts I didn't need a party. I guess I'm a little freaked because it was my Mom that noticed Sookie was in pain, not me."
"So?"
"You would think being pregnant myself, that I would recognize it better."
"Don't beat yourself up. We were with Sookie last night and she told us the doctor said she was on target for her due date, plus wasn't Davey late?"
Lorelai looked at her doting Husband, the only person who could really calm her and discourage her feelings of inadequacy. "I love you," she sighed. Then she kissed him sweetly and rested her head on his shoulder. They sat like that quietly waiting, her head on his shoulder, his arm around her until he noticed she had fallen asleep. Between her giving up more than one cup of coffee daily and the fact that she was inching closer to her third trimester, she was tired more often. He loved the quiet moments where he got to hold her, or look at her while she slept. It was a drastic change from the woman he was used to, constantly caffeinated and moving.
"Hey guys," Jackson whispered as he approached.
Luke smiled brightly, "Hey! So?"
"It's a girl," Jackson beamed excitedly.
"A GIRL!" Lorelai jumped into Jackson's arms, "Congratulations!"
Luke stood and shook Jackson's hand.
"Mom and Baby are all healthy. The nurses said to give them some time to clean them up a bit. I'm going to call some family. You can wait in room 435, there's a private bathroom in case your baby is dancing on your bladder like ours was to Sookie."
Jackson dashed off to make calls and waved. Lorelai smiled at Luke, I'm going to take advantage of the private washroom. Could you call Rory and let her know?"
"Sure," Luke agreed. "But I'm doing it in Sookie's room so I don't see don't see anything crazy in the halls."
"Fair enough," she linked her arm through his and they headed off in the direction of the maternity ward rooms.
XoXoXoXoXo
That evening Luke was driving Lorelai home in silence. Her eyes were closed and her hand resting on her bump.
"Just a few more months and it's our turn," Luke said quietly.
She turned to look at him and smiled, "Can we go see the house?"
Luke reached over and took her hand, "As long as you promise to be careful."
"I won't sniff the paint, I promise."
Chuckling, he took the turn to go to the house instead of his apartment.
When he pulled into the driveway she gasped, "It's so different."
"Haven't you come up at all?"
She looked at her house with the extension on the second floor still in the works.
"I've been avoiding it, I wanted to be surprised. Plus I figured it would be like walking in on a doctor performing surgery. You know, you freak out asking the doctor why there's all this blood and cuts made but in the end things are better than before. I just wanted to see the end result."
"You asked to come," he said confused. "Are you okay?"
She nodded and opened the car door, "Yeah. I want to see it."
Luke rushed to her side and held her hand. He was thrilled that in the last few weeks she was choosing to wear flat shoes, they held hands as they entered the house. There were sounds of people working, a radio playing the classic rock station, hammering, and voices talking. There were tools, tarps and various things scattered. Lorelai's eyes began to water, Luke squeezed her hand.
"Remember they're in the middle of the surgery, it will look better soon."
She chuckled, "I'm happy. I can see it, can't you?"
He couldn't help but smile at her, "What do you see?"
She let go of his hand and began describing the life she saw, she pointed to the enlarged living room area, "We'll have a Christmas tree in that corner. You'll be sitting in the most comfortable and manly armchair that I could find reading our kid a story. Rory and I will be cuddling on the couch listening to you watching the fire you made in our refurbished fireplace."
She motioned to the kitchen, "When you finally hire more help at the diner, you'll be in that kitchen every Sunday morning making us a family breakfast. All of our favourites from Luke's, right here at home."
He pulled her close and kissed her soundly, "Want to check out upstairs? You can describe what we'll do in the master suite."
"I still can't believe you are building me a suite," she looked at him with awe.
He stroked her cheek, "I can't believe you're giving me a child."
She grabbed his hand and placed it on her stomach, "Do you feel it?"
For a moment his brow furrowed, then he looked like a five-year-old given a mountain of candy. "Is that?"
"Our baby is kicking," she confirmed.
He crouched down, pressed his ear beside his hand and began to whisper, "Hey Kid! It's your Dad."
Lorelai gasped at the powerful kick she felt.
"Hi to you too," Luke laughed.
Just then, Tom came down the stairs, "Hey there! Are you guys heading upstairs?"
"In a minute," Lorelai giggled. "He just felt his first kick."
Grumpy Tom smiled and never broke his stride as he collected a few things, "You never forget that. If he's anything like I was with my wife, he'll be touching your stomach constantly now. The guys are cleaning up for the day, you should have the place to yourself in about fifteen or twenty minutes."
"Thanks Tom," Lorelai called. She looked down and Luke who was still listening to her stomach and smiling, "Come on, let's go see the rest of the progress." She tapped his shoulder and he finally rose.
He kissed her sweetly, "You're amazing."
When all the workers were gone Luke led Lorelai into the master suite and her jaw dropped.
"Luke," she whispered.
"You like it," He questioned while smiling.
She wandered around the room taking in all the changes, she ran her hand along the window frame of the new enlarged window with a bench seat. She had expected to be very territorial and involved in all the plans, but when Luke first told her some of his visions she let him run with the renovation. The last few weeks especially, she had been more focused at work, making sure Michel and the rest of the staff was comfortable running the place in her absence. She could never imagine taking a full maternity leave and cutting herself off from the Inn entirely, but she wanted to know that if needed to, she could. The fact that she and Sookie would both be new Moms had them excited and on edge. They had hired a few more people to help, Michel was moving to a more management role, and Manny was promoted in the kitchen.
She turned to Luke, who was nervously watching her reaction to their new room, "This is beautiful," she smiled at him.
Sighing with relief, Luke made his way to her and began to get excited, "So in here we obviously enlarged the window, this bench will have cushions and there should be room for a reading chair too. The closet is now a walkin and I should only need a small section, I don't have a lot of things that need to be hung up."
"Well now that Richard and Emily Gilmore like you, you'll be invited to more of their functions, so you may need a few more suits and a tux." She grinned just imagining him all GQ-ed up for her.
Luke rolled his eyes in response, "Great. But either way, the closet will be mainly yours, there's still a ton of room out here for dressers and such. I saw a great set at Mrs. Kim's but Rory mentioned you might want a more modern option, so we can go shopping to furnish this room."
She loved seeing how happy he was, "Tell me more."
"Well, that door there leads into our ensuite bathroom. Tom said they finished installing the plumbing we need and they'll be working on that tomorrow. We'll have a large vanity with two sinks, lots of storage under them, a bathtub under a skylight and then a shower big enough for two." He had wrapped his arms around her from behind and had growled the last part in her ear.
"Is there a ledge for me to help shave my legs?"
"Well, I've heard you complaining lately so I actually had them extend a few things and the ledge will now be wide enough for us to sit on. So if we need a shower but are exhausted, we can sit."
"You really are thinking of everything hu?"
"I try," he shrugged.
"What else?"
Luke smiled, resting his hands on her stomach as he continued. "Rory's room in the attic is almost done, the two bedrooms down the hall are done, we just have to pick out paint colours. And the second bathroom up here should be done by the end of the week. I would say two more weeks and we might be ready to move in."
Lorelai turned in his arms, "I'm going to miss the love nest over the diner!"
"I will too," he kissed her nose, "It's been a fun honeymoon hideaway. But this is going to be for our life. I really want to thank you for letting me take the lead here and for letting me expand the kitchen. I know it was hard for you to let go of Rory's room."
"That was all her! I told her that I would support whatever she said because I wanted her to feel like this was her house too. I think it helped that it was for YOU, I can't imagine her giving up that spot for anyone else. But it was really nice of you to keep some of the room there and make it a small office."
"Well I needed a place to do my bookkeeping and stuff. Plus I found this great leather chair that will fit by the window so she can read in there."
"I love you," she buried her head in his shoulder.
"I love you too."
