Chapter 57
Hi everyone! We're headed to Camelot in this chapter! Who's excited? Also, I know I said in a previous chapter that I would be stopping after season 6, but after seeing that finale I definitely cannot leave that out of my story, so I've decided to go into season 7 some too! I won't be writing Hanna into any parts from when they were in Hyperion Heights, but anytime they showed Storybrooke in season 7, I will be weaving Hanna into the story somehow! That is a long way off though. I still have so much more to write! I hope you all will stick with me through the end :)
Enjoy :)
As the diner quickly began to fall, Hanna's stomach did a flop. She latched onto her dad's arm even tighter, really hoping she didn't puke everywhere. They just fell and fell until there was a thud.
"Are you alright?" David said as he looked down at Hanna. He thought she looked a little pale.
Hanna took a deep breath. Now that they were safely on the ground she felt fine. "Yeah, I'm good."
David looked to his wife. "Snow, are you and Neal…"
"We're fine, Charming. This little guy slept through the whole thing," Snow smiled down at her little prince.
"We need to find Emma," Hanna said as she headed towards the door. She was determined to get to her sister and save her from whatever that darkness did to her.
"Aye, let's go." Killian walked to the door with Hanna.
Snow gave the baby to Granny and went with Charming, Regina, Robin, and Henry to find her daughter.
Emma wasn't far. They only had to walk through the trees a short ways before finding her. Hanna was relieved when she spotted Emma, but was instantly worried again when she saw a glowing heart in her hand. Hanna assumed the heart belonged to the red-haired woman standing there with Emma. Hanna knew they had gotten here just in time.
"Emma, don't!" Hanna called out to her sister.
"What? How?" Emma was very confused as to how her family had gotten here.
"It doesn't matter how," Killian told her. "Has anything ever stopped us before?"
"You don't know what's happening," Emma shook her head. "This is the only way to find Merlin. He's the only one who can stop the darkness. The only way to protect all of you." Emma just stared at the heart in her hands.
"But to stop the darkness you're going to let it consume you," Regina said.
Emma turned to Regina "You don't know that."
"We're not going to take the chance," Snow said as she held out the dagger.
Hanna shook her head. "Mom, no. You can't do that."
"This has to be her choice" Killian added.
Hanna looked up at her sister. Emma was staring at the woman. Hanna could tell she was struggling to decide what to do. The darkness in her wanted to crush that heart, but the real Emma was still in there, stopping her from doing so.
"You don't understand what's at stake," Emma said. "If I don't find Merlin, the darkness will destroy all of you."
"Emma, please. No." Killian begged.
Emma looked to Killian. "The Dark One destroys everyone near it. Look at Gold. I can't do that to my family. And to you." She looked back a the heart and started to squeeze. "She has to die."
"Emma, listen to yourself! This isn't you!" Hanna stepped closer to her sister. "We can find another way, together."
Emma looked at Hanna for a split second before focusing back on the task and squeezing the heart even tighter.
"Look at us, Swan," Killian said. "Heroes and villains together for you, because of you. And if we can over come it—if we can overcome our demons…then so can you."
"You are strong, Emma. Stronger than the darkness," Hanna added.
Emma turned around, almost as if she was looking at someone behind her. Then she turned and shoved the heart back into the woman's chest. She leaned into Killian, who wrapped his arms around her. Hanna let out a sigh of relief, thankful that her sister did the right thing. She also noticed Emma glancing back to where she just had a few seconds ago before giving the woman back her heart. Hanna wondered what she was looking at.
"Thanks, Han," Emma gave her a small smile.
"I knew you could do it," Hanna said as she wrapped her arms around her sister.
Emma returned the hug, and then walked over to her parents.
"Mom, Dad, this is too dangerous. You shouldn't have come."
"We had to," David said as he pulled her close, cradling the back of her head.
"You're our daughter," Snow told her with a smile. She gave Emma a hug as well. "Here," Snow said as she stepped back and held out the dagger. "We think you should have this."
"Take it," David encouraged Emma. "You'll be able to control yourself."
"We believe in you, Em," Hanna said with a nod.
Emma looked at the dagger and shook her head. "No."
"Emma think about it," Killian said. "If it falls into the wrong hands, what it could do—what you could do…"
Emma continued to stare at the dagger. "The fight to control my darkness has just begun. It's too much power." Emma looked to Regina. "Someone needs to watch me." Emma took the dagger and held it out to Regina.
"Are you serious?" Regina asked as she took the dagger from Emma.
"I saved you. Now save me," Emma told her. "And if you can't save me, do what no one else will willingly do. You're the only one who will get past their feelings and do what is necessary—destroy me."
"Emma, no." Hanna shook her head.
"It won't come to that," Henry told her
Emma turned to the kids and could see the worry in their eyes. "It's okay you guys." She pulled them close to reassure them that everything would be just fine, even though she really didn't believe that herself. "So you guys gonna tell me how you all got here?"
"Well, it might me be easier to show you," Killian said as he reached out for Emma's hand. Emma took his hand and followed everyone back through the trees.
"You brought Granny's…" Emma said when she saw the familiar place from home.
"Back up generator's working, but the fryers are shot," Granny said as she came through the door.
"…and Granny" Emma continued.
"Terrible news! No onion rings!" Leroy shouted.
"And Leroy too!" Hanna said with a grin.
"There's no shortage of people who want to help you." Snow told Emma just as Belle and Doc also came out of the diner.
Hanna noticed the look on Emma's face change. "Emma, what is it?" Hanna watched Emma turn and look to where they had just come from. Hanna could hear horses.
"What now?" Leroy asked just as a group of knights began riding towards them.
"Stand back." Emma stood protectively in front of them. "Who are you and what do you want?"
"I'm King Arthur of Camelot. We've come to find you."
"Find us?" Killian asked.
"My lord, they think their arrival is a surprise," one of the knights said to King Arthur.
"You were expecting us?" Snow asked.
"It was Merlin," Arthur told them. "He prophesied your coming here a long time ago."
They questioned Arthur about Merlin, having been told he was missing. Arthur confirmed what they had been told, but also let them know that Merlin would not be missing for much longer because according to his prophecy, they were destined to reunite him. King Arthur asked them to follow him back to Camelot, and they agreed.
They could hear trumpets begin to play as they walked towards the castle. As they crossed the bridge and got closer, the golden doors opened allowing them to walk through.
"Wow!" Hanna and Henry said at the same time as they looked around, stunned by the beauty of this place.
"Wow is right," David agreed.
"I'm so not dressed for this," Snow said.
The trumpets stopped and someone called out "His royal highness, King Arthur."
King Arthur stepped forward and introduced his wife Guinevere.
"Your majesty," Snow said as she began to bow.
Hanna noticed everyone else was bowing too. Hanna looked at Henry, who shrugged his shoulders at her. Apparently they were suppose to bow. So, the kids just did as the adults did and bowed as Guinevere walked towards them.
Guinevere and Arthur told them that they have prepared a ball for tonight in honor of their arrival. Hanna rolled her eyes when they mentioned the ball. Hanna hated going to balls. She really didn't think they had time to waste on a stupid ball anyway. They needed to find Merlin so they could save Emma. After seeing Emma almost crush a heart, Hanna knew that darkness might get the best of Emma quicker than Hanna thought. They had to find Merlin soon so they could get that darkness out of her.
"Your majesty," Killian said. "When are we going to start our quest to find Merlin?"
"Find him? We don't need to find him," Arthur said. "We know exactly where he is."
"Well why didn't he just say so in the first place," Hanna whispered to Henry as they followed Arthur to a very tall tree that stood in the courtyard.
"So, the most powerful sorcerer in all the realms is stuck inside a bloody tree?" Killian asked.
"I said the same exact thing as I stood there," Arthur told him. He continued to explain that Merlin's prophecy said there is a savior amongst them who will be able to free Merlin from his prison. "Now, which one of you would that be?" Arthur asked as he looked around at the group.
No one said anything for a few seconds. Obviously the prophecy was talking about Emma, but Hanna knew Emma couldn't use magic right now. Her magic would be dark magic, and she couldn't let the darkness get even more of a hold on her. Hanna noticed Emma start to speak, but Regina quickly interrupted her.
"I am the savior," Regina told Arthur. "I'm the one who's going to free Merlin from this tree, and then we can take care of the Dark One and all go home. Hanna could see Regina holding the dagger behind her coat. She was controlling Emma. Hanna looked over at her sister and could tell she didn't like being controlled by that thing.
"She did not like that," Hanna whispered to Regina as they walked back into the castle.
"What?" Regina asked.
"You using that against her," Hanna said as she nodded towards Regina's jacket.
"I had to Hanna. We can't let Emma…"
"I know. You did the right thing. We can't let her use magic. I'm just saying, Emma was not very happy about it," Hanna said with a shrug.
"Yes, well, she gave me this for a reason, so she's just going to have to trust that I know what I'm doing."
They went into the castle where King Arthur showed them all to their bed chambers and left them to prepare for this evenings festivities.
Hanna flopped herself down onto the bed and watched as her mom fixed Emma's hair. "Mom, do I really have to go to this ball?"
"Yes Hanna."
"You know that tornado really did a number on my stomach. I think I might be sick." Hanna put her hands on her stomach and looked over at her mom.
Snow turned and raised her eyebrows at her youngest daughter, knowing full well she felt just fine. "Go put on the dress that's in the closet, please."
"You know, if she doesn't feel well. I could just stay up here with her," Emma said with a shrug.
"Girls, you are both going to this ball tonight," Snow told them.
"Fine," they both sighed at the same time.
Hanna rolled off of the bed and went to the closet. She closed her eyes, afraid to see what kind of gown awaited her. She opened the door and then peeked open her eyes to find a very beautiful purple dress hanging up for her. Hanna loved purple! She smiled, thankful that the dress wasn't pink.
Snow was just about finished with Emma's hair. She was carefully placing the crown of flowers onto her head as Hanna came back from changing and walked up behind them. "I remember my first ball," Snow said with a smile. "I was eight years old, and my mother said I was finally old enough to go. It was magical—all of the lights, the music. And I remember thinking, I can't wait to someday share all of this with a daughter of my own."
Emma reached her hand up and held onto her mom's. "I'm glad I get to share it with you too, Mom."
"I'm so thankful I get to share it with both of my girls." Snow gave Hanna a wink through the mirror. She and Hanna have had a moment like this before, but now Snow got the chance do this with both of them.
Hanna walked up to her mom and wrapped her arms around her. "I guess this is kind of fun." Hanna gave her sister a smile. "You look beautiful Emma."
Emma smiled back. "You too, Han. "Well…almost," Emma stood to give her sister her seat. "Here, it's your turn. Mom has got a lot of work to do with that hair of yours."
"Yes young lady, you've left me with a lot of curls to tame," Snow teased.
Hanna just rolled her eyes and sat down at the vanity. "Yeah well I'd like to see you try to control these curls after being sucked through a vortex of green smoke."
"Challenge accepted, princess," Snow said with a grin as she started in on Hanna's hair.
And it wasn't long before Snow had Hanna's hair looking just as gorgeous as her sister's. She even had some flowers to put in Hanna's hair as well. As her girls stood in front of her, Snow couldn't help the tears that fell from her eyes. She just couldn't believe how beautiful they both looked.
"I have to go get your father," Snow said as she hurried through to the conjoining room to get her husband, who was putting the baby to sleep.
"Wow," David said when he saw his daughters. Emma and Hanna smiled as he took ahold of each of their hands and twirled them around. "You two are definitely ready for a ball."
"Just like a princess, Dad?" Hanna asked with a smile.
"Just like a princess, kiddo," David said with a nod. He smiled and pulled his girls close, cradling the back of their heads. "The most beautiful princesses at the ball."
Emma went to find Killian, and Hanna went through to the other room with her mom and dad to check on the baby and fill the babysitter in on everything he needed to know.
"Now, if he gets fussy, he probably just needs to be changed," Snow told Doc as she made sure Neal was all snuggled in his cradle.
"Are you sure you don't want us to get Granny?" David asked him.
Doc shook his head. "If I go to the ball, I'll just get stuck being Grumpy's wingman."
"I can watch him," Regina said as she poked her head into the room. "I'm not going."
Snow, David, and Hanna followed Regina back through to the other room.
"But you have to," Snow told her. "Everyone's expecting you."
"I should be figuring out how to free Merlin," Regina said, "not fox-trotting my away across club medieval."
"If Regina doesn't have to go, then I'm not going." Hanna told her mom.
Snow gave Hanna a look. "You're going." She turned back to her stepmother. "Regina…"
"What?" Regina asked.
"The truth."
"I can't go, alright?" Regina said with a shrug. "I can't."
"Because why?" Snow pushed.
"Because…" Regina answered, clearly annoyed her stepdaughter wouldn't just drop this.
Snow sighed and gave her a look.
"Because I don't know how to dance," Regina finally admitted.
"Well, that can't be possible," Snow told her. "You and I went to dozens of balls together."
"Where your father was more interested in dancing with his precious daughter than his wife."
"I doubt Robin Hood will mind if you step on a few toes," Hanna said.
"This isn't about Robin, is it?" Snow asked.
"People are expecting a savior tonight, not an ex-evil queen. How will they ever believe I can free Merlin if I can't even convince them I know how to dance?"
Snow looked at her husband, then back to Regina. "You can if we teach you."
Regina shook her head. "No."
David pointed to the music box sitting on the table. "Hanna."
Hanna smiled and went to retrieve the box. "He's a great teacher, Regina!" Hanna gave the knob on the music box a few twists and opened the lid to let the music start playing.
"Your majesty," David said as he bowed to Regina and held out his hand for her.
Snow put her hand out for Charming to stop. "Wait, sorry. The first thing my mother taught me about dancing—you have to learn to move in a dress, not a sensible pantsuit."
Regina looked down at her outfit and rolled her eyes "Fine." She waved her hands. The purple smoke came and went, revealing new outfit…a outfit that more resembled what the Evil Queen might wear.
They all just gave her a look.
"Seriously, Regina?" Hanna said with a raise of her eyebrows.
"What?" Regina asked, thinking her dress was just fine.
"It's a little…scary." David told her.
Regina looked like she was about to lunge at him, and Snow quickly held up her hand. "What he means is if you want people to see you as the savior, maybe you should go for something a little less evil?"
Regina thought for a moment and waved her hands once more. The purple smoke disappeared, leaving Regina wearing a beautiful pale pink dress instead.
"Now that is perfect," Snow told her.
Hanna gave Regina a smile. "And it even matches your necklace."
Hanna watched her dad step forward and take Regina's hands in his. She stepped on his toes only once, and he had her dancing around the room in no time. She was going to be more than ready for this ball. She would have everyone in Camelot believing she was the savior.
"Mom, do we really have to do this?" Hanna asked as they stood in the corridors waiting to be presented to a ballroom full of people. "Why can't I just go stand down there with Henry?" Hanna could see Henry with her dad, Killian, and Robin waiting at the bottom of the staircase.
"Because it's tradition, Hanna. Now come on," Snow started walking towards the staircase and motioned for Hanna to come too.
Hanna sighed, but followed her mom and sister. She stopped for a second and looked back at Regina, noticing that she looked nervous about having to come out alone. Hanna reached out and squeezed her hand. "You're going to be great, Regina."
Regina gave her a smile. "Thank you. Now, you better go." Regina nodded towards Snow and Emma who were waiting at the top of the stairs for Hanna.
"Crap," Hanna whispered as she quickly went to them. She knew they couldn't be presented until she was there too. She was holding up the whole thing. "Sorry," Hanna winced as she stood beside her mom.
"Presenting Lady Emma, Lady Hanna, and Lady Mary Margaret.," the man called out.
They took each others hands and walked down the stairs. Henry greeted Hanna at the bottom. He bowed, while she had to curtsy. "I feel so stupid doing this," Hanna whispered to him.
"You do look very pretty, though." Henry whispered back.
Hanna rolled her eyes. "Thanks, Henry."
They walked off to the side and watched Regina take her turn.
"Presenting the Savior." The whole room clapped as Regina came down the stairs.
Hanna and Henry just stood off to the side as everyone began to dance.
"Are there any snacks around here?" Hanna asked Henry.
Henry shrugged. "Let's go look." He was hungry too.
As they munched on a few snacks, Hanna noticed Henry couldn't keep his eyes off of a girl across the room. "Who you lookin at there, Henry?" Hanna said, giving him a nudge.
Henry quickly shook his head. "No one." But his eyes glanced right back to the girl.
"She's very cute. Want me to wave her over here," Hanna said as she started to raise her arm.
"Stop it." Henry quickly grabbed her arm and pulled it down.
Hanna grinned. "Aw come on. Don't be shy. Let's go talk to her." Hanna started walking towards the girl.
Henry took ahold of her arm again. "Hanna don't"
"What are you kids up to?" David asked them.
"Hi Dad!" Hanna turned and gave him a smile. "Henry and I were just going over there to…"
"Nothing," Henry interrupted. "We weren't going to do anything."
"You know you could just walk over there and introduce yourself," David said as he nodded towards the girl.
Hanna realized her dad noticed Henry staring at the girl as well. "I'll just leave you two to it then." Hanna knew he would be able to convince Henry to go talk to the girl. She was thirsty anyway after eating the food and wanted to find something to drink.
Once Hanna found herself a drink, she looked back around to see if Henry had mustered up the confidence to introduce himself. She spotted him and saw that he had pulled out his iPod and was listening to it with the girl. "Way to go, Henry." Hanna was impressed. That was a smooth move. She knew the girl had probably never seen anything like that before.
Just as Hanna took a big gulp of her drink, she felt someone tap her on the shoulder. She jumped and covered her mouth, afraid she might spit out her drink everywhere. She looked up and saw a boy standing beside her. She carefully swallowed her drink and put her hand down.
"Would you like to dance with me?" the boy asked.
"Uh…" Hanna didn't know what to say. She never danced with anyone besides her dad before. What if she was horrible? What if she stepped on his toes?
The boy shook his head. "It's okay if you don't want to. I'll just, uh…go," he turned to walk away.
Hanna could tell he seemed nervous. "Wait," she called out to him. He turned back around and looked at her with a hopeful smile. Hanna closed her eyes and took a deep breath, convincing herself she could do this. She looked back up at him with a smile. "I'd love to dance with you."
He took Hanna's hand in his and led her to the dance floor. Hanna was surprised that she was actually doing this. They were dancing along with everyone else, and she hadn't even stepped on his toes once.
"You came with that group from the other realm, didn't you?" he asked her as they continued to dance.
Hanna nodded. "Yeah, we did."
"That's fascinating," the boy said, his eyes wide with wonder. "What's it like over there?"
"Uh…" Hanna wasn't sure how to describe it in a way he'd understand. "Very, very different."
"Do you have balls like this where you're from?"
Hanna just shook her head.
"You're lucky. We have one of these practically every night in Camelot."
"So you don't like them very much?"
He shrugged. "Not really…at least not until tonight," he told her with a smile.
Hanna felt her cheeks turning red as she smiled back. "My name is Hanna by the way."
"Nice to meet you, Hanna. My name is…"
"May I cut in?" David asked as he came up next to his daughter.
"Oh, of course," the boy said nervously as he stepped aside. "I'll, uh, see you around, Hanna."
Hanna watched as her new friend walked away. She felt her dad take her hands in his and continue to dance. "Dad…" Hanna looked up at him and furrowed her eyebrows.
"What?" David said with a shrug. "You promised me a dance."
"Couldn't you have waited until the next one?" Hanna complained. "He didn't even get to tell me his name."
"Well, I…" David started to say when he heard commotion coming from over where Regina was.
Hanna noticed the look on her dad's face and turned to see what was happening. She saw Robin tackle the man who had been dancing with Regina to the ground. Hanna felt her dad let go of her hands.
"Stay here," he told her before running over to help.
Hanna looked around and spotted her sister. Hanna noticed she was lifting her hands, about to use magic. "No, she can't," Hanna whispered to herself. Killian quickly grabbed Emma's hands to stop her though, for which Hanna was grateful. There was no way she would have made it to her sister in time. Hanna looked back to her dad, who had just pulled a sword from one of the knights. He was running towards Robin and the man he had tackled. "Dad!" Hanna shouted as she tried to make her way towards him.
"Hanna, stay here," Snow said as she quickly stood beside her daughter.
Hanna listened to what her mom told her and watched as her dad knocked the sword from the man's hand and plunged his sword through the man's chest. Hanna turned and covered her face with her hands. She felt her mom wrap her arms around her.
In the midst of all the commotion, Robin was stabbed with sword the man was holding. They had to take him to another room. Regina was going to try and heal him.
Snow stopped Hanna before she could come in. "Go back to our room."
"No, Mom," Hanna shook her head. "I want to stay."
"Hanna, just go. Now." Snow told her firmly.
Hanna nodded and started to back away. She watched as her mom went into the room and shut the door. Hanna stopped. She wasn't going back to the room. She was going to wait right here. She walked close to the door, but she couldn't hear a thing. She walked down the hallway a bit and just paced, waiting for somebody to come out. She looked up when she heard Emma's voice.
"No. I just did what had to be done."
Hanna walked closer to her sister and saw that there was no one else there with her. "Emma…who are you talking to?" Hanna asked.
"No, one," Emma told her.
Hanna walked up to her sister, knowing she was lying. She looked down and saw the skin on Emma's hand had changed. It was sparkling just like Rumplestiltskin's did when he was the Dark One. "Emma what's happening?"
"Hanna. It's nothing. I have to go." Emma said in a very eerily calm voice.
"But Emma…" Hanna watched as her sister just walked away. Hanna turned to where Emma had been looking when she was talking. There was no one there, but Hanna knew Emma was definitely talking to someone. She remembered earlier today that Emma kept glancing back, as if she was seeing something…or someone. Hanna was scared for her sister. What was that darkness doing to her?
