Chapter 66
Phew, it's starting to get a little draining writing so much sad/angsty stuff and we all know there is more to come! I miss writing happy Charming family moments. It is kinda hard to fit those moments in during this part of the show though. Hopefully, once we're into season 6, I can squeeze more of that into this main story. If anyone has any light-hearted family ideas for my one-shot series please let me know! (I'll write any ideas you have though, even they're not light-hearted lol)
Anyway, let's head back to Storybrooke and see how everyone is going to react to being taken to the Underworld…or in Hanna's case being left behind! Enjoy :)
"Hanna. Hanna…" Snow put her hands on either side of her daughters face to get her to focus. "Hanna, look at me."
"Huh?" Hanna said as she looked into her mother's eyes. She knew her mom had just tried to tell her something, but Hanna couldn't focus on what she was saying. She was still trying to wrap her head around everything.
"Are you alright?" Snow asked.
Hanna nodded. "What were you trying to tell me?"
"I said we're going to go to Regina's vault to see if she has something to stop this," Snow told her again.
"Oh…okay." Hanna said. She went with her mom and dad to pick up Neal from Granny's, then go to the vault.
"Gold has to be missing something right?" Henry asked as he looked through one of Regina's books.
The adults in the room just looked at each other, but said nothing.
"Maybe Gold's right," Snow said with a sigh. "Maybe this is a fight we can't win."
"Mom," Emma looked up and walked over to her. "You're Snow White. You don't know how to give up. Hope is in your blood."
"And I do hope, Emma. But I don't want to spend what could be my last moments with my nose in a book. I want to make the most of the moments with my family."
Hanna couldn't believe what her mom was saying. Was this really happening? Did Hanna only have moments left with the people she loved? This couldn't be. There had to be a way. She looked to Emma, hoping she would have a solution. She was still the Dark One. There had to be something. But all could see was a look of despair and the tears in her eyes. Hanna could feel tears in her own eyes when she realized this was it.
"Dinner at Granny's," Henry said interrupting her thoughts. "That's what we should do."
David agreed. "Yeah. Dinner at Granny's. That's a great idea."
"What about Neal?" Emma asked as she looked to the baby in her mother's arms. "He'll be left here all alone."
"He won't be alone, Emma," Snow told her with a small smile. "He'll have you. He'll have both of you." Snow looked to Hanna too.
Hanna nodded and gave a small smile to her baby brother. She loved him so much and would be there for him when their parents were gone.
"I will not give up on my family," Emma said as tears began to fall.
Snow turned and gave the baby to Charming, then turned back to Emma. "We are almost out of time. And time is what's most important. Time with those we love." Snow took Emma's head in her hands and kissed her forehead. She looked back at her, tears filling her eyes. "I know you won't stop trying. And I hope you succeed, but promise me you'll come meet us at Granny's. Come say goodbye."
"I promise," Emma told her.
Snow pulled Emma into her arms and held her tightly. "I love you, Emma."
"I love you, too," Emma said as she wrapped her arms around her.
Snow stood back and gave Emma a small smile. She then turned to Hanna.
"Mom…" Hanna looked up at her mother as the tears streamed down her face.
"Let's go, sweetie." Snow said as she put her arm around her and started to lead her out of the vault.
"Wait…" Hanna turned and walked back towards her sister. "Emma, are you sure there isn't something we can…"
Emma put her hands on Hanna's shoulders. "Han, just go to Granny's, okay?"
"But…"
"Hanna please…"
Hanna didn't want to leave her sister. She knew Emma played her these last few days and she wasn't any help at all with her plans, but she still wanted to be there for her. She wanted to help her, but she would do what Emma asked. Maybe if she had done that from the start they wouldn't be in this mess right now. "You're gonna come too though, right?"
"Yeah I'll come."
Hanna scanned Emma's face for any hint that she was lying, but couldn't find any. She gave her sister a nod and left with her parents.
When they got to Granny's they all ordered their favorite foods. Snow and David got in as much snuggle time with Neal as they could. Hanna was trying to soak up these last few moments with the people she loved. She joked around with Henry and reminisced on some favorite memories with him and her parents.
After awhile though, it was all starting to become too much. Hanna needed some time alone to process all of this. She got up from the table and went through to the to the bed and breakfast side of Granny's. She sat down on one of the couches in the lounge and started to think. She started to really think about what it would be like being here in Storybrooke while almost everyone else she loved would be gone.
She thought about Henry…her best friend. They had been through so much together. Going through school together during the curse. Getting Emma to stay in town. Finally breaking the curse and bringing everyone together. All of the adventures they'd had since then…there were so many memories that Hanna would hold on to. Hanna knew she let him down since they came back from Camelot. She knew he forgave her, but she still felt like she needed time to make it up to him. She had none left though.
Then there was Regina…a few years ago Hanna would never have thought she'd miss the Mayor of Storybrooke, but so much has changed. Regina changed. Hanna watched her become a different version of herself. She was family now. Hanna would miss her magic lessons. She had learned so much from her, but now she would be gone too. Robin, the dwarves, even Mr. Gold. Hanna would miss them all.
Hanna knew who she was going to miss the most though. Her parents. She didn't know what she was going to do without them. A curse had separated Hanna from part of her family before, but her parents were there with her. They made that year in the Enchanted Forest bearable. They always filled her with hope, pulled her from her nightmares, and gave her all the comfort she needed. And in just a few hours they were going to be gone. They were all going to be gone. Hanna pulled her knees to chest and buried her head in her arms as the tears began to fall.
After a few minutes, Hanna felt someone sit down beside her. She lifted her head and saw her dad. She could see the tears filling his eyes. "Daddy…"
"I know kiddo, I know…" David wrapped his arms around his little girl and pulled her close.
Hanna leaned into him and continued to cry. What would she do without him to keep her safe?
"You're going to be okay," he told her. "You're going to have your sister, your brother, Granny…you'll have so many people that love you."
Hanna looked up at him. "But I won't have you."
David gave her a small smile. "You can never lose me, Hanna. Even if you can't see me. I will always be with you."
"But what if I have nightmares?"
David sighed and wiped the tears from her eyes. "Then your sister will be there for you."
"But it won't be the same."
"I know, but Emma will make sure you're okay. I promise."
Hanna nodded her head and leaned back into him.
David kissed the top of her head. "I love you princess."
"I love you too."
"Hey you two," Snow said quietly as she sat down on the other side of Hanna.
Hanna lifted her head. She turned to her mom.
Snow reached out her arms for her daughter. "Come here."
Hanna leaned into her mom's embrace.
"Momma, I don't want you to go."
"I don't want to go either, baby." Snow held Hanna tighter as tears fell down her cheeks. "You and Emma…you two will find a way to bring us back."
"You really think so?"
"I do," Snow said as she kissed the top of Hanna's head.
"Our family always finds each other," David told her.
Hanna sat up and wiped a few tears from her eyes.
"Remember to always hold onto that hope Hanna," Snow reached out and held her hand in her own. "Hope is a very powerful thing."
Hanna nodded her head.
"Help Emma take care of your brother for us too, okay?" Snow said, wiping a few tears from her own cheeks. "He's going to need you."
"Besides your mom and me, you're the only one who knows his special bedtime song," David told her.
"And you know that he sleeps best if you put his blanket in the dryer for ten minutes before rocking him to sleep," Snow added.
"He does like his warm blanket," Hanna said with a small smile. "I don't know how good of a singer I am, but I'll try. Emma and I will take care of him. I…I promise."
Snow pulled her into her arms again. "We know you will."
"You're the best big sister," David said as he wrapped his arms around his girls and held them close.
Hanna just sat and enjoyed this moment with her mom and dad. She didn't know if or when she would see them again. She was trying to soak in as much of this as she could.
After awhile, Hanna sat up again. "Should we go back now?" She didn't want this moment to end, but knew they should probably get back to Henry and Neal. She also hoped Emma would be here soon too. She did promise she would come.
"Yeah I suppose we should," David said.
"Let's go," Snow said as she stood and reached her hand out for Hanna's.
Hanna stood from the couch and took her mom's hand. She wiped the last few tears from her eyes and made her way back towards the diner. She spotted Henry sitting with Neal, making funny faces at him. Hanna watched as Neal gave him the biggest smiles in return. Hanna was about to walk back to the table and join them when she saw a letter sitting on the jukebox. She saw "For My Family" written on the outside of the envelope. She recognized Emma's handwriting.
Hanna quickly opened the letter. She skimmed the words written inside. Emma was going to sacrifice herself for all of them. "Mom, Dad…"
"What is it?"
"What's wrong?"
"It's from Emma," Hanna said as she held out the letter to them.
They quickly read the letter.
"We've got to stop her," David said as they quickly made their way to the front of the diner.
They were stopped by three hooded figures. It was the Dark Ones. Hanna noticed the one in the middle was a woman. The first Dark One was a woman. Merlin's true love. Nimue. This had to be her.
She started to speak. "You don't have to worry. Captain Hook's already seen to that. Which means there's no way to stop your trip to the Underworld." She reached out her hand.
Hanna watched as her parents and Henry grasped the marks on their wrists and cried out in pain. "What are you doing to them?" Hanna saw the marks begin to glow. They became so bright she couldn't even see anything anymore. When she could see again, they were all gone.
Hanna started to panic. She didn't know where they were. Had they been taken to the Underworld already? Was it too late? Did the Dark Ones succeed? Hanna didn't know. She didn't know what to do. She was pulled from her thoughts when Neal started to cry.
Hanna ran over to him. "Hey, it's okay buddy." Hanna pulled him from his carseat and held him close. "Shhh…it's going to be okay. We're going to fix his, Neal. I promise." She bounced him up and down trying to get his crying to stop. She was trying to keep herself from crying too. She had to be strong. She had to figure a way out of this. "Think, Hanna. Think." She took a few deep breaths and remembered Regina saying that the fairies were watching Roland and Zelena's baby. Hanna could take Neal there and try to find the rest of their family.
Hanna placed Neal back into his carseat. He started to fuss a little, but Hanna quickly put his pacifier in his mouth. Hanna let out a sigh of relief when he calmed down. She grabbed the carseat, slung his diaper bag over her shoulder, and waved her hand to take her to the convent. When she didn't go anywhere Hanna remembered the cuff.
"Ugh this stupid thing…" She quickly made her way out of Granny's and ran as fast as she could to find the fairies.
"Hanna, what's going on?" Blue asked.
Hanna stopped for a second to catch her breath. "My parents…Emma…I have to find them. Can you watch him?"
"Of course."
"I need you to take this off of me too." Hanna held up the wrist with the cuff.
Blue hesitated for a moment.
"Blue, please!" Hanna begged. "I don't have time! I need to get to Emma!"
Blue nodded. "Alright." She waved her hand, removing the cuff. "Be safe."
"Thanks. I will." Hanna waved her hand and sent herself to her sister.
"No! You are not taking the people I love." Hanna heard Emma say once she appeared to her.
Hanna watched as Nimue held up her hand and began choking Emma. "I might not be able to kill you, but I can stop you from interfering."
Emma reached to her throat and gasped for air. Hanna couldn't just stand there and watch. She pushed her hands out in front of her and blasted as much magic as she could towards Nimue. Hanna's magic just passed through her though…doing nothing.
Hanna's eyes went wide as Nimue looked right at her. She used her other hand to send Hanna flying backwards. Hanna hit the ground with a thud, knocking the wind out of her.
"Hanna, are you alright?" David said as he pulled her up from the ground.
"I'm…okay…" Hanna said as she tried to catch her breath.
"Are you sure?" Snow asked checking her over for injuries.
"I'm fine, Mom."
"Your brother?" David asked.
"He's fine. I took him to Blue," Hanna told him as she walked back to where Emma was.
Emma looked to Killian, her eyes pleading for him to help her.
Hanna looked towards Killian too. She could tell by the look on his face he was torn. She knew the darkness inside him was working hard, convincing him to do what they wanted. To snuff out all of the light, drag the people they marked to the Underworld, and allow them to return to the land of the living. Hanna could also see the part of him that wanted to do what was right. She could see the pain in his eyes as he watched Emma struggle to breath. He still loved her.
"Killian, please!" Hanna begged. "There's still good in you! You can still stop all of this." Hanna wasn't sure how he was going to stop all of this, but he had the power of a Dark One, surely he knew of something.
"That's enough!" he said as he turned to Nimue.
"What do you think you're doing?" she asked him.
"Being the man I want to be."
"You can't stop us."
"Yes, I can," Killian said as he held up Excalibur in front of him. The sword began to pull the darkness from all of the Dark Ones. They all disappeared and Excalibur now held all of their dark magic.
"Killian, you can't do this," Emma told him.
"We both know there's no other way, love. We have to hurry. The darkness won't stay trapped in Excalibur much longer. Take it." He turned towards Emma and held out the sword.
Emma shook her head. "No!"
"You have to help me, Swan. Take it."
"I can't. It should be me," Emma said as tears began to fill her eyes.
"Your family needs you," he told her. "If anyone deserves to go to the Underworld it's me. You were right. I was weak. So let me make up for it now by being strong."
The tears streamed down Emma's face. "I don't want to lose you."
"And I don't want to lose you, but you have to let me go. Let me die a hero. That's the man I want you to remember, please."
Hanna watched as her sister stepped forward and reach out for the sword. Was this really how it was all going to end? When Hanna begged for Killian's help, she didn't think he would have to die. She didn't think her sister was going to have to kill the man she loved. She thought maybe there could be another way. Hanna could tell by the despair on her sister's face that there wasn't. Emma took the sword from Killian's hand. She kissed him one last time before stepping back and plunging the sword through his heart. A bright light shined out and Emma was back to her normal self again. Excalibur disintegrated and Killian's wound from Camelot reappeared as he fell into Emma's arms.
"No! No!" Emma cried out in despair as she lowered Killian to the ground. Emma held onto him and continued to cry.
Hanna covered her face with her hands. She couldn't take the sound of her sister's cries. They were breaking her heart. She felt her parents wrap their arms around her. She leaned into them and began to cry. Emma had already lost so much in this life, and now she had to watch the man she loved die. Everything she had done was to save him, and now he was gone.
After a few minutes, an ambulance showed up to take Killian's body away. Hanna held onto her parents and watched as the men loaded him onto the gurney and covered him with a sheet. Hanna watched her sister cling tightly to Killian's hand, not wanting to let him go.
Hanna felt her parents release their grip on her and walk over to Emma.
"Come on sweetie," Snow said as she pulled Emma's hands away.
"You have to let him go, Em." David said.
Snow and David were finally able to release Emma's grip and Snow held her back as they took Killian away.
Snow took Emma's face into her hands. "I'm sorry baby," she said as she pulled Emma into her arms as she continued to cry.
David pulled them close, trying to give Emma the comfort she needed. He and Snow both knew nothing they could do or say would make her feel better in this moment, so they just held tightly to her.
Hanna felt the tears begin to fall down her face again. She had never seen her sister like this before. Emma was a complete mess. Hanna just watched as she sobbed in their parents arms. Hanna didn't know what to do. She wanted to stop her sister's cries more than anything. She wanted to help her. She wanted to make her pain go away. Hanna felt hopeless though. There was nothing she could do for her.
Hanna felt an arm wrap around her and looked up to see Regina. Hanna turned and wrapped her arms around her, letting out all of the emotions she was feeling. She tried to hold it in, but she just couldn't anymore.
Regina held onto her tightly as she cried. "It's going to be okay, Hanna."
Hanna shook her head and looked up. "But Emma, she…"
Regina looked down at Hanna's tear stained cheeks. "Your sister is strong. She will get through this."
"You don't know that," Hanna said with a sniffle.
"I do know that."
"How?"
"Because we're going to be there for her," Regina said as she took Hanna's head in her hands and wiped a few tears from her cheeks. "We're all going to be there for her…for whatever she needs. We'll help her through this."
Hanna nodded her head. "Okay."
Regina gave Hanna a smile. "Come on, let's go."
Hanna walked with Regina over to where her parents were still consoling Emma. Her mom and dad were still holding onto her as she cried for the man she loved.
Snow looked up as Regina and Hanna approached her. She could see Hanna's tear stained cheeks. She felt guilty for leaving Hanna to comfort Emma, but she was thankful Regina was there for her. Both of her daughters were a mess. They both had been through so much these last several weeks. Being the Dark One took a toll on Emma. Hanna went through so much trying to help Emma, while keeping so many secrets. Emma just lost the love of her life after trying for so long to save him. Hanna had to witness it all. Her babies were in so much pain and Snow didn't know what to do.
Snow looked up at her step mother. She needed her help. "Regina, I need to get them home."
Regina nodded her head and waved her hand, bringing them all back to the loft.
