The waiting room was deathly silent considering the number of firefighters currently sat there waiting for news of Shay. Boden had gone to see how Mills was doing,a broken leg and a severe concussion,he'd been lucky it could have been so much worse for him. He left him with his mom and sister, they were glaring at him as he left and in all honesty he felt he deserved it. He paused before re-entering the waiting room, just a moment while he took a breath the pain of having his people hurt, possibly dying never got easier nor should it. He was their leader if he sends them into danger the least he can do is remember each and everyone,he took his breath and stepped back into the waiting room. Casey sat with his arm round Dawson's shoulders he knew there was something more wrong with Dawson,he'd seen her upset but there was something else on her mind. He closed his eyes and remembered Shay finding out Dawson's ring size for him and he smiled, Shay was one of the worst people he knew at keeping secrets but she'd kept that one. He and Shay may not have been as close friends with Shay as Severide and Dawson were but he still felt like he'd been stabbed in the heart. Herrmann sat there holding back tears that if they got the news he was expecting would force themselves out no matter what. If Shay died he didn't know if the firehouse would ever truly recover, she was the heartbeat of the firehouse. Then he remembered her first day when she'd dropped her stuff on her new bunk stripped bare ass nude and gone and walked to the showers. He can still remember how Cruz and Otis had stood there open mouthed, he knew Boden had had a word with her about that but a few months later Herrmann had asked her why she did it. "Instead of wondering, they now know what I look like naked so we can all get on with our lives". He still laughed about it occasionally. Cruz actually was one of the few standing, at times Shay had been one of those to join him and Otis in pranking the firehouse he couldn't imagine not hearing her laughter again as another prank back fired on Otis. Otis sat going over in his head the time that Shay had broken down crying on him and how she had spiraled after that, wondering what he could have done differently and vowed to himself that if Shay made it he'd be a better friend to her. Dawson felt so many things, guilt remorse and sorrow were just a few. After Darryl had killed himself she had done everything she could to absolve herself of any blame and shifted it all on to Shay and Shay spiraled. Yes they'd made up and moved on but sometimes she felt the closeness they'd had wasn't quite the same anymore. She remembered after the explosion and seeing Shay unmoving with a trail of crimson running from her head wound her blond hair natted with it and she froze momentarily the shock at what she was seeing and the thought occurred to her "that could have been me" then all of a sudden she kicked into gear and her training took over but that thought would haunt her for as long as she lived. Severide was just staring at the doors that he knew the Doctor would come out of when they had news. The others had all cleaned themselves up as best the could but Severide refused to move all that mattered was Shay the most helpful gad done was shrug of his coat but even that was done without any thought. It was actually Donna the chiefs knew wife who when she got there had grabbed a damp clothe and done her best to clean him up. He was practically catatonic as he waited,he'd do anything for her if she would just be okay. In his head he was planning on how to get the funds together for for another round of artificial Insemination or he'd go with Shay's plan B if that's what she wanted. He just needed her to survive and he'd do anything. The hours had passed and eventually Boden had sent the bulk of his people home and had told them that as soon as he knew anything he'd let them know. Casey had tried to get Dawson to go home with him and rest but she had sworn at him and refused to move. As for Severide,Boden hadn't even bothered to suggest it, there was no way he was going anywhere. The doors opened and the 4 of them stood up as Will Halstead stepped in.
