A\N: This is my third Away oneshot and I'm so in love with this couple and this show! I wish it was renewed for a season 2, Josh Charles was perfect as Matt Logan. Hell he's perfect in everything he's been in, much like Micheal Weatherly and Mark Harmon!
I hope you are having a good week so far, and enjoy this Away oneshot, Angels.
Emma Green wakes up with her eyes searching every inch of her surroundings, her breath coming out in gasps. She slips out of her husband's arms and out of the warm bed dressed only in his t-shirt she grabbed up off the floor before she fell asleep only-she looks at the time on her phone- an hour and a half ago, she leaves their bedroom and walks downstairs after throwing a look over her shoulder at her husband who is still sleeping. She thought he'd be awake at the slightest noise she made in her sleep, like he had been all the other times she had nightmares after coming home from missions.
God, she thinks with a smirk directed at her sleeping husband. I must've really worn him out tonight.
She checks on her 18 year old daughter who is sleeping soundly before she pads silently into the kitchen.
It's dark in their kitchen, not even the moon or the streetlights are bright enough to send in a little bit of their light so she flips on the big light, squinting when it burns her eyes for a few seconds. She walks over to the sink, grabs a cup from the draining board, and makes herself a cup of coffee.
She had been told by her therapist that she would have nightmares upon her return to Earth that were going to be unlike any ones she'd had after returning home from a mission, she hadn't taken it seriously.
Now she wishes she had.
The nightmares she had before the mission to Mars, had been mild, made up and easy to shake off, but these nightmares, the ones she's been having since her return to Earth nearly a month ago, are more real, they're nightmares of things that had happened in the last three years, things that has ended completely differently in reality then they did in her head.
She doesn't know how to handle these new, deadly nightmares.
She hears a voice behind her.
"Em."
Matt.
She must've woken him up when she left the bed.
She spins around, looking into the eyes of her husband, her coffee cup still in her hands, empty. "What are you doing up?" She asks in confusion, she thought he was dead to the world. Evidently not. The Commander thinks to herself. Matt rolls his eyes as he walks slowly into the kitchen until he's directly in front of her.
"I could ask you the same thing." He answers, his voice is quiet and if he weren't in front of her, she most likely wouldn't have heard him.
"I couldn't sleep." She answers, lying to him. She doesn't want to admit to him that she's having nightmares, she doesn't want him worrying even more about her. Matt plucks the empty cup from her hands, places it on the island before stepping away and looking at her. Really looking at her.
"You're having nightmares." He states with a sigh. Emma doesn't say anything which confirms what Matt has just stated. Matt slams his hand down on the counter as quietly as he can as not to walk their sleeping daughter.
"Damn it, Emma," Matt hisses quietly. "I thought we were done keeping secrets from each other." He spits out angrily as he turns away from her. Emma sighs, knowing what her husband is thinking about. "I wasn't keeping any secrets from you, Matt." She replies. Matt scoffs and turns back around, his arms folded over his bare chest. It now occurs to her that he's shirtless because she's wearing his shirt.
"You not telling me that you're having nightmares again is keeping secrets from me!" He spits, it's her turn to scoff with a roll of her eyes.
"Oh I'm sorry, I didn't know that I had to tell you everything that's going on in my life." She says sarcastically. Matt just shakes his head.
"I'm your husband, Emma, it's my job to comfort you when you need me just like you do to me!" He has a point, Emma supposes as she sees her husband turn away from her again. Emma walks up behind her hand, wraps her arms around his waist and kisses his bare back softly before resting her head on his shoulder blades. "I'm sorry." She whispers into his back, Matt doesn't respond, but he does cover her hands with one of his own.
They stand in the middle of the kitchen in silence as the sun slowly rises.
"You two okay?" Lex asks them tiredly as she enters the kitchen for her morning coffee. Their daughter is dressed with her bag on the kitchen table. Their daughter's voice breaks them out of their silence and their embrace. Emma unlocks her arms from Matt's waist and nods at her daughter, giving her a smile before leaving and walking up the stairs to her bedroom, not noticing the looks her husband and daughter are giving her.
"Is everything okay between you two?" Lex asks him, handing him a cup of coffee just after they've heard his bedroom door close. Matt had learned not to lie to his daughter over the last three years. "I only ask because you've been inseparable since she got home and just then it looked like something was wrong, it was like that time you guys had that massive fight that ended with her leaving the house for a week when I was 11." Lex explains with a watery look, Matt sighs as that fight springs to mind. That fight almost broke him and Emma.
"Mom's just tired, sweetie, she's not been sleeping well since she got back. Nothing is happening with me and your Mom, Lex, we're fine, we're stronger than we've ever been. I promise. You just worry about school and Issac and Cass. I'll worry about Mom." Matt says, kissing his daughter on her forehead before putting his untouched coffee cup on the counter and leaves the kitchen, heading up to his bedroom where his wife is.
He meant what he told Lex: he and Emma are stronger than they've ever been.
Emma is curled up on her side of the end, facing the window, her back to the door.
"Lez is worried." Announces Matt as he walks back into their bedroom. Emma rolls over and sees her husband leaning against the closed bedroom door, looking at her with a frown. She shouldn't be." She replies.
"Try telling her that." Matt snaps before taking a deep breath and coming to sit on their bed. He takes one of her hands in his hands and looks at her.
"You know you can tell me anything right? You don't need to keep anything from me. I told you on our wedding day that I'm in this with you and that's still true today. I'm in this with you, Emma Green. You can try and push me away as many times as you want but I'm not letting you go." Matt says gently, Emma nods, she knows that he'll never let her go.
"Yeah," she whispers. "I know." Matt leans over and down, and kisses her gently.
"I love you, fucker." He says, Emma smiles against his lips.
"I love you too, shithead." She replies.
A\N: This one is complete, and now I'm tempted to write the big fight that Lex mentioned. Away is sooo good and so well done. I have a few other stories that need my attention for other fandoms but after I've done them, I can work on my fourth Away story. Hope you enjoyed this one, Angels.
