I was looking through old documents and found a few of these chapters floating around. I'll have a nice, big, epilogue to finish it off, as well. I reviewed what I had previously written for this story and found that I really liked this happy little universe that I created for Finn and Rachel, and I hope you do, too.
Disclaimer: I don't own anything.
Rachel might have been a customer at the coffee shop for several years, but she still scanned the menu every time as if she was going to order something completely different. She had two or three things she consistently ordered from the menu, depending on her mood, and everyone that worked in the neighborhood coffee shop knew that. Still, Rachel liked to consider her options, just in case.
"I'll have a medium chai latte, with soy milk and a shot of espresso," Rachel finally said. The barista smiled as she marked Rachel's cup, since she knew what Rachel's usual order was. Rachel added, "And I'll take a large dark roast, black. It's for my husband."
Truthfully, Rachel only added the last bit because she was still in that phase where she loved calling Finn her husband. They hadn't been married for that long, after all, and she still got a thrill every time she glanced down and saw her wedding band on her left ring finger.
The barista grabbed another cup automatically as Rachel rattled off the rest of her order, but she paused when Rachel said who it was for. "Your husband?" the barista repeated. She smiled as she filled the cup with the café's signature dark roast—Finn's favorite. "Did you marry that tall guy, then?"
"The tall guy?" Rachel repeated with a furrowed brow. "Is that really how you guys refer to Finn?"
The barista—whose name was Amy—shrugged her shoulders and tossed her blonde hair back. The ends were dyed pink, and she was one of those people who looked good with any kind of hair color, no matter what it was. "I mean, like, we know his name, but we like to call him the tall guy. And even though we know that you're Rachel Berry, some of the newer baristas call you the short girl. You guys are, like, the couple we all idolize?"
Even though Amy's voice went up at the end, as if it were question, Rachel really knew it was a statement. Apparently, they were quite the shipped pairing among the baristas in the coffee shop. She found that to be inexplicably amusing, and it oddly made her feel pretty cool.
"Really?" Rachel was thankful that the café wasn't crowded, because she was way too interested in the turn this conversation had taken. She leaned against the counter and hoped that Finn wouldn't mind the delay in getting their coffee. "Would you mind explaining?"
Amy shrugged her shoulders again. "You guys are cute, that's all. Almost nauseatingly cute. It's sweet."
Rachel felt her cheeks flush, feeling almost ridiculously giddy at the description of her relationship with Finn. She accepted the coffee cups from Amy and took a sip of her latte. She paid for their drinks and made sure to leave an extra tip.
Rachel was on the phone with the director of her latest show, and she had tasked Finn with going into the café and getting their coffee. She had assured Finn that she would only be a few moments behind, and she had also requested that he get her something with a lot of caffeine, as opposed to her usual chai latte.
"Hi," Finn said in return to the barista's greeting. "Can I have a large dark roast, black, and a… uh… a honey almond latte? With soy milk, please. And an extra shot of espresso."
"Hmmm…" The barista wrote the cups and then rang up the drinks, adding an extra espresso shot to Rachel's latte without charge, and charging Finn's coffee as a medium instead of a large. Loyalty was appreciated at the coffee shop, which was why Finn didn't mind going an extra two blocks to get there.
"Your wife needs a bit of extra caffeine, then?" the barista continued. Finn thought her name was Carmen, and that Amy, Rachel's regular barista, had trained her. He wondered when he had begun to memorize the barista schedule at his wife's favorite coffee shop, and then he supposed that that was what happened when you got married to the love of your life.
"She only orders this type of latte when she's stressed," Carmen added. They still needed to wait for Rachel's drink, but Carmen passed over Finn's coffee cup, filled to the brim with the café's delicious signature dark roast.
Finn took a sip of the coffee, inhaling deeply as he held the cup under his nose. There was just something about the perfect cup of coffee, and he felt no shame in admitting that he and Rachel spent a small fortune on coffee yearly. It was the little things in life, after all.
"Congratulations on your wedding, by the way," Carmen told him as she passed Rachel's latte to Finn. "You guys got married what, a month ago?"
Finn didn't know if he should find it weird that the baristas at their favorite café knew so much about their lives, but he supposed that that's what happened when you visited a place every day. "Yeah, just a little over a month," Finn confirmed.
Carmen smiled. "You guys are so cute. Like, you're basically an inspiration to all of us."
Blushing slightly, Finn grinned at the compliment. He tucked an extra tip into the jar in front of the register as he picked up the coffee cups and went back out to his wife.
Dropping on the couch next to her husband, Rachel accepted the glass of wine he held out to her. She pressed a tender, lingering kiss to his cheek in thanks, and then curled into his side.
"So, have you realized that we're basically celebrities at that coffee shop you like so much?" Finn asked.
"Oh, you noticed, too?" Rachel was grinning as she looked up at him. She gazed down at the gorgeous diamond ring Finn had given to her, noting once again how amazing it looked next to the wedding band he had slid onto her finger a little over a month ago… and how wonderful it all made her feel.
"They know you there," Finn pointed out. "I mean, I guess I always knew that, since they always knew your name any time we went there, but… you're basically famous to those kids, Rach."
"I love the coffee there," Rachel said with a shrug of her shoulders. She sat up straight suddenly. "Oh! We should throw an event for the music store and have them do pastries and drinks! That way, everyone will know how great that place is."
Finn wasn't really sure why they needed to have an event at the music store (they normally did one at the holidays, and the beginning and end of the school year—it was the middle of October, now), but he was sure that Rachel would be able to come up with a reason. The store was very involved in the community after all, and Finn knew of several organizations they could throw a fundraiser for.
"I'll talk to the guys and see what we can put together," Finn said with an affectionate smile. He kissed the top of Rachel's head and then smiled broadly as she tugged him towards her, reclining back on the couch so that his body could cover hers.
They had decided to have the party the second week of November—Mike had suggested Halloween, but Finn and Rachel had immediately vetoed that idea, as Carole would not allow anything to interfere with their annual Halloween party. With Kurt's help, the event came together nicely, filled with fall decorations and autumn-themed foods. To Rachel and Quinn's delight, there were plenty of pumpkin-flavored things to go around.
The kids were putting on an autumn showcase, and proceeds from the event was going towards the music therapists at the nearest children's hospital. As promised, the coffee shop had provided coffee and pastries to the event. Sales were going well, and Rachel was glad that she had told the owner of the shop to bring extra—they were clearly going to need it.
Amy and Carmen were there, along with two other employees, Travis and Adam. Adam seemed to be in some sort of on-and-off relationship with Carmen, while Travis (for some reason that Finn could not figure out) appeared to have a crush on Kurt. Kurt was oblivious to it and Blaine, thankfully, thought it was fairly amusing.
Finn wondered when he had come to know so much about the lives of the baristas at his wife's favorite coffee shop. Still, he supposed at this point, he should admit that it was his favorite coffee shop, too. It was their place now, which Finn really liked the thought of. They had been going to that coffee shop since the early days of their dating. Now they were married.
"What's that stupid smile on your face for?" Puck demanded as he joined Finn by the pastry table. He grabbed a slice of pumpkin bread off of one of the trays and shoved half of it into his mouth at one time. "Is it because this coffee is good as shit?"
Finn rolled his eyes at the language Puck insisted on using. While he somehow managed to avoid having any of the kids in the music store hear it, Finn was always worried about the chance of it happening. He sent a pointed look Puck's way but decided to let it go for the moment. There was no point in starting the, "But I'm a badass, Hudson!" argument, because it always ended the same way.
"It is really good coffee," Finn agreed as he took yet another sip of his favorite dark roast. It was his third cup since the benefit had started—something told him that he was going to be up late tonight. "The workers are obsessed with Rachel, or something. We're basically like a celebrity couple to them."
It made sense to Finn that all of the baristas loved Rachel; given her career on Broadway, she was actually something of a celebrity. Finn wasn't entirely sure why they liked him so much. As long as it got him discounted coffee, though, he wasn't going to question it too much.
"What the hell for?" Puck demanded. "Look, you're my best friend, and Berry is my cousin, so I love you guys, but there is no way that you're a better couple than me and Q."
Finn rolled his eyes again, but decided it wouldn't do him any good to comment on it. Puck and Quinn had gotten engaged last year, and their wedding was set to take place just after the new year. Kurt was being just as much of a pain in the ass about their wedding as he was for Rachel and Finn's wedding, which delighted Finn to no end.
Puck clapped Finn on the back and jammed the rest of the pumpkin bread into his mouth before he swiped Finn's coffee cup and took a gulp of it. "I'm gonna go tell those baristas that Q and I are the better couple. Be back in a minute."
Finn was frowning into his coffee cup, wondering what kind of gross backwash Puck had left in there, when his wife came up to his side and wrapped both of her arms around his. Finn brightened instantly and set his coffee cup aside, leaning down to kiss her soundly.
"This was a great idea," Rachel enthused.
"It was."
"We should do this every year."
Finn smiled patiently; he had had a feeling that this was coming. "I'll see what we can do, Rach. But something tells me that there's a very good chance that we can make this into an annual thing. The exposure is good for the shop and the partnership with the coffee shop can send clients our way, too. Plus, what we can do for the therapy programs for the hospitals in this area… it'll be amazing."
Rachel beamed at Finn, stretching up on her tiptoes to kiss him. "You're amazing."
"Aw!" Carmen called from across the music shop as she nudged Amy in the side. "Aren't they just, like, the cutest?"
Rachel broke the kiss as she dissolved into giggles. Finn chuckled as he wrapped his arms around his wife and pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly.
