Background:
Author's Note: Get ready for a REALLY long summary of the series. And this is just a short, basic summary. If I went into more details, it'd be longer. Also, I'm explaining the series to MY knowledge, so forgive me if I got wrong on several details.
After the end of WWII, the world was split into two. East and West. This marked the beginning of the era called the Cold War.
In 1964, a C.I.A. Operation was initiated in secret, called the Virtuous Mission. Led by FOX unit leader, Major Zero, the mission was to retrieve a defected Soviet Scientist, Nikolai Stepanovich Sokolov. The mission was to be carried by their best soldier yet, Naked Snake, the prodigy son of The Boss. The mission was going smoothly, until Naked Snake was betrayed by The Boss herself. In doing so, FOX was framed for a nuclear attack and the only way to clear their name and prevent an all-out nuclear war was to kill the Boss and her benefactor, Colonel Volgin. And thus, Operation Snake Eater has begun.
Naked Snake once again took part of the mission, along with Major Zero, and defeated the Boss and her Cobra unit along with Colonel Volgin. With the help of Eva, a female Russian spy, Snake was able to destroy the fortress along with the weapon Sokolov was forced to make for him, the Shagohod which is a heavy tank capable of launching nukes. However, he still had one more mission he needed to do. He had to face the Boss, his mentor and traitor to her country. Snake hesitated to confront her, but she left him no choice and the two fought, leaving Snake victorious. However, after he defeated the Boss, he learned the truth of her mission. She was sent to Volgin to claim the Philosophers' Legacy, a large statement of Allied Forces united money account. The mission changed when Volgin fired an american nuclear missile at Sokolov's lab, framing America. Thus, Snake had to kill his mentor and retrieve the Philosopher's Legacy. However, neither America nor Russia were able to claim the legacy, thanks to Eva and Revolver Ocelot, a former GRU soldier who was working for Major Zero to ensure Snake's success on the mission. With the Legacy, Major Zero was able to use it to carry on the Boss' will and unite the world into one without borders and created a secret organization called Cipher which will create the perfect system to ensure to carry on the Boss goal, called The Patriots.
Big Boss did not agree with Major Zero's vision and left his unit in the 1970's. He made his own mercenary group known as the Militaires Sans Frontières (MSF) with the help of Kazuhira Miller. They were later hired in 1974 by the KGB agent (and secretly an agent working for Major Zero), to stop an American unit in Costa Rica conducting nuclear weapon testing in secret. The project was known as Peace Walker, a bipedal walking AI weapon capable of launching a nuke, and it was designed to ensure true peace to the world. However, Big Boss stopped the project and once again prevented an all-out nuclear war. Afterwards, he claimed those nuclear weapons for his army as a deterrence should America or Russia dare to confront Snake and MSF. However, he was later betrayed by Huey Emmerich as he contacted Zero's second unit, XOF, led by Skullface who betrayed Zero and took control of Cipher and carried on the Boss' will in his own way. When Cipher attacked MSF, Big Boss was presumed to be dead. However, he survived but was left in a coma for 9 years. In 1984, Big Boss woke up, along with his most trusted soldier, Venom Snake, who will take his face and name to seek vengeance against Skullface, Emmerich and any lingering phantoms that still existed in their souls; with the help of Kazuhira Miller who also survived the attack and Revolver Ocelot, who was loyal to Big Boss and was ordered to ensure Venom's success. Together, the three created Diamond Dogs, which will later become the ultimate mercenary group, Outer Heaven.
Meanwhile, Big Boss returns to America and creates his own unit, FOXHOUND. There, he met one of his sons, David, who was created from Zero in a cloning project called Les Enfant Terribles. Two children were made behind Big Boss awareness (which resulted in him leaving Zero), David and Eli, who will inherit the title of Solid and Liquid Snake. Big Boss sent Solid Snake to Outer Heaven in 1995 for they had the possession of Metal Gear, a weapon capable of launching a nuke, just like its predecessors, The Shagohod and Peace Walker. The mission was called Operation Intrude N313 (which was later known as the Outer Heaven Incident) and Big Boss led the operation. However, Big Boss sent Solid Snake to ensure that the operation fails and Outer Heaven succeeds. Unfortunately, Big Boss underestimated Solid Snake. He was able to destroy Metal Gear and confronted Venom Snake, who Solid believed was Big Boss himself. Afterwards, Solid Snake defeated Venom Snake and escaped the destruction of Outer Heaven. When all of this was happening, Big Boss along with several of his men, including Frank Jaeger who was known as Grey Fox and a good friend to Solid Snake. After the Outer Heaven Incident, Colonel Roy Campbell took command of FOXHOUND. In 1999, another incident occurred with Big Boss and his unit. Another uprising occurred in Zanzibar land which was led by Big Boss himself. Mustang sent Solid Snake to confront Big Boss and his men, including Gray Fox. The two soldiers fought in a minefield but Solid Snake was victorious. He then faced Big Boss who revealed to him that he was his father and the two fought to the death. Solid Snake was victorious and Big Boss was killed in action. Afterwards, Solid Snake retired and lived off in Alaska until 2005 when the Colonel kidnapped him and required his help once more.
After Snake retired, FOXHOUND began a revolt and took control of Shadow Moses which was actually a nuclear testing facility with possession of nukes. Solid Snake was ordered to rescue the hostages, along with Colonel Campbell and stop the uprising as well as prevent them from firing a nuke with the latest weapon, Metal Gear REX. The entire uprising was being led by Liquid Snake, his twin brother. His demands were a high amount of money; the body of Big Boss and the vaccines for FOXDIE, an engineered-virus that targets specific targets, and he, along with several people were infected with it. Solid Snake infiltrated the facility and confronted FOXHOUND greatest soldiers, Decoy Octopus; Revolver Ocelot; Psycho Mantis; Sniper Wolf; Vulcan Raven and Liquid Snake. And, with the help of Dr. Hal Emmerich (Codenamed: Otacon), the son of Huey Emmerich and creator of Metal Gear REX, Solid Snake was able to stop Liquid Snake and his uprising, destroying Metal Gear REX along the way.
We thought it was over, but Ocelot managed to escape with the data of Metal Gear REX by orders of the president of the United States, George Sears who is also known to be Solidus Snake, the third son and perfect clone of Big Boss. Two years later, The U.S. marines created Metal Gear RAY to fight back other Metal Gears that were starting to show up across the black market. Solid Snake and Otacon went undercover to expose Metal Gear, but things got out of control as Russian soldiers invaded the USS Discovery, the ship holding Metal Gear RAY. Ocelot was working along with the Russians until he betrayed them and took Metal Gear RAY, framing Solid Snake as the culprit for the attack.
Then, in 2009, Another incident occurred where The President of the United States was kidnapped and being held hostage by a terrorist group who's being led by Solid Snake; but it was not Solid Snake. The leader was none other than Solidus Snake. A new soldier known as Raiden was ordered to rescue the president and stop the terrorist group. Along the way he encounters Pliskin, who turns out to be Solid Snake in disguise, and together they attempt to stop the terrorist group. However, it turns out that the incident was a simulation of the Shadow Moses incident and Raiden is being tested by The Patriots, the very organization Major Zero created in the past. Raiden must complete the mission and kill Solidus Snake. Meanwhile, Solid Snake went after Ocelot who's now being mind-controlled by the now deceased Liquid Snake. Unfortunately, Ocelot escaped with Metal Gear Ray and Raiden stopped the terrorists and killed Solidus Snake. But it was far from over.
Solid Snake, Otacon and Raiden went on pursuit to stop Ocelot AND The Patriots. In 2014, Solid Snake had a lead on Ocelot and went after him. However, War has changed as it has now become the very economy itself due to the influence of the Patriots. And so, Ocelot has a plan to control the Patriots and control the very war economy itself. Solid Snake must stop before time runs out, for the very genes in his body are starting to deteriorate and he'll eventually die within a year.
In order for Snake to stop Ocelot, Solid Snake went to meet Big Mama, who turns out to be Eva, the former spy who helped Big Boss in Snake Eater… and Solid and Liquid Snake's mother. She tells Solid Snake that clearance to control the system of the Patriots would be to have the DNA of Big Boss himself. Unfortunately, Ocelot managed to obtain Big Boss' DNA and gain control of the Patriot control system, Sons of the Patriots, ceasing every conflict occurring around the world. However, not all was lost; with the help of Roy Campbell, Raiden, Otacon and all of his friends and allies, Solid Snake managed to stop Liquid by destroying the Patriot System and freeing the world from their grasp. However, this was Ocelot's plan all along. He wanted Snake to destroy the system to free Big Boss TRUE corpse from the Patriots and revive him with the DNA of Solidus Snake, Liquid Snake and genetic nanomachines. Big Boss was revived and went to find Major Zero's location to finally end it all, only to find an empty shell of a man who was brain-dead due to the betrayal of Skullface.
Finally, Big Boss faced Solid Snake, on the tomb of his former mentor, The Boss. Big Boss told Solid Snake the truth about his endless war against Zero and his system. Despite the two's endless conflict, they both desire to fulfill the Boss' will and unite the world under one nation. Sadly, neither did not understand the Boss until the end.
She did not want to create a single nation nor a nation for soldiers. She desired a nation where soldiers are no longer needed and are free to live as men, not as a weapon. And so, Big Boss ended Zero's life and before his life ended, he asked Snake to live on, not as a Snake but as a man.
And so, the Saga of The Boss' Will and her legacy ended.
