This is an idea that had come into my mind after completing Mortal Kombat II a few days ago. I have written a Mortal Kombat fic before, being a reimagining of 2011's Mortal Kombat, but upon finishing MKII, I wanted to write a Liu Kang/Kitana centric fic. Originally, this was supposed to be taking place at the end of MKII, but then I realized that Kitana was captured by Outworld's forces and sentenced to death for murdering Mileena during the Outworld Tournament, so it wouldn't work. This fice takes place after the events of Mortal Kombat 3, where Liu Kang defeats Shao Kahn and Edenia is freed from his grasp.

Disclaimer: I do not own the Mortal Kombat franchise. It belongs to Midway/Netherrealm Studios, Warner Bros. and Ed Boon.

Wu Shi Academy, China

Inside the Wu Shi Academy temple was a memorial built for the Shaolin monks who had fallen during the attack on the temple instigated by Outworld's Tarkatan army as a response to Shang Tsung's defeat in the tenth Mortal Kombat tournament the previous year. Standing on the grounds of the temple was a young man clad with a slim muscular frame, black shaggy hair and brown eyes, clad in his fighting outfit; a pair of black kung fu pants with red accents, a red headband, spiked wristbands and black kung fu slippers with white socks. The young man was Liu Kang, a member of the White Lotus Society and a shaolin monk who had trained under the legendary martial arts master, Bo' Rai Cho.

As he paid his respects towards his fallen Shaolin brothers, Liu Kang's mind drifted back to the moment he returned home following his victory at the Mortal Kombat tournament and found the corpses of his fellow monks on the ground. Seeing the blood of his fellow brothers spilled on the floor and the temple being left in ruins made Liu Kang's blood boil and allowed him to be consumed by his anger, nascent from his guilt over not being there for his fellow brothers as well as his desire of revenge against Shao Khan's forces, eventually leading to him defeating Shao Kahn during the Outworld tournament and thwarting his Earthrealm invasion, although it took the apparent death of his fellow monk, Kung Lao, to encourage him to defeat the Emperor.

While meditating on the recent events that took place, Liu Kang heard small footsteps coming from outside the temple, getting him distracted from his thought bubbles, and turned around to see a familiar face; the figure was a woman who looked like in her early twenties, clad in a blue fighting leotard with matching blue long gloves, knee-high boots and mask and had her hair tied into a bun. Liu Kang immediately recognized her as Kitana, the beautiful princess of Edenia whom he met during the Outworld tournament and later joined him in the fight for Earthrealm against Shao Kahn's forces as well as freeing her mother from Shao Kahn's control and restoring Edenia.

"Princess Kitana," Liu Kang said as he saw her. "What brings you here?"

"I have never had the chance to visit the Shaolin temple nor spent some time with you," Kitana told Liu Kang before turning around and seeing the memorial built for the fallen Shaolin monks. "I am very sorry for what had happened to them."

"I appreciate your condolences, Kitana," Liu Kang thanked Kitana. "Had I have known sooner, I would have saved them. I would have done everything in my power to stop the Tarkatans." Liu Kang let out a mournful sigh, as the memories of the corpses of his fellow Shaolin brothers kept flashing in his head before turning around and looking at the sky. "I know somewhere out there, they have finally found peace and are counting on me to pass their teachings to the next generation."

"And you will," Kitana assured Liu Kang as she placed her hand on his shoulder. "You are a brave warrior and a good man, Liu Kang, and I have seen how much you have done to take down Shao Kahn and his forces. They would be very proud of you."

"And you are a courageous warrior yourself, Kitana. You had also helped us take down the Emperor and freed your mother from his control," Liu Kang complimented Kitana, who nodded and smiled. "What will you do now?"

"Now that Edenia has been freed from Outworld's control, I will work with my mother to rebuild our realm and fend off against what's left of Shao Kahn's forces. He will pay for what he has done to Edenia and for killing my father," Kitana confessed. "And you?"

"With Kahn no longer posing a threat to Outworld, I am planning on rebuilding the Shaolin temple and passing on our teachings to the next generation. Who knows what new threat could possibly loom in Earthrealm," Liu Kang said as he looked at Kitana. "I had already planned on doing so alongside Kung Lao before Shao Kahn began his invasion on Earthrealm. Though Kung Lao is no longer here, I will keep his memory alive by rebuilding the Shaolin. That is what he would have wanted."

Kitana nodded and understood that he was still grieving for Kung Lao, who had been mortally wounded during the final battle against Shao Kahn, but still willing to honor his memory and move forward by rebuilding the White Lotus Society.

"Thank you for saving my realm, Liu Kang," Kitana thanked Liu Kang. "Edenia is forever indebted to you. I wish you the best of luck on rebuilding the Shaolin."

"And you on restoring your realm with Sindel, Kitana," Liu Kang told Kitana as he looked at her. "I hope we meet again under different circumstances."

Liu Kang then walked slowly towards Kitana and wrapped his arms around her, with Kitana wrapping her arms around him and tightening her embrace, as she knew this may possibly be the last time the two would see each other physically, with Kitana planning on restoring Edenia to its former glory and Liu Kang preparing to rebuild the Shaolin temples as well as searching for a new generation of Shaolin monks to train them. However, despite all of it, Liu Kang and Kitana were grateful to have each other and held hope that they would be able to see each other again.

And that's the end of the story. I hope I had done a decent job with writing Liu Kang and Kitana together, since they are one of Mortal Kombat's most iconic couples, though I don't see myself being good with romance scenes.

Liu Kang believing Kung Lao being dead during the final fight against Shao Kahn is a reference to his Mortal Kombat 3 ending, where Kung Lao was apparently killed by Kahn, but we all know that Kung Lao isn't actually dead, since he later appears from Mortal Kombat Gold onwards.

Let me know your thoughts on this story and I hope you liked it. Until then, stay safe and take care.
