Chapter 1: Tell Me Weiss
Another day… another failure…
A blonde teen entered the cafeteria, shambling along despondently. Each step was heavy, so much so every stride left his body aching.
He drew looks from the other students around him. Some snickered, others looked sympathetic towards his misery. By now, this was an everyday occurrence. Not that Jaune could bring himself to care…
At this point, he always secretly expected to fail (as he had today). But, at the same time, the knight still hoped to leave a dent in that icy armor.
His dad had told him that all he needed was to have confidence! …and Jaune did have just that! Was it not confident to approach someone who kept rejecting you, in the hopes of finding success?
The teen finally arrived at his destination, Jaune's team sitting and awaiting their leader's arrival. Pyrrha (his partner) had saved him a seat, as she usually did. Her smile was nothing short of a beacon of hope and comfort for Jaune, always there when he needed it. …and, oh boy, did he NEED it.
"Here you go fearless leader, I saved you a plate!" Nora was quick to hand the blonde boy some of the leftover food they'd gotten.
"Thanks, Nora…" he replied neutrally, setting the tray in front of himself, it wasn't anything that great. Jaune noticed how the spot where his pancakes should have been was suspiciously empty, but he didn't mind all that much. His latest failure had left Jaune without much of an appetite.
A hand patted his shoulder a few times, his redheaded partner smiling softly at him. She obviously knew… they ALL did.
As embarrassing as it was, the knowledge didn't bother him that much. Was it because they were his team, his friends? He wasn't sure why, but he found his lack of concern a relief…
Jaune decided to eat while he had the chance, Nora telling them about a crazy dream she'd had last night. Something about bears, beans, and Ren in a princess dress…
He and Pyrrha laughed at the absurdity of it all, said 'princess' staring flatly at his childhood friend with the same look he always had.
Jaune noticed that Nora had paused her tale, obviously spotting something. Her hand shot up and she started waving. "Hey Ruby, over here!" the orangette bellowed.
Jaune and the rest of his team turned to face the approaching Team RWBY. Their small leader moved quickly, her sister Yang by her side.
The young Arc's gaze shifted, landing on the same white-haired heiress that had left him so despondent.
The small, bright spot he'd found earlier with his own team started to vanish. Jaune's dread began to overtake him, he moved to his feet.
"Jaune?" his partner prompted, having noticed him get up.
"Sorry guys, I think I need to finish up a few things before Oobleck's next class!" The blonde boy rushed off, smiling softly.
…
"Oh man… that must have looked so lame…" Jaune groaned, plopping down upon his bed. He'd lied to his team, all to avoid running into Weiss. Jaune just couldn't face her right now, not so soon after he'd tried (and failed) to woo her yet again.
He'd prefer to avoid showing this weak side of himself to his team, if he could. Jaune was supposed to be their fearless leader! He, at the very least, needed to play the part!
The door to the room opened, Jaune sitting up in a hurry to identify the intruder. It was his male teammate who entered, closing the door behind him.
"H-Hey Ren!" Jaune greeted weakly, his voice straining to sound normal. "I thought you were going to stay with Nora and Pyr."
"I was, but I recalled that I also have to finish some things before class…" Ren explained, his voice flat. He sat at the sole table in their room, starting to work on something.
'Liar…' Jaune thought to himself. He knew for a fact that Ren was the same as Pyrrha, in the sense that he made sure to finish assignments as soon as he received them.
The blonde Arc was certain that his friend was only keeping him company. It was selfless, caring… and also a bit annoying. Couldn't they understand that he needed a bit of time alone, after his most recent defeat?
He needed to get rid of Ren for the moment… but how?
Jaune didn't want to offend his friend, he was just looking out for him out of the goodness of his heart. The knight just needed to make the monk uncomfortable enough to convince him to leave on his own… 'Wait, that's it!'
"Hey, Ren…" Jaune began, "can we… talk?"
The raven-haired teen turned towards his teammate, directing his steady gaze at Jaune. "Of course, what is it about?" Ren sat, waiting quietly for his leader's answer.
Jaune took a moment, considering how to explain it. "I-I tried to ask Weiss out earlier, it didn't go so well…" the blonde teen admitted. The blonde could think of nothing else he could bring up that would make his teammate want to leave. To Jaune's dismay, Ren simply nodded in understanding… there was no judgment conveyed whatsoever.
"I see… I presume this was before you met up with us in the cafeteria…" Ren concluded, the blonde nodding for conformation. "Jaune, I know it is not my place to say this… but perhaps you should change your approach?"
Jaune was surprised, REN was about to give HIM dating advice? Despite the fact he and Nora were the most confusing thing EVER? They were together, but not together-together? What did that even MEAN?!
"C-Change it? Like… maybe surprise her with some flowers or something, instead of serenading her?"
"That too… But, what I meant by changing your approach was to try ignoring her for a bit?" Ren started to explain. "Maybe try going out with someone else? Make her jealous? Or, maybe even forget about her entirely?" The stoic teen could only hope this would be enough to clue Jaune in, concerning the possibility of there being someone else besides Weiss out there for him. He and Nora had been rooting for Pyrrha and his leader to get together, for what felt like AGES.
The blonde teen still looked somewhat unsure, that only convinced Ren to push harder. "Jaune, why don't you give it a chance? I'll even help you out, if I can" the monk offered.
Jaune suddenly froze, his eyes wide open, like he'd been hit by a sudden epiphany.
'Did I finally get through to him?' Ren could only hope, as Jaune stared at his friend for a few seconds.
"Will you?" the blonde asked. "Help me, that is?"
Now, Ren could freely admit that he wasn't much of a social butterfly- people skills were not his area of expertise. But if it was to help his friend, then he'd do his very best. "Of course, I will."
Ren's answer left Jaune smiling brightly, gone were the doubts that had plagued his mind, the knight was now fully committed to his plan. "Great! Okay, I'll need to get started right away!"
'Get started? On what?' the raven-haired boy wondered.
"I'll need to find the right place, some outfits too… Also, the two of us won't be enough!" the blonde teen declared, he moved to the door. "Come on Ren, we may just be able to make it work!"
Ren could only watch in worry, exactly what had he gotten himself into? 'Let's just hope that it won't be too terrible…'

"A band?" whispered a monkey Faunus in wonder.
Sun stared at his newest blonde friend, Jaune. He'd first met the guy, and the rest of Team JNPR, while he'd been following Blake and her own team around Beacon. The knight was a cool guy, Sun had instantly befriended him.
He'd been just wandering around the school with his partner Neptune, hoping to run into Blake and her team. At least that had been the case before Jaune called them over, both he and his quiet teammate Ren stopping them.
"Yeah! Both Ren and I want to start a band!" the young Arc declared, a smile on his face. "I wanted to ask you to join us!"
…
There was a minute of silence, the world around them seemed to stop completely.
Sun glanced at Ren, seeing how excited he seemed about the idea. Sun was a cool, chill dude so he responded as such. "Um… why?" the Faunus asked.
Jaune seemed to understand how that had sounded, the knight almost took a step back before he remembered his goal. He stood his ground, explaining his plan to Sun and Neptune.
"Wait, so, let me get this straight… You struck out with Weiss on your own, so now you want to form a band to help you improve your chances?" the blue-haired teen asked, one eyebrow raised.
"That's pretty much a summary of it, yeah…" Jaune admitted, embarrassed at saying it out loud. "So, what do you think?"
'Is this guy serious?' Neptune marveled. Was Jaune unaware that he himself was ALSO trying to get a date from the famous girl, that the blue-haired boy just needed to find a way to start talking to her? There was NO WAY he was about to agree to something-
"You bet we'll help!" Sun declared, too excited to elaborate any further.
"What- we will?!" his partner responded. "Sun, you can't just-" Before Neptune could voice his own refusal and pull his partner down the hall, the Faunus simply dragged him off to the side.
"Give us a sec, okay?" the smiling Sun asked.
Now a few feet away from the male members of Team JNPR, Neptune stared at his partner.
"What's the deal, man? Why would you just agree to this crazy idea? Not only for yourself, but including me as well?!" Admittedly Neptune was pretty pissed at the idea, it honestly sounded rather silly. Plus, him and Jaune were trying to impress the same chick!
"Oh, come on man! It'll be fun!" the blonde declared with a smile.
"No, no it won't be! Besides… why would I even WANT to help him? You do remember that I'm going to ask Weiss out myself, right?" Neptune prodded, pointing out what bothered him the most about this plan.
"Because it's the right thing to do?" Sun answered, as if the reason was obvious.
"What?!" the blue-haired teen squawked, not quite grasping his partner's answer.
"Just hear me out, man… Back home, you've got quite a few girls you're dating… right? Plus, some of our team's 'fans' that you regularly chat up… That's not even mentioning the second we arrived at Beacon, you already had several girls flirting with you…" Sun pointed out. "Now… do you want to date Weiss because you really like her? Or, just to add her to "the list"?" the blonde chided, suddenly as serious as a heart attack. He stared at his blue-haired friend, who looked quite annoyed at being called out. "Come on, man… Jaune's desperate here, and he's doing this for only one girl… are you REALLY going to take this away from him?"
Neptune looked back at the innocently smiling knight, he couldn't help but sigh in defeat. 'Damn blondes… always getting what they want…' he groused silently, walking back towards an upbeat Jaune.
"Okay, both of us are in!" he declared, Sun chipping in a thumbs up and a toothy grin.
Ren could only watch in despair, as the mess he had somehow caused gained momentum, he was already regretting this…
…
"Well, what do you think?" Jaune asked the three new members of his band. After the addition of Sun and Neptune, the four had moved to JNPR's dorm room to go over Jaune's notes concerning his grand plan.
After skimming over the knight's so-called 'notes', it was clear why Jaune had failed so consistently up to this point. There was no easy way to say it… they were just bad. Too grand, too detailed… every option far beyond what one person could do.
"Um… it's very passionate?" Ren tried, hoping to soften the blow.
"Basically, it sucks…" the blue-haired teen declared, Ren and Sun glaring at his bluntness. "Hey, you know I'm right. Besides, if we're really doing this then I want it to be done well!" He grabbed Jaune's notes and flipped through them a few times, before he noticed something.
One of them wasn't all that bad… it could even be doable.
"What about this one? It's decent and I can kind of see it working."
"Oh, that one's no good… It needs FIVE people, so-" Jaune explained, before he was cut off.
"Well, then we just need to find our fifth member!" Sun shouted. He picked up his scroll, dialing a few numbers, there was no response.
"Sun, if you're trying to call Scarlet or Sage then save yourself the trouble… They both said that they had some stuff to do in Vale, before they left this morning…" Neptune reminded his friend, the Faunus looking disappointed by the news.
"Man, that tanks… Either one of them would have been a perfect fit for this… now we're back at square one…" Sun opined.
The only one currently silent was Ren, he couldn't help but hope this whole silly thing would end with this. But maybe he could help nip this in the bud, before the others came up with a real solution. "Maybe you know of someone who could help us, Jaune?" he asked his team leader.
The only dudes Jaune seemed to know (not currently already in the band) were Cardin and his team, there was no way in hell he was going to ask any of them. Sure, they were on MUCH better terms than early on in the year… but that was an EXTREMELY low bar. The knight's frustrated musings only lasted for a few seconds before Jaune's eyes opened wide, he seemed to remember something.
"Dudes… I think I know a guy…" the blonde Arc declared.
…
"I'm sorry… WHAT?" asked a gray-haired teen. He'd just heard one of the most insane things ever… and he was helping to destroy Vale, so a woman who'd threatened his life a million times could get magic powers!
"We want you to join our band!" the blonde boy (Jaune, he recalled) exclaimed. The knight had been someone Mercury had met, while he'd been tailing one of his boss's targets (as she was the blonde's partner).
Mercury found that sort of cloak and dagger work a huge hassle, to say the least. But, Cinder's orders couldn't be taken lightly…
"A band, why?" he asked, instead of doing what he wanted. Like kill them all, or laugh at them… or kill and then laugh at them!
"To help our boy find his true love!" the monkey Faunus explained excitedly, wrapping his arm around Jaune's shoulders.
That answer did not satisfy the gray-haired assassin, he was thankful this stupid venture wasn't a part of his mission. "I see… Sorry guys, I think I have to pass on that… got to meet my team and stuff" Mercury replied. He strutted down the hall with a smirk, relived that he could blow this off like it was nothing.
The assassin never noticed someone staring at him from an adjoining hallway…
…
Mercury arrived back at his dorm room. As he entered he noticed Cinder and Emerald talking about something, then instantly stopping to stare at him. Mercury simply closed the door, walking over, before sitting down on his bed.
"Were you followed?" his boss inquired.
"No… made sure of that…" he answered back.
"And what about your task? Did you manage to find out anything?" Cinder eyed him oddly.
Mercury sighed and look away. "No… she's very guarded, I didn't get a chance to talk to her much." He hadn't failed, Mercury just didn't arrive at his destination yet. But that didn't matter to Cinder, only results did… Mercury never suspected what was to come…
"I see… Then I suppose it was a good idea, allying yourself with her team leader and helping him out with that ridiculous idea of his…" the black-haired woman cooed.
'I what now?!' Mercury yelped, he didn't have ANY IDEA what his employer was talking about. "I-"
"I must say, I'm surprised to see you thinking so far ahead… instead of accepting your FAILURE. I would have been most disappointed, if you'd simply come back empty-handed…"
"How did you-" Mercury began. He'd just talked to those losers, not ten minutes ago! If they were the ones responsible for this dressing down, he'd kill them!
"Emerald here was kind enough to inform me, before you arrived…" Cinder pointed at her loyal minion, the thief obviously taking great pleasure in watching the gray-haired teen's face morph into a strained smile.
"She did? Thanks for that, Em…"
"Now I believe we shall deal with things on our end, while you do whatever needs to be done to befriend this Jaune Arc. …and Mercury? You had better not DISSAPOINT me…" Cinder purred, her voice low and dangerous.
'Well, fuck me…' Was it too late to try and jump out of the headmaster's office window?
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
Some may say that killing a person was one of the most difficult things someone could have to do, hurting a family member even more so! But Mercury Black would have preferred killing his asshole father, a hundred times in a row, over dealing with this bullshit!
"You want to join after all?" asked the blonde weakling, a dumb look upon his stupid face.
Gods, he wanted to punch that annoying face in!
"Please! I had some time to think it over and I want to help out!" Mercury had never felt sicker to hear his own voice.
"Wha- really? It's only been, like, half an hour…" the Arc pointed out.
Mercury could feel blood rushing to his face, he'd never felt this embarrassed. He could only nod for conformation.
"Well… I was going to ask someone else. But, since you're so eager, how can I say no?" Jaune smiled, inviting the gray-haired boy inside his room.
The rest of the group stared at their blonde founder, Jaune currently standing in the middle of the huddle. The knight scanned through his notes a few times, before handing Sun the one plan Neptune had approved of.
"So, how are we doing this?" the blue-haired teen asked. "Do we wander around, telling the other students about us?"
Jaune wasn't honestly sure, he'd actually planned on asking his new bandmates for help coming up with ideas. But seeing as they were just as clueless as he was, it was probably be better if Jaune thought up the solution himself. After all, this was HIS idea in the first place. That made it his responsibility to make sure the guys helping him out wouldn't regret doing so.
"I've got a plan… It might be a little out there, but hear me out first!" the young Arc pleaded.
He received a thumbs up from Sun, the monkey Faunus clearly his biggest supporter. Neptune offered Jaune a mild smile, seemingly okay with the idea. His teammate Ren seemed ambivalent, resigned to his fate. 'Is this what it feels like, to go on a mission I may not return from?'
Their last member, Mercury, just stood quietly with a calculating look on his face. He weighed his options, how likely was it that Cinder would end him if he just killed them all right now? Was it worth the risk? …he found the idea extremely tempting.
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
It was already dinnertime for the students of Beacon Academy. All the huntsmen and huntresses in training sat down with their friends, or teams. Team JNPR was no different… except that instead of their male members, they sat with the four girls of Team RWBY.
…not that Pyrrha had any problem with them! But she would have preferred that they all sit together, with Jaune and Ren present…
'I need to take care of something…' Ren had declared, before moving after their leader. He was a good friend like that.
Pyrrha only wished that she could have joined them, made certain her partner was okay. After all, he was special to her.
"Are you gonna keep sulking over there?" Yang chided, taking a bite from her meal and pointing at the redheaded champion.
"I was not sulking… merely thinking…" Pyrrha defended, not having the energy to argue.
"I bet it was about a certain blonde, right?" Yang's smile widened, the redhead staring at the brawler in shock. Yang simply leaned back, her grin turning shit-eating. "What can I say? …I'm always in other people's minds!" the boxer crowed, laughing loudly.
"Ruby… please control your sister… I would rather not receive odd looks from rest of the student body…" Weiss spoke up from next to her partner. The heiress was busy pouring over material for their history class for the fourth time, making sure she knew it all by heart.
"What do you think I've been trying to do, for all of these years…" the small reaper mumbled, trying to spot the missing members of Team JNPR. "Huh, is everything okay with Jaune? I haven't seen him since our last class…" Ruby asked. Jaune had been her first real friend (unlike those phonies at Signal), he was important to her! Jaune was also much nicer to Ruby (well, to everybody) than Weiss… not that she'd ever say that out loud!
"Our fearless leader? Pshh… he's fine… Renny's looking out for him!" Nora assured her friend. She played with her food, then devoured it.
"Well I, for one, am glad I do not have to deal with his annoying advances at the moment…" Weiss huffed, she closed her notes. "I'm sick of having to hear that annoying voice, every single day!"
Weiss failed to notice how Pyrrha and Nora both frowned at her words. Pyrrha, in particular, looked seriously annoyed.
"Hey now…" Yang interjected, "that's no way to talk about Jaune. I know that it's not an ideal situation, but come on…" the boxer chided, quick to defend her sister's first friend. Jaune was one of the most decent guys she knew… even if he was a little too scrawny for her tastes.
"Would it be alright if he was doing this to you?" the white-haired teen bit out, glaring at Yang. "Waiting in the halls, to ambush you with another tone-deaf song?! Trying to serenade you, as you leave our room first thing in the morning?!" Yang didn't respond, even for her it was all a bit much. Sweet, yes… but still a bit much.
"Well… I think I'd be flattered, more than anything…"
"Then, by all means! YOU can deal with him, the next time he tries… I'm not sure how I shall react, the next time the dolt tries his luck…" Weiss hissed, her fury roused just from contemplating it.
The students suddenly all fell completely silent. Looking around, everyone could sense that something was off. The cafeteria was still the same… but a gentle, blue mist seemed to creep into the room from all angles.
People began to get up from their seats, readying themselves for any sort of attack. A few of them had their weapons, but only a very small number of them were armed outside of combat class.
It seemed they were going to pay for that lack of preparedness…
"What's going on?" Ruby whined, more than a little nervous without Crescent Rose by her side. 'I knew I shouldn't have listened to Weiss and Yang!'
"I don't know Ruby, but stay close to me!" her older sister ordered, sliding into a boxing stance. Unlike Ruby, she was still perfectly capable of defending herself.
Suddenly the large windows surrounding the cafeteria were covered from the inside by big, dark drapes. Before anyone could discern what was going on… the lights went out.
The complete silence in the cafeteria was broken by a few quick steps, as well as something scraping across the floor.
A few of the upper years sitting by the windows snapped to attention, starting to pull the drapes apart. At the very least, they'd be able to see what was attacking them.
…
The second the drapes all parted, moonlight illuminated the cafeteria. The students noticed that a few tables were all butted up against one another, right in the middle of the room.
Standing on top of them, was a single person.
'Jaune?' Pyrrha had been the first to recognize her partner. He was staring down at the floor, holding something in his hand.
The rest of the students calmed down, understanding that there was no imminent attack, staring in wonder at the first year.
All of the members of Team RWBY and Team JNPR were ready to move closer, wanting to check out what was going on. Before they could do so, the assembled crowd heard something in the background.
It was music.
"What the-" Weiss shouted, before being overridden by the blonde Arc.
"Yeah…" Jaune sung softly, his gaze popping up and staring into the distance. "…you are… my fire…"
The students in the cafeteria held their breath as the blonde knight's words came out in a husky, gentle voice (accompanied by smooth background music).
"W-What?" Weiss yelped. The rest of her fellow students remained completely silent, too shocked to even think of doing anything besides listening to Jaune's voice.
"But we… are two worlds… apart…" the blonde teen continued to sing, several figures moving to stand behind him.
"Tell me, Weiss!" Jaune's voice became louder, the four men behind the knight stepping forward to flank him on both sides.
"Ain't nothin' but a heartache!" his backups started singing in harmony.
"Tell me, Weiss!" the blonde called out again.
"Ain't nothin' but a mistake!" the now visible Sun, Neptune, Ren, and Mercury sang as one.
"Tell me, Weiss!"
The song continued, Jaune and his backup singers trading places once in a while. They danced the exact same steps, making identical hand gestures, all completely in sync.
After a few minutes, Jaune sang the last line as softly as he could. He presented his outstretched hand towards his impromptu 'audience', smiling sweetly as he vocalized the final words.
…
"WHAT THE F-" Weiss shrieked in fury, quickly overwhelmed by loud applause and screams. The heiress' reaction was drowned out completely, by the tsunami of her peers' approval.
