Chapter 1- Tree house

Author note: This is a story after breaking dawn. I've been re-reading the twilight series and felt like writing this. This is only fan fiction, the characters, setting, etc, belongs to the original author. The story will follow after Break dawn when Nessie is a pre-teen and teen. I am hoping to do a chronological story, but we shall see.

4 years after Breaking dawn (approximately 12 years old)

"Renessme Carlie Cullen! You get your butt down here this instant!"

My mother's voice calls up angrily to me from somewhere down below, pulling me from my heavy slumber. I open my eyes, confused at first, but then I jolt awake as I remember.

Jacob snores loudly beside me, loud as a chain saw, and completely oblivious to the oncoming horror. His sleeping bag is unzipped and wide open, his huge arms and legs flailing across the small space like a star fish; his left hand and leg even overlap my blankets. Meanwhile, I'm crowded into the corner.

Sleeping bag hog.

I ignore his spread limbs and unzip my own bag; pushing down the extra fuzzy blanket he must have covered me with sometime during the night, and then leap lithely from my spot to the tree house entrance.

"Yes, mom?" I ask, nonchalant, peering innocently down at the ground.

If you look innocent, you are innocent, I repeat to myself, thankful my dad is away on a hunting trip in northern Canada with Uncle Emmett and Uncle Jasper. Because if he was here, he would be able to read my thoughts.

My mother stares up at me from a few paces away, standing beside a neighboring evergreen tree, her arms crossed, and an angry caterpillar set over her eyes. Her mouth is pursed in a thin line. Sam stands in his huge black wolf form beside her.

I wave down to them both, smiling bright and cheerfully. "Good morning!"

My mother scowls, not impressed. Sam lets out a huff.

"I have been searching for you all night." She starts. "Do you have any idea of how sick with worry we've been? You're Aunt Alice couldn't see a thing, and I didn't know where you were until I found your note on your bed this morning. I just about had a heart attack until I found it in your room."

I duck my head in guilt. "I was in bed…at midnight…but then I couldn't sleep…" I then continue lamely. "And...I wanted to finish the tree house before you guys saw it, and Jake said we could, so we came here to finish it…"

Great, I threw Jacob under the bus. Bonus points for using mom's nickname to soften her up.

My mother sighed, letting her arms fall to her sides. "So you decided to come all the way to La push to build it? What's wrong with the forest by our house? We have trees there, too."

I chew on my bottom lip, and bounce on the balls of my feet even though I'm crouched, a habit I picked up from her.

"I wanted to build it here…I wanted to show Amanda, Collin and Brandy, Sam and Emily, and everyone in La Push…"

My mother just sighs, and Sam growls through his mussel before disappearing into the bush, presumably to phase back to human in order to let Emily, his wife, know I am found.

And then I know the storm is over. For me, at least.

"Jacob!" she calls loudly and I wince. "Jacob!"

Behind me the snores stop and the swearing starts.

"What? What's with the racket?" he grumbles, his voice thick with sleep. "Where's the fire?"

Then he spots me.

"It's a code red." I mouth to him, in quick explanation. Although I'm sure my mother could hear me just as well. "The fox is in the hen house. I repeat, the fox is in the hen house!"

I then move away from the door way to the right side wall. It's the only wall with a window on the side...Well, a hole in the wall really, or hole in the thin board I should say.

Seriously this tree house isn't much of a build...

Jacob, meanwhile, tries to maneuver his giant form to the entrance in such a tiny space.

"Oh hey, bells. Fancy meeting you here." He jokes when he sees her.

My mother then let's him have it, going off on him about how the tree house isn't a structurally sound place for an almost 13 year old, and how he should be more responsible with me; and how going to La Push at 1 am to finish a tree house is a bad idea.

I listen silently for a few minutes as they go back and forth, like a tennis match, but eventually my mind wanders off as I've heard this conversation a million times before. Like the time I went to La Push on my own to visit my human friend Amanda without telling anybody, or the time I ran away from home and hide in a tree after an argument with my family, or the time I went off hunting with uncle Jasper and uncle Emmett in Oregon and was gone from Jacob for a whole 2 days...

Yeah...Jacob almost had a heart attack that time. Hmm...

I don't really pay much attention to either of them as they continue to bicker, and my eyes wandering over to my backpack in the corner where some leftover saw dust lays. An idea strikes me.

I quickly gather up my most important possessions, like my teddy bear Mr. Snuffles and my favorite fuzzy blanket, and then I make a quick two second decision, and jump out the window.

They can handle things.

"I'm going to Amanda's!" I announce, and before anyone can say anything or stop me, I leave.

I think I hear my mother call my name, but I'm already gone.

I leap from branch to branch, tree to tree, and smile when I don't hear anyone following behind me. Good.

I fly through the air, my body moving as fast as a car going fifty on the highway. Sure, it isn't as fast as a full grown vampire, but I'd say I got some extra speed thanks to my dad. I move faster than other half breed vampires apparently…this is a recent development thanks to my ever happening growth spurt.

Still, I have yet to get my period, if I even do, and Aunt Alice can't see when that will be…

I begin my decent downwards when I spot Amanda's familiar baby blue house through the trees. It's then that I hear the howl of a wolf a bit a ways behind me, and another responding howl even closer, right ahead of me.

So close that I have to stop on a branch and cover my ears.

When the sound quits, I look around for the wolf, but find nothing. I shrug and continue my way down.

As I get closer to the ground, I can hear Amanda and her mom snoring away in their individual rooms. How they slept through that howl? I do not know.

I push off the tree and somersault in the air, landing quietly as a cat by Amanda's window. Living on the reserve does have its advantages, similarly to Billy's house, Amanda's doesn't have many neighbors.

I knock on her window, a quick but heavy rap tap tap.

When she doesn't answer, I tap again, louder and more insistent this time. Again and again.

"I'm up! I'm up!" she calls. "Hold your horses Nessie!"

"I don't have any horses." I respond back with a smile.

To my right I think I hear a werewolf cough.

I scan the woods, but still don't see any familiar animal eyes…

Amanda throws her window open wide, hurriedly waving me in because it's cold, and I let go of whatever my vampire senses caught. I know I heard a werewolf nearby.

"What's got your panties in a twist this morning?" she asks, pulling on a pair of sweats over top of her pajama shorts. I sit cross legged on her bed and play with the fray of her native american dream catcher hanging on the wall.

She checks the time. "Jeez Nessie, It's only 7 o'clock in the morning. And on the weekend, too. Why couldn't you wake me up at ten thirty when I'm eating cereal and watching my Saturday morning cartoons?"

I shrug and take off my backpack, taking out Mr. snuffles. I hug him to my chest.

"Bad morning?" she asks, braiding her long black locks into a quick simple braid, before sitting down beside me.

I shrug. "Mom's mad at me and Jacob. We snuck out last night to finish the tree house I told you about…I'm probably grounded from La Push when dad gets home from his trip, so I thought I'd visit now, before my prison sentence." I don't continue talking but instead grab her arm and give her a visual replay with my "gift".

She pauses, her eyes going blank as she "watches". Once I'm done, I let my hand fall.

"I'm still not use to that." She notes, and I smile.

We talk some more, catching up on life. She tells me about her freshmen year at the reserve's only high school, and I tell her how home school is going so far. Both of us relieved summer vacation will be soon upon us.

We both grab a bowl of cereal and are watching Saturday morning cartoons when her mom gets up and goes to work.

A little while after that there is a knock at the door.

I sigh, bracing for Jacob to break down the door and drag me home like he usually does, but it doesn't happen.

Instead, Amanda gets up, -still wrapped in her matching giant fuzzy blanket, similar to mine, that I got her for her last birthday- and opens the door for Brady, one of Sam's wolves, and Amanda's cousin. Collin, his best friend, and another werewolf, also follows in after him.

"Nessie, just to let you know Jacob's giving you 20 more minutes." Brady announces, plopping down on the nearby lazy chair like he owns the place. He then grabs the open cereal box sitting on the coffee table and pours himself a huge helping into his mouth, sans bowl or milk, all dry. Collin stands behind the chair, arms crossed and tense like he is waiting for a non existent fight with an army of new borns, clearly not use to, and very uncomfortable, being in Amanda's home. Amanda meanwhile, blushes, and looks everywhere except at Collin.

I ignore Amanda's cousin and crush, and kick my feet in the air angrily, sulking like a child. I then slide off the couch to the floor, exasperated. The curls of my hair flop into my face like a mop as I pout.

"I never get any time here anymoreee." I whine to no one in particular, brushing my hair back in frustration with my hand. Amanda pats my arm in comfort.

"I'll come visit you in Forks during summer break." she promises.

"Sure, sure." I agree, and I get up to leave early. Knowing Jacob, I have 10 minutes, not 20 like Brady says. Seriously, sometimes Jacob worries worse than my own mom.

I stuff Mr. Snuffles back into my backpack, and pull my bag over my shoulder before leaving the house with a new record of 5 minutes tops...

Jacob lays across the ground in his wolf form, waiting in front of the house as he always does, lounging like he doesn't have a care in the world. Brady's latest idol in the flesh, I mean fur.

I sigh and trudge my way slowly over to the giant russet wolf who is my only guy best friend, and who I've known since I could talk.

"I know, I know" I tell him, "I can't go running off into the woods without you or mom's permission, we are no longer building the tree house cause it's dangerous, and I'm grounded for a week."

Jacob shakes his head.

"A month?"

He nods, and I sigh again as I climb onto his back and grab a hold of his fur.

"Being grounded sucks". I think to him with my power. He chuckles as he takes off and heads for home.

(Will continue later, please review, and comment. I would love to improve my writing. My next chapter I am thinking of Nessie going to summer camp. Of course Jacob, Edward and Bella will be spending the whole time watching over her while she is there, but she doesn't know that in the chapter. It's much like the Eclipse book and their time in the tent, except they are all bickering about whether to take her out early and go home, lol. I can imagine all 3 sitting in the rain and grumbling to themselves about the whole situation. Chuckles.)
