"Amazing Recovery Made by Reimu Hakurei," declared the paper.
Reimu took a good look at Aya who had just brought her a draft of her most recent paper. The tengu reporter had been quite literally dragged down to the underworld by Suika and Yuugi who forced her to discreetly watch Reimu babysit several youkai children and write her honest opinions and thoughts.
The once proud reporter was now stuck underneath two very powerful oni who were using her as a mat since there were only three chairs in the room which were being used by Reimu, Satori, and Koishi. Whether this was intentional or not, Reimu would never know.
"So Aya, care to explain the lies you've been writing as of last week?" asked Reimu.
The tengu muffled several protests before Satori signaled for Suika to get off.
"It's not my fault!" denied the reporter. "Kanako and Suwako approached me with a threat. You know how much my newspaper business means to me!"
Reimu sighed while Satori gave an understanding nod.
"Seems like your competition is quite persuasive," commented the mind reading youkai. "Destroying her business would also mean destroying her home and place in tengu society. Moving out is difficult as who would want a Tengu like her anyways."
Reimu sighed while Suika sat back on Aya, to the helpless crow tengu reporter's protests.
"I have one solution but I doubt it will work."
"And that is?" asked Satori.
"Kosuzu! Don't forget, we've got children coming at 4!"
"Got it mom!"
A young girl no older than 16 years bounced through the shelves placing book after book until she heard some footsteps.
"Customers! Oh dear and I'm not ready. I hope it's Akyuu or someone unimportant."
Kosuzu ran around to and fro in a panic when the curtains and door slid open to reveal Reimu Hakurei and Aya Shameimaru.
"Oh no. Am I in trouble?" asked Kosuzu. "Have I been caught?"
Reimu gave the bookstore worker a reassuring smile while Aya giggled.
"Not yet," replied the shrine maiden. "I know for a fact that you and Aya are business partners and that you are a bit friendly towards youkai. Normally, this would mean a strong lecture and warning but…"
"EHHHHH!" yelled Kosuzu. "No! I've been had!"
The girl collapsed on the floor with her hands held out in a prayer as if she were hoping for God to magically erase her troubles.
Reimu sighed as she walked over to Kosuzu and placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
"Relax. Aya and I are not here for that. We're here because we need your help."
"My help?" asked Kosuzu.
Reimu nodded as she helped Kosuzu onto a nearby chair.
"The Moriya Shrine has been making threats to Aya in order to get her to write articles that favor their babysitting business even making up lies about it."
"Oh," replied Kosuzu. "So that's why Hatate's been writing rumors about Keine's school. She asked me to put some of her papers on sale last week and I turned her down."
"Yeah well, since you and Aya are pretty close and on good terms, can I trust you to let Aya make your place her headquarters and nest?" asked Reimu. "That way, she won't have to deal with the Moriya Shrine's constant threats and can keep supplying you material to sell at your store."
"No problem though I do have to ask my parents first," replied Kosuzu. "I don't mind youkai but most human villagers including my parents have a very traditional response to youkai. Even Mamizou and Reisen have a hard time talking with others-"
The bookstore girl covered her mouth upon realizing what she was saying.
"Oops."
"No worries," informed Reimu. "If anything, I won't tell anyone. Besides, I only go after youkai that cause trouble."
Kosuzu seemed to calm down upon hearing this as she sat down looking a bit more composed than before.
"Alright then. I'll think of something. In the meantime though, Keine wanted to let you know that her school's having financial trouble due to many parents canceling their sending their kids to the Moriya shrine daycare."
"What?" asked Reimu. "I thought the Moriya shrine only did 7-14."
"Not anymore," informed Kosuzu. She held out a familiar looking poster to Reimu who read the new age range outloud.
"2 months to 14 now? Sheesh! That's a really high age range."
Aya nodded as she began taking notes.
"I have an idea but you're gonna have to convince Keine to meet up with me," commented Aya. "I need to get some details on how Keine's school works and how they get their funding."
"I'll take care of that Aya. You need to lay low with Hatate for now," informed Reimu. "Also, let me know how your parents react to Aya and what you told them. If anything goes wrong, I'll take care of it."
"Alright then," replied Kosuzu. "Just don't be surprised if you see Tengu reading stories to children."
With that Reimu left while Kosuzu and Aya began making their plan.
Moments later though, Mokou walked in with a brand new set of clothes for the bookstore worker.
"I'm sorry for the prank Kaguya and Star pulled. Please accept these replacements."
"You saw?"
Mokou nodded before bowing and leaving. "You're not the only one. Don't worry about it."
Keine sighed as she looked at her remaining students. Of the original class of 54 students, only 5 remained while the rest had quietly canceled and withdrew from her school. Of the original 9 classes she taught, only one remained and even worse, the school's funding was beginning to run out due to the lack of students.
"If this keeps up, these kids won't have a place to learn any more and I'll be out of a job."
The half-human and half-hataku watched as her 5 students handed in their homework before continuing her lesson. An hour later, Keine watched as the 5 students walked back home without any homework.
At this point, assigning such would be pointless especially since the students probably won't be turning it in that week. With another sigh, Keine got ready to lock up the school but felt someone wrap themselves around her waist.
"Tokiko, did you have fun with Rinnosuke today?" asked the teacher.
The bird youkai nodded and snuggled her head into Keine's waist. With a smile the teacher lifted her daughter up and began carrying her home.
"Mama, papa said he can't take care of me tomorrow and has to go to the village to meet with Kirisame."
"That's alright. I'll find someone sweetie."
Internally Keine sighed. Her problems had just got a whole lot worse.
As she entered her home and set her child down on the futon, Keine looked at the babysitting posters she had recovered.
Moriya shrine was a good option as it was cheaper and had a higher age range but they only did human children.
She had tried to ask them the other day but was immediately refused by Sanae who made it clear that youkai were not welcome.
She knew she could ask Marisa for help but considering the fact that Marisa already had her hands full with three adorable little fairies, Keine knew that she would just be inconveniencing the young witch.
Reimu on the other hand, was questionable to say the least with all the rumors going around about her childcare abilities. Keine had already witnessed it first hand and she had to admit, Reimu made a good babysitter for youkai but still she wasn't too sure if Reimu should handle another kid after that broken leg. Not to mention, 2000 yen was quite a lot for someone like her, especially now that she had less students.
Tokiko also didn't have a good impression of her as she notoriously remembered the miko as the person who robbed her of her books which were now a part of Rinnosuke's merchandise. Thankfully, he hadn't sold them yet but the fact that he still considered it merchandise was concerning for Keine.
That being said, times were tough and there was no way Keine could bring Tokiko to her school. Doing that would get her fired on the spot and no one in their right mind would bring a youkai to a place full of humans. But she still needed someone to watch over her child and the last time she had left Tokiko alone at home, the girl cried until Keine came back after her first class to check on her.
The sight was more than enough to tell Keine that Tokiko should not be left alone lest she wanted the neighbors to come in and unintentionally discover her secret adopted youkai child. Nonetheless, Reimu babysat youkai and with no other option remaining, Keine decided to head to her shrine once Tokiko was asleep with the poster in hand.
Reimu was waiting for Keine's return to her schoolhouse. The teacher had yet to lock up the place and for the most part, the place was practically empty save for the several members of Akyuu's family who owned the school.
Almost 10 minutes had passed when Akyuu appeared to lock up the school.
"Reimu, I'm gonna lock up the place. Is there anything you want to do at the last minute?" asked the young chronicler.
"No. I'm just waiting for Keine. I heard about her current situation and I want to help out."
Akyuu gave Reimu a skeptical look before locking the door and pointing Reimu towards Keine's home.
"She's either at home or at your shrine. Said something about needing some help."
"Thanks!"
With that, Reimu flew back towards her shrine while Akyuu sighed and finished the lockup.
"What are we going to do about the lack of children?"
The silence was killing Ryusei. One moment, he had been dropping off another shipment of fumo dolls and then the next, he had been hiding from the teacher who he could swear was looking at him despite being invisible.
Either his symbolizer wasn't working or this teacher's instincts were way above the average humans. As he tried his best to remain still, Keine began to move towards him. Instinctively, his hand went towards his katana or where it used to be.
Ever since he had lost his sword, Master Cross really tore him a new one and worse, his most trusted blacksmith, Kaito, had the next two months completely booked and was taking a well needed vacation once those months were done so there was no way he was getting a replacement any time soon. Upon realizing this, his hand went back to his symbolizer which he readied in case he needed to make a portal.
To his relief though, Reimu showed up moments before he could make a single stroke and pulled Keine's attention away from him.
"Hi Keine! Fancy seeing you here!"
"I wish I could say the same."
Reimu sat down at her table and signaled for Keine to join her. Hesitantly, the teacher moved over and upon taking her seat at the table, brought out Reimu's ad.
"Reimu. I really don't want to do this but I've got no choice," started Keine. "I need you to babysit Tokiko."
Reimu gave her a bored look before pushing the poster to Keine.
"How bad?"
"Excuse me?" asked Keine. "Are you-"
"Yes I am aware of your situation. Kosuzu told me earlier today," cutoff Reimu. "And in case you've been wondering, I've been down in the underworld taking on requests for the past month. I'm back up here now-"
"Reimu!"
The shrine maiden and the teacher's discussion was cut off by a fairy which flew into her shrine seemingly out of nowhere. Instinctively, Reimu caught the little child whom she recognized all too well.
"Daiyousei! Is-"
"I missed you!"
Reimu smiled and stroked the green hair greater fairy in her arms. In response, Daiyousei nuzzled her head into the motherly shrine maiden's chest and clung onto her as if she was going to disappear. Once the fairy had fallen asleep in her arms, Reimu turned back to Keine to address the current matter at hand.
"So as I was saying, how bad is the school situation?" asked Reimu.
Keine sighed again as she recalled all the rejection and cancellation letters she had received. All of which had something to do with the Moriya Shrine's babysitting which was cheaper than her school. Additionally, there was also a very fat chance of her being laid off as almost all her coworkers had been discharged due to the lack of students and funding. No doubt, she was the next in line unless something changed.
"Bad is a terrible understatement," Keine finally said. "More like, desolate. Thanks to the Moriya Shrine's babysitting, we've got no kids left to watch over and teach. I'm lucky to still have 5 students but practically everyone's gone."
"And you also have 5 kids, right?" asked Reimu.
"About 4 really," replied Keine. "Marisa's fairies and Tokiko are the only ones who need babysitting but Marisa's already got her kids taken care of so I only need to deal with Tokiko."
Reimu sighed. The situation was certainly going to be more difficult than she imagined.
"Alright, so Tokiko's the only one who needs child care," noted Reimu. "I can take care of that free of charge."
"Really?" asked Keine.
Reimu nodded and got out a calendar and paintbrush.
"What day do you need me to start?" asked Reimu.
"Monday in the morning. I'll give you a list of things regarding Tokiko later," informed Keine.
"Alright then. In the meantime, we need to figure out how to keep your school open," declared Reimu. "By chance, are you familiar with Aya?"
