I always thought it strange, Charlie being a cop, yet everything that happened flew right over his cop's radar.

CAP!!!

Either he was a bad cop or a bad father.

So this is a longer chapter. Charlie just wouldn't shut the fuck up. He was determined to prove he ain't a bad cop or father. I finally had to just cut the fucker off or he'd still be yapping away.

I hated that little smug bastard from the first time I laid eyes on the kid. I hated the way he and his little sister would gaslight my kid into doing what they wanted.

I'm a small town cop, not a small minded idiot.

Every time Bella was with this jerk for longer than a couple of hours, she came back injured.

I asked her repeatedly was he hurting her. She repeatedly told me no. I know she was being truthful. He wasn't physically hurting her, but there was something she wasn't telling me. I can always tell when I'm being lied to. I guess it's all the years of being a cop.

First, something wasn't right about that van incident. Nobody I questioned could tell me with any surety what happened. The only thing that was consistent was that kid Crowley came sliding in his van towards Bells. I even looked at the footage from the security cameras in the schools parking lot. Somehow, the footage cut out just as the van came into view. Even stranger, was that the camera came back online with all the kids gathered around Bells and Crowley. All the kids except the Cullen kids.

Bella claims the kid saved her from being crushed by the van. I don't see how when at the time the van came into view, the bastard was on the other side of the parking lot with his other siblings. The footage cuts out, then their nowhere to be seen.

Then there was the baseball incident. Not like I didn't see that one coming. Though, it ended differently than I expected. Bella and anything that requires hand to eye coordination, running, hell, walking in general is a recipe for disaster. The problem is she's not physically active enough. She's just like me when I was a kid.

It wasn't until I went to the police academy, that I broke out of my klutziness. But, I digress.

I didn't know at the time what he'd done to her or said to her to make her want to go back to Phoenix. It wasn't like her mom was still there. She said she was going to visit her friends for a few days after storming back into the house after her date with Egbert, Edwin, whatever his name is. He'll always be little shit to me.

Then, two days later, I get a call. She's in a hospital in Phoenix. I fly out the next day, and surprise, (not) there's the little shit and Carlisle waiting for me at the airport.

They give me some shoddy crap about her falling down the stairs at their hotel, blah, blah, blah.

My concern at the time was Bella. On the way to the hospital, I inquire as to why their even here. Carlisle gives me some excuse about Egbert being sorry for upsetting her and wanting to apologize. Ever heard of a phone, dipshit. Or better yet how about you wait 'til she gets back to Forks. You'll see her in school.

But what surprised me the most was while dipshit was upset, it was Carlisle, that was almost inconsolable. I had to file that away for later. So, I kept quiet after that and just sat back and observed.

While I know Carlisle is a doctor, and would be concerned for her as a patient, he never left her side. I didn't get it. The way he looked at her, as if she hung the moon and stars for him.

"Is there something going on between you and my daughter?" I finally asked point blank.

"Absolutely not!" he replied, appalled. "I do, however, care for Isabella, as if she were one of my own." There was much truth in that statement.

I asked where was Egbert. He chuckled a little and said he'd sent him back to Forks. When I asked where was Bella's truck, there was the lie. He visibly stiffened before he replied, "I was under the impression Isabella flew here." He then excused himself, asking if I'd like a coffee when he returned. I accepted his offer.

As soon as he left, I pulled out my phone and called one of my deputies to check if Bella's truck was in long term parking at Port Angeles Airport.

Carlisle returned shortly with two coffees. He then told me he was going to do some paperwork, so I could have time with Bells. Before he left, I asked what hotel they were staying. He gave me the name of the hotel near the airport. I told him I would probably get a room there as well so I could freshen up and get some sleep. He gave me a small smile, and a nod, and left the room.

While he was gone, I called and made a reservation at the hotel.

About an hour later, I got a call from my deputy stating, in fact, Bella's truck was in long-term parking. As I was about to make another inquiry from Marks, I saw that Bella was waking up. I told Marks I'd call him later.

Bella was pulling at the oxygen tube in her nose. I stayed her hand and rang the bell for her nurse.

"Daddy? What are you doing here? Where am I? Where's Edward?" Ah, so that's the little shits name. Her voice was raspy from disuse. I poured her some water and helped her drink.

"Ah, Isabella, you're finally awake," Carlisle said as he rushed into the room

"Where's Edward?" Bella again, inquired.

"Chief Swan, why don't you go ahead to the hotel and freshen up now that Isabella is awake. I would like to examine her to make sure everything is healing properly. You may take my rental." He pulled the keys from his pocket and handed them to me.

Sure, why not. That way I can do my own investigation.

Once I got to the hotel and checked in. I pulled out my badge and inquired about the accident that happened a few days ago, and if I could see the incident report. They looked at me as if I'd grown a second head.

"So you're telling me a girl, my daughter tripped down two flights of stairs, went through a window, and you have no knowledge of it? You also have no incident report?"

"I assure you, Chief Swan, if such an incident occurred, we would have a report of it," the manager informed me. I thanked the nice lady, took my room keycard and went up to my room. I ordered room service, then went to take a shower.

After getting out of the shower, there was a knock on the door. Must be room service.

While I sat and ate, I was thinking. I'd need a warrant to be able to look at their security footage. So, I called Deputy Marks and got him started on securing a search warrant.

I was puzzled how a small girl like Bella could go through a plate glass window. I could see her running into it and possibly having a goose egg on her head. More than likely, a concussion. Bella looked like she'd been beat to hell and back.

There was, however, her falling down two flights of stairs.

I got dressed and decided to do my own investigation.

I left my room and found the stairwell. As I entered the stairwell, I noticed there were no windows. I was on the fifth floor. I descended the stairs to the lobby.

I then went to the elevator and pressed the button to go back up. As I'm waiting for the elevator, I notice the beautiful atrium. On the other side of the atrium is a staircase.

While I'm waiting for the elevator, I pull out my phone and take a picture of the atrium and staircase.

Once the elevator arrived, I get on and as I press the button for my floor, I see there are twenty floors in this hotel. I get off on my floor and pull out my phone as I walk over to where the staircase is on my floor.

"Dr. Cullen speaking," Carlisle answered.

"Charlie here, Carlisle. How's Bella?" I ask.

"Remarkably well, given the circumstances. She's eaten, and is now resting again." He explained.

"That's great. Here's the thing. I asked the hotel for a copy of the incident report, but they don't seem to have one," I told him.

"How odd. Well, I happened to have a copy of it, if you would like to see it," I thought he might.

"Good, good. I'm headed back to the hospital, shortly. One more thing, what floor are you guys on?"

"We're on the top floor, the penthouse. Why do you ask?" I rolled my eyes. Of course, you are. I think to myself. I can't get on that floor without a special key for the elevator. No worries.

"Oh, I was just curious," I replied. "I'll see you in a bit." I say before disconnecting the call.

I take the elevator to the nineteen floor. I get off and walk down the stairs towards the atrium. It's a glass enclosed staircase.

Sure enough, there is a plate of glass missing. I decide my investigation is complete. For now. I will continue once I get the search warrant for the security footage.

I just want anything to keep that little shit away from my daughter.

Back in Forks

Once we get back to Forks, I'm pretty much able to keep the little shit away from Bells. Except now I've got his little sister flitting around my house, running roughshod over Bella. She even talked her into going to the prom, even though she's still in a cast.

Then there's that damn birthday party.

I knew something had gone terribly wrong the minute she stepped foot back into this house.

Again, the dynamic duo ran roughshod over her with a birthday party she didn't even want.

All I want is for her to be happy. I know she's had a rough life. Trust me, if I'd known how bad she had it with Renée, I would have had her back with me. If she'd just open up to me. All I ever hear from her is 'No, it's fine, daddy.'

I think she saw the Cullen's as that perfect family she never had, until they weren't.

They welcomed her into their family, until they left her high and dry without a fuck you bye.

I'd heard they just up and left town through the Forks gossip train, namely Beth Stanley from the bank, and Linda Newton from the sporting goods store where Bella worked.

I wanted to be there for her when she got out of school. But I got called out on a missing hiker report. By the time I got home Bella's truck was in the driveway, but her school bag was still in it.

I went into the house, calling Bella's name, but she didn't answer back. I went upstairs thinking maybe she cried herself to sleep, but she wasn't there.

I went back downstairs to grab a beer when I saw a note on the kitchen table; 'Went for a walk in the woods with Edward.'

THE FUCK?!

His family is supposedly gone, so why is the little shit still here? And why has he taken Bella in the woods? For what? To break up with her? He could have done that bullshit in the driveway.

As I run upstairs to get my shotgun, I hear the backdoor open and close.

I meet Bella on the stairs, shotgun in hand.

Her sad face looked up at me. But then she gives me a little smirk and a raised eyebrow.

"Trust me, Daddy, he's not worth it," she says as she pats me on the shoulder.

As she tries to pass me on the stairs, I stop her. "Did you get to say goodbye to the others?"

That's when she broke down in my arms.

"It's all my fault, Daddy." She kept saying over and over.

I finally coaxed her up the stairs and into her room. I asked if she was hungry, she shook her head, no. The only things I know how to cook are bacon and scrambled eggs, but hey.

I made her some sleepy time tea. And placed a glass of water on her nightstand.

She was fine, for the most part. She still cried often. But she was functioning as an adult after their first breakup.

She always talked in her sleep. I'd hear her mumble Carlisle name as she napped on the sofa.

I finally decided to ask her. "Honey, was there something going on between you and Carlisle?" Her eyes nearly bugged out of her head.

"Not like you're thinking, Daddy. He was never inappropriate with me, but I crossed the line on my birthday. I kissed him," she whispered the last part so low I almost missed it. She then placed both hands over her face and started bawling. She told me how she tripped over the table and cut her arm on glass. She showed me the scar on her arm where he stitched her up. How she misread the scene and she kissed him. At first, he kissed her back but then pushed her away. He told her he'd wanted to do that for a while.

"But he's too much of a gentleman, Daddy. I'm a slut like Renéeeeee!" she was bawling again. "That's why they left. That's why he left."

I gathered her up in my arms. "Don't ever say that. You're not a slut, kiddo. You may have bad judgment, but you're not a slut, never a slut."

"But what am I supposed to do? I love him, Daddy." OH GOD.

"I don't know, sweet pea. But if it's any consolation, I think he loves you back." That only brought on more tears. I guess not.

Another month or so and Esme Cullen showed up in my police station.
