A/N: Hey, sorry about the delay. Today was hectic. But it's out now. Enjoy! And please review.
Chapter 10
"Oh, okay."
You don't understand it, but you have a feeling that something is off with this situation. Was Newt hiding something? If so, what? Why? You shake it away, hoping it's nothing. Newt wouldn't lie to you.
"You wanna go get lunch?"
"Sure, I'm bloody starving."
Newt puts his gardening tools away and the two of you make your way to the Kitchen.
It's somewhat awkward, as if Newt wanted to tell you something but wasn't sure how to. He must know, you tell yourself, I have to tell him now before it's too late or anything else happens.
You both turn to each other at the same time and speak in chorus,
"I have to tell you something."
You giggle and Newt chuckles, the two of you do it again,
"You go first."
Newt holds his finger up and says, "You go first."
You nod and open your mouth to speak but Thomas comes running up before you can even get a sound out. He's out of breath, panting, "Newt, we found, Gally."
Newt's eyes widen and he says, "Please, Y/N, hold that thought and wait here. I need to go sort this out."
You nod and he runs after Thomas. After waiting for what you thought was a long enough to be safe, you run after them. You climb up in a tree and hide while you spy on them. Two boys are holding spears and pointing them defensively as Newt and Thomas stand behind them.
"Gally," Newt says, softly yet sternly, "it's okay, we can work this out. Just put the knife down."
"No!"
Your eyes follow the voice and, sure enough, Gally is in front of the quadrant of boys with a knife in front of him.
"I didn't do it, I swear."
"Gally, you need to come with us so we can sort this out," Newt says calmly with his hands raised in peace. You marvel at him again, how he can stay so calm in a situation like this.
"No! You're just gonna lock me up and then banish me! I'm not dying for something I didn't do!"
Gally's reaction is strange to you. For some reason you know that when persistently interrogating someone, if they're innocent they get mad and sometimes violent, but if they're guilty they don't become sad but they may start crying and pleading with you. Gally was definitely acting as if he was innocent. Not sure if you're making the right move, you climb down the tree and carefully walk to Newt with your right hand up in some sort of surrender.
"Y/N! What are you doing? I told you to stay there."
You put your arm down and counter his argument, "Yeah, well, I wanted to come see, make sure everything was alright."
Great, you tell yourself stupidly, the courts would definitely take that. You again couldn't help but wonder what happened to your memory. How do you know interrogation tactics, or saying that you feel like you've said thousands of times yet you can't recall when last you did.
"Y/N," Newt snapped you out of your thoughts, "why are you here?"
You hesitate a bit before saying, "Gally didn't do it!"
"What but you said—"
"I know, but I was delirious, tired, and his face was the last one I saw. Besides you guys are friends you've been here three years together and you want to believe me over him?"
"Well, kind of."
You pause, Aw, Newt would take my word over someone he's known for three years. You smile but quickly get serious again, "You said the creators like to play tricks on you guys sometimes. Maybe this is just another one."
"Y/N, you can't accuse someone of trying to kill you and then change your mind like that," he snaps his fingers, "when we find them."
"Newt," you look him in the eyes and get lost, you stop talking for a bit and you didn't believe it to be possible but you fall in love with him even more. "Newt, I'm sorry. I know what I said, and I know that Gally is genuinely angry because he didn't do it. If it makes you feel better, you can arrest him, or whatever you call it here, until we can work this out."
Newt looks between you and Gally, hesitating extra long on Gally's scared and angered face, he looks at you again and sighs,
"Alright we'll keep him in the Slammer until we find out what exactly happened."
He motions to the other boys to take Gally to a tiny, square, concrete building that you guess is the "Slammer." You and Thomas follow Newt as he heads to the Homestead to talk to Alby. Newt tells the two of you to wait outside.
"And I mean it," he says sternly. He's so serious and you can tell he's in a bad mood so just nod and do the sensible thing, wait.
About 20 minutes later you're laying on the ground on your back, your legs propped up against the outside wall of the building.
"Agh! This is sooo boring," you moan.
Thomas who is sitting on the steps next to you laughs and looks down at you, "Yeah, who'd have thought it would take Newt this long to tell Alby that we found Gally."
"You'd think Alby would want to see him immediately. I hope there's nothing wrong."
"Maybe they're just talking about you and the note."
You sit up and look at him as if you could crack him open with your stare and answers would come spilling out.
"What note?"
Thomas's eyes widen in shock and he quietly gasps, "No. I thought you knew. I shouldn't have said anything."
He looks down at his bare wrist and says, "I, uh… I have to go, um, do… something."
He stands up and rushes away. You stand up to go after him and demand answers but the door opens behind you and you turn around to see Newt. He's kind of smiling but you can tell it's fake, he looks like he has something on his mind.
You look at him, hoping the anger is clear in your glare, your fists are clenched and feel a sort of betrayed feeling build up inside of you, "Tell me about the note."
