When he came out of stone in the next night, Brooklyn now decided it was the right time to travel out of Viridian City and venture towards Pewter City, wanting to get to his first gym battle as quickly as possible.
He glided away over the town, getting close to a dense forest that would take two days of walking on foot but hoping for Brooklyn just a night's glide or so.
Brooklyn soared in the wind, ensuring his Pokemon were safe in his pouch since he didn't want to lose any of them, noting how far away the end of the woods was. When it got close to sunrise, Brook eventually decided to halt for a bit to eat and then travel onward. He had been unaware that Ash and Misty had earlier faced Team Rocket who tried stealing his Pikachu, wondering if he would find anymore new Pokemon.
The red gargoyle landed near a tree in the middle of the wood, panting a little from how achy his wings were, taking out some food for himself. Nurse Joy had given him special food for his Pokemon too, glad to be near a river so his Magikarp could swim for a while, spotting all sorts of bug Pokemon around too.
One worm with a horn caught his eyes. Brooklyn opened his Pokedex and lifted it up to it. "Weedle, this bug Pokemon's horn packs a powerful sting and it's final form is a Beedril, even more dangerous than a Weedle."
Brooklyn then knew he would probably desire to avoid any kinds of Beedrill lurking around, wrapping his wings around himself and calling out some of his Pokemon, Charmander, Spearow and Magikarp appearing out of their Pokeballs.
Charmander jumped about. "Char!" He squeaked, after Magikarp landed happily into the river, chanting it's name. Brooklyn petted Charmander on the head, Spearow cawing out, her eyes spotting the food bag he had. "Here you go guys. We got a long way before we arrive in Pewter City." He offered, piling some up for them and tossing Magikarp a couple too who leapt up and ate the bits.
Brooklyn had to admit Charmander looked cute while eating his food, Spearow pecking at it until his ears picked up some noises that sounded like a distressed sound along with buzzing. Brook stood up, the Pokemon halting in their eating to listen too.
"Come on, guys. We gotta check this out." Brooklyn exclaimed, using his Pokeball to call Magikarp back in, while the other land Pokemon followed him in suit. "Spearow, can you find where the sound is coming from?"
Spearow cawed back at her trainer, soaring into the sky to find what the sound was, her sharp eyes darting about until the distressed noise came from a clearing ahead. Sqawking in alarm, Spearow flew back to alert Brooklyn who waited anxiously.
Brooklyn spotted his Spearow returning, his ears shot up in alert, Spearow cawing it's discovery. "What did you find girl?" Brook asked, Spearow flying back again, crying out to Brooklyn to follow her. Brook took to the sky after calling Charmander into the Pokeball. The buzzing grew louder and louder, the distressed noise getting louder too, Brooklyn's eyes rounding after entering a clearing; he couldn't believe what he saw.
It looked like a new Pokemon was getting attacked and surrounded by a swarm of Beedrill. The Pokemon was some kind of fox looking one with a red coat and six tails, whimpering from the Beedrill stinging it, making Brooklyn snarl in anger, not liking to see this, his eyes glowing white. "Get away from that Pokemon! Spearow, scatter them!" Roared Brooklyn, Spearow squawking viciously, diving down at the Beedrill, making the group scatter away, before soon turning on Spearow and Brooklyn.
Brooklyn paid them no mind, running over to the injured Pokemon. "Vul... Vulpix..." whimpered the fox Pokemon, still curled up, shielding its face with its six tails. At first Brooklyn tried to pet the Pokemon's fur but it felt terribly hot, like how any fire type Pokemon would feel. "Easy there, I want to help. Don't be scared." Brooklyn said softly, reminding himself of how he saved Charmander. This was another fire type he had been able to hopefully save, making Brooklyn grin from the memory. Maybe fire Pokemon were his calling.
The fox Pokemon looked at him, its eyes terrified though calming down from his soft voice, soon allowing Brooklyn to pet its fur. Brooklyn pulled out his Pokedex, pointing it at the Pokemon. "Vulpix. The fox Pokemon. Vulpix has 6 tails and has strong firepower."
The red gargoyle managed to pet Vulpix again. "So you're a Vulpix. Let's get away from these Beedrill so you can be safe. I can fix youâ oh boy!" Brook turned around, eyes popping from the Beedrill swarm coming in closer to them both.
Brooklyn took the weak Vulpix in his arms. "Stay away Beedrill!" He bellowed, pulling out his Charmander now. "Charmander, flamethrower!" Charmander jumped into position, shooting it's large flames at the big swarm, catching some of the Beedrill with it who all buzzed in pain, now flying away from the group. Spearow had been lucky not to have gotten hit by the flames.
"Vul… whimpered Vulpix, shaking in its rescuer's hold, Brooklyn seeing the wounds from the Beedrill's stingers. "You don't look too good. I can try to find help." Brooklyn said softly, Charmander tilting its head at the sight of an injured Pokemon. "Char?"
Brooklyn gazed at his first companion. "We gotta help this Vulpix or the poison will kill him." He told Charmander, wondering if he would even make it to the Pokemon center in Pewter until a voice came from the trees.
"Hold it right there, Pokemon trainer! I saw you take on that swarm and I believe you can be a rightful competitor!" It was a male's voice which irritated Brooklyn.
"I don't have time for this, whoever you are! If you know how to heal Pokemon this Vulpix I saved is hurt!" He roared, keeping Vulpix close until whoever was talking to him stepped out, Brooklyn tilting his head.
The newcomer was a strange young teenager who looked like he wore samurai attire, a challenged look on his features until seeing the Vulpix. His expressions softened. "Injured, you say? Well, I suppose me the Samurai could help. You just follow me to my cabin, I have something for the Vulpix."
Brooklyn glared more at the Samurai. "How can I trust you?" Samurai just grinned. "Then I wouldn't have offered to help, I would've just challenged you to a Pokemon match."
Those words at the end made his ears twitch. "If you can heal the Vulpix, I can probably have a match with you to warm up for the gym."
Samurai grinned and nodded. "Good luck with it, since so far I've battled so many experienced trainers more experienced than you even if you have saved a Vulpix."
Brooklyn's beak frowned at that. "But, how come you aren't freaked out by my appearance and that I'm not human?"
Samurai shrugged. "From living in these woods I suppose. And you not being a human training Pokemon is probably the most interesting thing by far."
The former second wound up being a little bit more assured from those words, placing Vulpix down who whined again, Samurai looking him over. "I got some medicine that I use for my Pokemon to help them whenever they're hurt. Mostly have a Pincer and a Metapod." He grabbed a jar off of his shelf, opening it and pulling out some of the paste, rubbing it gently on a sting in Vulpix's skin.
Vulpix squeaked when feeling the goop on him, Brooklyn trying to calm him down. "Easy. We're still helping you. Please don't move or you'll make it worse." Brooklyn murmured, stroking Vulpix's head, Vulpix giving him a sad look, before eventually licking his hand which surprised the red gargoyle but he welcomed the friendly gesture.
The Samurai grinned from the sight while applying wounds. "The Vulpix seems to really take to you. Maybe it can go with you on your journey."
Brooklyn wouldn't mind having another Pokemon friend along. At least with his Pokemon he wasn't alone on his journey. "That wouldn't be too bad to have more firepower." He stated with a grin while eventually seeing the sunlight starting to come, and his bracelet buzzing a little.
It caught the attention of the Samurai. "What's going on?" He asked while Brooklyn petted Vulpix once more before going to a window. "Us gargoyles have the ability to change into stone so it is time for me to do that, since the solar energy helps rejuvinate my stamina." Brooklyn explained the best he could.
Samurai then nodded. "I'll ensure that Vulpix is ok while you're asleep, as long as you're awake before sunset."
Brooklyn adjusted his bracelet. "I should since this bracelet I got from a trickster named Puck in my world. It will help me know when to awaken from stone sleep." He then turned to Vulpix who glanced at him. "Sleep well little one. I'll be awake soon." Brook smiled at his new Pokemon before soon his skin began turning, Saumrai gazing in amazement since he's never seen anyone or anything turn to stone naturally like that, Brooklyn taking his usual position before soon now a complete statue.
Vulpix whined, pawing weakly at the foot of Brooklyn's frozen form after getting up weakly, the Samurai pulling Vulpix back. "Sleep now, you should feel better when he's awake again."
The fox Pokemon soon gave in, curling up to snooze away the day while Samurai kept his eye out for the Beedrill and for more Pokemon trainers that came his way, Ash and Misty still traveling through the fields close to the forest.
…..
When at last it was sunset once more; Brooklyn's bracelet beeped and he roared, the stone crackling as he broke free of it which woke up Vulpix. Brook turned around to see his new friend, smiling again. "Good evening buddy. You look much better."
The Samurai himself wondered how the gargoyles could stand turning to stone all the time like this, now figuring Brooklyn was probably ready for a battle while Vulpix leapt into his arms, even licking him, making Brooklyn laugh, petting his head.
"I suppose you would like to have a match with me now that you're up? I challenged every single Pokemon trainer, trying to find the very best out of all of them. Let's see how you hold up against me."
Brooklyn narrowed his eyes but grinned. "You're on!" He said, strapping his Pokeballs back onto his loincloth, as the two stepped outside.
The two challengers faced each other. Brooklyn's heart thudded from the idea of having his very first Pokemon battle and with this guy. Samurai smirked. "We use two Pokemon each, and no time limits! Begin!" He pulled out a Pokeball. "Pincer, I choose you!"
A large brown insect Pokemon appeared, flexing it's pincers threateningly. Brook pulled out his Pokedex. "Pincer. This Pokemon has very strong pincers that can be used the most in battles."
He put his Pokedex away. "Hm. A tough one, huh? Then; Charmander! I choose you!" Roared Brook, throwing one of his balls as well, Charmander coming out. "Char!"
Samurai liked the odds of this trainer. "Well, a little Charmander. This shouldn't take too long. "Pincer, squeeze it with your pincers!" He yelled, pointing. Pincer charged, ready to grasp Charmander with it.
Brooklyn noticed that. "Charmander, dodge and give it a tackle attack!" He shouted too, recalling in his Pokedex that Charmander knew tackle besides flamethrower. Charmander cried out when dodging, then next ramming his head into Pincer, sending the rival flying back, looking rather dizzy.
The Samurai frowned. "Pincer, are you ok?" His Pokemon moaned. "Pin… cer…" Now it seemed unable to fight, Samurai calling it back into its Pokeball.
Charmander was panting, since this was it's first real fight he was exhausted. Brooklyn called him back in. "Charmander, return! You can rest now."
The red gargoyle next eyed Samurai carefully, wondering what Pokemon he would choose next. Samurai grinned more. "Metapod, I choose you!"
A strange looking Pokemon that looked like some kind of chrysalis came out. "Metapod!" Brook pulled out his Pokedex again. "Metapod, the chrysalis Pokemon, the evolved form of Caterpie. It uses Harden as one of it's fighting moves."
Alright then. If this one is an insect, then maybe I should chooseâ Brook decided, taking Spearow out. "Spearow!"
Spearow shrilled, diving down towards Metapod. Samurai glared. "Metapod, use harden!" Brooklyn saw Metapod's shell glow for a moment before suddenly looking quite hard and sturdy.
"Use slash attack Spearow!" Brooklyn roared, Spearow cawing, as she tried to use her talons to scratch at Metapod but then squawked in pain as the shell broke one of her talons, making Spearow fall to the ground. "No!" Brook gasped, Spearow struggling to get up but only looking winded. He then thought of another since most bird Pokemon knew this. "Spearow, use gust attack!"
Spearow screeched, flying into the air again, flapping her wings as hard as possible, Metapod's eyes rounding when feeling itself flying off the ground, slamming into the Samurai who grunted in agony from the hard shell, falling to the ground. Brooklyn grinned. They were close to winning!
Metapod had lost it's harden ability, laying there while Spearow this time managed to pick it up, throwing Metapod into the air and having it fall to the ground again, eyes weak and dizzy.
The Samurai gritted his teeth that he lost again, his hands balled into fists. But he had to admit this gargoyle had guts. "Metapod, return." Samurai stated with a sigh. Brooklyn's tail twitched. "So… did we win?"
Samurai nodded. "Yes, Brooklyn. I believe you will probably do well in your upcoming gym battle. You have really well raised Pokemon."
Brook flushed, rubbing the back of his neck but took the compliment. "Um, thanks. And… and it was nice to meet you and thanks for helping me with Vulpix." He held out his hand, the Samurai taking it in a shake.
"Maybe we will both see each other again sometime," Samurai stated, Brooklyn nodding. He hoped so. Shouldering his bag, he called Vulpix into one of his spare Pokeballs and Spearow back into hers, waving the Samurai goodbye as he went on his way to Pewter City, taking to the skies again.
My writing will get more frequent again once we have our new high speed internet next Thursday. But Brooklyn now has had his first battle, and saves a Vulpix!
