"Let's get a sample of the demon so Molly and her group can find or make a Ward specific to them." Alex decided. "This one appeared to have no provocation for attacking Buffy and Faith, if there are others, they may act the same way. And damn, it stinks more than a vampire."
"I didn't think that was possible." Cordelia wrinkled her nose, the smell really was bad and it wasn't just because it was dead and starting to break down. This blue scaly thing just stank all by itself.
Jesse bent down to dip a piece of paper from his pocket in the congealing blood. "That should be enough for Molly and them to work their Magic." He said, dropping the piece of paper into a plastic baggy. "Besides the stench, I'm not seeing anything, Faith said it just attacked them, no warning and it wasn't carrying a weapon, right?" He glanced at Alex, who was crouched beside him.
"That's what she said." Alex confirmed. "Claws and strength, Faith said it took a lot to put it down and the taser was useless."
"That's a first." Cordelia commented. "So far we haven't encountered anything that the tasers can't stun long enough to destroy them. Either it's got an incredibly high pain tolerance or a very different nervous system. Either way, the police are going to have problems if they run into one too."
"I'm going to call your dad and let him know that." Alex decided. "There are units out patrolling right now and they could run into more of these things. They need to make sure they're armed with bullets." Charles Chase didn't pick up, so Alex left a message, if he'd known Charles had witnessed the attack from the observer's van, he'd have known Charles was already informing the police that the tasers didn't work against this new demon and making sure they had extra clips. The police didn't often have to use their guns in Sunnydale, but never patrolled without them.
"Guys, I think we might have a different issue." Aura called from several feet away. "I can track the smell of the blue demon, but I can't find another smell. The second demon Buffy and Faith saw doesn't seem to have any smell."
Alex and Jesse glanced at each other, while Cordelia walked over to Aura and inhaled deeply. "She's right, guys, all I smell is the blue demon and not just because it smells so bad. I can smell the trees, the grass, the dirt. Buffy and Faith, though their scents are fading and even a vampire that passed this way recently, probably before they got here, because I'm not seeing or smelling a vampire dust pile. So what demon doesn't smell?"
"One that doesn't exist." Alex decided. "What do you want to bet the second demon was the Council's solid state hologram? Smell wouldn't be something they'd consider a necessary component. Slayer's don't rely on their sense of smell, it's not enhanced in them, just sight and hearing. Which means the second demon was part of their test and given they don't smell of deceit, they didn't plan for the blue scaly one. Which means the blue one is the one we need to concentrate on. Right now, the possibility of there being more of them is more important than the Council's test and they'll probably agree with that assessment once they know about this attack."
"I'm pretty sure they already know." Jesse said softly. "On account of I just spotted a camera in the tree over Cordelia's shoulder." Alex looked at the spot and saw what Jesse had seen, a slight glint from a camera lens. Once you saw that, you could make out the shape of the slightly darker than its surrounding's camera. "Since the girls weren't hurt, they didn't intervene. They may just decide to see how we all handle this new demon situation instead."
"It still fits the parameters of their test." Cordelia agreed. "They did say they needed to study how she handled problems that come up. Well, let's give them a good show, shall we?"
"I'll call Faith and let her know what we've figured out," Alex said, "she can let Buffy know. And then we'll back track Blue's path and see if she's got a nest somewhere. It might help Willow and the others find information on them." He made the call as the others got a good inhalation of Blue's smell and as soon as he hung up, the Wolfblood teens, minus Jesse, who took the blood sample to Molly so she could get started on creating a Ward against it, began tracking Blue's path, eventually finding a cave near the outskirts of town and a whole lot of stench. Not willing to fight unknown demons on their own turf, let alone in the confined spaces of a cave, the teens quietly withdrew, having done all they could for now. But they kept a careful watch from a distance to see if any of the demons left the cave, perhaps to find out why their missing member hadn't returned.
