After Buffy called Willow and gave her a description of the two demons and Faith called Alex and asked him to check out the site himself, the two headed to Buffy's so she could get cleaned up from the demon blood that had splashed on her where Joyce offered Faith some hot chocolate, which she happily accepted.
"So, how are you doing, Faith?" Joyce asked. "If these tests prove helpful for Buffy then in a year or so you'll have reached the two year benchmark as well and they'll return to test you too. Probably with different, but similar tests."
"Well, the changes they recommended to what I eat are proving interesting. I thought they'd recommend more fruits and vegetables, instead meat is a big part of it. Alex joked and said it makes sense, Slayers are predators, like Wolfbloods, they have a persistent need for meat."
"So does Dawn, but she recognizes that fact because Charles and the others had already told her and she's a wolf too. And as for you and Buffy, I agree, when you think about it, it does make sense. Have you thought about talking to the Counselor they're arranging to come out here? You have to admit, you have issues they could help you with."
Faith didn't answer right away and then she said softly. "Talking to Diana wasn't easy at first, but she always listened. She could be strict, but not mean. I miss her."
"I know it's trite, but as long as you remember her, she's always with you. What she taught you, what you talked about. Her caring."
Faith smiled sadly. "I think she really did care, she kept telling me to look away, to not watch what Kakistos did to her. She didn't want me see him hurting her. I saw her die and after everything he'd done, she looked peaceful. She let all the pain go."
"She didn't want you to carry it, she already knew you carry plenty just from everything that had happened both before she became your Watcher and what this Kakistos did to her. She wanted you free of as much pain as possible. You had someone who cared, even if it was for a short time, it was long enough to make an impact. And now you're a part of us and we care too."
"It feels good to feel like you're part of something."
"Both humans and wolves are pack animals and willing to go quite far to protect any pack we're a part of and the individual members within it. Dawn is a sort of bridge between the Wolfbloods and the humans. Alex making her part of his pack, while not taking her away from our pack proves that. You make a fine addition to our pack."
"The Wolfbloods got us thinking like them." Faith smiled. "But it's not a bad way to think."
"No, it isn't." Joyce smiled and sipped her hot chocolate, Alex had called her a fierce eyed Lahini and Joyce had asked what that meant. Alex had told her it was a reference to Kipling's the Jungle Book. A Lahini was a female wolf, fierce and protective. It was a description Joyce liked.
"So, these new demons, anything concerning?"
"Well, the first one seemed real interested in attacking us, the second just walked away. The first one was quite a bit tougher than a vampire, so possibly something to worry about." Faith deciding not to sugar coat it to Joyce. "But Red and the other Brains promised to start researching first thing in the morning. While B was calling Red, I called Alex and he's taking his pack over to have a look, see if they find anything. They've got extra sharp senses you know."
Joyce nodded. "Every little bit of information helps." She agreed. The attack didn't sound like the Council's test, the second demon, the one that didn't attack, that was probably the one the Council was using, the Magic hologram. Since the girls had handled the attacking demon and come out of it with no injuries, Joyce decided not to say anything and just keep a close eye on their progress. She was interested in seeing just how they handled one of their so-called mysteries anyway. But if it looked like any of them were in trouble, she was prepared to step in.
As Joyce and Faith were chatting over hot chocolate, Alex and his pack made their way to the cemetery where the attack had occured. The truck with the observers had left and the Seals and Quentin were observing the recording of the attack and discussing how well the girls had handled it when Quentin's aide called their attention to the fact that four of Miss Summers' associates had entered the range of the cameras they hadn't yet taken down at the cemetery.
"She's already got her team investigating." Quentin looked pleased. "That was fast, but definitely a good sign that they're not wasting time. Which ones are at the cemetery?"
"Mayor Chase's daughter and her boyfriend and their friends."
"That also makes sense, Miss Summers said they can fight. They can be on guard in case another attack happens while they're gathering information. Keep an eye on them, we may find a way to help them improve their chances of survival as well." The aide nodded and watched the screens. The way the four teens were behaving was interesting.
It was probably a good thing the cameras didn't record sound and none of the observers could lip read, as Alex and the four teen Wolfbloods were having a very interesting discussion.
A/N If Faith seems a litte OC, there's a reason for that. This Faith has been in Sunnydale for months now and known since the beginning that the Wolfbloods could smell her emotions. Knowing people know what you're feeling either puts you on guard or frees you.
In canon Faith appears to care about her Watcher and looks haunted when she tells Buffy what Kakistos did to her. She also responded well to Mrs. Post's strict, but caring attempt to get her to accept her as her Watcher. Mrs. Post may have deliberately copied Faith's Watcher's manner in an effort to get close her.
