Not long ago, Kenneth was making a delivery to the Waste Dump and Recycling Plant. He puffed into the Yard when he heard a sound; a gentle, happy sound. "What's that?" he asked.
"You mean this, Kenneth?" A workman came towards him holding…a rather dirty bell. "We found this old bell on Noel's train this morning." He shook it; 'ding-ding' went the bell.
"Why would someone get rid of that?" asked Kenneth. "It has such a beautiful sound."
"Would you like to keep it?" asked the workman.
Kenneth gasped. "Can I?!"
"Of course."
"Oh, thank you!"
Kenneth was thrilled to have the bell. Later, he took it to the Repair Yard to be cleaned and in no time at all, it was as good as new. The workmen even made a special platform so it to be fitted to Kenneth's front and everyone liked how it looked and sounded.
After that, it seemed that whenever Kenneth had his bell with him, good things seemed to happen, so whenever he was worried about one of his jobs, he always took the bell with him, and he was able to get his work done. From then on, Kenneth always called it 'his lucky bell.'
One day, Marcus and Kenneth were collecting trucks. Marcus was taking a delivery of supplies to Carlisle Quarry and Kenneth was taking animal feed to Farmer Briar's.
Suddenly, Laurence rolled in coughing and spluttering. He was covered in dust from wheels to whistle. "What happened, Laurence?" asked Marcus.
"There was a rockslide at Carlisle Quarry."
"That's where I'm going."
"And it's a good thing you are," said the Tall Controller. "Marcus, when you get to the Quarry, I want you to stay behind and help Slater."
"Yes, Sir."
"And be careful," added Laurence. "There could be more trouble." And he puffed off to the Washdown.
"Rattling rails," wheeshed Marcus, "I didn't think there would be trouble today."
Kenneth felt sorry for his friend and wanted to help. "I know," he said, "why don't you take my lucky bell with you?"
"But…isn't your bell special to you?"
"It is, but I'm just delivering animal feed. I think you need it more than me today."
Marcus felt better. "Alright, thank you, Ken."
"But you must be very careful with it," Kenneth added.
"I will. I promise I won't let anything happen to it. In fact, I'll keep it in my cab. It will stay safe in there."
Marcus' Fireman took the bell, and he made his way along the line to the Quarry. When he arrived, he found Slater clearing rock and his paint was dusty too. "Slater, I heard about the rockslide. Are you alright?"
"Yes," coughed Slater. "Luckily, no one was hurt, but there is still a lot of rock to clear."
"Don't worry," whistled Marcus. "The Tall Controller asked me to stay and help."
Slater was right. There was a lot of rock, and it was blocking some track, but Marcus bravely set to work, and the two engines made good time. Marcus didn't know if it was Kenneth's lucky bell or the beautiful weather, but everything seemed to be going well.
Later, Marcus had one more load of rock to move, but then, there was trouble. A Quarry worker tripped over a stone and fell into a lever. The points were switched, and Marcus rolled into a siding.
"Bust my boiler!" Marcus cried. He bumped into an empty truck, bashed the buffers and crashed into the Quarry wall. The wall shook…and then, there was a rumbling sound.
"Look out!" called Slater. The alarm sounded and everyone cleared the area.
Marcus started to back up when he saw something shining…and gasped. "Kenneth's lucky bell! How did it get there?! We have to save it!"
"There's no time!" shouted his Driver. "We have to move or we'll be crushed!"
They were just in time.
Everyone was safe, but more rock lay everywhere. Marcus' Driver explained what had happened.
"Thank goodness you're alright," sighed the Quarry Master.
"But I lost Kenneth's bell," said Marcus sadly. "What will he say?"
"It wasn't your fault, Marcus," said Slater. "Just tell him the truth and I'm sure he'll understand."
Later, Kenneth and Loni arrived to help. "Marcus, I heard about what happened," Kenneth panted. "Is everyone alright?"
Marcus wheeshed. "Everyone is…but not everything. Kenneth…I lost your lucky bell under all this rock, but I couldn't help it. I suddenly swerved and crashed. It must have fallen out of my cab."
Kenneth looked sad; Marcus was afraid of what his friend thought. Kenneth took a deep breath. "It's alright, Marcus. The important thing is that you didn't get hurt."
"But…your bell was special."
"It was…but it wasn't as special as you." Marcus couldn't help smiling.
Everyone worked hard to clear the mess. There was only a small pile of rock left when a workmen shouted, "Look what I found!" He lifted an old metal tub and underneath was…
"THE BELL!" everyone shouted. It was, indeed, Kenneth's lucky bell and besides being very dusty, it was perfectly fine."
"I can't believe it got through that rockslide undamaged," exclaimed Slater.
"Well, Kenneth," said Marcus, "I suppose your bell really is lucky after all." And everyone agreed.
