It had been raining for a long time, but finally, one morning, the clouds drifted away, and the sun shone once more. At Whitehaven Sheds, all the engines were pleased.
"About time," sighed Nathan thankfully.
"What's the matter with rain?" asked Kana. "It makes everything look so clean and Driver says it's good for plants and trees."
"Yes, but I still wish it didn't make everything so grey and wet."
"Look!" chirped Kenneth, "up there!"
Everyone looked up to see a very colourful arch stretched across the sky. "Wow," said Kana, "look at all those colours. It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen."
"That's a rainbow," said Marcus. "They usually appear after there's been lots of rain."
"It looks like more than six railway tracks all going in the same direction."
"It is beautiful, isn't it?" agreed Tracy. "There's an old story that says there's something special at the end of every rainbow."
Kana's smile grew wider. "How wonderful!"
The Tall Controller arrived to give the engines their jobs. "And Kana, you have a local train on the Main Line today."
"Yes, Sir." Kana was excited. "It looks like one end of that rainbow is somewhere on the Main Line. Maybe I'll find something great along the way." And she raced off.
"But Kana," Tracy called, "rainbows are…!" But Kana was too far away to hear.
At the Station, Kana was almost bursting with excitement. "Get in quickly, please!" she tooted at the passengers.
It wasn't long before the Guard blew his whistle, but for Kana, it felt like hours. She raced along as quickly as she could. "Steady, Kana," checked her Driver, "we're not pulling an Express today."
"Can't we go a little faster? I want to find the end of the rainbow."
"You'll be lucky," said her Driver quietly.
Later, Kana was approaching St. Bees. "There's the end of the rainbow!" she called.
"Slow down," called her Driver. "We'll overrun the Station."
But as Kana raced around the bend…the end of the rainbow had moved. "What? But…it was right here…wasn't it?" The rainbow seemed even further away than before. "Oh well," sighed Kana, "I'll just have to find it again."
Kana continued on her journey wondering what she would find. She started arriving early at every Station and her Driver kept having to hold her back.
"Maybe I'll find new wheels," Kana said to herself, "or a new lamp…or maybe even some pirate treasure. Everyone will be so excited when I find…whatever it is I find."
Kana raced up hills and around bends, but every time she thought she had found the end of the rainbow, it moved. Station after Station, she never seemed to get any closer.
"Oh bother," Kana groaned, "I should've found the end of the rainbow by now." Suddenly, grey clouds rolled in, and the rainbow began to fade. "Oh no!" cried Kana. The sky grew darker, rain started to fall once more…and the rainbow disappeared.
Kana arrived at Silverdale and turned around for her return journey, but she was very sad. Then, Laurance puffed in. "What's the matter, Kana?" he asked.
"Oh Laurance, I was trying to find the end of that rainbow, but then, the rain came back, and it disappeared. I really wanted to find something exciting to show everyone, but I didn't."
"I'm sorry to hear that, but there's something you must know, Kana." Laurence paused. "Rainbows are made when the sun shines through water in the sky. That's why they can be seen after it rains. Finding something special at the end of a rainbow is just an old story."
"Oh," said Kana sadly.
"Don't be sad, Kana," insisted Laurence. "I think rainbows are special on their own. We don't get to see many of them, but they are still very beautiful. I hear that was the first rainbow you ever saw and that makes it extra special for you."
"…It was very beautiful."
"Yes, in fact, I think everyone saw it."
Kana smiled. "That means everyone got to enjoy how special it was."
"Quite right."
"Thank you, Laurence."
Kana felt much better as set off for home and it wasn't long before the rain stopped. Kana was happy to see the sun again and so were her passengers.
"Look at that, Kana!" exclaimed her Driver.
Kana gasped. "The rainbow's back!" The rainbow seemed even brighter than before and seemed to reach all the way to the ocean. "Now, everyone can really enjoy it." And Kana continued to smile as she trundled happily along.
At last, Kana was back at Whitehaven. The passengers got off, she shunted her coaches away and went back to the Sheds for her next job, but as she approached the Sheds, she screeched to a stop.
"Woooow!" exclaimed Kana.
"What is it?" asked Tracy.
"The rainbow! The end of it is over our Sheds!" And it was. "The old story was right! There is something special at the end of the rainbow!"
"Our Sheds?" Kenneth asked.
"No, all of you! My friends!"
"Well, you know what they say," laughed her Driver, "there's no greater gift than friendship."
A workman walked up holding a camera. "I say this is a day we should all remember," he said. Kana rolled into her berth and the camera flashed.
"Now, we'll always remember your first rainbow, Kana," said Marcus.
"And I'll always remember the special surprise I found at the end of it," replied Kana.
