Chapter 1
Annabeth's POV
"Where is she?"
I'm panicking. I know I am. Julia never left the woods after Capture the Flag three days ago, and she hasn't been seen since. She shouldn't have left camp, but nothing except a demigod could have gotten to her in here. To make things even worse, Clovis is missing too!
Piper places one hand on my shoulder.
"We'll find her," she promises. She doesn't say alive; as demigods, we know that it's always possible that our friends aren't going to come home.
I hear footsteps, and then Nico sits down beside me.
"She's not dead," he says. "I don't know where she is, but I'd know if she was dead." He hesitates.
"Go on," I prompt him. He nods once.
"Okay. What if we're going about this the wrong way? I was talking to my father and he said something weird. He said 'Maybe you are looking in the wrong place. Maybe you should check that which is less familiar.'" Piper frowns.
"What does that mean?"
Nico glances at us.
"We've been going through all the possible Greek and Roman mythical things that could have taken her, but we've been completely ignoring her human side."
"You don't mean…?"
"Yes. The Quileutes have their own myths, and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of those were real, too."
Piper stands up. "You're right. Doesn't Julia have a sister?"
I nod. "Yeah, but she lives in Washington. It's a while away…we could still go, though."
Nico stands. "I'll ask Chiron." He turns and runs towards the Big House. A few minutes later, he comes back looking excited. "He said yes!"
I smile. "Great, when do we leave?"
Julia's POV
"Here's what you're going to do."
I sit and listen to my captor. We're in a forest somewhere, and my captor's enemies live just beyond the tree line.
"Two of them are in that house right now. The older one isn't going to be a problem; it's the pixie we need to watch out for. The second we decide to do anything, she's going to see it. Do not make any decisions until the last possible moment. As soon as you're done with them, run. Got that?"
I nod and stand, walking through the trees and stopping at the big white house. I'm using the Mist to hide the sound of my footsteps, and the door is open. I step inside and creep into the living room. I'm invisible because of the Mist, but I can clearly see my targets. Two vampires, playing some kind of card game. One is slightly older, physically, with long caramel-coloured hair. The smaller vampire — who I assume is the 'pixie' my captor referred to — has short black hair. I creep closer, careful not to make a sound, and freeze when the small vampire frowns and places her cards down on the table.
"The future just disappeared," she announces. Her companion blinks in confusion.
"The wolves?" she asks. The other one shakes her head.
"Not the wolves, not Nessie, not anything I've ever seen — or not seen, I should say."
I'm frozen. I need to act now, or they're going to notice me. I step forward, throwing out my arms and concentrating. The older vampire stiffens, then slumps in her chair, her eyes slipping closed as she starts to shrink. The pixie leaps to her feet.
"Esme? What's going on–" Then she, too, falls. I heed the warning to leave quickly, glancing back to see that there are now just two piles of clothes where the vampires were seconds before. Then, I run.
My captor awaits me in the forest. She nods once.
"Good job. With the psychic out of the way, this will be much easier."
I shiver, the knowledge of what I've just done sinking in.
Oh, Styx. I just attacked two people — okay, vampires — who hadn't done a thing to me!
They had golden eyes, too. Styx! I've broken the treaty!
I remind myself that I had no choice. It was this, or my sister's death. I couldn't let Emily die.
I'm sorry, I think towards the vampires in that house, and their family — who are in for a surprise. I'm so sorry.
Bella's POV
"Come on, Edward," I complain. "I want to get back!"
"Okay, okay. Let's go." He turns and starts to run towards the house. Nessie's with Jacob, Carlisle and Jacob are hunting, and I didn't ask Rosalie what her plans were. I just knew that Emmett was involved.
I leap through the trees and land right next to the front door, which is when I realise…it's open. Weird. I shrug and step inside.
"Alice, Esme?"
Silence. Something is definitely wrong here. I move down the hall, on my guard in case something dangerous is here. I walk into the living room and freeze. On the floor there are two crumpled piles of clothing.
"Oh, no," I whisper. Then, something moves under one of the piles. Silently, I creep forward towards the heap of fabric. Just before I get there, though, the fabric shifts and a baby pokes her head out and looks up at me. I see her golden eyes and fluffy black hair, and then I scream.
"Edward!"
He's here in seconds, staring at the baby on the ground.
"...Alice?" he whispers. I stare at him.
"What's going on?" I ask him, fear in my voice. He shakes his head.
"I don't know how, but that's Alice, he replies. "Which means…yup." He pulls back the other pile and pulls out the tiny caramel-haired child underneath. "Esme. Bella, call Carlisle right now."
A/N
Yes, I know it hasn't been a week. I don't care. I needed to publish something. Surprise!
