Chapter 8:

Blaine it on the Boogie

Location: Cinnabar Island

"It's so sad," said Elaine. We looked around at the rocky waste land.

Cinnabar Island used to be a bustling community with a research centre and a Pokémon Mansion with a mystery. But one day, the volcano erupted. The only thing it had now was the Pokémon Center which was built afterwards. The Gym Leader, Blaine, even relocated to the Seafoam Islands for his Gym.

"Well," I said. "Let's not think too hard. You're battling today."

"Excuse me." Swimming by on a Lapras, we saw a Scientist with a machine on the Lapras' back. "Are you Chase and Elaine? Brock told me you would be here! He said you might want to use these. Catch!" The Scientist threw two rocks at us, landing just in front.

"What are they?" I asked.

"Brother, don't you see?" Elaine exclaimed excitedly. "These are Fossils! They can be revived into ancient Pokémon!"

"Which is what this machine is for!" the Scientist said. "Now please give me your Fossils!"

I took the Fossil that looked like a helmet and Elaine took the one with the spiral pattern on it. We handed it over and they were put in the machine. The machine whirred about and revealed our new Pokémon. For me? Kabuto. A brown Pokémon with claws underneath.

Revived from a Dome Fossil.

Revived from a 140-million-year-old Fossil. It swam by cleverly twisting its 10 tentacles. There is said to be a religion dedicated to this Pokémon.

Revived from a Helix Fossil.

"Thanks!" we both said.

"It's okay!" said the Scientist. "You know, many years ago I met a now Legendary Trainer on Mt. Moon. He seemed to like Fossils to. Tell you what. That Omanyte that I got? Helped fuel my passion!"

Location: Cinnabar Gym

We walked into a cave where we saw… a game show? There were multiple people sitting down to watch with Blaine in the distance.

"This is the Gym?" I asked. "Well, good luck Elaine."

"Welcome!" Blaine shouted as a spotlight appeared above Elaine.

"Oh my!" she said, getting out a comb and doing her hair in a panic. "Do I look good?"

"You look fine!" I said. "Go on!"

Elaine walked over to Blaine. "Welcome to… Gym Challenge! The simple goal? Answer three questions correctly to battle me! So, let's start!"

Elaine walked on stage whilst I went to the front row. Knowing this was a Fire Type Gym, I prayed there wasn't a splash zone.

"Okay. First question. May our two guests come up on stage!" Two Trainers came up; a Super Nerd and a Beauty. The Super Nerd sent out a Magmar whilst the Beauty sent out a Growlithe. "Question #1: which of these is the Spitfire Pokémon?"

Elaine looked at both of them. Please. It's not like we hadn't caught a Growlithe on our journey, because we had!

"It's Magmar!" she said.

"Corrrrect!" Blaine said. "And now, you get to battle the Magmar! Or whatever the Trainer wants to use first."

Elaine Vs. Super Nerd Erik

"Charmeleon, go!" Erik shouted.

"And I'm using Omanyte!" Elaine replied.

"Charmelon, Dragon Rage!" Charmeleon fired some energy at Omanyte, doing exactly 40 points of damage to it.

"Come back with Hydro Pump!" Omanyte blasted water at Charmeleon. It was a Critical Hit! Charmeleon was down.

"Okay Magmar, get in there!" Erik shouted. "Start with Low Kick!" Magmar kicked at Omanyte for Super Effective damage.

"Use Hydro Pump again!" Omanyte blasted some more water at Magmar. Amazingly, it stayed standing.

"Now use Confuse Ray!" Magmar sent out weird rays to Omanyte; it was confused!

"Fight through it and use Rock Slide!" Omanyte managed to make rocks fall from the ceiling onto Magmar, knocking it out.

"Correct answer!"

As it turned out, that wasn't the only reward; Omanyte was evolving! When it had finished, it was larger, its shell was spikier and it had a round mouth with four triangular teeth sticking out.

Its sharp beak rings its mouth. Its shell was too big for it to move freely, so it became extinct.

On the game show stand, a small balloon in the shape of Blaine suddenly inflated.

"Well done!" Blaine said. "Now, your next question. How many Badges certified by the Pokémon League are there?"

"Eight!" Elaine said.

"Ding dong! You are correct!"

Suddenly, a Burglar came on stage. "Ha ha, I'm stealing your Badges! You won't have eight when I have them all!"

"Oh no you don't!" Elaine shouted.

Elaine Vs. Burglar Quinn

"I choose Ninetales!" Quinn shouted.

"And I'll be using Rhydon!" Elaine replied.

"Use Nasty Plot!" Ninetales started plotting… nasty things I suppose.

"Drill Run attack Rhydon!" Rhydon's horn started spinning and it rammed it into Ninetales.

"Now use Dark Pulse!" Ninetales fired black energy at Rhydon for lots of damage.

"Rhydon, Take Down!" Rhydon rammed its body into Ninetales, knocking it out.

"Okay, I wasn't stealing anything! It was part of the game show!"

Another Blaine balloon appeared.

"Congrats! You're almost there! But… for this next one, we will need a guest! You!"

Blaine pointed to me. I pointed to myself awkwardly. "Sure thing," I replied. I walked up. "So, ask away."

"An opponent uses Flash Cannon on a Fire Type. What is the effectiveness?"

"It's not very effective!" I replied.

"Corrrect!" Blaine said. "Now you get to battle… where are you?"

Another Burglar ran out. "Oh drat! I missed the cue again!"

Chase Vs. Burglar Dusty

"You're up Dewgong!" I shouted.

"Go Growlithe!" replied Dusty.

"Use Waterfall!" I shouted as Dewgong created a waterfall which it climbed up to attack Growlithe.

"Growlithe, Crunch!" Growlithe chomped down on Dewgong.

"Use Watarfall again!" Another Waterfall, another victory. Well, not yet. Only Growlithe was down. I had some Pokémon left.

"I choose Rapidash!" Dusty shouted, sending out the flaming Pokémon.

"Thanks," I told Dewgong. "Now! Go Kabuto!" Out came my newest Pokémon. "Use Aqua Jet!" Kabuto shot forward, water coming off of it. It struck at Rapidash.

"Now Rapidash, Fire Blast!" Rapidash shot a blast of fire at Kabuto. It barely did anything.

"Come back with Rock Slide!" Kabuto made rocks fall from the ceiling onto Rapidash. It was a Critical Hit! Rapidash was finished.

"Sorry Blaine. I'll get the timing right next time."

You know what was timed right though? Kabuto's evolution! It evolved into the mighty Kabutops with scythes for hands.

A slim and fast swimmer, it slices its prey with its sharp sickles and drinks the body fluids.

Revived from a Dome Fossil.

The final balloon inflated!

"Good luck Elaine," I said as I went back to my seat. Elaine quickly healed.

"So!" Blaine said. "To get your ultimate cash prize of the Flame Badge…" Blaine held up the Badge that looked like an ember. "You have to beat me! Let's do this!"

Elaine Vs. Gym Leader Blaine

"Magmar, go!" Blaine shouted, sending out his Fire Type.

"I choose you Pikachu!" Elaine replied as Pikachu jumped into the ring. "Splishy Splash!" Pikachu jumped up and then down, creating a large splash that soaked Magmar.

"Flamethrower!" Magmar shot fire at Pikachu.

"Use Splishy Splash again!" Pikachu splashed once more, knocking out Magmar.

"My my, you are good. Rapidash, go!" Out came the graceful fiery Pokémon.

"Thanks Pikachu," said Elaine as Pikachu came running back. "Okay Omastar, I choose you!" Her latest Pokémon was sent out.

"Rapidash, Drill Run!" Rapidash' horn started spinning and it rammed it into Omastar for Super Effective damage.

"Omastar, Hydro Pump!" Omastar blasted water at Rapidash for lots of damage; it almost went down.

"Use another Drill Run!" Rapidash drilled into Omastar once more; it continued to stand!

"Now Rock Slide!" Omastar made rocks fall onto Rapidash. It was finished.

"Okay, not bad. Next up, Marowak!" Out came a Marowak, but black and with the bone it was holding on fire with blue flames on either end.

"Cool!" I shouted. "That must be a Marowak from the Alola region!"

"Marowak, Bonemerang!" Marowak threw its bone at Omastar. The bone then came back, hitting Omastar in the process and knocking it out.

"No!" shouted Elaine.

"Don't give up!" I shouted.

"I don't plan on doing so! Go Gyarados!" Elaine shouted. The Water Type titan was sent out. Even Marowak looked a bit intimidated. "Use Waterfall!" Gyarados made a large waterfall, then swam into Marowak.

"Marowak, Thrash!" Marowak started thrashing about, hurting Gyarados in the process.

"Use Waterfall again!" Gyarados hit Marowak one last time, finishing it off.

"Final Pokémon and you win the grand prize! Go Arcanine!" Out came Growlithe's evolved form. "Use Outrage!" Arcanine got angry, then went berserk on Gyarados.

"Waterfall attack!" Gyarados swam into Arcanine for quite a bit of damage.

"Use Outrage again!" Arcanine ripped into Gyarados once more, this time dealing a Critical Hit that knocked it out.

"Okay then," said Elaine. "Go Wigglytuff!" Out came the cute-balloon thing. Great idea to; Outrage has no effect on a Fairy Type. And it didn't! Outrage did nothing! "Now use Psychic!" Wigglytuff gave Arcanine a blast of Psychic energy. It did just enough to take it down!

"Congrats! You win!"

Lights went off and confetti came down. "Congratulations! You win the ultimate prize!"

We got… the Flame Badge!

"As for extra prizes, TM46! It contains Fire Blast, which has a chance of burning!"

"This is great!" I said. "So next is… oh. It's Viridian City…"
