Chapter 6 – Complicated

A brainless, talentless, bimbo.

Really.

And she thought she was actually growing on him. Guess she was wrong. Granted he made that comment before they became friendly towards each other but a nagging voice at the back of her persisted to relay the fact that it had been just a day. All those thoughts could still be in his head.

Sighing, Lacey got out of the shower in the DX locker room with a towel wrapped around her happy to at least be the only person currently in the locker room.

Or so she thought.

"Hey champ!" A male voice said coolly, taking her off guard and she nearly jumped out of her towel. "Nice towel" He said, sounding amused. Lacey blushed.

"Hunter, I'm sorry I thought I was the only one here" Lacey said with a weak smile and Hunter's eyes roamed her body with an amused expression on his face.

"Nice towel" He teased. She said nothing as she gave him the middle finger which made him roar with laughter as she grabbed her clothes and went off to get changed in the bathroom. "You know you can always get changed in front of me champ, you know I'll close my eyes" Hunter teased once more.

"In your dreams Hunter" Lacey shot at him as she shut the bathroom door and got changed into her casual clothes, ignoring Hunter's roaring laughter. Once she was done, she stepped out and folded her ring gear into her gym bag then sat down on one of the chairs, hoping to get a little bit of rest before the end of the show.

She noticed Hunter watching Bret Hart's match against Vader on screen and gave out an involuntary sigh, catching Hunter's attention.

"You alright champ?" He asked. "I've noticed you've been down in the dumps since this match started? Is it about Bret?" Hunter, being a perceptive sweetheart that he was asked.

"Yeah. He said some… things to me… or about me and… I dunno" Lacey said, running a hand through her hair. She couldn't believe that Bret Hart words got to her that much but damn it hurt. Was that how he really saw her? Was that how everyone saw her?

"Awwn cheer up champ. Bret's a big dummy. What does he know?" Triple H said in an encouraging manner. Truth be told he always had a soft spot for the younger Michaels. She was like his adopted sister so he always hated seeing her upset.

"Yeah" Lacey said in a shaky voice. "Hunter, do you mind if I ask you a question?"

"You just did" The blonde man replied cheekily, getting a smile out of her in the process.

"Haha very funny" Lacey said sarcastically. "Hunter, do I look smart?"

"You're the smartest person I know champ. I was at your college graduation ceremony remember? I've never seen a report card with so many A's before" Hunter commented. "Plus other than that, you make good decisions, you picked up wrestling fast, you give great advice, you're smart while dealing with people and… you're literally the most articulate person I know." Hunter praised.

"I really appreciate that Hunter. I do. But… do I look smart? Like meeting me for the first time, would you think I'm smart?" She asked, with her big blue eyes staring him down.

Hunter's breath hitched in his throat at that question. Now that was a hard question.

"Lacey, you're smart. We both know this"

"But do I look smart Hunter? Don't lie to me" She pleaded. Triple H let out a loud sigh as he ran his hand through his hair.

Suddenly their attentions were caught when Rick Rude stepped into the locker room as well still clad in his suit and tie.

"Richard! Perfect! There ask him" Hunter suggested, diverting the attention away from him. Lacey eyed him sternly but didn't protest and turned her attention over to the confused Rick Rude.

"Am I in trouble?" Rick asked.

"Depends on what you'll say next" Hunter replied.

"Rick, do I look smart?" Lacey asked. A puzzled Rick walked further into the locker room and reached for his bag.

"Of course you do Lacey. After all, who helps me with my taxes?" Rick joked, cracking a smile.

"True" Lacey replied. She was the one who helped him with his taxes from time to time. "But do I look smart? Like at first glance, would you think I'm smart?" She asked.

Rick visibly hesitated and shared a glance with Hunter who put both hands in the air in surrender in an effort to tell his friend he wasn't gonna be the one to answer that question. Rick sighed.

"Sweetie, you're beautiful and you have an innocent and playful aura. Most people won't think you're smart at first glance. But then again, I think it's almost impossible to judge anyone's brain capacity by their look" Rick said, trying to mellow out the situation. Lacey gave it a thought.

"Well then. Looking at Sherri Martel, Chyna and Sunny. Would you think they're smart? They're all really pretty too" She interrogated, crossing her arms over her chest.

Hunter and Rick were stunned to silence, not sure of what to say next. That gave Lacey all the answers she needed.

"Thanks for confirming my theory" She said as she stood up and left the room still leaving the two grown men speechless.

"Women. Am I right?" Hunter spoke up, still a bit shocked by the encounter.

"I hope she's okay" Rick said in a worried tone. "What the hell brought this on?"

"I wish I knew Rude, I wish I knew" Hunter trailed off.

Lacey wasn't in the best of moods. Most people walking along the corridors noticed it. She was frowning. Something very uncommon for Lacey Christine Michaels. She was either pissed off or truly hurt. Everyone took note of the mood change with a few people asking her what was wrong but she brushed it aside and made her way to the gorilla so that she could watch her brother's match with the Undertaker.

She always believed her brother was the best wrestler in the Federation currently and he was he favorite wrestler. Undertaker came a close second and at number three was… Bret.

Speaking of Bret, the Canadian wrestler kept glancing over at the blonde bombshell who had her eyes glued to the screen. He couldn't help but notice by her expression and body language that she wasn't in the best of moods.

And he was to blame for that.

"Fuck, she looks so dejected" Owen commented, looking in the same direction as Bret. "I'm going over" He muttered before being stopped by Bret.

"No, I'll go" Bret spoke up, catching the attention of Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart.

"Bret I think it's best you let Owen… and he's gone" Jim said as Bret strolled over to where the young Michaels stood. Taking in a deep breath, he was determined to make things right between them.

"Nice match huh?" He commented awkwardly, standing next to her. Lacey's eyes widened at the sight of him as she could feel her heart breaking all over again.

"I… I should go" She said quietly and was about to leave when Bret gently grabbed her arm, forcing her back.

"No… please" He pleaded in a soft back as the young Michaels turned back to stare at him. To top off his guilt, he could see the little tears forming in her eyes which emphasized the fact that she was indeed hurt.

And it was all his fault.

"I'm sorry" Were the two words he spoke as little streams of tears came pouring out of Lacey's eyes. "Fuck"

"I didn't mean to cry, I just…" Lacey was cut off by Bret pulling her into a warm embrace which she immediately reciprocated. He could feel how tense she was but also felt her slowly relaxing until she wrapped her arms fully around his neck.

At that point, Bret couldn't have cared less about the people who most likely saw their little exchange but as they slowly broke apart, his eyes settled on his brother Owen and his brother in-law Jim both looking on in confusion.

"Are you alright now?" He asked, reaching up to her face and wiping away the tears which made her visibly shiver. "Don't ruin those beautiful eyes" Bret commented as Lacey's eyes widened in shock at his comment. It was sweet but totally out of character for him.

"What?!" She asked with a smile.

"You heard me" Bret said. "You're beautiful" He commented. "And not only that but you're also really talented in the ring and smart as well. I completely retract my earlier statement" He stated. Seeing the look of pure joy on Lacey's face he was inclined to continue on with professing his thoughts. "And well, after spending time with you yesterday and today, I think I wanna get to know you better"

"Awwn Bret, really?" She asked, with joy radiating from her. Bret smiled and nodded. "Well, if you're serious… you should ask me out for ice cream this after the show" She teased.

"Why ice cream?" The hitman asked with a laugh and the blonde shrugged, grinning. "Oh this is so not me but fine. Do you wanna get some ice cream after show tonight?" Bret asked as he turned his attention to the screen to see Shawn and Austin defeating Brian and Davey in what was the main event.

"Looks like the show's coming to an end" Lacey commented with a smile.

"Well then, see you in a little while" He said pulling her into a full hug. Bret saw that Owen, Davey along with some other people had their eyes on them but at that very moment, Shawn and Steve walked through the curtain and caught a glimpse of their spectacle.

"What's going on here?" Shawn asked, glaring Bret down as the two broke apart. Lacey rolled her eyes.

"Oh Shawn, the over protective brother thing so doesn't fit you." Lacey said sweetly as she placed a kiss on his cheek. "Hi Austin"

"Heartbreaker" He acknowledged. "What's going on here?" He asked, motioning to her and Bret.

"Oh yeah. Don't wait up for me after the show, I'm going out with Bret for ice cream" Lacey stated. Her brother narrowed his eyes at her and at Bret as the tension became more and more prevalent.

Bret sighed inwardly, knowing there was no way Shawn would allow him go out with his sister. But, to his surprise…

"Alright then, just be careful. And make sure he pays for everything. Now I've gotta go shower. My bed is calling my name" Shawn said, ruffling his sister's hair. "And if one hair on her head gets misplace, I'm coming after you Hitman" Shawn threatened before walking off with Steve.

"Really, you have no problems with Lacey going out with Bret?" Steve asked inquisitively.

"Oh not at all. She's smart. She knows what she's doing. If for some reason she sees something good in Bret I can't change her mind." Shawn stated. Steve nodded as the two kept walking away.

"How come HBK has no problem with us?" Bret asked. Lacey giggled.

"Oh trust me he does. He hates your guts" She pointed out with a giggle. "But Shawn's the last person who would dictate who I can go out with or not. He's sweet like that. Plus he trusts my judgement"

"Wow. Can't say I'd do the same if the shoe was on the other foot" Bret said. "Well, I've gotta go shower as well. I'll come over to your locker room when I'm ready" He said. She nodded as they once again hugged before Bret walked back to Jim and Owen.

"About time. I'm going over" Owen said, going over to Lacey. Bret briefly watched them interact before deciding to retreat to his locker room for a shower.

"Well I've gotta go. Also, don't wait up. I'm going out with Lacey after the show" Bret said.

"Oh no. That's a bad idea." Jim protested.

"Nope. Shawn doesn't mind so that's good enough for me. Later Anvil" Bret greeted as he walked away, not ready to hear any more protests his brother in law had. Probably because of their age difference or something which he couldn't give two flying fucks about.

He just wanted to get to know the girl a bit more.

And he would get the chance to alright.

Soon enough, it was time. He made his way to the DX locker room and before he knocked, Chyna made her way out with Triple H. Chyna gave him a knowing smile.

"Just a minute Hunter" Chyna said. Hunter shrugged as he walked away leaving Chyna with Bret. "Be careful with her and don't do anything stupid." She said as she dug into her purse. "Also, remember this"

Bret's eyes widened as she pulled out a pack of condoms and placed it in his hand with an evil gleam in her eyes.

"Safety first" She muttered before walking off to meet Hunter.

Bret looked at the condoms and didn't give it two thoughts before throwing them in the trash. He could understand Chyna's point of view but he knew very well that sex wasn't what he was looking forward to at this point.

Heck, he'd barely known the girl for two days. The last thing he needed was for her to find the condoms on him and think he was another Scott Hall.

"Are you ready to go?" He asked, once she stepped out of the locker room. She nodded, smiling as she linked her arm with Bret's and walked alongside him.

She couldn't really quantify how she felt at that moment. She was scared no doubt but also intrigued, expectant and happy. She'd always found Bret attractive.

"Ice cream. Really. I'm pushing forty sweetheart, I can't be doing these things" Bret joked as Lacey giggled.

"One night won't bite" She said as they both got into his car. "So, I'm going on a date with the Hitman. The same guy who tried to strangle me yesterday." Lacey joked. Bret tensed up at that statement.

"I'm sorry again. I didn't mean to" Bret apologized once again.

"You still did it" Lacey whispered, trying to forget the horrible memory. Yeah sure, Bret had made up for it a lot by helping her with the Scott situation but what he did still remained fresh in her mind.

"So, what can I do to erase that from your mind?" Bret asked. Lacey gave it a thought.

"Well I doubt you can erase anything but…. One thing I know you can do is tell me why you did it. Also, if your brother didn't come in what were you gonna do?" Lacey asked.

She thoroughly doubted that Bret would get overly physical with her as that could lead to jail time and job termination cause there was no way in hell she was gonna stay quiet about it if it indeed happened.

But it didn't.

And for some reason, a little voice at the back of her head told her that Bret had other plans. She had no idea if it was good or bad but she was sure he had other plans.

"You really wanna know?" Bret asked.

"Yep" She responded. Bret sighed, knowing this was gonna be an interesting conversation.

"I was trying to convince myself that I was angry at you. I hate your brother, that's a fact and that was supposed to extend to you by default. But after being in the ring, that moment… I just… nevermind"

"Tell me Bret, pleasseeeee" She pleaded. Bret sighed.

"I wanted to kiss you" Bret confessed. "And I was angry at myself for feeling that way. So I reacted that way. But the feeling didn't go. I just found myself being more drawn to you. While we were at the club yesterday, my eyes were solely on you. That's how I found you when Scott… yeah" Bret confessed again, stunning Lacey even more.

She was flattered because it wasn't easy to grab Bret's attention yet she did it unknowingly.

"Wow" She said simply, not sure of any other way to react. She was kind of overwhelmed.

Sadly due to her silence, tension formed in the air with Bret regretting telling her the truth. They had a long silent drive to the ice cream parlor.

Not a great way to start a date huh?

They continued to ride in silence until they got to the ice cream parlor, both of them internally wishing the night would go on well.

"Well that's your seat" Bret said, ushering her to the seat opposite himself. Lacey gave a tight smile.

"Thanks Bret" She said. Soon enough they got their others in and waited patiently in silence. That was when Lacey decided to speak up. "Okay, you know what. This isn't working"

Bret sighed. "You think? Maybe we should've waited a bit before going out on a date. You know, get to know each other a bit more" Bret said.

"Maybe but then again what's a date for?" Lacey reasoned. "Other than you treating me to ice cream after what happened" Lacey teased with a smirk. Bret laughed.

"I'm starting to think you care more about eating ice cream than you do about getting to know me" Bret joked. Lacey smirked.

"Maybe I do" She said with a sly smirk. "But I do wanna know more about you Hitman. So not to be cliché or anything but tell me about yourself. Who is Bret Hart? And more so, why do you hate my brother? I remember you guys being such good friends once" Bret raised an eyebrow.

"Didn't you debut like just last year?" Bret asked. "How do you remember us being very good friend?"

"I used to hand around backstage a lot when I was still in college. I was in attendance when you faced Davey at Summerslam too"

"Oh really, I would've remembered you" Bret said as he was in deep thought. Lacey raised an eyebrow.

"How so?" She asked.

"Well, you're freaking gorgeous. It's impossible not to remember you" He commented with a wink as she turned a shade of red.

"You'd be surprised" She said. "So why are you are my brother mortal enemies anyways?" Lacey asked. Bret took in a deep sigh. "Did he steal one of your girlfriends?" She teased. Bret chuckled in response.

"I was married then sweetheart" He informed. "And even if I wasn't, Shawn can't steal any woman from me." Bret said as they both shared a laugh. "And we were friends, but I guess with time our egos got the better of us. And your brother is a dick"

"So are you though" Lacey teased. "But it's all in good fun"

"I guess so" Bret commented. "So, when did you start wrestling? Today was the first time I ever watched you perform in the ring and you're incredible" Bret commented, still in awe. Lacey giggled. She knew for a fact that Bret loved all things about wrestling. His life was wrestling. So if he had respect for her wrestling skills, he had respect for her.

"I actually started training a little under two years ago. After I graduated from college. Jose Lothario." She said. Bret's jaw dropped. "What?"

"Lacey… you've been wrestling for less than two years?" He asked. She nodded slowly.

"Yeah, I feel I've achieved a lot despite being green and all but…"

"Green? Lacey you're fucking amazing! I love your work. You were able to get a good match out of Terri, Terri!" Bret emphasized as Lacey blushed.

"Thanks Bret" She sad still blushing. "But there's always room for improvement. I was really surprised when they put the title on me actually" She commented.

"I was at first, but after seeing your skills, I believe you should come after my title" He said in all seriousness. "Maybe we could pitch it to Vince. Since people are crazy about seeing us together, maybe we should have a match together"

"Is that just an excuse for you to get up close and personal with me?" Lacey teased with a smirk. Bret smiled back at her but remained silent. "Is that a yes?"

"Well, I wouldn't deny it." He said, pausing for a second to look her up and down. "Lacey if you kissed me yesterday I would've kissed you back. For at least five seconds at least before throwing you off" He joked. "But it would've been a good five seconds" He said.

"Well, let's see how it goes" She said.

They spent the remainder of their ice cream date talking about their families, careers, hobbies, likes and dislikes. All the tension from the car was gone and the two had a nice time. Lacey was glad to see Bret open up and found out that he was actually an amazing guy with a nice personality while Bret noticed Lacey's maturity despite her playfulness.

All in all, it was a great date.

"What do you listen to?" He asked, on the ride back to the hotel.

"Surprise me" She said as he put on a song "Rooster" by Alice in Chains. "A man after my own heart"

"You didn't tell me exactly what type of rock you like though. I was about to put in Kiss or AC/DC" He said. Lacey giggled.

"And I would've loved them either way." She said with a smile. "Layne has an awesome voice" She commented, referring to the lead singer of Alice in Chains. "Jerry too" She added, referring to the lead guitarist and back up vocalist.

"Talent runs deeply" Bret agreed as they listened to the song. "Did you have a nice time tonight?" Lacey nodded. "Would you like to do this again some other time?"

Lacey's eyes grew wide with excitement as she nodded earnestly. Bret gave a little smile as he stole a glance at her before focusing on the road. So much for not smiling. This girl had made him smile so many times within the space of an hour.

What a girl.

A few minutes later, they arrived at the hotel and quickly made it to the elevators as Bret pressed a button for his floor.

"I'm on floor six. What floor are you on?" He asked her.

"Floor six as well" She replied. Bret nodded and said nothing afterwards as the elevator doors opened up once they arrived at their floor.

"Want me to walk you to your room?" He offered.

"Awwn, thanks Bret" She said. "Speaking of which, I think I just about owe you something" She said with a seductive smirk.

Bret's eyes widened a bit as he was taken aback but was ultimately able to form some words. "Oh yeah?"

"Yep. I pondered a bit over what you said before in the car and I thought, well it might be too early but live or let die" Lacey said.

"So what do you owe me?" Bret asked, not taking his eyes off her. Lacey smiled seductively as she placed Bret's hands around her waist and wrapped her arms around his neck giving similar to their in ring encounter. "I have a sense of Déjà vu here" Bret joked as Lacey giggled. They leaned into each other for a kiss and once their lips were just a few centimeters away from each other… the elevator dinged making them pull apart as a reflex.

Standing there was none other than Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart.

Bret wished the ground would swallow him that instant.

"Sorry to interrupt but it's good to see you Bret. It's an emergency" Jim said as he practically pulled Bret away from Lacey leaving the blonde in a state of confusion.

"See you Bret" She said as she made her way back to her room. Bret waved back whilst being pulled away by Jim.

"Okay Neidhart, what the fuck? I was about to get a kiss from her. You better have a really good reason for pulling me away" Bret said, narrowing his eyes at his brother in law.

"You can't have anything to do with her Bret. Trust me"

"I don't care if she's Shawn sister or not, I'm interested in the girl. You can't tell me otherwise" Bret said.

"Bret she's young…"

"Age is just a number" Bret defended.

"You don't have a good track record with romance" Jim pointed out. Bret rolled his eyes.

"Doesn't mean I can't give it a chance"

"Well… I didn't wanna mention this before but… Owen is practically in love with her" Jim said.

"I don't fucking care if… wait…" Bret paused as he processed what Jim had just said. "Owen… my brother is…"

"Yep. Owen likes Lacey"

"Fuck"

And we dropped the ball. What will Bret do now?
