Brief History:

Born on the faunus homeland of Menagerie in the New World, Blake is the daughter of the current Chieftain though, though as the position is an elected one in which the Chief serves for life it is not hereditary and thus she is not the heir, and spent her early years there. While she was born after the worst of the slave raids on Menagerie had occurred she was born in the aftermath when anger and hatred towards humans ran deep in the faunus race.

Her father opted for a peaceful solution and in the years before he became Chief he created the White Fang activist group seeking equal treatment for faunus in the world. In this vein he petitioned the World Government for a seat at the Reverie but as Menagerie can't make it's Heavenly Tribute they were not part of the World Government during Belladona Ghira's time as head of the White Fang.

This got them nowhere and led to a schism within the White Fang between those who wanted to force equality by violence and those who advocated for achieving it via peaceful means. In the end the violent faction led by Khan Sienna won out and she replaced Ghira as the High Leader of the White Fang and he returned to Menagerie to focus on building up the faunus there and being able to make the Heavenly Tribute. He would succeed in this regard and it was this success that led to his election as Chief when his predecessor died.

However, by this point Blake had fallen under the sway of Sienna and another charismatic hardliner called Tauros Adam and stayed with the White Fang rather than return with her parents and thus became a member of the White Fang Pirates who began to terrorize the entire Grand Line seeking recognition similar to the Sun Pirates under Fisher Tiger only they were even more willing to kill humans when they clashed with them. It was while with the White Fang that Blake ate her Devil Fruit though the reasons for why she ate that specific Devil Fruit remain unknown.

What is known is that for a while Blake was a loyal member during her formative years with the White Fang. However, after a decade with the White Fang their tactics were evolving, becoming significantly more extreme as violence was winning them respect, and she began to become disillusioned with them.

The breaking point was a secret raid that she went on with Adam to the West Blue to attack a shipping convoy of the Schnee Corporation that was carrying raw materials mined by slave faunus, and other races, labor and weapons for war to the Grand Line. During the attack Adam ordered that all ships be destroyed with the people on board without hesitation or care for the loss of life despite the humans on the ships, as well as innocent faunus who were working on them, not engaging Adam and Blake in combat.

Blake couldn't do this as these were innocent civilians and the real target should be Schnee Jacques and the others who exploited and profited off faunus slavery, which as they'd secured the cargo wasn't going to happen with this shipment anyway. To stop Adam she went along with this before taking the detonator from him, leaping onto the last ship ahead of him, subduing the crew and then steering it away so that Adam couldn't reach her and the charges wouldn't blow leaving him to fend for himself and defecting from the White Fang.

From there Blake made a deal with the crew to drop her off at the nearest port, a city on the island of Vale, and tried to decide what to do with her life. One thing that she couldn't do, however, was go home as as she was too ashamed to do that just yet given how she'd left things with her parents.

In the end that would be the right call as it was while Blake was on Vale that she ran into a brash, rookie pirate called Xiao Long Yang, who intervened when some humans wanted to attack Blake simply for being a faunus. From all accounts it wasn't even a fight but then again Xiao Long Yang's combat skills were already well documented by that point.

Naturally Blake didn't actually need saving as she was more than skilled enough to handle it but Yang's actions showed her that there were humans out there who'd help a faunus out because it was the right thing to do. That and Yang took a liking to her so she brought Blake to her sister and only other crewmate, Rose Ruby, telling Ruby that Blake had nowhere to go and that she should join them due to the prejudice against faunus. By all accounts Blake had no say in this and was practically dragged to Ruby by Yang.

Ruby agreed and with that Blake joined the crew and due to her time in the White Fang already had a 15 million berry bounty before entering the West Blue making her the first of the Rose Pirates to have a bounty. From there the girls sailed the West Blue and during that time accidentally exposed the crimes of Schnee Jacques and recruited his daughter and heir Weiss into their crew with only a little friction between the Schnee heiress and a faunus who'd attacked her father's business before heading to the Grand Line officially the Rose Pirates with Ruby as their Captain.

There they would recruit more members and Blake's bounty would jump to 65 million berries following her actions in Ruby's accidental war with the now former Warlord Torchwick Roman. Blake's bounty would remain at that amount when the Rose Pirates reached Sabaody meaning that unlike her Captain she was not a Super Rookie or a member of the Worst Generation. Along with Ruby, Weiss, and Yang, Blake was present in the Employment Office for Straw Hat Luffy's actions that had drastic ramifications though she played no role in the events that followed the assault.
