Spotty didn't come back to finish his Maldives holiday and, when SuperTed returned to his space station after the holiday was over, he saw that his friend didn't go there after their big fight either. He tried to call the treehouse in case he went there instead of going to the Planet Spot. The screen didn't answer.
While he unpacked his suitcase, SuperTed had thought about going to the Planet Spot to find Spotty and apologise to him and ask him to be friends and partners again, but he knew that he couldn't just say, 'I'm so sorry for what I did'. He would have to say and prove something more meaningful and deeper to his best friend than just those words. He needed time to work it out and he thought he needed to give Spotty more time to recover from their fight in the Maldives.
Then there was an alarm call. SuperTed ran to his computer screen to answer it. On the screen appeared an old man wearing a fireman's uniform and white helmet.
"SuperTed? Are you there? This is Station Officer Steele of the Pontypandy Fire Brigade. We need your help in the Pontypandy countryside immediately."
"I'm on my way, Station Office Steele." Then SuperTed turned off the screen. "Come on, Spotty." Then he remembered that Spotty wasn't with him because he had been too harsh on him. All he could was just say his secret magic word and rip his fur off revealing his scarlet suit and yellow rocket boots. Then he flew out of his space station and flew as fast as he could to Pontypandy.
SuperTed arrived at the Pontypandy countryside. Then he found the fire engine Jupiter and some people next to it in one big field that looked like a giant wreck.
"SuperTed!" Station Officer Steele cried happily. "We're so glad you made it."
"What's the problem, Station Officer Steele?" SuperTed asked.
Then Steele explained as quickly as he could that on this field Auxiliary Fireman Trevor Evans was having a lovely picnic with Dilys Price, her son Norman, Bella Lasagna and Sarah and James on this lovely warm day. Then the field started to rumble and a sinkhole was created, caused by a large rumble from the coal mine under it collapsing and the three children – Norman, Sarah and James – fell into the sinkhole and they landed in the mine. As if that wasn't bad enough, there was for some strange reason chemical barrels and bags of chemical powders down there and mine beams crashed into the barrels causing them to leak onto the chemical powder bags and causing toxic fumes to join the already highest level of poisonous gas in the coal mine. After the fire service arrived after Trevor called them, Firemen Sam, Elvis Cridlington and Penny Morris put on their breathing apparatus and hazmat suits and then they went down into the mine to rescue the children and stop the toxic fumes spreading. They found the children and the chemicals, but there was another rumble and the mine caved in, trapping both the firefighters and the children with the still-leaking chemical barrels. Before he called SuperTed, Steele tried to call other fire services with Newtown among them, but none could come to help the Pontypandy Fire Service because they were all very busy with rescuing other people from fires and rivers and mountains. They were all so very busy that they couldn't spare any of their firefighters to assist the Pontypandy Fire Service. So, Steele was delighted that SuperTed could come to help them. The Pontypandy Fire Service didn't have any other breathing apparatuses or hazmat suits for the teddy bear, but, luckily, he didn't need it.
"Right, leave this to me," SuperTed said as he flew into the sinkhole and flew down into the mine.
The coal mine was dark and cold as SuperTed walked through the mine. He didn't fly because his rocket boots needed time to recharge from flying to Pontypandy as fast as he could. He could see the dangerous green chemical gas, so he followed it. It took him to the pile of rumble from the mine collapse. When he reached it, he immediately got to work by taking the rocks out to make a hole big enough for him to get through. As he worked as fast as he could, he wished Spotty was here to help him, but he kept reminding himself that it was his own fault for sending him away and he made his bed and he had to lie in it.
When he went through it, SuperTed was completely shocked at what he saw. What he saw was Firemen Sam, Elvis Cridlington and Penny Morris, still wearing breathing apparatus and hazmat suits, trapped under rubble and the three children, Norman, Sarah and James, sitting in a corner and wearing their oxygen masks, and the chemical barrels still leaking its chemicals onto chemical powder bags. The firemen and the children were delighted to see the teddy bear.
SuperTed immediately ran to the firefighters and lifted the rubble of the firefighters.
"Thank you, SuperTed," the firefighters said, as he helped them up.
"We've got to stop those chemical barrels leaking and get the children out of this mine," Sam said.
"And we've only got five minutes of oxygen left," Pennis added.
"You get the children out of this mine," SuperTed said to the firefighters. "Leave the chemical barrels to me. I'll catch up with you later."
"Here, you'll need these," Penny said, giving him the sealing bandages and pumps for the job he was going to do.
"Thanks. Now, quick. Get the children and get out while you can." Then SuperTed got to work to deal with the leaking chemical barrels while the firemen started to escort the children away.
It didn't take SuperTed long to finish sorting out the chemical barrels. They all had sealing bandages and they all were pumped up enough to stop leaking. Then he heard rumbling. It sounded like another cave in and it was in the far distance. His rocket boots had enough power to fly so he immediately flew back the way he came in and he saw the firefighters and the children had stopped. The reason they stopped was because the mine was caving in again and this time it was in front of them and it kept on collapsing as it got closer to them. The way they came in was caved in so they couldn't get out that way and there was no other way to get out and the mine continued to collapse and collapse every second.
Then SuperTed quickly had an idea. He flew up and used his strength to create a tunnel above so he could get the firefighters and the children to the surface. Then he picked up loose mine beams nearby him and slammed them into the tunnel to secure it. He hoped it would be sturdy enough and give him enough time for him to do the job.
"Take the children first, SuperTed," Sam ordered.
SuperTed grabbed Sarah first and flew up the tunnel and reached the surface and the fresh air. He gave her to Steele.
"The mine is collapsing again, Station Officer Steele!" the teddy bear told him. "Get everyone off this field now!" Then he flew back into the hole to get the others.
"Well, you heard him, Auxiliary Fireman Evans," Steele said to Trevor. "Get everyone off this field now!"
"Right, oh, sir," Trevor replied. Then he went to get everyone off the field.
Soon SuperTed arrived back with James and gave him to Steele before he returned to the mine. By the time he arrived with Norman, everyone was well off the field.
"Sir, what about Jupiter?" Trevor asked Steele.
Steele looked ahead and felt stupid for leaving the fire engine.
"Leave Jupiter," SuperTed ordered. "I'll get it once I rescued everyone from the mine. Just keep these people safe."
Then SuperTed arrived back with Penny. Then he came back with Elvis. And finally he returned with Sam. Then he went back into the mine. And he came back with the sealed up chemical barrels and bags of chemical powders. And then he went to pick up Jupiter before it fell into the ground and then he put it back on the road.
A few minutes later, everyone including SuperTed got checked up. Apart from a few bruises and cuts, they were okay. And they were all grateful for the brave teddy bear for saving them.
"Thank you so much for saving us, SuperTed," James said.
"If it weren't for you, none of us would have made it out alive," Sam said.
"Well, this is the whole point of being SuperTed," the teddy bear said. "Saving innocent lives and capturing guilty ones."
Hours later, the story of SuperTed's heroic actions spread all around the town of Pontypandy. The Mayor of Pontypandy awarded the brave teddy bear the Pontypandy Gold Medal, the town's highest award, for saving the town's citizens and Steele awarded him the Gold Cross medal for exceptional valour and Bella gave him her very best spaghetti and meatballs at her café for dinner and it was on the house.
Despite receiving all this wonderful praise and recognition he deserved, it still wasn't enough for SuperTed to get over what he did to Spotty. He still wished his best friend was here to help him on this mission and this one was concrete proof that he would have been very useful, despite the fact SuperTed managed to do this mission without him. Maybe if SuperTed went to the Planet Spot and told Spotty that, maybe he would come back but he still couldn't work out if it was still too soon and he still kept thinking if his friend still needed more time to forgive him.
