**I do not own these characters or the world, that belongs to our lovely author of MHA, Kohei Horikoshi. Also, cover art was a commission by me from the artist Krumbs. Follow them on if you'd like! They are extremely talented!
A/N: Here's the latest chapter folks! Anyone else watch this weeks episode and at the end when Deku is about to blast into Shigaraki think he just looked super stunning? I know Horikoshi designed him to be plain but I've always felt that he was far from plain. I feel like he's got more of a boyish charm and his eyes are just so pretty and big! But I digress…anyway, here's the latest chapter. Enjoy! Thanks for any comments/favorites/follows. They make my day!
Thirty-Two We Learn Suneater's Favorite Color
Ochako Uraraka followed behind Nejire Hado, watching as the older girl bounced along in front of her. Tsu was at her side also watching their friend tightrope walking along the stone barrier next to the footpath that they were on. It was a common sight for them to see her skipping, bouncing, or like she was now, precariously balancing on the barrier on the side of the path. Hado often seemed to have boundless energy even after a full day of work studies.
It was close to eight o'clock now and they had just a little bit further to go before they'd reach the UA campus and their respective dormitories. Uraraka found herself fatigued just looking at Hado and wondered how she could possibly produce such enthusiasm after a grueling day of work.
Ryukyu had worked them hard almost all day. It wasn't unexpected though, she liked to run the girls through everything they could possibly imagine on Sunday's since it'd be the last full day that they could utilize before going into the week. Today was no exception; after spending half the day patrolling and intervening with some small time but feisty villains, she'd had the latter half of the day dedicated to exhausting and demanding scenarios. Uraraka had thrown up twice from pushing her quirk to the max—Ryukyu had had little sympathy for her and had simply reminded her that she must continue to expand her abilities limits telling her, "You've not reached your full power potential; there's so much more you can do."
Tsu had pushed herself to her limits too. Uraraka had been surprised to see that Tsu's tongue by the end of everything looked chapped and dried out. Her ability to stick to the walls had also diminished which made Uraraka wonder if whatever substance she secreted that allowed her to wall walk was running out.
Their older classmate, however, seemed totally unaffected by Ryukyu's rigorous scenarios. She'd blast off her charges over and over again, sometimes at extremely high outputs, and yet she almost always recovered within just a few minutes. Perhaps if Uraraka and Tsu had been training with Ryukyu as long as Hado had they too wouldn't be winded to the extent they were. Uraraka also wondered if it had to do with the nature of Hado's quirk. Hado had to have built enough immense stamina to even use her quirk more than a few times since it drained her vitality with every blast, so perhaps it was just that, or maybe some combination of both.
"So ladies how was Valentines Day? Did you do anything fun?" Hado chirped from in front of both girls.
Uraraka shifted uncomfortably. She couldn't remember exactly what she'd said about Valentines Day the last time Hado had probed her about it. She did however, remember that Hado had in fact been on some kind of date with Amajiki. If she wanted to deflect the things she'd done on Valentines, perhaps she should bring that up.
"Ribbit. I spent it studying but Nejire, ribbit, I remember you saying you had a date with Suneater. How did that go?" Tsu asked, beating Uraraka to the punch.
The periwinkle haired girl halted on the barrier she was balancing on and abruptly jumped down and turned to face them, a bright smile on her face. Her enthusiasm and her apparent inability to ever feel tongue tied or embarrassed would never fail to amaze Uraraka.
"It wasn't an actual date…more of a friends get together for Valentines Day!" Hado corrected with excitement.
"But you two did go to the movies… without anyone else?" Uraraka questioned.
"Yup yup we did!" The older girl exclaimed, eyes squeezed shut and a bright smile on her face.
"So what did you go see, ribbit?" Asked Tsu.
Hado spun around in a bouncy circle before facing them again. Was she extra excited? Uraraka wasn't sure.
"Well I had suggested that we go see a scary movie but Amajiki wasn't super into that idea. Lemillion said we should go see a romance but poor Amajiki," she paused a moment to giggle, "his whole face turned beet red when he suggested that! So we decided to go see a comedy!"
"Oh…what was it about?" Uraraka asked. She didn't really feel like she was up to date with pop culture let alone what was popular in the theaters. School and her work studies occupied almost all her time…and honestly, Deku seemed to be occupying more and more of her time.
"Well it actually turned out that the movie we agreed to see had literally just left theaters so we decided last minute that we'd go see this popular drama that everyone has been talking about!" She explained.
"Was it any good, ribbit?"
"Haha, you wouldn't believe it but it wasn't actually a drama! It was a romance and in fact it was a foreign film so everyone was speaking French which I think really made poor Amajiki uncomfortable!" Hado had turned away from Tsu and Uraraka and was now bouncing along the sidewalk as she spoke.
"But there were Japanese subtitles weren't there? I mean, they usually have foreign movies dubbed or at least with subtitles," asked Uraraka in confusion.
"Oh there were subtitles but I think whoever translated it definitely wasn't super good with the language because some of the lines made no sense! It was actually pretty funny!" She laughed.
"Do you speak French Hado?" Uraraka asked now wondering about potential hidden talents that her peer possessed.
"Well I do have a great aunt that was actually born and raised in France, though I've never actually met her…in fact, she died just after I was born."
"Ribbit. So no?"
"No! Not a word!"
"Okay…so aside from not really understanding the dialogue, did you have a good time?" Uraraka asked with a little huff.
Hado spun back around to them and gave another cheerful smile. "Actually I was able to understand it pretty well even with the not so great translation, because Amajiki actually speaks really good French!"
Uraraka and Tsu both stared at her with open mouths. Amajiki spoke French? And he spoke it well?! It was known for being such a romantic language…how did he, no, why did he know it? It didn't really fit with his character.
"Amajiki speaks French?!" Uraraka repeated in disbelief.
"Of course he does silly!" Hado said with a knowing smile as she turned away from the girls to continue walking ahead. They were getting closer to UA by the minute which meant that if they wanted any actual juicy details they were going to have to direct the conversation more aggressively.
"When did he learn French, ribbit?" Tsu asked, also clearly still in disbelief.
"Oh he started learning it when he was little and always had it as an extra class in school so he's gotten quite good at it, though he won't admit that. I think that's why he was red faced because he had to lean over and almost continually whisper in my ear to tell me what was actually going on. That made him even more red faced. Poor guy!" She laughed a little and continued bouncing along.
"Oh wow. I bet everyone thought you were a couple," mused Uraraka. She briefly imagined herself in a dark movie theater sitting next to Deku and him having to lean over to whisper the dialogue into her ear. The thought made her blush but admittedly, it also made butterflies flutter in her stomach.
"You bet they did! In fact, when the movie ended and we walked out together somebody stopped us and said we made a nice couple. I've never seen poor Amajiki that red before!" Laughed Hado and she twirled around. Uraraka was accustomed to Hado's enthusiasm but she thought that maybe just maybe this time she was a little bit more excited than usual.
"Ribbit. Poor Amajiki," Tsu said sympathetically.
"What did you say when they said that?!" Uraraka asked urgently, secretly deciding that she was going to put to memory whatever Hado's response was in case she was ever asked that about she and Deku…then again, she and Deku kind of technically were a couple.
"I laughed and took Amajiki's hand and said we were just friends celebrating Valentines Day together! I don't think she believed me." They were maybe five minutes from the UA campus now, not much time left to find out more about Hado's date.
"You held Amajiki's hand?" Tsu repeated a note of surprise in her voice.
"Yup! He didn't let go of mine either even after I corrected the lady. I think he was too nervous to after that. Poor guy was so shell shocked I had to practically drag him out of the theater and to ice cream," the older girl explained.
"You also got ice cream!?" Uraraka questioned. They'd been to a movie and then an ice cream date? How could it not be a date? Nobody went to ice cream together if it wasn't a date.
"Hey hey hey now, don't go thinking it was a real date just because we got ice cream together! I can see what you're thinking. It was just a nice Valentines Day treat to share ice cream with each other. I did the same thing with Lemillion last year," Hado said in a tone that had just a hint of irritation to it.
Tsu and Uraraka both quietly muttered acknowledgements though neither really believed her. Everything she'd told them sounded more and more like an actual date than a just friends date.
Silence reigned between the girls after Hado's last statement.
"So what happened after that?" Uraraka eventually asked, knowing that their time was about to run out. They had crossed onto UA's campus and were swiftly making their way to the dorms and would branch off from each other in less than three minutes.
"We walked back to UA together," she paused for a moment as they approached the split in the footpath, "he told me his favorite color was periwinkle."
"His favorite color is periwinkle?" Repeated Uraraka with a raised brow. It seemed like kind of a random and weird thing to say at the end of their not really a date.
"Like periwinkle as in the color of your hair?" Tsu asked softly. Uraraka turned to look at her amphibian friend and suddenly put two and two together. Was he saying that he liked Hado by saying that the color of her hair was his favorite color? It seemed like something that Amajiki could do; a roundabout way to say you liked someone without actually risking a true full-blown confession.
"He said, 'you have pretty hair, it's actually my favorite color,' and then we went inside and went to bed since it was already pretty late," Hado explained as they stood at the branching paths. She turned to face both Tsu and Uraraka again, her face still bright and cheerful though this time Uraraka thought she saw a little twinkle in her eyes.
"Ribbit," croaked Tsu.
"Does…does that mean he like likes you?" Uraraka asked softly.
Hado surprised them both by letting out a tinkling laugh. "Haha, of course not! He was just telling me his favorite color that's all. I'll see you girls later, good night!" As she turned to leave Uraraka felt certain that Hado wasn't telling them the truth or at least wasn't telling them what she really thought Amajiki's color preference meant to her.
"Night!"
"Good night."
Both girls watched the periwinkle haired girl prance away. She was most definitely bouncing a little more than she usually did. She likes him, I know she does because that twinkle in her eyes is how Deku's eyes look when we talk, she thought to herself.
"She just lied. She totally likes him and him telling her his favorite color is his roundabout way of confessing his feelings to her!" Uraraka whispered as she leaned toward Tsu.
"Ribbit…maybe or maybe it was just a friends date and that is his favorite color," Tsu whispered back.
Uraraka snorted in disbelief. "No Tsu, definitely not! The way she was extra bouncy today and couldn't stop smiling like that—she likes him, trust me."
Tsu shrugged, clearly not as convinced as Uraraka was. "Maybe but Hado is always bouncy and excited, ribbit. It's just how she is. And maybe she didn't tell us what she actually thought of it because she isn't certain, ribbit. Amajiki telling her his favorite color is the color of her hair and that it's pretty isn't a very direct way of telling someone you like them. Hado would be assuming a lot by thinking that that was a love confession from Amajiki, ribbit."
Uraraka sighed. Tsu was right. If it was some kind of indirect confession, it really was a roundabout not very obvious way to go about it…but then again, someone as socially awkward, shy, and insecure as he was, well it made a certain kind of sense to have an indirect confession of romance by admitting to liking something associated with the person and not the actual person themselves. It seemed like the safer route.
"Well I think it was a confession of some sorts. For Amajiki it seems like it should mean something," Uraraka said with a shrug as the two girls started walking again toward their dormitory.
"Ribbit. I'm sure if Amajiki and Hado started dating she'd tell us. I don't think she's the type to keep secrets," Tsu mused thoughtfully. Uraraka nodded in agreement as they approached the dormitory for class 1-A.
"How did watching the aurora with Deku go? I never actually asked," Tsu abruptly asked just as they were about to come to the door.
Uraraka nearly tripped she was so startled by Tsu's abrupt question. She had almost forgotten that Tsu had been around when she'd branched off from her friend to watch the borealis with Deku. Of course Tsu would have remembered and wanted to ask her about it. While the two girls had never really openly talked about her feelings for Deku, it was kind of an unspoken truth between them that Tsu knew Uraraka had not just friendly feelings for their classmate. It was just surprising that she'd waited until now to ask about it.
"Oh…uh, yeah, it was nice! I'd never seen it before and it was really uh cool to see it for the first time. I uh, we, we had a lot of fun looking up at it!" She stammered nervously.
Tsu's mouth twitched very briefly into a smirk before returning to a neutral position. "Was it worth being out in the cold?" Tsu's mouth was again twitching up into just the hint of a smirk.
Uraraka's cheeks grew hot and she knew that the sight before her friend would be all too incriminating. "Y-yes it was."
Now fully smirking Tsu simply replied, "Good."
The two girls stepped into their dormitory, Tsu with a satisfied smirk on her face and Uraraka red faced with embarrassment.
