August 1994
Today was the initiation day at Manchester university
After a full day of lectures, Tom and Lorna were heading back to the dorms when they heard a blood chilling scream echo across the campus gardens.
At 20 years old, the world was there for the taking.
"What was that? "Lorna asked looking round, nervously.
"Not sure." Tom replied.
They then heard someone crying.
"Over there by the fountain." Lorna nodded.
"Stay here. " Tom told her.
"One, they could be armed and two you're not leaving me here on my own." Lorna replied. Pulling his arm.
"Fine but you stay behind me." Tom told her.
They couple made their way over cautiously and found a lone female, crying.
"Are you ok?" Tom asked cautiously.
"Course she's not ok, give me your coat." Lorna told him going over to her.
Tom knew better than to argue and gave her his coat.
"I'm Lorna, that lanky softy is Tom. What's your name?" Lorna asked softly, putting the coat around her.
"Izzie, my name is Izzie. My bag, he took my bag." Izzie hiccups.
"Oh darling, come on, come with us." Lorna replied, helping her up.
"I.. It's my first day." Izzie told her.
"Our dorms aren't far, let's get you in, get you a sugary tea and deal with the rest later." Lorna told her.
Izzie didn't know what it was, but she felt somehow she could trust the couple who had been so kind to her. They were strangers, they didn't have to stop and help her, yet they did.
It didn't take the trio long to get to their dorm. Lorna got Izzie settled with a sugary tea.
"Sorry about this." Izzie apologized again.
"You have nothing to apologize for, campus security is on their way. There's been a string of robberies over the last few weeks." Tom told her.
"Your more than welcome to stay here, have you been assigned a dorm?" Lorna asked her.
"I don't have one, I'm only part time. I have two daughters at home. " Izzie explained.
"I see, I'll give you a lift home." Lorna offered.
"No, no you don't have to do that." Izzie protested.
"You're in shock, you're in no fit state to drive." Lorna told her
"I'll bring it to you tomorrow if that suits?" Tom offered.
"Thank you. " Izzie thanked him.
A month later, they met in the campus cafe.
They catched for half an hour.
"Oh are you coming to the end of term ball?" Lorna asked Izzie
"Oh I don't know, it's a bit short notice with the kids." Izzie explained.
"Get Jimmy to mind them." Lorna replied.
"I'll see. Who'll be there?" Izzie asked.
"You haven't met everyone yet, have you?" Tom asked
Izzie shook her head.
"There's Rachel and Adam there a year above us." Tom explained.
"Although Adam is madly in love with her!" Lorna exclaimed gleefully, marveling in the gossip.
"Babe. " Tom rolled his eyes playfully.
It's true! Have you seen the way he looks at her?" Lorna turned her head to him.
Tom shrugged
"Hmm anyway, she was seeing Eddie last term, don't know if they still are and Addy wasn't happy at all. Although he'd probably never tell Rachel. Shame." Lorna explained.
"Lorn…" Tom warned her, he knew what she could be like.
"What? He's in love with the girl. Alright, alright. Ok." She sighed.
"There's Jack, although he's meant to be seeing Dsvina, he secretly sees Steph behind her back sometimes. But we're not meant to know that. " Lorna dished.
"No way, really?" Izzie replied.
"Although I think she secretly knows." Tom replies.
Then there's Andrew, real swot. Cute…"
"Lorn!" Tom exclaimed.
"Well, it's true." Lorna shrugs.
"Anyway, real brain box, private school boy type. He worships Kim. But she doesn't take his school boy ways." Lorna explained.
"I'm surprised he still has manhood left. The amount of times she's torn him a new one." Tom replies
"That's very true, remember the Christmas party? I think the whole campus felt sorry for him." Lorna replied.
The trio continues chatting for half an hour before parting ways.
The months flew by and Izzie had met everyone and they had all become fast friends.
The ball was in full swing and everyone was having a great time.
Adam, Rachel and Jack had graduated and secured jobs.
Everyone was a bit tipsy and having the time of their lives.
"Babe, I'm just gonna get some air." Lorna called over the music.
"Want me to come with you?' Tom asked, not wanting her out on her own at that time of night.
"No, you stay, love. Rachel, Kim and Izzie are coming with me. I won't be long." She replied, kissing him.
20 minutes later
"No, you two go in, I'm right behind you." She told her friends
"Izz, can I have a word?" She asked her.
"What? Now? , it's freezing out here. Come on." Izzie complained.
"I'm just gonna ring my mum, I'm right behind you." She explained.
Izzie nodded and headed inside.
She didn't see it coming as she turned around and felt a hand cover her mouth.
"Scream and I'll kill you." The stranger hissed in her ear.
The next half an hour changed her life as she knew it.
The first thing that hit her was the light drizzle of rain, the type of rain that seeps into your bones.
The next thing was the cut on the right side of her forehead and her bleeding nose
She sat up carefully, with the upmost caution.
Every fiber of her being hurt, she'd never experienced pain like it before.
She give herself a once over, her heart sank at the realization of what had just happened to her.
She also noticed her bag was missing, she slowly and shakily got to her feet, a wave of dizziness overcame her and she fell to the ground again.
The party was approximately 100 yards away, she could hear her friends laughing and having a good time.
Loney, scared and hurt, she crawled her way over to the entrance of the hall.
Not having the energy to open, she just slumped beside it.
"Oh sorr… Oh my god. " Adam quickly draped his jacket over her and pulled out his phone while yelling for help
"What are you shouting about? Oh my. Hey darling, what's happened, eh? " He asked in shock, kneeling beside her.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry… I… I didn't… ItIt wasn't… " She sobbed, unable to finish her sentence.
"I've got you, I'm not going anywhere. Love. I'm never leaving you ever again. " He whispered softly.
"Has someone rung an ambulance?" Andrew asked. looking around.
"It's on its way." Adam told him.
"What scumbag would…." Jack growled in anger
The girls came out to see what the commotion was.
"Are you two… Oh my god, is she ok?!" She gasps at the sight.
"I don't understand, we left her half an hour, 45 minutes ago." One of them explained
The group could do nothing but look on as she was loaded to the ambulance, uncertain of what the future held.
