Chapter 9
Graduation Day
One day, in the choir room, Will ran inside and told Finn to do a drum roll. He happily announced, "I am proposing to Miss Pillsbury."
Everyone clapped and cheered this time. Sugar screamed happily. Claire covered her ears.
Finn said, "We are so happy for you, Mr. Shue."
Will said, "It has to be perfect. So, the assignment for the week is to come up with a proposal number."
Artie said, "Well, you can count on us, Mr. Shue."
Claire was walking by the swimming pool with two others.
A woman with blond hair said, "Claire Thomas! My name is Roz Washington. You are one strange kid. I've never seen arms like that on a white child. I bet you had to overcome a lot. Well, I know a thing or two about overcoming. It was told that black people couldn't swim. But I had a dream that one day I would get to the promised land."
The guy said to Claire, "Coach Roz was an Olympian."
Roz said, "That's right. I won this damn bronze Olympic medal in Beijing, China, for individual synchronized swimming. Nod to me if I'm getting through to you. Nod to me." Claire nodded. "I'm only gonna say this once, Claire Thomas, and I want you to listen to me carefully. If you bleed in my pool, I will kill you."
Claire said, worried, "Duly noted."
Mercedes asked, "You sure you want to go through with this?"
Claire said, "Well, I'm here, aren't I? What?"
"I believe your mom's exact words were $350 are a lot a money for something you don't really need."
"350 bucks? For an Xbox 360, maybe, but a ring?"
Santana said, "They're quality rocks."
"I earned that money. Besides, my mom told me it was my decision to make."
Tina said, "Which means you're really not supposed to buy it."
Will and Finn were going ring shopping. Finn said, "Rachel says you have to spend three months' salary on a ring. I kinda zone out sometimes when girls talk about stuff like this."
Will said, "Finn, I'd like you to be my best man."
"Are you screwing with me?" Finn smiled.
"No. You taught me more about being a man that anyone. You stand up for your friend, you're not afraid to cry sometimes, and you hope for me not to do anything stupid on my bachelor party." He chuckled when Finn hugged him. "So, is that a yes?"
"Yeah."
"All right."
"I've been thinking about my future, too. I met with a recruiter."
"For football?"
"For the army. I wanted to do something special like my dad. Ooh, that one's nice. It's medium-sized, so it'll be easy to clean. Miss Pillsbury would really like that."
"Yeah, she would."
Rachel, Mercedes, Tina and Santana sat Will down.
Tina said, "In order for you to propose to Miss Pillsbury, we're going to need some information first."
Mercedes asked, "What did you think when you first met?"
Will said, "Welcome to McKinley, Miss Pillsbury."
Emma said, "Thank you," while putting her name up by the door.
Will said, "I'll never forget the first time I saw her." Even Santana was moved.
Rachel said, "We got this one covered."
Then in a classroom, Finn walked in and Will and Emma were sitting down with Burt and Carole. Burt told him to have a seat and Finn said okay.
Burt said, "Will told us about your plans for the future."
Will said, "Look, I know telling them would upset you, but this is a big decision."
Finn said, "Yeah. Well, I was gonna tell you guys about it sooner or later."
Burt said, "Look, Finn, I want what you want. I'd like someone to take over the shop when I'm in DC."
"Well, I'm not enlisting tomorrow."
"Okay, I'm glad."
"I just wanted to feel obligated of my dad, to make something of myself. Be a war hero and help like he did."
Carole nodded, "I knew this was about him."
Emma said, "You don't to prove to anyone."
Carole said, "He was a good man, brave and true. He had the same sense of humor you do. But he didn't die in Iraq. He served over there, but I never found out what happened to him. He broke."
Finn asked, "He died a hero's death, right?"
"He died in Cincinnati after being discharged. Honey, he had a drug problem that he tried to get over, but he would just…disappear. One day, he just didn't come back." She started sobbing. "It was an overdose."
Finn said, "Ohh, I feel sick."
Burt said, "I know it's a lot to hear. Just take it slow."
Finn asked his mom, "Why did you lie to me?"
"Because your dad was so much more than his last few months. I was gonna tell you when I thought you were ready."
"Well, I'm not ready. How could you think I would ever be ready for something like that?" He walked out of the room in a huff.
Will asked if Emma had a second and a girl, a boy, Sue, and Beiste all gave her white flowers. The others were swimming and singing "We Found Love" by Rhianna. Will was wearing white. He took off his top hat and coat, then jumped in the water. He swam to Emma.
"Emma, you are the one. You always have been. I felt like I had to stop myself from doing this the minute I first saw you. The first time I held this hand, it felt like I held it a million times before. Life is messy. It just is. But that's why you have me - to balance it out. I love you with everything I am and everything I hope to be. So, Emma Pillsbury, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"
Emma smiled, "I love you so much. Yes. Yes. Yes."
They kissed and everyone cheered. Rachel and Kurt held each other's hands and jumped up and down in the pool.
In the auditorium, the next day, Finn was looking at a picture of his dad. Rachel told him he had his eyes.
Finn said, "I was gonna plan out a picnic, like the one we had for our first date, but I couldn't figure out where you got those airplane cups."
Rachel said, "Yeah, I never understood why you ran off so quickly."
"Yeah, I was just nervous. I have something to tell you. But you have to promise me that you won't say a word until I'm done, and I know that's really hard for you, so."
"Okay."
"I spent my whole life wondering what my father was like. What I was gonna be like. I have high-school hero written all over me. Except for one thing, you. You're like a beacon of light guiding through darkness. You're like some big gold star, and for some bizarre reason, you chose to let me love you. And if you let me keep doing that, it could be okay." He pulled out a small box. "Uh, I had to open my first credit card to get this. It's not very big, but it's a promise that I will love you." He got down on one knee. "All you have to do is say yes. Rachel Berry, will you marry me?"
Everyone decided to do Michael Jackson music a week later. In the Lima Bean, they were discussing his songs. Sebastian then walked in and greeted Blaine first. Kurt said, with disdain, "Do you live here or something? Seriously, you are always here."
"Oh, hi, Kurt, I almost didn't recognize you. I heard you guys talking and the Warblers are doing Michael for Regionals."
While they're doing a Michael showdown in a parking lot, Sebastian made the big mistake of Slushing Blaine so hard that it hurt his eye.
In the choir room, Will said, "In all my years as a teacher, I've never known a Slushie to do that much damage."
Finn said, "That was not a normal Slushie, Mr. Shue. There were like rocks in it or something."
Kurt said, "Sebastian is evil. He needs to be expelled."
Will said, "Guys, Figgins and I spoke to Dalton's headmaster. Let the security system handle this."
Artie said, "No. Dalton's old school, Mr. Shue. We need payback."
Finn nodded and Mike said, "An eye for an eye."
Will said, "No, I have a zero violence policy of any kind."
Artie said, "No, we sing, and that's all we do."
Will said, "Do you want to get disqualified from Regionals?"
"I don't give a damn about Regionals!" Finn looked at Artie in surprise. Artie continued, "What do you expect from us? We're people. I know the rest of the world might not see us like that, but when they tease us, throw stuff at us, toss us in dumpsters and tell us we're nothing but losers with stupid dreams, it freakin' hurts." Kurt looked somber. "And we're supposed to turn the other cheek and say that our hard work makes us better than them? But it gets pretty hard to feel that way when they always get to win."
Will said, "I get how upsetting this is."
Artie said, "No, you don't. And don't give us any of that 'it gets better' crap. I want it to be better. I want to hurt them, the way they hurt us." Mercedes looked at him with anticipation. "Worse, I want them to feel my pain, because, frankly, that's all I have left to give." That was deep.
Will said, "Artie, take a break."
Rachel still hadn't given Finn an answer to his proposal yet. While Rachel was still a minor, she has confirmed that she does love him. She just wanted to wait until the appropriate time. It was a lot to take in. Kurt and Burt walked into the choir room. Kurt opened his NYADA letter and he found out he's a finalist. They hugged. While Rachel was happy for him, she didn't get her letter yet.
Meanwhile, Santana got Sebastian to confess that he put rock salt in the Slushie that attacked Blaine.
Rachel and Finn were singing in the choir room and Rachel said yes. Finn was so happy. He gave her the ring and the hugged and kissed. Everyone smiled.
In the auditorium, Santana blabbed about what Sebastian did and the other Warblers turned on him. Artie said, "You can have Michael. But just because you can perform him doesn't mean you understand him."
Kurt said, "It wouldn't be as satisfying winning Regionals if you weren't there, suffering the agony of defeat."
Artie said, "Now get the hell out of our auditorium."
Rachel also finally received her NYADA letter. "I'm a finalist!" They hugged. Kurt said, "Congrats!"
"Thank you."
"I knew you would be. Have you told Finn yet?"
In the choir room, Will asked, "What do you all see yourselves doing in the year 2030?"
Rachel and Kurt said, "Broadway. Twinsies."
Artie said, "Maybe walking."
Claire said, "Probably watching the entire How I Met Your Mother series."
Mike raised his eyebrows and nodded at that.
Will said, "The culture is changing. The world is changing. That needs to be reflected in here. So for this week's assignment, try to think of a Spanish song."
Brittany said, "Ooh."
Santana asked, "Why now?"
Will said, "Because it's long overdue."
David Martinez walked in. Rachel said, "Oh, my God. Cutest…"
Sugar said, "Smile…"
Artie said, "Ever." His smiled faded.
Finn said, "What's duende?"
Santana said, "It means dwarf."
Will said, "Yes, it literally means dwarf, but it also means to have soul and inspiration."
In the auditorium one day, Claire and Anne Marie were performing "Fuego" by the Cheetah Girls. Classic.
Rachel said, "Time to turn up the Heatblast." She pressed a button that looked like a flame and the machine sparked. "Okay, that was a little too much of a blast."
Santana asked Will why he was even a Spanish teacher in the first place. Will said it was because it was the only position open at the time. Santana said he was better off teaching glee, so he offered the Spanish class to be taught by Martinez. He was so happy about that that he hugged him.
Later on, it was Valentine's Day. Will walked in and said, "Okay, guys, let's hear it for love. Regionals are next week and we still need to raise $250 for costumes and hairspray."
Kurt said, "Oh, God, not another bake sale."
Sugar gave Will the money and everyone clapped and cheered. She said, "I love the sound of applause, even if I have to buy it." She invited everyone to a party at Breadstix. She said, "No single people allowed, everybody has to being a date."
Rachel said, "Hey, I tried to have true love."
Mike said, "Yeah, with a teacher."
Sugar also gave everyone boxes of chocolates. Quinn saw that Puck ate most of his already. He said, "I found mine 10 minutes ago."
Rachel and Finn found Rachel's dads, Hiram and LeRoy, singing in the auditorium, wanting to congratulate them on their recent engagement.
Rachel said, "Oh, God."
Finn said, "Is that your dads?"
Hiram said, "LeRoy, we agreed, no vocal runs."
LeRoy said, "I would love to hear you sing something straight."
Rachel asked, "Dads, what are you two doing here?"
Hiram said, "Well, Burt Hummel and your boyfriend's mother told us that you two were getting hitched."
Finn said, "Mr. and Mr. Berry, I am so sorry. I know it's customary to ask the fathers first, but…"
LeRoy put his hand up. "We just wanted to say congratulations."
In a classroom, Mercedes banged a gavel and introduced Joe Hart. "Everyone, this is Joseph Hart. He just transferred here."
Joe said, "I guess I'm a sophomore. I've been homeschooled my whole life. My best friend was my mom. I named my dreads after apostles."
Quinn said, "You have got to be kidding me."
"I hope you don't mind if I take off my shoes. I'm used to walking barefoot."
"He's like a teen Jesus."
Claire asked, "What with the, uh, tattoos?"
Joe said, "Bible quotes."
In the cafeteria the next day, Kurt got a gorilla gram thinking it was from Blaine. Artie and Rory were having a contest to see who will have Sugar as their date.
Rory said, "Chicks dig accents. This is a four-leaf clover, friend. You're gonna need all the luck you can get."
Kurt asked, "Do you people just carry those around?"
Artie said, "Let's Road House, Flanagan."
Sugar said to Claire, "So, Claire, this boyfriend of yours, is he real?"
Tina smiled and Mike nodded.
Rory said, "Oh, yeah. He's very real. I've seen him, too. Handsome lad."
Tina and Mike were singing Nat King Cole's "L-O-V-E" in the choir room.
Brittany later walked to Santana in the hallway with a special playlist she made for just the two of them.
Outside, Rachel got a Valentine song and Joe was singing "Stereo Hearts."
Santana gave him $10 to sing to Brittany. Joe was reluctant.
In the choir room, Rachel giggled. Kurt walked in, "Bee mine forever, from your secret honey."
Will said, "Rory."
Rory said, "I've been trying to extend my VISA so I can spend junior year and McKinley. But that request has been denied, so I'll have to go back to Ireland at the end of the year. I miss my family so much, but you all have become my second family."
Claire was singing "One Step at a Time" by Jordin Sparks.
That night, Rachel and Finn were having dinner with Hiram, LeRoy, Burt and Carole. Hiram and LeRoy were playing the piano.
In Breadstix, Kurt walked in. The waitress said, "A party is planning tonight."
Kurt said, "I know. I'm early."
It was revealed that the gorilla was actually Karofsky and not Blaine. Kurt was in shock.
"So, you shoved me into lockers and hate kissed me. Now after a conversation at Scandals, you want to go out with me?"
Dave said, "When I was at McKinley, I hated who I was. I took it out on you because you were so proud. You've helped me so much, Kurt."
"And I'm flattered, really. Dave, I'm so proud of you for coming so far. And I want to be happy for you, and you will be, but you know I'm with Blaine. I do like you, but just as a friend."
Dave stood up. "I hope you like the chocolates. The butterscotch ones are my favorite."
"Mine too," someone said. "Hey, Karofsky."
"Nick."
"You guys hanging out for Valentine's Day?"
Kurt said, "No. We just bumped into each other. We used to go to the same school."
Dave said, "I gotta go."
Mercedes, Quinn and Joe all sang to Brittany. Joe said, "After thinking and praying about it, there was only one right answer. Absolutely. Love is love." Brittany and Santana kissed and everyone cheered.
After that, Blaine sang "Love Shack" with a recovered eye. "Knock a little louder, Sugar!" It was a night to remember. Hearts everywhere.
In the Lima Bean, Rachel and Kurt were looking at bridal magazines. Smythe slimed up. "Well, if it isn't a young Barbra Streisand and a male Betty White."
Kurt said, "We can't come here anymore. You give a bad name to the gay community."
Smythe gave them some photoshopped pictures of a naked Finn.
Rachel said, "Oh, my God! These are photoshopped. His thing is not that small or brown."
Kurt said, "And he could never pull off those pumps."
Smythe said, "You have 24 hours to drop out, Rachel."
Kurt said, "I'm sorry, I can't hear you. I was distracted by your giant horse teeth."
In the choir room, Finn said, "That's it. I'm gonna find that Sebastian kid and punch him right in his stupid face!"
Artie rolled in with a rule book. He read, "Any real or perceived threat of violence, vandalism, or humiliation will be met with a swift and unquestioned disqualification of the threatening parties' team with extreme prejudice. Page 72, bylaw 15, section 6, article 44."
Blaine said, "What are they gonna do? Same as they always do, nothing."
Sugar said, "If a picture of me like that was posted online, I'd probably kill myself."
Rory said, "Twice, just to be sure I was dead."
Will said, "Guys, the more successful you get, the more garbage people make up to hurt you."
Anne Marie said, "Will, you are nothing but a lazy ass."
Santana said, "Preach."
Blaine said, "I'm gonna have to agree with Miss Tompkins on this one."
Ian said, "And me."
Claire said, "And me too!"
Anne Marie asked, "What are we gonna do about Regionals now?"
Ian said, "We need star power to beat Sebastian."
Claire said, "We need Sam Evans."
Anne said, "Sam? Where even is he? Do you think his parents will let him come back?"
"He's in Kentucky. He said on Facebook his dad got a new job and they're doing pretty okay now. What other option do we have?"
Quinn walked into Sue's office. "You wanted to see me?"
Sue said, "Q, have a seat. I, Sue Sylvester, am with child."
"Are you serious? Wow, that's amazing…and confusing. Who's the father?"
"I can't tell you that yet. The doctor has me on bovine hormones and I now have a supernatural sense of smell."
"Well, they say morning sickness can be a good sign. It means that the baby is developing properly. Saltines, herbal teas, lollipops."
Sue smiled, intrigued. "Lollipops?"
"Yeah. Weird, but to works."
"Well, Q, thank you for that condescending tone and barely helpful advice."
In Kentucky, Claire, Anne Marie and Ian went into a stripper bar and found Sam doing some male modeling.
Anne Marie said, "Oh, God, no."
An announcer said, "And now, let's give a warm welcome to White Chocolate!" Sam came out looking like a construction worker. The women cheered.
Ian said, "That's not an image I can ever get out of my head now."
Backstage, Sam said, "Look, I needed to help my family raise some extra money so we could make ends meet. Am I embarrassed that I work here? Yeah. I make my parents think that I work at a Dairy Queen."
Claire said, "Sam, we need you to come back for Regionals. Tell us you don't want it. We miss you."
Sam was in his trailer home with his parents. He told them that they needed him back. His dad said, "You had to become a man much sooner than kids your age."
Sam said, "I'm proud of everything we've done. Mom, if you cry, I won't go."
His mom said, "I'm just so happy. Is this what you want? Is this gonna make you happy?"
"You have no idea."
They hugged him and his dad kissed his head.
In the auditorium, Kurt asked, "Are you okay?"
Blaine, "I just want to focus on winning. The theme is inspiration."
Meanwhile, Karofsky was outed by the dicks in his gym. He couldn't stand the awful comments written by such retarded, schizophrenic people. One of them even shouted, "Go back in the closet!"
Blaine was singing "Cough Syrup." Karofsky put on a suit, then stood on a chair.
His dad Paul ran in and found him unconscious. "David, buddy, come on! David!"
In Figgins' office the next day, he said, "We have to be careful about how we break the news to the student body. Any act of suicides, or any attempts like David's, could induce a string of copycats."
Beiste said, "It's just so senseless."
Will said, "Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr—the need to protect your reputation is so much worse than when we were kids."
Emma said, "Yeah, and some of these people can sling their hatred and mud anonymously."
Sue said, "I knew there was something up with that kid. I knew it. All I can think of is his dad finding him."
"Guys, we were all hard on Dave. We thought he was gonna hurt Kurt. I just never thought he'd hurt himself."
Figgins said, "It wasn't our job to know."
Emma asked, "Then whose job was it?"
Mercedes said, "We should start today's meeting by praying for Karofsky and hope for a speedy recovery."
Quinn said, "We should pray for his family."
Mercedes said, "A guy from his gym saw him at Breadstix with Kurt. They texted everyone that he was gay. He couldn't take it."
Joe said, "How is he?"
"He's in the hospital, but thank God his dad found him in time."
Sam walked into the choir room. "Sam!" Tina, Quinn and Mike hugged him. "I wouldn't be back here if it wasn't important. I, uh, sort of lost my way, but true friends help you find your way back."
Santana said, "Just heard the news that Trout-y Mouth is back in town. I've been keeping a notepad just in case this day ever came. 'Welcome back, Lisa Rinna. I've missed you so much since you put your family in your mouth and skipped town. Can't tell you how many times I wanted to enjoy a crisp pickle, but couldn't find anyone to suck the lid off the jar. I assume you've been working as a baby polisher where mothers place their infants' heads to give them that newborn shine. So glad you're back. I haven't seen a smile that big since the claymation abominable snowman got his teeth clean by that cute little elf dentist.'"
"I missed you, too, Santana." He hugged the bitch and she smiled.
In the Lima Bean, Kurt and Blaine walked with Brittany and Santana to Smythe. Santana said, "So, here's how it's gonna go, from one bitch to another. All this vicious, underhanded crap has to stop."
"That's why I called you here. First, Blaine, I am so sorry about your eye."
Blaine said, "That means nothing to me."
"Second, all the Finn photos have been destroyed. I want the Warblers to win fair and square, and we're gonna take donations for the Lady Gaga Born This Way Foundation. Win, lose or draw, we're gonna dedicate our performance to Dave Karofsky."
Kurt said, "Wait for the punch. You know it's coming."
"There's no punch. Not this time. For too long, I have treated everything like a big joke."
In a flashback, Dave asked Smythe, "How do you get a guy to like you?"
"You get a guy? Please. Just stay in the closet."
They all glared at him. "It's all fun and games…till it's not."
In the auditorium, Mercedes asked, "Mr. Shue, why do you have a spoon and a jar of peanut butter?"
Sugar said, "Yeah, there's like 16 of us in here, and I'm only comfortable with sharing a spoon with half of you."
Will said, "It has come to my attention that our good friend Rory Flanagan has never tasted peanut butter."
Sugar said, "What?"
Tina asked, "Are you serious?"
Sam said, "No way."
Claire said, "You're not allergic to peanuts, are you, Rory?"
Rory said, "Thankfully, no."
Will have Rory a spoonful. "Oh, my God," he chuckled. "That is the best thing I've ever tasted." Everyone else chuckled.
Will said, "I brought you all here to remind you all that no matter how depressed you are, no matter how alone you feel, you will never stop thinking about all the great things you could have laying ahead of you."
Sam said, "Someday I want to raise enough money to buy my folks a house so that my family will never lost their home again."
Mercedes said, "I'm looking forward to seeing Rachel's children." Rachel mouthed, "Thank you."
Artie said, "I want to be there to see my kids' first steps."
Sugar said, "I want to be there to see Sex in the City Part 3."
Will said, "Wow."
Puck said, "This is kind of embarrassing, but I really do want to graduate high school."
Finn said, "I want to petition in the army to change my dad's dishonorable discharge into an honorable one."
Quinn said, "I'm looking forward to graduating Yale, maybe at the top of my class."
Santana said, "I'm looking forward to the day my grandmother loves me again."
Brittany said, "I want Lord Tubbing-ton to kick his ecstasy addiction."
Blaine said, "I'm looking forward to marriage equality in all 50 states."
Mike said, "I'm looking forward to my first dance at Carnegie Hall."
Tina said, "I just want a song." They all chuckled.
Kurt said, "I'm looking forward to seeing my dad make a difference in Congress."
Rachel said, "I'm looking forward to being friends with you all for the rest of my life."
Claire said, "I'm hoping for one day to be as famous as the rest of you. And to see my name in big letters." Will chuckled. Quinn grabbed her knee in a playful way.
Rory said, "This peanut butter is really amazing, Mr. Shue. I know it sound silly. You know what I'm looking forward to? Hopefully winning at Regionals."
The announcer called, "And now, let's welcome the judges for the 2012 Midwest Regionals. Deputy Zoning Commissioner, Melba Jackson-Wright! President of the Ohio Plumbers Union Local 109, Harl Bindorff! And central Ohio's #1 late-night horror movie host, Sven Goobles!"
Finn said, "No." And a vampire stood up. Kurt covered the side of his eyes.
The announcer called, "And now from Westerville, the Dalton Academy Warblers!"
The Warblers were singing "Stand" and "Glad You Came." Finn was the first to stand up. One of the girls from another team asked, "Why are you cheering for your competition?"
"Life is too short," he said. "You should try it some time." Some of the others stood up.
The announcer said, "And now, from Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow, the Golden Goblets." That group was singing wonderfully.
In the choir room, Puck said, "Those Golden Goblets were better than I thought they'd be."
Brittany asked, "Are you high?"
Artie said, "Show circle time, come on."
Will said, "Uh, Finn, you want to start us off?"
Finn said, "Yeah, uh…we thought a lot about what Mr. Shue said. We want to live every day to the fullest."
They all gathered and said, "Amazing!"
The announcer called, "And now, from McKinley High in Lima, the New Directions!"
They were all singing "Fly" and "Fly Away." Some of the girls later performed, "What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger." Kelly Clarkson hit. Then Rachel and Claire performed "Here's to Us" together. Hiram and LeRoy were touched.
A coffin rolled out and Sven Goobles, the vampire, got out of it and hissed. Applause and cheering occurred.
Sven Goobles announced, "I've crossed oceans of time to bring the results of this competition. In third place, from Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow, the Golden Goblets!" Applause and cheering. "And now, the moment you've all been waiting for, the 2012 Midwest Regionals champions…from McKinley High, the New Directions!" Applause and cheering again. Sugar ran to hug the vampire. Blaine and Sebastian shook hands.
Rachel shouted, "We did it!"
Kurt went to visit Dave at the hospital. Told him to transfer to a better school. Envision his life with his new partner. "Can I come in?"
Dave nodded. "They took me off 72-hour watch. I get to go home tomorrow."
"I'm really happy that you're alive, David."
"After the way I treated you last year… I made your life a living hell for months. But after what happened to me, I couldn't even take it for a week. I can't go back to that school."
"Then go to another school. It isn't gonna be easy. There are gonna be days when life just sucks, but you're gonna get through this, and if they can't accept that, screw 'em. Right? Mr. Shue gave us an assignment this week of what we want to look forward to in the future. Want to give it a try?" They close their eyes. "You are sitting in an office after you left Ohio."
"Can I be a sports agent?"
"Yeah. You're a successful sports agent. Then your partner walks in with your son or daughter. You take your kid to their first football game. You lean over to your man and you say…"
"I'm so happy right now."
Sue said, "Well, congratulations, Will."
Will said, "You've never congratulated me on anything."
"Well, your glee club was actually fantastic. Now congratulate me."
"Why?"
"I'm pregnant."
"Are you serious?"
"I think you might win Nationals this year, and I'm gonna help ya."
In the auditorium, Claire was singing Nickelback's "If Today Was Your Last Day."
Claire, Anne Marie and Ian were all singing Elton John's "I'm Still Standing" in the choir room. After that, we are introduced to Blaine's older brother, Cooper. Total ass. Handsome, though.
The next day, Blaine and Cooper were performing "Hungry Like the Wolf" with a touch of "Rio" by Duran-Duran. Afterwards, Cooper took one look at Anne Marie and smirked while raising an eyebrow. "Well, I'd certainly like to get to know you." Anne Marie chuckled nervously. Claire slowly put her hand over her mouth, moved her head and raised her eyebrows.
Blaine shouted, "Coop, you're my brother! Why can't you just support me?"
Claire said, "He's got a point, you know."
Becky walked in Sue's office. "I heard you're having a baby girl."
Sue hugged her, "Just like you."
"Can I give you a parenting tip? Try to work on your patience."
They all went to Six Flags on senior ditch day. They rode on the roller coaster, having a great time. Not much to say for this one here.
In the auditorium, Blaine found Cooper on stage. "I'm glad we got to sing one last time together before you left to be Mr. Hollywood."
"Yeah, my audition got cancelled. Michael Bay decided to go another direction. I am tough on you. But that's only because I see, I've always seen, how insanely talented you are. You're gonna do it all, Blaine. Broadway, movies, shows. It's all waiting for you."
"We are gonna get you a new audition."
"Pointing. Nice touch."
Brittany and Mike were dancing with Blaine. Will and the others clapped. He asked, "What brought this on?"
Blaine said, "Well, the Nationals theme this year is vintage, so what's more vintage than disco?
Will said, "I don't know if I ever told you guys this, but when I was in glee club, we did unadulterated disco."
Puck said, "Except for one small thing." He and the others yelled, "Disco pretty much sucks!"
In the choir room, Will's voiceover said, "We're only weeks away from graduation. Finn has talent, but not enough self-esteem. Mercedes is every bit talented as Rachel and Kurt. Santana has no focus. Puck and Brittany have no motivation. And Claire...she's great, but not confident enough."
Santana said, "Look, I just want to be famous."
In the hallway, Kurt and Mercedes were discussing colleges. A young man with a soft voice said, "Kurt Hummel? Mercedes Jones? I'm a big fan. I've seen you in all your performances, except West Side Story. I boycotted that one because you were robbed of Tony and Maria."
Kurt closed his locker smiling. "Well, hello, kind sir. I don't believe I got your name."
"Wade Adams. I go to Carmel High. I'm in Vocal Adrenaline. I know we're supposed to be enemies, but I swear I'm not here to spy. Our coach is Jesse St. James."
Mercedes said, "God, he's awful."
Wade said, "He's nothing compared to the kids at that school. Do you know how I get through it? I want to be a person I've always dreamed of being. I even have a different name: Unique."
Kurt said, "Unique sounds like a great person. I hope one day you get to have courage to be him."
"Actually, Unique is a she. That's why I want your advice. Our Regionals are this Saturday. What would you do?"
Mercedes was stunned.
Outside, Rachel was teaching Claire how to drive. It didn't really go well.
Rachel said, "Use your turn signal!"
Claire said, "That was my turn signal!" The car stopped.
"Then use your hand signal and not the one you gave me when we passed that last intersection."
Mercedes' voiceover said, "Where does Mr. Shue come off? Just because I don't want to go to New York like Rachel and star in a revival of Sister Act, doesn't mean I don't have a dream. I know what my dream is." She put on a red dress and sang "Disco Inferno" with Brittany and Santana. She said, "Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin - my dream is to be like them. To sing number one hits that inspire people. But I don't even know the first thing about getting a manager."
Will said, "The cream always rises to the top, Mercedes."
"I'm cream in here, Mr. Shue."
The next day, Santana sang "If I Can't Have You" mostly to Brittany and her love of fame. Finn still had no idea what he was going to do with his future. He was furious, but Will helped him get some ideas. So he told Rachel he wanted to join the Actors Studio with James Lipton in New York.
In another scene, Kurt and Mercedes saw Wade perform as Unique, singing "Boogie Shoes." The audience loved it. Jesse was appalled. Bastard.
Beiste said, "So, Claire, how's high school life treating you?"
Claire said, "About as well as you'd expect."
"Thought so. Hey, do you mind if we have a talk, woman to woman."
"No, I guess not."
"So, if you love a man, do you think you ought to marry him?"
"Maybe."
"There have to be some good reasons."
"A few might be."
"But sometimes, you just have to take that leap."
"Ma'am, I'm only 16!"
Rachel, Kurt, Mercedes and Santana were all singing "How Will I Know?" to honor Whitney Houston.
Will wrote Whitney's name on the white board.
Sam asked, "Didn't she have a lot of problems?"
Mercedes said, "She had a hard life, Sam."
Brittany was singing "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" with Santana. No surprise. "I love dancing with Santana, but you guys are good dancers, too."
Meanwhile, Kurt went to a records shop where he met Chandler Kiehl. "I go to North Lima High."
"We're doing a Whitney Houston tribute this week."
"Oh, my God. You have to do One Moment in Time. That song is amazing."
The next day, Rachel and Santana were singing "So Emotional."
Kurt was getting texts from Chandler. "You have a great asp," which is a type of snake. Kurt smiled.
Blaine was being extraordinarily stupid. And Claire gave a rousing rendition of "I'm Every Woman." Mercedes and Tina sung and danced with her.
In the hallway, Santana was at her locker and Rachel stood behind her and said, "Hi." Santana turned and said, "Hey."
"You know, you can tell a lot about a person by looking into their locker."
"Are you stalking me?"
"No. You know we pretty much blew it, right? Three years going at each other's throats when we could've been singing together, killing it in glee?"
"Well, we hated each other. Actually, I hated you. But yes. You're right. Our duet was a truckload of awesome, and who cares that it took three years? I mean, we still have plenty of time to do it again."
"We have 42 days until graduation. Half of that's gonna be prepping for Nationals, and that was it."
"Oh, crap. I think I just realized I'm gonna miss you. Oh, God, say something irritating so I can get the taste of this out of my head, please."
Rachel smiled, "It's okay."
"I like it when you sing, and hey, you were the only person in this school besides me who's willing to kill their best friend to get to the top."
"Not necessarily…but yeah. Will you do me a favor?" She pulled a card out. "Will you put this up?"
"You want me to put a picture of you in my locker?"
"Well, we may not be able to sing together again, but we have 42 days left to be friends." She gives it to her. "I'm gonna give you a hug. It'll be quick." She hugged her. "I'll see you in the choir room."
"Okay." Rachel took off and Santana put the photo on her locker door.
When it was prom night, Brittany decided that the theme should be dinosaurs. No one else seemed too keen on the idea. Only Santana seemed to like it. What idiots. Rachel wanted to have a little anti-prom party. Kurt and Blaine liked that idea, so they all went to a hotel room with Claire, Anne Marie and Ian.
At the prom, Tina and Mike walked in together. Mike said, "This is pretty awesome. I actually love dinosaurs."
On the stage, Brittany and two others were performing Weird Al's Jurassic Park.
At the Red Rooster Hotel, Rachel opened a door. Kurt was wearing a top hat. Blaine was wearing a tuxedo. Claire and Anne Marie put on their dresses. Ian was wearing his suit.
Kurt said, "Oh, look, there are chocolates on the pillows."
Blaine said, "Ooh, they have room service."
Anne Marie said, "Oh, and a minibar."
Ian said, "So, uh, what should we do now?"
Claire said, "We could play charades. Or Pictionary. Or even go fish if we had a deck of cards."
Blaine said, "All very natural friend activities."
Rachel said, "Well, whatever we do, it'll be better than prom."
Kurt said, "Yeah, who wants to be in that stupid old gym, anyway?"
Blaine said, "Well, I wouldn't mind watching a little TV. Maybe some Bravo?"
Claire said, "Oh, I know. We could watch The Golden Girls prom episode. What a Difference a Date Makes."
Rachel smiled at her. Kurt said, "I like that idea, but I don't know if it's gonna be airing tonight."
Claire said, "We could watch the Prom movie from last year."
Anne Marie said, "I don't think so."
Rachel said, "Well, I'd love to show you all my dress. I wouldn't want it to go to waste. It's in my car, I'll go get it."
At the gym, Santana was singing "Love You Like a Love Song." Mercedes and Sam were dancing together.
In the hotel room, Claire and Anne Marie were singing "Up On the Roof" by the Drifters. There was a knock on the door. Claire opened it. "Finn?"
"Hey, Claire." He walked in. "Where's Rachel?"
Anne Marie said, "Oh, she's in the bathroom. I guess she must still be putting on her dress."
Rachel came out wearing the most beautiful dress anybody's ever laid their eyes on. "Okay, let the extravaganza begin." Finn was in awe.
Claire said, "Wow. You look gorgeous, Rachel."
"Aw, thanks, Claire."
Finn said, "I'll keep it simple. I love you, you're beautiful. Prom sucks without you." He gave her a corsage. "Prom sucks without all of you. This could be the last time we're all together like this. I want to dance with my girl and my friends."
After the others left, they walked in the gym. Will and Emma were dancing together, saw them walk in and smiled.
Brittany said, "So glad you guys could make it."
Finn said, "Better late than never, right? Come on, let's dance."
Claire said, "Got any 3s?"
Anne said, "Nope, go fish. Got any 2s?"
Ian said, "Go fish. Got any 7s?"
Claire said, "Ah you got me." She put her cards face down. "I miss Henry."
Anne Marie said, "Well, Claire, we miss him, too."
Claire said, "It's just not gonna be the same without some of the others."
Ian said, "That's okay, Claire, you're with us."
Claire wanted to have a little fun, so she made some cardboard crowns for Anne Marie and Ian and made them king and queen.
Anne asked, "What are you doing?"
"We haven't had our own prom king and queen yet. First, we need a king. Ian Rivers." He put it on him.
Ian smiled giddily, "Cool."
"And now we need a queen, hmm. Anne Marie Tompkins, I crown you as queen of our own prom."
Anne smiled, "Wow. I'm so happy."
Claire asked, "What do you say we get out of here?"
They all walked in the gym proudly. Tina poured herself a glass of punch and smiled when she saw them. Most of the other students clapped and cheered. Anne Marie waved. Will and Emma smiled at them. Sue is so stupid.
Figgins announced, "This year's prom king is…hmm. Mr. Finn Hudson." Everyone clapped and cheered.
Blaine shouted, "Go, Finn!"
"This year's prom queen is…with another number of write-in votes for the second year in a row, I would like to welcome to the stage…Miss Rachel Berry."
Rachel was stunned, but everyone clapped and cheered. As well they should. Rachel deserved to be prom queen, after everything she did this year. She helped Kurt try to win the student election, even though he wrongfully gave the position to Brittany, she helped Finn try to find his passion and dream, she even helped Shelby with Jack. A girl told her, "Good job."
Anne Marie said, "Yeah, Rachel!"
Ian said, "Whoo!"
Claire said, "All right!"
When Rachel was dancing with Finn, she was worried that someone might purposely spill blood on her. "Is this some kind of joke?"
Finn said, "Hey, look at me. You're beautiful, you're sexy, and you really earned this. You're an inspiration to everyone in this room, from where you began to where you are now. You're amazing."
Mike said, "Hey, are you crying?"
Tina said, "I just don't want it to end."
"Prom night?"
"Everything. This whole year. I never want it to end."
Henry walked in the gym. Claire ran to him. They kissed. Mercedes said, "Praise."
Sam said, "Somehow I knew he'd show up."
They were all in Chicago for Nationals. Poor Mercedes got food poisoning and a fever. Will walked in, "How bad is it?"
Sue said, "She has a 101-degree fever."
Santana said, "We went to Chipotle and she wanted to try some dive called Señora Salsation."
"We need to have a plan."
Will said, "Quinn, you're stepping in."
Quinn said, "No, no, no. I can't."
"The Trouble-Tones need you."
Tina said, "And you're better thank you think you are."
Will said, "Tina, you too."
Mercedes said, "Mr. Shue, this is my last performance. I don't want to miss it."
Sue said, "Amen to that, sister." She decided to help her.
Everyone was completely stressing out in another room. Beiste said, "We have a problem."
Claire said, "Gee, and everything was going so great up until now."
Will said, "This is a good thing. A great thing. Even though you're all arguing, it's about the work. There is so much passion in this room. You really want this."
Tina said, "Mr. Shue, the first spot is the death slot. We have to be amazing."
Quinn said, "Yeah, Edge of Glory's a bitch."
The next day, everyone gathered around. Will said, "Finn?"
Finn said, "Mr. Shue. We were wondering what we wanted to win this for, and we all said the same thing. We want to win this for you. And I know Figgins gives our the Teacher of the Year Award every year, but none of us need to think about that."
Will said, "Thank you, Finn. All of you. I love you guys so much. Showtime. Come on, bring it in."
Mercedes opened the door. "Now I know you're not doing a show circle without me."
Tina said, "Mercedes! You're alive."
"Yeah, thanks to Sue."
Sue said, "Well, it's nothing a little TLC can't fix."
Quinn said, "Thank God. I do not want to fall on my face during that number."
Mercedes said, "Screw that. This is our last time performing together. You're doing it, and so are you, Tina. I'm not taking no for an answer."
They all put their hands up. "Amazing!"
Beiste was eating chocolates. Sue said, "Dick Butkus, chew with your mouth closed."
"Sorry. I'm as nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs."
The announcer said, "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the 48th annual National Show Choir Competition! And now, the judges: America's sweetheart, Lindsay Lohan! Hollywood gossip legend, Perez Hilton! And city council member, Martin Fong!" Also known as Rex Lee.
Quinn said, "The Unholy Trinity."
Santana said, "Starting together, ending together."
Brittany said, "Just the way it should be."
The announcer called, "From McKinley High in Lima, Ohio, the New Directions!"
They were all singing "Edge of Glory."
Finn said, "This is your moment. Three years in the making. Take it."
Rachel was singing "It's All Coming Back to Me Now." To her surprise, Carmen Tibideaux walked in.
Everyone gathered together and they all sang "The Wayfarers" from Skyway Flyer. Paradise! The crowd went wild. Tibideaux whistled.
Kurt walked in with Mercedes and holding a white tulip.
Mercedes said, "We cane to tell Unique to break a leg and give her this flower."
Wade said, "Well, Unique has left the building. Try as I might, I can't conjure her."
Kurt said, "Wade, this is just stage fright. You were a smash last time."
"That was different! Nobody knew Unique. All I ever wanted to do was be my true self and sing."
Mercedes said, "You may not be able to handle it, but Unique can."
Kurt said, "You have to move through that fear and expectation. That's what real stars do."
Wade took the flower. "Aren't we supposed to be enemies?"
Mercedes said, "That's not how we roll in the New Directions."
Kurt said, "Not our style."
Wade said, "Ruby rose or sugar red?"
"Sugar red."
Mercedes said, "Definitely. Break a leg."
Kurt said, "Break a heel."
The announcer said, "And now, please welcome from Carmel High in Akron, Ohio, Vocal Adrenaline!" They all performed with Wade in his Unique outfit. They all did "Starships" and "Pinball Wizard." Kurt and Mercedes stood up. The judges were thrilled.
In the judges' room, Martin walked in. "I have a confession to make. I am a show choir junkie."
Lindsay said, "Whoa, whoa, whoa. Oh, my God! Seriously? Did you just blog about me?"
Perez said, "It already has over 3 million hits. If you don't like show choir, Lindsay Lohan, why are you even here?"
Martin said, "If you have to ask why a 12-time Teen Choice nominee is a celebrity judge, then you don't really know what the word celebrity means."
Lindsay said, "That's right. I was robbed of Freaky Friday. And I'm here, Perez, because I care about young artists chasing impossible dreams. I know them. I feel them. I was them."
Perez said, "I for one was moved by the Scale Blazers' haunting homage to Starlight Express."
Martin said, "You know who I was really impressed with? The New Directions. They had so much energy. Oh, but last year in New York, they let the new guys perform. It was awesome, but they still lost."
Lindsay said, "You know, I liked them, too. But is there anything better than someone making a comeback?"
Perez said, "Please. I'm Vocal Adrenaline all the way. That Unique kid is a star. Just imagine how much it would mean to see him/her on national television."
Martin said, "This isn't televised."
Lindsay said, "What? I'm here and there isn't even a red button to push? Really? I'm seriously firing my manager."
Martin said, "This is serious."
Perez said, "We need to vote now."
Lindsay said, "I know who I'm voting for. What about you, Fong-er?"
Wow. Martin was at a loss for words. Perez Hilton is just a dumb, stupid ass!
Jesse ran to Carmen. "Excuse me. Miss Tibideaux? I'm Jesse St. James, I'm the coach of Vocal Adrenaline. I sang for you two years ago. You said I showed promise."
"I'm sure you did. But I see hundreds of people every day."
"I'm not here for me. There's something you need to know. Rachel Berry is the most talented person I've ever met, bar none. If anyone's gonna be a star someday, it's her. She'll make a great contribution to NYADA. You won't regret it. Anyway, thanks for your time."
"Giants in the Sky. You sang Giants in the Sky from Into the Woods. You ran into complications with your breath work, but your passion and vocal range were admirable. Good luck to you."
Everyone gathered on stage.
The announcer said, "And now, it's time to award this year's individual MVP award. From Vocal Adrenaline, Wade "Unique" Adams!" Applause and cheering. Unique smiled. The other members were so happy for her. "And now, a round of applause for the top three finalists. In third place…the Portland Scale Blazers!" Applause and cheering. "Congratulations to both teams. The 2012 National Show Choir Champion is…from McKinley High, the New Directions!" Confetti popped. Everyone was cheering and applauding loudly. Rachel and Will hugged. Mercedes and Santana hugged. Sam kissed Puck's head. Sue pointed in approval.
When they all got back, everyone was waiting for them. There was a big "Congratulations." They had cups. Instead of Slushies, there was confetti. Tina and Mike kissed. Two girls kissed Rory's cheeks. A hockey player hugged Kurt. Santana and Becky gave each other the thumbs up. Brittany and Santana kissed. Rachel and Finn also kissed. Sue shook hands with Figgins. Roz glared at her. Will and Emma were ready to get intimate. In the choir room, they popped the bubbly and Santana kissed the side of Artie's head. Claire hugged Anne Marie and Ian. Then the next day, Rachel signed another girl's yearbook. Will opened the glass case and put the tall trophy inside it.
Anne Marie and Ian walked. Ian asked, "What do you think Figgins wants with us?"
Anne said, "Maybe we're getting a key to the city or something."
Figgins said, "Anne Marie Tompkins and Ian Rivers. Take a seat." They sat down. "As co-coaches of the national victorious New Directions group, please accept these official McKinley High School teaching licenses and bumper stickers."
Ian said, "Wow."
"McKinley is having a very special event tomorrow and I am requesting that New Directions perform."
Anne Marie said, "Yeah, okay."
Ian said, "Yeah, absolutely. What?"
Figgins asked, "Can you keep a secret?"
The next night, everyone was all dressed up.
Will said, "Thank you. For everything. This year has been amazing."
Emma said, "My pleasure. Literally."
Mrs. Hagberg announced her retirement. Figgins said, "And now, Teacher of the Year, please welcome to the stage, to announce the winner, Finchel."
Rachel and Finn walked to the podium.
Finn said, "Hi, the 2012 William McKinley High School Teacher of the Year is…"
Rachel said, "Mr. Will Schuester!"
Applause and cheering. Emma kissed his cheek. Sue shook his hand and said, "Way to go, buddy."
Will got up and hugged all of them. Then he lifted his award.
One week left in the entire school year. Artie said, "National champs, baby!" Will wrote "Goodbye." "Graduation is only a few days away."
Kurt's voiceover said, "When I first started at McKinley, I was in the closet. But McKinley has made me a stronger, more socially-conscious, fashion forward person. Now if I can just get through the next few days without turning into an emotional train wreck."
In the auditorium, he met Burt. "Dad, why did you want to meet me in here? Did my NYADA letter come?"
"Not yet. I wanted to give you your graduation present. You know, I read you to bed, put cartoons on your TV when you were bored."
"You did pretty good."
"I am proud of everything we have done together."
"Me too."
Tina and Brittany walked on stage.
"Oh, God, Dad. Please don't do this."
"Sit down and enjoy your present."
Then they were all dancing to "Single Ladies."
Kurt laughed and clapped. In a classroom, he walked in with Blaine. "It was the best graduation gift ever."
Blaine said, "Are we okay?"
"Yeah. I told you. I'm never saying goodbye to you."
Friendly reminder: not a really good idea to try long-distance.
In the library, Rachel gave Kurt his yearbook. "Sorry about my calligraphy. Some tears were shed. I know I said we'd wait two days, but…"
Kurt opened the book. "Dear Kurt, I love you so much. You have challenged and inspired me. You are the bravest, truest person I've ever met. And I will never apologize for who I am or how I look. Even with this nose." He looked at her fondly. "I love your nose." He then read on, "I hope we go to New York together because I don't know how I could survive without my best friend. That's what you are to me. I love you forever. See you on Broadway. Rachel Berry."
They smiled and hold hands. "You're my best friend."
"So a little birdie told me that you won Nationals." Rachel turned and saw… "Well deserved if ever I saw one."
"Hey!" Rachel hugged Shelby. "I was afraid you weren't gonna make it. What took you so long?"
"The plane to McKinley kinda got jet lagged. So, did you get your NYADA letter yet?"
"No, not yet, but they'll be here. What about you? What brings you back here besides graduation?"
"Well, as you know, Jack and I are dating."
"Yeah, I do know. I got the postcard you gave me at Christmas. Hey, since you guys have been going out, are you two talking about music and math all at once?"
"Sometimes. But most of the time, we just…" She whispered in her ear.
Rachel covered her mouth. "You are just too much for me."
Shelby laughed.
"Well, it's good to see you, Shelby."
"You too. Although I am a bit surprised to find out that you and Finn are engaged."
"Yeah, I mean to tell you about that."
"Rachel…"
"Look, I know what you're gonna tell me. Okay, I've heard it all before. But I love Finn. He completes me. And I always want him with me."
"Well, I have a big decision to make, too. I want to…tell Jack that I love him."
"Wow, that is big. Well, whenever you find the right time, I hope it'll be perfect."
"I have a big surprise for you. Happy graduation, Rachel."
Another familiar voice said, "Room for one more?" Rachel turned around and hugged Jack. "Hey! Oh, you smell so good."
In the choir room, Shelby said, "First of all, I just want to tell you all how proud of you I am. Not just for winning Nationals, but everything that came along with it. It doesn't matter if you're gay or straight. What matters is that you're friends. And you're in it for the long haul."
Will said, "Shelby, what have you been doing in New York?"
In a flashback, Shelby and Jack had made love in their living room, on their kitchen counter and in their bedroom. When they fell out of bed, Shelby said, "Aah!" passionately. Back to the present, she said, "Let's just say I had a lot of fun. I think it only fair you all should know that…Jack and I are boyfriend and girlfriend." They held hands. They all clapped and cheered. Finn said, "Yes! About time!"
Rachel smiled.
Will said, "We're all really happy for you, Shelby."
Shelby said, "Thanks. And in the spirit of graduation, we've arranged a special number."
Jack whispered, "Wait. Do we have to do this now?"
"I have to. It's my graduation present to Rachel."
"Okay, then. Hit it."
They were singing "I'll Cover You" from RENT. Mercedes put her hand over her heart. Will smiled. Kurt and Blaine were lip-syncing.
Rachel said, "Kiss him, Shelby."
Shelby kissed him. They clapped and cheered again.
Shelby's voiceover said, "Well, graduation is finally here. I am so happy for Rachel. She really stepped up this year. Somehow I really feel like I have, too. I told Rachel at the beginning of the year that I played Maria 18 times, but I never thought I would find the perfect Tony. I love him. I really do. I actually love him."
In the hallway, Santana said, "Seems to me like Ms. Corcoran and Mr. Masterson have been doing it for months. I ship it. I do."
Brittany said, "Corcoran and Masterson sitting in a tree. K-I-S…sing."
Santana shrugged and Claire said, "Well, she was close." Anne smiled.
Mercedes might get a record deal and Mike got a scholarship. Santana still had no idea what she was gonna do with her life after graduation.
In Breadstix, Brittany and Santana were having dinner with Santana's mother, Maribel. "When Santana came out to us, I said I should've known. For Halloween, she dressed up like Jesse from Full House."
Brittany said, "So you really didn't care?"
"I care that my baby's happy."
Santana said, "I wish Abuela felt the same."
"I know. It sucks, mija."
Shelby and Jack were having a very special dinner together.
Shelby said, "Jack, I have something I want to say. I didn't really invite you over to my apartment last year to do song selections. I wanted you to come over because I really wanted to see you."
"Heh. Well, uh, since we're confessing things, I only really wanted to sing to impress you."
"Jack, you always impress me. And you are the reason I know how to cook."
They laughed.
Jack asked her, "Why me?"
"What do you mean?"
"I always figured you'd be into more sophisticated men. You know, musical professionals, Broadway showstoppers, like Will."
Shelby smiled and said, "None of them were you." Jack smiled.
"Look, Shelby, we've been dating for a few months now, and…well, this is kind of hard for me to say."
Shelby looked worried. "Oh, God."
"I think it's about time for you to meet my parents."
"Oh! Oh, that? Wow. Your parents. Um… I don't know, Jack. What if they don't like me?"
"Come on, they have to. Because I like you."
"I like you, too."
The next day, Rachel said, "Oh, my God. You still haven't told Jack how you feel yet?!"
"The timing wasn't right. I still haven't given him the watch yet either, and if that weren't enough, I have to meet his parents."
"Wow. His parents. That's a big step."
"Heh, I thought that telling him I love him was gonna be the scariest thing. Meeting his parents is way scarier. I don't even know what to wear or bring."
"Look, being hated is often something you may or may not get used to. Take it from someone who knows. And watch or no watch, Jack is crazy about you. He'll definitely understand the effort. He knows you'd do anything for him."
"When did you get to be so wise?"
Finn's voiceover said, "I had no idea who I wanted to do, who I was. It wasn't the past I was scared of, it was the future. I'd call my high school career a success. I got a football title, a national champion ship, and I never hurt anyone. I'm marrying a great girl, and going with her and my stepbrother."
James Lipton appeared. "Finn Hudson. I was very moved by your letter and application, Finn. You would be an exceptional case, should we accept you."
Will said, "Hey. Just finishing up."
Finn said, "Dear Finn, great knowing you. Are you kidding? I'm like the best man at your wedding."
"It's not that bad. I tried, but I couldn't get two words out without falling apart."
"Well, I don't need a bunch of blah-blah in a book to remember you anyway."
They shook hands.
Will said, "I heard you singing in the shower in the locker room. I needed a male lead. I put the pot in your locker and blackmailed you into joining. I'm very sorry. I hated myself for doing it, but I wanted you to know the truth before you left."
Finn just stood there in silence and finally said, "You are so much cooler than I ever thought you were."
Will said, "Heh. Get out of here." He chuckled.
Carole pulled out Finn's graduation robe.
Quinn was walking down the hallway thinking about what she was going to do. She got into Yale, that was definitely an accomplishment. When she told everyone, she said she couldn't have one it without them. Brittany and Santana were, of course, the most happy for her. The look on Mercedes' face when she told them. She found Rachel. "This freshman just hugged me and told me to never change. If it wasn't for glee club, you and I might never have been friends."
"Still so weird, having you call me a friend."
Quinn gave her a letter.
"What's this?"
"I'm hoping that we stay in touch."
"Thank you. That is so sweet." They hugged.
"I'm happy that you and Finn are together. You guys are meant to be."
"Funny. That's what I always thought about you and Puck."
"Ancient history."
"Look, I'm just saying that whenever you two were together, you were always at your best."
Puck said, "My head is like a roach motel. Once the info checks in, it never checks out."
"The Puck I fell in love with had swagger."
"You still earn your Brownies badge for helping me."
"I'm not here for sympathy. I'm here because I love you."
"Guess I kind of ruined that experience, huh?"
"Will you let me kiss you?"
"Guess I'd be kind of rude if I refused." They kissed.
Roz said, "You and I are never gonna like each other, Sue Sylvester. But you and I know that this school has an idiot for a principal."
Quinn walked into Sue's office one last time. Sue gave Quinn her Cheerios uniform to keep. "I'm retiring this uniform," Sue said. "You know, when I first laid eyes on you, Q, you reminded me of a young Sue Sylvester. But I was wrong. You're nothing like me. You're better. You're gonna go far, kiddo, and I'll be happy watching you do it."
Quinn got emotional and hugged the bitch. "I'm gonna miss you."
"Well, I don't know how that would be possible, but thank you."
That night, Shelby walked to a house. "Oh, dear God." Her heart was pounding. "I can't do this." She took a deep breath and knocked on the door.
The door opened. Jack said, "You came."
"I did."
"Come in."
Shelby walked in. "Wow. This place is almost better than my apartment."
"You look all proper."
"Yeah, well, I couldn't decide what to wear. You seriously remember what I wore the very first day of McKinley?"
"I remember how beautiful you looked."
"Heh." She took off her coat and put it on the rack.
"Black and purple. Those are your colors."
Shelby smiled. She kissed him and moaned.
A woman cleared her throat. They looked at her. "Is this how you always greet your dinner guests, Jack?"
Jack said, "Mom. Um…"
Shelby said, "Oh. You must be, um…"
A man walked by. "What's going on here?"
Jack walked to his parents. "Um, Shelby, these are my parents, Dennis and Cathy. Mom, Dad, Shelby Corcoran, my girlfriend."
Shelby said, "Hi. Mr. and Mrs. Masterson." She took her shoes off and put them beside the carpet. "Uh, I hope it's okay that I brought some champagne. My sister is graduating high school and you know how crazy these celebrations are."
Dennis said, "Well, Shelby, Jack has told us a lot about you." They shake hands. "Great to finally meet you and put a face to the name."
Cathy glared at her. "You're not from around here, are you, Shelby?"
"Actually, I live in New York now…with your son." She felt her cheeks burn. "Uh, we, um…uh…well. It's plain to see where Jack gets his good looks from." She giggled nervously. "Uh, sir, did you want to take this?"
They were all seated for dinner.
Dennis said, "So, Shelby, I understand you were a high school teacher for a time."
"Yes. I used to coach the glee club at Carmel High."
"Oh, yes. I believe it was called Vocal Adrenaline."
Cathy said, "Vocal Adrenaline." She scoffed.
"Yeah, I don't coach that anymore. I got tired of it. I moved to McKinley to start fresh, to start a life with my sister."
"Tell me, Shelby, did you ever teach your Carmel kids any manners?"
"Excuse me?"
"Well, from what I heard, Vocal Adrenaline has a reputation of not being the most gracious team in all of Ohio."
Dennis said, "Catherine."
Jack said, "Mom, Shelby isn't like that."
Shelby said, "Honey."
Cathy said, "Your sister, Rachel Berry, is it? I bet it must've been worth it to reconnect with her after giving her up like that."
Dennis said, "Catherine…"
Shelby said, "My parents gave her up. I just went along with because I was a minor back then. There wasn't really anything I could do."
Jack said, "Mom, Shelby is really trying here."
Cathy said, "With a bottle of champagne and a make-out session. Great first impression."
Shelby said, "Mrs. Masterson, with all due respect, I left Vocal Adrenaline because I was bored with them. I wasn't expecting your son to come start at McKinley, but I'm glad that he did. I'd be lost without him." She held his hand. "And there's nothing I wouldn't do for him."
Jack smiled.
Shelby moved her hand on her bed. Jack said, "Yeah, I think I did a good job. I didn't overdo it, though, did I? You know, two years ago, I didn't have the guts to ask you out, but I don't know. Something about you and Rachel really helped me…bulk up. "
"You have no idea how into you I am. It doesn't matter to me if you're shy or not. I've always accepted you for who you are. You make me so damn happy."
"I guess you could say I'm like Wolverine, but without the claws. My dad really seems to like you."
"Well, it's clear your mom doesn't."
"Sorry. Maybe she'll come around. How happy and into me are you?"
"Does this answer your question?" And she kissed him. Then looked at the clock. "Oh, my God. Jack, look at what time it is! We're gonna be late." She stood up. Jack got out of bed.
Puck and the others were waiting for his test results. When Mrs. Doosenbury opened the door, Puck took the paper. "C-minus! That's a Puckerman A-plus! I'm graduating!" They cheered and Kurt hugged Doosenbury. They all walked to the auditorium singing "Glory Days."
Figgins started announcing the graduating class. "Michael Chang, Jr." Mike's parents were applauding.
"Quinn Fabray."
Quinn hugged Emma. Quinn's mom was clapping happily.
"Mercedes Jones. Noah Puckerman." Noah said, "Thank you."
"Santana Lopez." Santana told Emma, "Thanks."
"Kurt Hummel." Blaine gave Kurt a handkerchief.
Burt shouted, "That's my boy!" He and Mike's dad did a high-five.
"Finn Hudson." Carole clapped.
"Rachel Berry."
Shelby shouted, "Whoo! That's my girl!"
Emma said, "Congratulations."
Shelby and Jack clapped and hugged.
Rachel and Finn kissed. Anne Marie and Ian smiled at them.
Figgins announced, "The McKinley High graduating class of 2012!"
Applause and cheers were met at that. Will and Beiste did a high-five as well. Mercedes hugged Quinn and told her, "I love you so much."
Shelby and Jack were in the choir room with Rachel. "I'm too nervous."
Shelby said, "Honey, they would be crazy not to accept you."
Kurt and Finn were in a classroom with Burt and Carole.
Finn said, "I kinda want to wait."
Kurt asked, "For how long?"
"Forever. I mean, this is the moment before we know. I'll go first." He picked up his letter and opened it. "I didn't get in."
Carole said, "Ohh."
Kurt picked up his letter and opened it. "I didn't get in, either."
Burt looked angry. "I ought to give that Carmen Tibideaux a piece of my mind."
Carole said, "Burt…"
Jack said, "I wanted to show you before." He pulled out his teaching documents. He really was a creative consultant of a sort.
Rachel looked worried. Shelby said, "Well, uh…that explains a lot."
Rachel took a breath and opened her letter. "I got in."
Shelby said, "You got in!" She hugged her and spun her around.
Jack said, "I knew it!" He hugged her.
Rachel laughed. Her voice over said, "You know, some dreams are a lot more complicated than real life. I can't go to NYADA with Finn because it'll remind him of his rejection, and going there without Kurt would be like remaking the Beaches movie with Bette Midler's character. Maybe next year, we'll all go together. I used to think Broadway was my one and only love. I'm so glad something made me come to my senses. I only wish Kurt got into NYADA, too. And I'm really glad my sister found true love. Maybe the main reason why I was so happy was because of Finn. Well, if Shelby's happy, I'm happy."
Santana was cleaning out her locker. Her mother walked by and said, "Come on, you're gonna be late for your celebration."
"It's just dinner with you and Dad."
"You don't want to keep any of this?"
"Nope."
Mrs. Lopez pulled out a red envelope. "Your graduation present."
"Okay, hold up. Have you had this money the whole time? Why aren't you driving a Lexus?"
"Because for the last 18 years, I've been saving all my extra change, tax rebates and Christmas bonuses so I could help you pay for college."
"But I got a scholarship."
"If you had told me that sooner, I would've bought more shoes."
"You know what? Keep it, then. Go on a trip with Dad or something. I don't need it anyway. I'm not going to college."
"Then use it to go to New York. I trust your judgment."
Santana hugs her.
"I would love for you to go to college, but it's not my choice. This is your first moment of adulthood, mi amor."
Tina and Mike kissed. Then Mike's parents walked to them. Chang Sr said, "Your mother and I thought we'd surprise you wit ha celebratory dinner."
Mike's mother said, "I even convinced him to eat Italian."
Mike's father gave him a pamphlet. Visual Asian Arts. "I'm so proud to see the man my boy has become. Your love of dance has awakened me." They hug. Tina and Mrs Chang hug.
In the Lima Bean, Shelby was sitting across from Jack again.
"So," Jack asked, "why are we here at the Lima Bean?"
"Breadstix is way too fancy a place," Shelby sighed. "Jack, for the past couple of months, I have been… I was trying to find something for you that was impossible to find. I went to every store I could think of, I dialed every male jeweler I could find… But this was the best I could do." She pulled out a box. "I was going to give it to you for Christmas, but…there was a lot of paperwork."
Jack opened it and revealed a shiny new black watch with a bright silver circle. "You got me a watch?"
"I know, it's not anything like your grandfather would've wanted."
Jack put it on. "I think he would've really liked this. You went through all that trouble for me?"
Shelby shrugged, "I guess I just couldn't help myself."
"This is the best present I could ever ask for…for any occasion."
"Oh, dear God, is this the part where we play that game when we count to three and then say something at the exact same time?"
Jack chuckled.
"One…"
"Two…"
"Three."
They both inhaled and said at the same time, "I love you." They smiled and then kissed. Then, all of a sudden, the coffee maker exploded. The barista said, "Hey, free coffee for everyone!" The entire place cheered and clapped. Shelby and Jack kept on kissing.
Hiram and LeRoy met Shelby again. "Hiram, Leroy. It's been a while."
Hiram said, "Shelby. And who is this strapping gentleman?"
LeRoy said, "Ooh."
Shelby said, "This is Jack Masterson. My best friend, my boyfriend, and the man that I love."
Hiram said, "Oh, you are gorgeous."
LeRoy said, "Husky."
Jack chuckled.
Rachel said, "Well, I'm a high school graduate and you're in love. So, how was dinner with the parents?"
Shelby said, "Ah, about as well as you'd expect. His mom hates me."
"Oh. Sorry. Well, good news. His dad likes you, so that has to count for something, right?"
"And since you got into NYADA, I will be seeing you in New York as well."
"So this isn't goodbye."
"I never want to say goodbye, least of all to you. And about you and Finn…if you really want to marry him…then I guess you're old enough to make your own decisions, and I support you. I love you."
"I love you, too, Shelby." They hugged. "Jack." And they hugged.
Finn drove Rachel to the train station. "Why are we stopping here?"
"You're gonna get on that train and go to New York. Your dads will meet you there."
"Don't you want to get married?"
"The thought of you not going to NYADA for a year because of me makes me feel sick. You're going there in the fall. You're not deferring."
"But what are you gonna do?"
"I need to take the chance to redeem my dad."
"What, the army? Are you insane? I can't believe this is happening right now!"
"You're gonna get on that train and go to New York. That's how much I love you."
"I love you so much."
"I love you forever."
They kiss. Rachel walked to everyone and hugged them all goodbye.
Rachel, Shelby and Jack all got on the train to New York. They all saw them off. Claire waved, "Good luck, Rachel!" Anne Marie said, "So long!" Finn ran with the train. Rachel was back in New York.
