Orienteering Exercise
The next morning, Lincoln, Clyde, the other two Naranja Academy students, Ms. Briar, Carmine, Kieran, and the caretaker were gathered outside the community center.
"Morning, everyone; did you sleep well?" asked Ms. Briar.
"Yes, Ms. Briar." Lincoln, Clyde, and the two students replied.
"Today, you will be joined by our two students from Blueberry Academy." said Ms. Briar, motioning to Carmine and Kieran. "Go, on, you two; time to introduce yourselves." Carmine looked at Lincoln and Clyde.
"Hi, I'm Carmine." said Carmine. "It's a pleasure to meet all you outsiders...I mean, visitors from Paldea." She looks at Kieran.
"I-I'm Kieran." said Kieran, nervously.
"Carmine and Kieran actually grew up here, so ask them for help if you need anything." said the caretaker; he turned towards Carmine and Kieran. "And you two better be of real help, you hear me."
"Aye Aye." replied Carmine.
"R-Right." replied Kieran.
"Now that that's settled, why don't I tell you all a bit about what we have planned for you today." said the caretaker. "This school trip of yours will be an exercise of orienteering. First, we will split you into pairs, then each pair will be tasked into finding three signboards located around the land of Kitakami. On each signboard, you'll find snippets of an old folklore passed down here in Kitakami; read them all and learn a bit about our home."
"To prove you've completed the task, we ask that each pair take a snapshot together in front of these signboards with their phone or camera." said the caretaker. "Take a photo in front of each of the three signboards to complete your mission. It's a self-guided tour of Kitakami. Learn all about its rich history." He turned towards Ms. Briar. "Much more fun than sitting around and listening to me ramble on and on, eh?"
"Wonderful; what an innovative idea for a group activity." said Ms. Briar. The caretaker looked towards the Naranja Academy students.
"Oh, and I've got a gift for each of you as well." said the caretaker. He walks to Lincoln, Clyde, and the other two students and gives them what appeared to be selfie sticks. "These are Roto-Sticks; I hear these things are all the rage in the big cities. Use them when you take those photos."
"Remember that one of the goals of this trip is to deepen the ties between our two schools." said Ms. Briar. "It seems like having someone who knows the area well would be a big help. That being said, let's try to maximize the number of interschool pairs, okay? Time to mingle."
"What should we do now, Lincoln?" asked Clyde.
"I guess pair up with Kieran and Carmine." said Lincoln. They both then walk over to the Blueberry Academy students who notice them approaching.
"So, your name is Clyde, right?" Carmine asked Clyde.
"Yeah, that's me." said Clyde.
"And what's your name?" Carmine asked Lincoln.
"It's Lincoln." Lincoln answered.
"And I'm guessing you two want to pair up with us poor, lonely Blueberry students, right?" asked Carmine.
"Well, the caretaker did point out that you two grew up here, so that makes you both ideal partners to pair up with since you know the area better than us." said Lincoln.
"That's pretty smart thinking for someone who dyes their hair white." said Carmine.
"It's not dye; this is my actual hair color." said Lincoln.
"Yeah, right!" said Carmine.
"He's telling the truth." said Clyde.
"Really?" asked Kieran.
"Yeah." said Lincoln. "Now let's just focus on the assignment."
"So, who's paired up with whom?" asked Clyde.
"As much as I wouldn't mind getting to know Lincoln better, I'd rather stick with you, Clyde." said Carmine with a feral grin.
"I'm guessing you want an opportunity to have a rematch with him for yesterday." said Lincoln as he looks at Carmine with suspicion on his face.
"Wow, you're good." said Kieran.
"Quiet, Kiki!" said Carmine, making Kieran recoil.
"Hey, he was just giving a compliment; no need to snap at him." said Lincoln.
"Whatever." said Carmine.
"Kieran, like I said, I know your pain." said Lincoln.
"Since I'll be paired up with Clyde, you can have Kieran as a partner." said Carmine.
"Sure, I'm okay with that." said Lincoln. He then leans over to Clyde. "Be careful around her; she seems like the kind of girl who always wants her way."
"You can tell that?" asked Clyde.
"I grew up with Lori and Lola, so it's pretty easy to tell." said Lincoln.
"If you say so." said Clyde. Just then, Carmine grabs Kieran and pushes him forward.
"Before we get started, how about Lincoln battles my little brother?" suggested Carmine.
"Sure." said Lincoln, getting Kieran to look at him with surprise.
"He would've asked you himself, but he's a bit shy." said Carmine.
"Come on, sis." Kieran moaned.
"Just battle him." said Carmine. Kieran and Lincoln move apart and stand across from each other.
"So, how many Pokemon are we each using?" asked Lincoln.
"H-H-How about two each?" Kieran replied.
"You got it." said Lincoln.
"Don't lose this, Kiki!" said Carmine.
"I doubt he needs any more pressure." said Clyde
"But let me call some people first so they can watch." said Lincoln.
"Yeah, me too." said Clyde.
"Fine." said Carmine. Lincoln and Clyde pull out their Rotom Phone and call their families.
"Good morning, son." said Lynn Sr.
"Hello, Clyde sweetie." said Howard McBride.
"How's Kitakami going?" asked Rita.
"We're about to get started on a group exercise with some students from another academy." said Lincoln. Kieran then walks over to Lincoln and stands next to him as he looks at the screen, getting his family's attention.
"Who's that boy?" asked Lola.
"This is Kieran; he's one of the other academy students I just mentioned." said Lincoln. Kieran walks over to him and looks at all of Lincoln's sisters with amazement.
"Wow, you really do have ten sisters." said Kieran.
"Yeah, it's really unbelievable how one couple can have so many kids, Kieran." said Rita.
"And I'm gonna add Iono to this conversation." said Lincoln as he starts dialing in Iono's Rotom Phone number, making his sisters giggle which makes him blush, and Kieran look at him in shock.
"Iono?! That super popular livestreamer?!" asked Kieran.
"Yeah; not only that, she's also the Levincia gym leader." said Lincoln.
"Wow!" said Kieran.
"No way you'd know someone like her!" said Carmine as she walks over to Lincoln and Kieran with Clyde following after her.
"Not only that, Iono also likes our brother." said Lori with a smirk.
"That is so cool!" said Kieran. A few seconds later, Iono's face appears on one half of Lincoln's Rotom Phone screen.
"'Ello, ello, hola!" said Iono
"Ciao and bonjour, Iono." said Lincoln.
"Linky! How are you doing in Kitakami, cutie?" asked Iono, making Kieran and Carmine look in shock.
"You DO know Iono!" said Kieran.
"Who are those two?" asked Iono.
"Two students from another academy who Clyde and I are doing a group activity with. The boy's name is Kieran, and the other one is his sister, Carmine." said Lincoln. He then goes on to tell his family and Iono what the assignment was.
"That sounds interesting, Lincoln." said Rita.
"Sounds like a fun way to learn about the local area." said Harold McBride.
"Maybe my subscribers would be interested also?" suggested Iono.
"I can show everyone the area on the way to the first signboard." said Lincoln
"That would be nice." said Lori.
"I hope the folklore includes evil spirits." said Lucy, making Iono, Kieran, and Carmine cringe.
"That sister is spooky." said Carmine.
"Thanks." Lucy replied.
"But before I get started, Kieran and I are going to have a battle." said Lincoln.
"Go get him, Lincoln!" said Lynn Jr.
"Ladies and gentlemen, are you ready?" Iono said as she was broadcasting everything to her subscribers. "Caught in my Electroweb your eyes are mine! Whosawhatsit? It's me, Iono! Hello, hola, bonjour! And now... it's time for... the Iono Zone!"
"I'm gonna be in an Iono video?!" asked Kieran.
"How do I look?!" asked Carmine as she tries fixing her hair.
"My cute Linky is about to further explore the Kitakami region and learn about a local legend in the area." said Iono. "But first, he's going to battle a trainer named Kieran."
"And just so your viewers and me and Clyde's families know, we'll each be using two Pokemon." said Lincoln.
"Thanks for letting us know, cutie." said Iono, making Lincoln blush and smile.
Lincoln sets up his Rotom Phone to broadcast the battle before he and Kieran go back to where they stood before Lincoln called his family and Iono, then each pull out a pokeball.
"Go, Sentret." said Kieran, tossing a pokeball and releases a brown, furry Pokemon with long, dark brown ears, a white ring on its chest, and a tail with dark brown stripes. Clyde takes out his Rotom Phone and points it at the Pokemon.
"Sentret, the Scout Pokemon. This Pokémon is extremely cautious. Its supple tail is well muscled and firm to the touch." said Clyde's Rotom Phone. Lily claps and giggles as she looks at Kieran's Sentret.
"I think Lily likes that Pokemon." said Rita.
"Hey, where did you find your Sentret?" Lincoln asked Kieran.
"They can be found around here." said Kieran.
"Maybe I'll try finding one for Lily during the assignment." said Lincoln.
"She would, totes, love that." said Leni.
"Could be just get started, please?!" asked Carmine.
"Sorry." said Lincoln. He tosses his pokeball, releasing his Pawmot.
"And Linky starts out with his Pawmot." said Iono. "I remember when she defeated my Magnezone."
"Pawmot/Sentret, use Quick Attack!" said Lincoln and Kieran in unison. Both their Pokemon move quickly at each other and collide; after a few seconds, Pawmot pushes Sentret back, making it stumble.
"Now use Arm Thrust!" said Lincoln. Pawmot runs at Sentret and lands several strong palm strikes to it, dealing super effective damage, and knocking it out.
"No way." said Kieran with shock.
"And Linky's Pawmot has defeated Kieran's Sentret!" said Iono.
"You better not lose this, Kiki!" said Carmine. Kieran flinches before he returns his Sentret to its pokeball; he then takes out another one and throws it, releasing a Yanma.
"Cool!" said Lana.
"Yanma, use Air Cutter!" said Kieran. His Yanma repeatedly flaps its wings, releasing blades of wind that hit Pawmot.
"Pawmot, use Spark!" said Lincoln. Pawmot charges at the Yanma while her body was coated in electricity and she slams into it, doing super effective damage, and knocks it out.
"Your Pawmot is strong." said Kieran in surprise.
"And Linky's Pawmot has defeated both of Kieran's Pokemon, earning him the victory!" said Iono.
"Way to go, Lincoln!" said Clyde.
"Great work, Lincoln!" said Luna.
"That was, totes, amazing." said Leni. Kieran sulks as he returns his Yanma to its pokeball.
"How could you lose to him, Kieran?!" asked Carmine.
"Hey, back off of him." said Clyde. "You used three Pokemon against just one of mine and you still lost." Carmine growls in response. Kieran looks at Lincoln.
'Maybe I should pair up with Lincoln.' Kieran thinks to himself. 'I might learn a thing or two from him; plus, it would be nice to hang with someone who knows what it's like to deal with an older sister, and he has five of them.'
Lincoln and Clyde are about to start on their joint academy exercise with the Blueberry students. What things will they discover in the Kitakami region as their adventures continue?
