A/N 2: I finally got more than 1,000 words! On the bad side, sorry about the fight scenes. Describing those is not my thing.
Unsurprisingly, she was met with the entirety of AR-1 when she arrived in the gym, and not just Colonel Sheppard as they had agreed. He had changed into black sweatpants and a black T-shirt. Dr. Rodney McKay, whom she had very briefly met the day before, was still in his grey uniform. Ronon Dex, one of the Pegasus natives, was wearing brown pants with a matching brown sleeveless top. The second Pegasus native was wearing what looked like a fancy leather sports bra-like thing, and a skirt.
Apparently, she might get to spar with more than just one of them. She smiled as she entered the room. "Hi, everyone!" Her own sweatpants were black with a pink stripe going down each leg, and she was wearing a matching sleeveless T-shirt. The resident scientist snorted at the sight of her but remained quiet when the other three gave him a warning look.
Colonel Sheppard gave a quick introduction, and given the reaction they had clearly been aware of her arrival for long enough to get used to the idea of a fifth member on their team.
"So," Sheppard said lightly as he stepped forward. "I thought we could make this interesting. If you're agreeable?" Hazel eyes gave her a questioning look, but she got the feeling it wasn't a question, more of a test.
"Sure. What did you have in mind?"
"Fighting Wraith isn't just about skill and weaponry, but also endurance, and knowing when to run away before they drain you of your lifeforce." She inclined her head and gave a shallow nod while she waited for him to continue. "They are a lot stronger than humans, faster, too. They can play tricks on your mind so you don't know they're there, so make sure you always pay attention to your surroundings when you're off-world. Even if it's supposedly safe."
All of that had been in her briefings and the reports she had been reading on the way across galaxies. "Wraith are stronger than humans, faster than humans, and can fake invisibility. Check, check, and check."
Buffy gave him good eye contact, "So, what's your plan to make this interesting?"
"30 minutes of non-stop sparring for you. Each of us," and he pointed at the alien half of the team, "Will get ten minutes each. Rodney will keep track of the time. Any questions?"
Huh. It seemed like the Military Commander had been reading her file a little more thoroughly than she had expected. She grinned, showing off her pearly whites. This could prove itself to be a lot more fun than she had expected when she challenged Sheppard in his office earlier.
"Only one; hand-to-hand or some kind of weapon?"
"Hand-To-Hand. We'll see about adding sticks afterward, depending on how this goes."
"Okay," she replied easily. It was how she normally fought, not counting the stake to finish off vampires. "Who's first?" She was hoping for the tall, brooding alien who her lust bunnies had decided was a definite honey. No such luck though.
"I'll go first, then Teyla, and finally Ronon." He looked over to the scientist by the wall. "Ready?"
The man muttered something uncomplimentary about the military under his breath but held up the stopwatch. "As I'll ever be. Can we get this over with? I have important things to do, and it doesn't include watching my team beat up Barbie."
She mostly ignored the jab, pink was pretty! Feeling good, she said, "It's Buffy, Dr. McKay, not Barbie." Then she gave him an exaggerated wink and blew him a kiss. He instantly glared and probably would've given an impressive rant if his team leader hadn't cleared his throat.
"Ready?" He glanced at both of them who nodded their acceptance as they had already moved into position. "And, GO!"
Sheppard began with some easy moves to test her, and she side-stepped the first few times before she kicked him behind the knee the third time. He did some flailing but managed to stay on his feet, she smirked. That was promising. After nearly five minutes of hits and blocking, she decided to grab his arm and pin it behind his back before forcing him down on his knees. Sheppard immediately attempted to get loose but quickly realized that wasn't happening.
Annoyed, he said, "I yield." She let go and took several steps back, something that proved to be a wise move as Teyla had moved forward without hesitation and tried for an uppercut.
Right after Sheppard's surrender, McKay announced "Eight minutes." That meant Teyla might get 12 minutes instead of 12.
The Athosian was a much better fighter and Buffy enjoyed her technique. Unlike Sheppard, she didn't hold back nearly as much, and Buffy returned the favor by putting more strength into her hits. Multiple leg sweeps failed on both sides, as did kicking Teyla behind the knee as she was aware of this move now and didn't fall for it.
Buffy grabbed Teyla's wrist and tried to move behind her so her arm would stretch out, and she'd be able to force her down, but before Buffy could get her other hand up to secure the move Teyla moved quickly and used her other hand to try and hit Buffy's mid-section. Instinctively Buffy retreated and let go of the arm.
To the side, she heard McKay announce, "Nine minutes and 30 seconds."
Going for blunt, Buffy stepped close to the other woman and grabbed her arm again while at the same time kicking her a little harder than necessary behind the knee. Like Buffy had done with her first opponent, she forced Teyla to the floor.
"I yield."
Ronon came up behind her as soon as she let go of Teyla and attempted to strike her in the head. Buffy ducked and came back up hitting him in the stomach on the way up. She regulated her strength so it would only knock the wind out of him, mainly so she could get more distance between them.
The Satedan had the unfair advantage of being at least two heads taller than her, and that also meant his reach was superior to hers. Not that anyone being taller than her was news, most people were. Still, it meant she needed to get creative since close combat was much more difficult.
Unexpectedly he grabbed her and threw her against the nearest wall. Instinctively she flipped in the air and took a few steps on the wall before gravity pulled her down. She gave him a light glare, but only got a baring of teeth in response, which she supposed was a grin.
Two minutes later Ronon crashed into the opposite wall. Moving quickly while he was still a little dazed, she bent one of his arms back, and got a slightly annoyed, "I yield."
Buffy turned and gave Colonel Sheppard a bright smile. "Does this mean I win?"
"Twenty-nine minutes," McKay said.
"It does." They both ignored the scientist.
When Buffy turned, she saw Teyla checking on her teammate. He was already getting back on his feet though, none the worse for wear. He gave her a respectful nod, and she returned it.
With any luck, they could repeat this, but with the sticks Sheppard had mentioned.
