As restless as his sleep – or lack thereof – was, Izuku Midoriya's mind runs a mile a minute now that he's wide awake. It should be because he's currently in class, but it's not for any academic reason, but rather due to his fixation on the villain that got away from him. It's happened before but this one is much closer to his personal life & thus it's been nagging at his brain more than any overdue assignment can ever pull off. There's the typical feeling of guilt and shame that comes with his failure as he blames himself for not doing better. But there's also an added embarrassment that consumes him because of how foolish he was to fall for the villain's distractions. Sure, the pro heroes had too, but the trick was directed at them and not him. He can't help but think that he should have been the exception to the problem that he could have been.
Because of all those lingering thoughts on the matter, Izuku has been trying to make up for it ever since. First thing in the morning, bright and early, he suited up as Spider-Man. Rather than taking the train or a bus, he swung his way to school. The angst ridden teenager had been hoping for a miracle to transpire; he imagined a scenario in which he'd pick up a lead along the way. But alas, still absolutely nothing. The Spider Tracer's signal is yet to alert him to the location of the villain that managed to infiltrate U.A. That's been wracking his nerves too. Perhaps the support items need an upgrade but his Spider-Sense is constantly straining to cover the stretch of .. well.. nearly everywhere so long as there's no direct place to pinpoint the source of it being triggered.
Izuku tunes out the lecture being given by Present Mic, still wrapped up in his own head to pay attention. It's something silly being said anyways. Mic's teaching style is intended to be fun but the man brought in a guitar today to try and sing them English. While the pro hero is also a radio talk show host, he's surprisingly not all that musically inclined. Mic's cockatoo haircut matches the decibel of his voice. Several students wince at the sharp sound of it and have to cover or plug their ears. If not for the saving grace of the guitar being strummed, Izuku would be in a similar situation due to his enhanced sense of hearing. He just puts his listening on autopilot to hone in on the strings that are being plucked specifically. It's a nice way to settle the surrounding traveling air waves by focusing on just the one.
Izuku sits up straight in his seat, snapping to attention. He blinks as though he caught a glimpse of what he just thought of and has to make sure that it's feasibly possible. By thinking a little more positively than negatively, he soon begins to believe that it is possible. Thanks to Mic's terrible singing – actually more so thanks to Mic's musical instrument – Izuku came up with a solution to his Spider-Sense problem. Spiders have a similar method to plucking guitar strings, except by using their webs, to essentially conduct a melody of echo location. It's not quite a radar sense but something along the lines of a specialized Spider-Sense, or as Izuku would imagine the way that it'd work.
Izuku's chair legs scrape the ground as the seat is abruptly slid back. He stands up so suddenly that it's a disruption to Mic's lesson. The teacher and the students all turn to look at him. Izuku has little to no time to think of a valid reason to excuse himself so he goes with the first thing that comes to mind, "I.. Shit myself.."
The room is dead silent. If Izuku were to go through with wanting to facepalm, they would all be able to hear the slap. They instead hear Present Mic's long winded sigh. "Again, Mister Midoriya?" The teacher removes his sunglasses to give his student a sympathetic look. "This is the third time this week…"
Izuku's demeanor slumps a bit, his shoulders slouching as he loses the bravado he had over finding a solution to his Spider-Sense. He'd been so absorbed in it that he accidentally reused the same excuse that he's been using. And he's ashamed that it's probably the worst type of reason that he could give. He tries laughing it off, but the laugh is VERY forced and strained. An equally necessitated shrug does no better to help him quell his embarrassment.
Shinso wears a smug smile while whispering, "The diarrhea cover isn't so bad anymore now, huh?" Izuku shoots his friend a hard stare, the glare only making the fellow Gen Ed student more entertained by this whole thing currently transpiring.
All of the two boy's peers in the surrounding seats laugh when Present Mic hands Izuku a hall pass to be properly excused from class. "You might want to pay Recovery Girl a visit after you're done in the restroom", the kind hearted man means well but he only adds salt to the wound with that comment; Izuku blushes, used to being humiliated in school but not in such a way as this.
"Yeah… That might take a while but I think I will..", Izuku uses the suggestion as an opportunity to bide more time as Spider-Man though so it's really worth the shameful sacrifice if it's able to be a saving grace. He even plays into it, placing a hand over his stomach to feign it hurting; ironically, his hand placement is exactly where the scar from Hawks, thanks to his actual visit to Recovery Girl's infirmary, has healed.
"Run along then, Little Listener" Present Mic gives his student the go-ahead. Izuku wastes no more time and seizes that chance instantly, hurriedly running out of the room. "Poor fella..", Mic mutters under his breath a sincere sympathetic statement.
Of course, watching the boy who just admitted to crapping their pants sprint out of the room causes another commotion of giggles and laughs. Hitoshi Shinso just shakes his head, unable to join in for the sake of his friend but still finding the whole thing extra amusing to himself considering he knows that it's all an act. Shinso somehow both admires and admonishes Izuku's commitment to it all.
Spider-Man suspends himself over a busy street in what's essentially a web knitted hammock. Branching out in a variety of directions to connect to a series of structures are all of the strings that make up its design. It's the most massive a web that he's ever woven. It's meant to catch all of the soundwaves that pass through. And it does, the wires shaking with every car horn honking and each shrill tire screech.
Spider-Man weaves together extra binding cords, pulling them one over the other. It all stems to the center of the network where he now resides. And it's from there that he's able to feel the vibrations that flow through every string. Sound transmits across his catcher. The net contains it all before releasing into the air. And it maps out the city surrounding him entirely. He can sense it all so perfectly that it almost creates an image in his head. The train tracks treading tingle his Spider-Sense. Footsteps from below bounce along the wires. Spider-Man can capture it all.
But it can also be a sensation overload if he's not careful. It potentially poses the same problem that led him to giving this whole web thing a try. He needs to hone in on specific sound sources. He needs the noise to travel and span out his Spider-Sense in every direction but one at a time. Spider-Man taps a string to send a signal through it. He charts out the south first. Then he pivots to echo locate what's north of him. Spider-Man needs to close his eyes in order to fully rely on what it is that's being registered. Separating his Spider-Sense from what he sees becomes integral to this process.
Spider-Man spins, tapping every set of strings that surround him. Ripples of erosion travel throughout the wired network. A pulsating picture is painted via his Spider-Sense. It moves throughout the city. Searching. Shrinking. Diminishing. This is a repetitive process that must be repeated. Until, finally, Spider-Man has a realization. To the west is where the Spider-Sense stretches its signal further than the other attempts to map around him. That must be in the direction of where his Spider Tracer is. He crawls closer to where those web wires are aimed. His fingers feel the focused signal being transmitted through those strings.
"Bingo", Spider-Man opens his eyes to see where he's meant to head, "Gotcha now!" The signal seems to be coming from Kamino. So that's the place that Spider-Man starts to swing for.
As the vigilante enters that zone, he gets a sharper sense of where to find the cause of his inbuilt danger location. It's drawing him towards an alley. Of course. Warehouses and alleyways are always where crime happens the most. Spider-Man cautiously crawls into the pocket space. As he does, he starts to recognize the look of it. It's as damp as ever with just about as much litter strewn around. But it's the metal door and the bar sign ahead of him that confirms it.
He's been here before. As Izuku Midoriya. "Didn't I deliver a pizza here once?", the specialized set of eyes on Spider-Man's mask slant into narrow slithers as he squints, "Great.. Now I can't have pizza anymore… Villains ruin everything."
But he's able to put two and two together now. When he delivered pizza to this address, the bartender here was enveloped in a similar looking cloud to the one he saw back in U.A's teacher lounge. Plus the 'scraggly' guy that Yo Shindo mentioned potentially matches the description of who Izuku remembers was called Tomura. It seems about right. As Spider-Man, it's valuable intel worth looking into.
Spider-Man crawls along the brick wall that he's on, keeping himself at a height higher than the door just in case somebody comes out of it. He's not sure if there are any other entrances or exits to this place for him to stealthily sneak in through but he doesn't imagine himself having any difficulty with the two bozos that he remembers so he only exercises stealth a tiny bit. It's not until he's directly above the bar entryway that he starts to consider the level of magnitude his Spider-Sense is picking up; it's really strong, strong enough to give him a headache.
And then, suddenly, the intense sensation disappears. All that tension disperses. Spider-Man's eyes expand, stunned by the abruptness of it. He had been so sure that this is the place. Before he gives up and goes though, he ponders why it happened first. And he realizes that this is exactly what happened when he threw his Spider Tracer into the warpgate back at U.A. The signal must have been transported elsewhere. The villain that he tagged left the bar via portal, probably.
While Spidey may now no longer be able to bust into the villain's evil lair to bust them, he now has a different opportunity presented to him. If the bad guys are away, that means the spider can come in to pay a visit and play. There's now no need to worry about being caught by entering through the front door. He can waltz right on in and invite himself to do some snooping around. Spider-Man opens the metallic entrance so that he can explore the baddie's base.
It's just about the same as he remembers on the inside as it is on the outside. Spider-Man climbs down from the ceiling to avoid getting caught by the fan that's set to spin. His feet touch down on blackened ebony floorboards. Ahead of him are the bar and the bottles behind it. The rest of the place is occupied by empty booths for the lack of patrons.
Spider-Man spares some glances around. There's not much that gives it away as a private hangout for villains. Unless drinking is inherently evil. Spidey makes a mental note to web up a few drunk drivers every now and then just in case. But on a more serious note, the vigilante starts to suspect that such a place would have some secret stuff stowed away. He picks a few bottles off the shelves like he's seen done in spy thrillers with books. When no secret passage opens for him, he has to reconsider his tactic of searching for something.
There IS an oddly placed miniature television. It has only audio, no visual. Static buzzes from its speakers. It gives him the creeps. It's like something straight out of a horror movie. His hairs stand on end, his Spider-Sense on the verge of going off. He elects to ignore whatever the heck that's about and move on. He's in the business of battling bad guys, not ghosts or anything paranormal of that nature.
Spider-Man checks under the bar counter. He expects a shotgun to be stowed away like in old westerns (a quirkless boy with no friends has a lot of time to spend watching movies alone, alright) but what he finds instead looks like a menu. A menu. Singular. Not plural. That's strangely suspicious. Spider-Man picks it up to give it a read through. And he discovers that what he's skimming over is not a menu but actually U.A's Hero Course schedule for the week.
Spider-Man drops it. He lets it fall to the floor, not caring to waste any time catching it or putting it back. Right now, he instead needs to focus on getting back to U.A. He vaults over the bar counter in a single bound. A web line shot ahead of him and then a tug on it allows him to zip forward and reach the exit quicker. He needs to hurry. He busts out all of the moves to get up and out of the alley so that he can swing from suspended structures.
What he saw on the stolen schedule was a red sharpie drawn circle around the time slot for a field trip today. There's no time for him to waste in getting to what U.A calls the Unforeseen Simulation Joint – because what they're about to encounter is absolutely unforeseen to them, and it's certainly not a simulation – Spider-Man swings with haste to the USJ.
It's too late that it now makes sense to Eraserhead why what was stolen went unnoticed. Nezu had told him 'nothing of significance' went missing. A U.A class schedule is something capable of slipping beneath the radar of what can be deemed worth looking into. At least, long enough to act upon that information if done so immediately.
What's no doubt the same villain that infiltrated U.A the first time has returned. With allies. Lots of allies. A massive warpgate covers the courtyard space that serves as the epicenter of the USJ. Waves upon waves of the enemy force funnel out from the rogue entrance to the facility. Most of them look like D listers that are always getting put on probation but even low level threats such as they can amount to something dangerous when there are this many.
Plus it's important not to underestimate them. Especially not their tactician. This was well thought out and orchestrated. The power to the USJ has been cut, whatever EMP they used whether it be a villain's quirk or a device also killing communication to contact reinforcements. The door behind them has been sealed shut so that they can't turn around and flee either. It was always their plan to have a faceoff with Class 1-A of the Hero Course and now they've got one.
Eraserhead protectively positions himself in front of his students. The warpgate is starting to close but the last of the villains still exiting it are now exuding a different level of deadly aura than the others. These must be the leading members of the group that they put together. One looks to be the warpgate creator, shrouded in a similar smokey substance to the transportation portals that they produce. The other is covered in severed hands, sickly in appearance as they are sickening themself. And lastly, what can only be described as a monster lumbers behind them; no doubt meant to be their top enforcer of muscle.
The one covered in hands is itching to wreak havoc, literally scratching at the dried skin around his neck. "Looks to me that there's a bunch of hero brats to kill but no All Might.." His voice, though raspy, still carries loud enough to be heard. "Have we got the schedule wrong? If we're too early, I'm gonna be pissed. I hate having to wait for things that I want."
"Calm yourself, Tomura Shigaraki, there is likely a good reason for All Might's absence" The wispy warpgate conjurer uses a much more refined form of speech but the power dynamic is evident; this villain serves the other named Tomura Shigaraki.
Eraserhead clenches his hand into a fist, simultaneously using that fist to grip the capture cloth wrapped around his neck. He's prepared to spring into action should any of the villains make a move. But if this armada of villains are out to kill All Might who currently claims the title of Number One Hero, then he's not entirely sure that he'll be enough to guarantee his students' safety. The problem is.. All Might being absent ISN'T for a good reason. As far as the underground hero that doubles as a teacher is concerned, All Might was supposed to be here but flaked last minute.
"Greetings! We are The League Of Villains!", Tomura Shigaraki's lapdog doubles as his interpreter and does the liberty of giving introductions, "We are here to kill the symbol of peace. Would any of you happen to know of All Might's whereabouts? We were informed that he would be present here today."
Behind him, Eraserhead hears mixed audible reactions from his students. Exhales, inhales, gasps, and everything else in between. It's to be expected since they're still young and inexperienced in the field when it comes to facing villains.
Tomura Shigaraki scratches at the exposed section of his neckline, digging deeper at his skin. "If you screwed up the schedule times, Kurogiri, I swear.." The villain's voice hisses with hatred. Eraserhead has had evil direct such levels of hatred at him before. He just doesn't want that coming anywhere near his students. The League's leader is unhinged, now tearing skin with his fingernails and bleeding from the base of his neck.
"This dude's hella tweaking", what Aizawa recognizes as the voice of his student named Setsuna Tokage whispers behind him amongst other collective commotion. She was originally intended to be apart of Class 1-B. But after an unfortunate incident during the Entrance Exam, applicants were moved around.
Another member of Class 1-A chimes in. Albeit, this one braver & bolder. "This type of riff raff could never kill All Might", Aizawa recognizes this student as Shoto Todoroki, "They're too weak to pull it off" The son of Endeavor shares a similar sentiment to the situation that his father probably would. There's just one issue with that. It's wrong.
"They likely have an ace up their sleeve to account for that", Aizawa eyes the monster at the back of the league which came out last from the warpgate, "Nobody underestimate them whatsoever – these are real villains – do your best to stay behind me and do NOT engage."
Thirteen, a fellow pro hero in the U.A staff, joins Eraserhead in opposing the legion of villains. She has a speaker built into the helmet of her astronaut themed suit that helps her project her voice, "All Might won't be coming. There was a change in plans."
Shigaraki seethes through his teeth as he somehow scratches at his skin even harder, "That won't do.. We went through all this trouble of preparing this and that bastard's a no show!"
The one called Kurogiri remains composed despite his leader's disappointment. "It seems we'll have to unfortunately postpone our objective and reevaluate", the smokey being opens a warpgate behind them much like the one that they arrived through, "Shall we return to base?"
"They're leaving?", a lot of the students witnessing this murmur mixed reactions over it. Above all else, they are hopeful. "Just like that?", the already pink hued girl named Mina Ashido blushes a shade pinker at the thought of relief from having to engage with villains so soon in her prospective hero career.
But the red eyes of Shigaraki crave to see more red in them. "It'd be such a waste of what we put together", the villain sets his sight on the hero school's students. "No, Kurogiri.. We promised our friends here bloodshed and I think it'd be a shame to disappoint" He motions for the portal to close and for his league of subordinates to stay. "Besides, maybe some dead children will be enough to make All Might come running!"
Eraserhead doesn't falter for a moment. "Thirteen! Protect the kids!", he leaps forward to meet the armada of villains half way rather than allowing them a chance to get anywhere nearer than that to his students. He pulls his capture cloth loose from around his neck and conceals his gaze with his signature yellow goggles.
The underground hero uses his quirk to erase his enemies' quirks. A female villain with gun muzzles at the base of her fingertips tries shooting at him but can't, the organic barrels click as though empty or jammed. A male villain with a visor over his eyes to control his laser sight is unable to fire a beam from the support gear. Eraserhead takes them both down before they get a chance to figure out why it is that their quirks have forsaken them.
"Whoa!", Eijiro Kirishima is a boy who revels in action much like the boy beside him named Katsuki Bakugo. He grins with shark toothed teeth on full display while watching his teacher kick ass. "Who knew Aizawa-Sensei was so manly?!", he admires the way Eraserhead takes down a set of villains so effortlessly.
Shigaraki also watches as the underground hero engages in combat. "Damn you for being so cool, Eraserhead…" He admits to being impressed with the way that the man dispatches so many villains despite being completely outnumbered. "My canon fodder doesn't stand a chance", but he also notes that the losing side here is his side – and that is not acceptable – so he has to unfortunately intervene rather than enjoy the show.
Kurogiri catches the hint and begins activating his quirk, "Shall we carry on with our original plan then?", he asks for confirmation despite already knowing that he's got it.
"Just hurry up already before he blows through all these losers and leaves no NPCs left for the brats to deal with", Shigaraki dismisses the thought of doing anything other than executing their plan. And that plan is dispersing the Hero Course students across the USJ and splitting them up with sets of villains.
Eraserhead throws his head back in their direction out of concern for them, "Thirteen!", but all he can do is try and warn them of the incoming enemy warp villain.
Shigaraki seizes that split second as a chance to strike. Like a snake, he thrusts himself at Eraserhead's blind spot. The villain grabs ahold of the underground hero's elbow. It crusts and crumbles at the touch. Flesh flakes off and raw muscle gets exposed. "You should worry about yourself, Eraserhead!" Shigaraki's scarred lips lift and stretch into a smirk.
Eraserhead bats the villain aside, ripping his arm away from Shigaraki's deadly hold on him. The decay stops but the damage has already been done. He's injured and surrounded. The odds aren't in his favor. At the very least, he now knows for an absolute fact that it was Tomura Shigaraki who broke the U.A barrier to use reporters as a distraction; this is the guy that he needs to focus on trying to take down the most.
Kurogiri warps himself past Thirteen to grant himself access to Class 1-A. However, he underestimated the will to fight that some of those students have in them. He gets too close and nearly gets pummeled by Kirishima. Bakugo backs up the other loose canon as a reckless youth himself, blasting at Kurogiri's dark mass with a volley of explosions.
"That was close..", the villain was able to conceal his body with the smoggy cover that his quirk provides but still sweats over the slip up that nearly costed him.
"Bakugo! Kirishima! We told you that you aren't to engage!", Thirteen rushes to rescue the students that put themselves directly in the line of fire to Kurogiri's quirk. But she isn't fast enough. They're the first to be consumed by the warp villain's expanding dark mass.
"Be gone and writhe in torment!", Kurogiri swallows a majority of the class with his body made into a giant portal itself. Most of the hero hopefuls brace themselves. Others try fleeing from the incoming void. Only a select few manage to escape thanks to Thirteen.
Thirteen uncaps a lid on the index finger of her glove, granting her quirk the ability to function. A natural opposition to Kurogiri's quirk, she casts a blackhole that sucks him in. The smog dissipates and pulls away from some of the students that are still present.
But Kurogiri doesn't allow himself to be completely absorbed by the blackhole. Just enough to get near enough to open a secondary warpgate behind Thirteen in order to redirect it. What part of him is getting pulled by the force now pulls from the other side. Her own quirk used against her, the blackhole tears open the back of Thirteen's astronaut suit.
"No! Thirteen!", Itsuka Kendo cries out in horror & despair as she watches one of her teachers get torn apart. Desperate to try and stop the villain before it's too late, she inflates her fists with her birth quirk and then applies power to them with her gifted quirk.
An influx of air surges forth when Itsuka smashes Kurogiri using her giant sized fist. All Might's transferred power plows into the warp villain and sends him flying. Kurogiri crashes into the ceiling, consumed by smoke from falling debris until the smoke that makes up his body is overtaken.
She doesn't bother checking on the condition of the villain after that. She's much too worried about the survival status of Thirteen. "Jirou! Help me with first aid!", she shouts for assistance from one of the other Hero Course students who didn't get warped away.
"R- Right!", Jirou snaps out of her state of shock over the suddenness of all that just transpired and races over to lend any help that she can. Thirteen isn't moving or responding to any of the treatment that she or Itsuka provide. "Damn, this doesn't look good.."
"Iida!", Itsuka sees that the fellow class rep of 1-A also managed to outrun the warpgate; it's to be expected of someone from the Ingenium bloodline who has engines protruding from their calves. Because of his speed type quirk, she has a different order in mind to give him than helping with Thirteen. "Try and get out of here so you can bring back reinforcements", she gestures towards the door with her head now that there's no villains to prevent him from escaping through it.
Tenya Iida falters, unable to run out so easily. He begins to protest against her judgment call, "You can't possibly expect me to abandon you when–"
"You aren't abandoning us! You're the only one that can SAVE us!", but Itsuka is quick to correct him on his thinking. Seeing that he still doesn't fully agree with her, she explains the rationality of her decision further. "You're the fastest of us to be able to reach help sooner! Now go!"
Iida mulls that over in his mind for a moment. Albeit hesitantly, "Yes.. You're right..", he agrees with that assessment of the situation. He's still reluctant to leave them behind, but he forces himself to go along with the role that he's been given for the greater good. "I'll be back!", he assures them that he'll return after carrying out his task though for fear of them thinking otherwise.
Shigaraki sees the whole thing. He watches from the courtyard as Iida slips out the USJ doors. "Looks like this level has a time limit on how long it needs to take in order to be cleared…", he views this whole thing as a game the way that Nezu might but in a more childish way that imposes more trouble than is worth.
Caught in the throes of this game, is Eraserhead. He fends off foes with one arm, the other limb not responding properly due to the damage inflicted on it. He threads his capture cloth through his mouth, clamping down on it with his teeth by biting; it tugs and pulls a villain into a punch. He also throws in a few kicks. Swiping out the legs of one opponent opens an opportunity to spring back up and knee another in the face.
It's all very entertaining but Shigaraki must take his eyes off of the match for a moment to check in on his transportation. Kurogiri was hit pretty hard that there may be a cause for concern there. "Bitchy brat..", he vows to kill the girl responsible for causing him trouble. Not for the sake of a comrade being harmed but for the sake of being inconvenienced.
Just as Shigaraki had done when presented with a similar opportunity, Eraserhead takes this as a chance to dash at the villain. He intends on using Shigaraki's distracted attention as a means to get in a good hit. But the blow never lands on Shigaraki. Eraserhead hits a solid mass of muscle instead.
"Nomu", Shigaraki shifts his gaze from where Kurogiri was knocked back to Eraserhead when he sees that his pet monster came to his rescue. Nomu put itself between the underground hero and its master, its mind programmed with the rest of its bio-engineering to protect Shigaraki at all costs. But when given a different order, that command can be overridden. Shigaraki starts to give it a command, "Kil–"
All heads turn towards the ceiling when glass starts to shower. The domed skylight of the USJ shatters and sends shards raining down. Falling with the broken glass is a figure illuminated by the sun behind it. It's a person poised in a particular position that they also land in. It's someone who sticks out like a sore thumb.
Kyoka Jirou hears her own heart flutter. She can't help but smile from the relief that she's filled with; hope saves her spirit as though it had been All Might that came crashing in. But it wasn't All Might. It's somebody with a similarly colored suit, but it's not All Might. "That's.. !", she has the person's name on the tip of her tongue just short of being shouted or even sung.
"Isn't that… ?", Itsuka Kendo can hardly believe her eyes when she sees who came to save her, her teachers, and the rest of her class. She had heard all of the stories but being a witness to something so outlandish herself is an entirely different experience. Not even the pictures that were taken by Izuku do the presence of this person proper justice.
"You're – You're – !", Shigaraki stumbles back from what he would describe as the level's 'hidden boss'.
The party crasher – or rather, skylight crasher – raises his head. "Yeah", he narrows his white lensed eyes that achieve a dramatic effect when backlit by the sun's glare, "I'm Batman."
Swaying slightly side to side throws off Mashirao Ojiro's balance. He's never been on a boat before. He has to use his tail as a crutch to keep himself upright. But when he gets used to the rocking motion enough to try moving, he bravely heads for the side of the cruise ship to peer over it. For some reason, the warping villain transported him somewhere that there aren't even any villains. Sure, there's a mass of water between him and the courtyard that he got sent away from, but it's a swimmable distance. He continues to ponder why the villains would exclude him from everybody else in such a way. But before he can do too much thinking about it, he hears the creak of a loose floorboard coming from behind.
"Hold it– !", he whirls around and strikes a judo stance. He's skilled enough in martial arts to defend himself should he have to. But the blonde boy lowers his guard when seeing a fellow blonde boy from his class. "Kaminari?", he recognizes the other Hero Course student and breathes a sigh of relief, "Looks like I'm not alone afterall."
Denki Kaminari combs a hand through the lightning streak in his hair, seemingly expressing a sign of equal relief. "Nah, bro! It's just me!", he laughs off Ojiro's paranoia to further soothe things, "I thought you were about to go all kung fu on me! Sorry for sneaking up on ya."
Ojiro laughs a little too, "You can never be too careful", he returns his attention to the distance that they'll need to swim in order to return to the courtyard while waving Kaminari over to also take a look.
Kaminari comes up behind Ojiro, joining him at the railing. But it's not to partner up with the hero hopeful. It's to betray the boy and snuff out that spark of hope with a spark of evil. Kaminari zaps Ojiro in the back of the head. Ojiro slumps over, instantly blacking out and falling unconscious. Kaminari catches the limp body, carrying it only for the reason that the boss ordered they retrieve it undamaged.
"Yeah.. You really can never be too careful", the U.A traitor otherwise known as Electro wears a sinister smile on his face. He moves Ojiro's body to a beach chair while waiting for the pickup to come. Kurogiri is usually quite timely with these things that it's strange for the fellow villain to show up late. Kaminari checks the time on his phone, using his quirk to bypass their EMP and get a signal.
Sure enough, Kurogiri arrives via the usual warpgate means a moment later. "I apologize for the delay", the villain limps from a recently sustained injury but otherwise remains functionable in the field, "There was an unexpected disturbance."
"I told you that some of my classmates can pack a punch", Kaminari gives his criminal comrade a once over before shrugging it off and leaving the villain to lick their own wounds, "But so long as everything continues going according to plan.."
"There was more than one disruption", Kurogiri stops Kaminari in his tracks at the mention of another problem. "We may need to adjust the plan accordingly", Kurogiri beckons for Electro to have a look.
This time, Kaminari does spare a glance over the ship's side to see what's across the stretch of water. There, at the end of the bay that they currently reside in, is the courtyard where their boss still lingers. And the boss is joined by someone who wasn't there previously.
Kurogiri tends to teleporting Mashirao Ojiro's body to their base. In the meantime, Kaminari studies the space between the simulation shipwreck zone that they're in and the courtyard of the USJ. He hums and contemplates what should be their course of action.
Kaminari is about to dismiss the matter. He doesn't deem it worth risking the exposure of himself as a double agent by getting involved. But when he gets a closer look at who it really is across the bay that's come to disrupt their scheme, something surges up within him. "Wait.. I know that guy..", he remembers fighting what he considers to be a pest already and snarls. Electro craves a rematch with, "That guy…"
Mina Ashido wakes up in the landslide zone, her pink pigmentation dusted with dirt patches. She was dumped here by the warping villain's portal quirk. It was a bit of a fall and she took quite a nasty spill but she survived without any broken bones at least. Ashido forces herself to get up because of that, ignoring any other aching protests that might have otherwise kept her down. She knows that with villains running amok that she can't allow herself to become a damsel in distress by just laying around.
So, why does she feel that she's exactly that when finding herself face to face with the villains that had also been transported to the landslide zone? She raises her hands in front of her, each of them shaking no matter how much she tries to hide that she's afraid of them. She secretes a spray of acid to try and intimidate them but the tiny splatter and sizzle doesn't do anything to scare them off. "S- Stay b- back", her trembling voice fairs no better at getting that job done either.
The group of villains cackle, finding sadistic pleasure in seeing a young girl afraid of them. It makes Ashido tear up as much as it makes her angry at them. She sprays another round of acid. This time, it's a greater amount and much more cohesive. They jump back from it. It makes them stop laughing at her, at least.
One of the villains is about to charge at her. Ashido raises her arms, shielding herself as best as she can. But before the attacker can come, they get attacked first. A girl with a spiked ponytail jumps into the fray with a staff that wallops each and every one of the scumbag villains.
"Yaomomo!", Ashido calls out to her rescuer using the nickname that she gave her friend on their first day of class together; Momo Yaoyorozu is just as relieved as the pinkette to have found an ally on the battlefield. "I'm so happy to see you!", the two embrace one another.
They only break the hug when they're joined by two other classmates. "Ribbit", one is a girl with a frog quirk. And the other is a girl with a reptilian quirk. They're both greenettes but it's the frog girl who has her hair tied a certain way. Tsuyu Asui accepts a residual hug from Ashido. Setsuna Tokage stands idly by, waiting with a hand on her hip.
"Do you have any idea why we got grouped together?", Tokage gives each of the girls a quick look of acknowledgement afterwards.
Yaoyorozu clears her throat, "I don't believe it was particularly planned", she starts sharing her assessment of the situation first, "Otherwise Tsuyu would have been sent somewhere like the conflagration zone."
"Which means they don't know what our quirks are", Tokage follows along with that line of logic and can't help but flash a pointed toothed grin, "Nice!"
Sensing that Tokage's enthusiasm over their tactical advantage implies they use it makes Ashido interject. "Gals, Aizawa-Sensei told us not to engage" She reminds them of their teacher's order.
But the look that Tokage throws Ashido conveys that she could care less, "It's a little too late for that. Don'tcha think?"
Yaoyorozu places a hand on Tokage's shoulder, trying to steer the other girl in the right direction. "No, Ashido's right, what we did just now was self defense but seeking out any other opponents would be unnecessarily putting ourselves at risk" She sides with the pinkette when it comes to planning what they do next.
"Boooo", Tokage gives Yaoyorozu a thumbs down that simultaneously brushes the girl's hand off. "What happened to girl power?", she flips her hair back in an effort to make herself look more convincing of her point. "Are you with me, Tsu?"
Tsuyu Asui places a finger against her chin. She looks thoughtful, but in truth, she has already made up her mind on the matter. "Actually, I agree with Yaoyorou and Ashido."
"Whaaaat?!", Tokage continues to complain about the majority vote of her involuntary teammates. But she knows that she must relent. So she surrenders. Not without pouting and crossing her arms to let them know that she's upset about it though, "Why did I have to get stuck with the lame-o's?"
That makes Yaoyorozu falter in her decision. She reconsiders and comes to a logical compromise, "But.. We should still be able to observe from afar in order to keep a general knowledge of the situation's status."
"Now we're talking!", Tokage perks back up when hearing that she can have her way.
"Wait!", but Ashido still isn't so gung ho about it. "Y- You don't think it'd be better for us to stay put?", she asks them to put more thought into it.
Ever the sympathizer as much as she is a people pleaser, Yaoyorozu also accommodates Ashido. "You can stay if you feel safer staying", she offers her classmate a soft smile, "But I think it's in our best interest to check the courtyard again in order to ensure everyone else's safety."
Ashido looks down, trying to pick herself back up from the pits of despair. Eventually, she finds it in herself to stand strong. But not without asking first, "F- From afar… right?"
"From afar", Yaoyorozu promises not to push them too into enemy territory. And with that promise, the ponytailed hero hopeful convinces Ashido to come with them.
"Come on! Come on!", Tokage takes that as a sign that she can run ahead of them. She serves as the group's scout. And fortunately, she nor the others encounter any other villains in the landslide zone.
But when they climb over the hill that overlooks the USJ's courtyard, things take a turn. Tokage stops in her tracks. The others slow behind her, scared to see what's beyond the horizon. After seeing firsthand what the villain group's leader is capable of, they're worried of what they'll find.
Each of them peer over at the same time. And each of their eyes nearly pop out of their skulls. Thanks to Tokage's quirk, she actually can give that type of overly exaggerated reaction. It's rather fitting, considering what it is that they've set their sights on.
"Is that… ?", Asui places a finger against her chin per the curious gesture that she usually makes when her attention is drawn to something.
Ashido shakes her head in disbelief. She somehow speaks despite her mouth hanging open, "No way that's…"
Tokage jumps with joy as she exclaims the name of the vigilante that's come to rescue them, "That's Spider-Man!"
Spider-Man strikes a pose. Not on purpose, he'll swear by not doing it on purpose. It just so happened that he landed this way. But nevertheless, with one arm cocked back and the other extended ahead of him, he does look pretty freaking cool. It's a spectacular stance to strike with the way that he's crouched as low as he is while still extending each of his legs.
"What are you doing here?!", Eraserhead and Tomura Shigaraki simultaneously shout their surprised reactions to the vigilante's unexpectedly forced entry. Despite one being a licensed hero and the other a villain, they both throw quick glances at one another, acknowledging the jinxed moment.
"I was in the neighborhood", Spider-Man puts on an obnoxiously awful impression of an American NY accent. It doesn't earn any laughs. Maybe it's because he's slightly out of breath from rushing over here, so they probably know that he's full of shit. "It took me a bunch of web swinging to get in the neighborhood, but…" He backpedals for the sake of trying to explain to them why the joke is funny before realizing that it probably won't change their opinion on the quip, "Ah! Nevermind!"
Spider-Man gets rushed by the remaining troupe of villains surrounding him and Eraserhead. But rather than engaging them all at once or one at a time, he instead opts for a backflip that launches him high above their heads. They can't reach him in the sky nor can they do anything otherwise with Eraserhead erasing their quirks.
"Oi, Goggles!" Spidey calls out to the underground hero mid air, "Why don't you handle the grunts while I deal with Brutus?" Whether Eraserhead agrees to that plan or not, Spider-Man goes for Tomura Shigaraki's bodyguard.
"You really think you can defeat my Nomu?!", Shigaraki snarls at the spider that's landed in front of him. He wants nothing more than for Nomu to squash the menace to his operation.
Undaunted, Spider-Man shrugs. "It was only a thought."
The man child that is Tomura Shigaraki practically shrieks, "Then stop thinking and DIE!"
Spider-Man spins a web in order to hoist himself out of Shigaraki's reach. He narrowly evades getting grabbed. In order to give himself more distance, he pulls himself higher. When reaching a certain height, he deems that enough of a gap.
Instantly, he lets go of the present line of web and allows himself to descend. He wraps his arms tightly around himself so that he falls faster, bringing his legs up so that his knees come close to his chest, a human cannonball flung forward more or less the same as a slingshot. A couple feet above the ground, he breaks formation and fires a new web line. The sticky string catches a support beam so that he can swing himself at an angle which adjusts his downward drop to an upward arc. When gravity pulls him back down, he hits the ground right in front of the creature called Nomu.
Nomu lumbers forward, noticing the tiny being in front of its large mass. It's dark but shiny. Humanoid, but not quite. The darkness is total except for the pink puss patch of brain organ atop its head and debossed beak. The blackness is not a suit nor is it clothing of any kind. It's the creature's skin, gleaming like ebony polished to a high gloss. It's bipedal and has arms but there's something tentative about its hands. Its fingers lithe like tentacles but also appear as sharp as claws.
Spider-Man shudders. "I don't even wanna know what your story is, buddy!" He makes light of what he sees but there's a quivering in his voice when he delivers the quip. Whatever Nomu is, it's a sad scary thing worse than Frankenstein's monster.
It's unresponsive at first, as still as a statue. But when Shigaraki gives it a voice command, "Nomu", the monster's empty stare gains a slight sense of acute awareness, "Squash Spider-Man."
Its blank gaze fixes on Spider-Man. The creature heaves–
Spider-Man needs no hints from his Spider-Sense that he needs to MOVE. Spider-Man jumps straight up, lifting his legs hurriedly with the rest of himself as the creature shoots by underneath him.
He fires a web line to keep himself suspended. But then, his Spider-Sense stings him hard. So hard that he lets go of the web line that he's holding and drops. This is just as well, for right past the vigilante, whizzing through the air, the creature comes plunging past him in a superb and unlikely leap from ground level. He watches the thing slam into a wall instead of him before it clings there for a moment as if stunned.
The lenses on Spider-Man's mask can't possibly stretch themselves far enough to express the wide eyed stare that he gives what nearly barreled into him. Nomu's strength is to be expected just from a single glimpse at its bulging beastly bodily muscles, but its speed is incredible for a hulk of its bio-engineered nature.
Spider-Man practically THROWS himself away from the freakish thing. The game of keep away is all that's keeping him alive at the moment. His Spider-Sense screams that he keep moving and not stop even for a second.
As much as the vigilante would like to retaliate, it seems to be in his best interest that he not take any chances. He leaves the offense to the licensed professionals and sticks to defense – funnily enough, he has to let go of the wall that he clings to in order to keep being defensive – Spider-Man springs from spot to spot, occasionally feinting his movements to juke out the monstrosity giving him chase.
Eraserhead keeps track of the life or death game of tag using his peripheral vision. As much as he'd like to help – and though he's not sure that he would even be able to if he could – he's currently still too preoccupied with Tomura Shigaraki's mini militia. The underground hero grits his teeth, biting down to keep himself from screaming in frustration; he beats himself up over neither being able to protect his students or this reckless child of a vigilante.
Spider-Man thinks back to the time that he came up with an improvised move to combat Yo Shindo. It was fairly recent so it's not hard to recreate. A different applied pressure to the trigger of his web shooters releases a different type of web release. Small spurts of his formula fire out and ball themselves up. The projectiles bounce off of Nomu's chiseled chest, doing absolutely nothing.
Shigaraki cackles when he sees the futile attempt to stop the juggernaut of a creature. "What are those supposed to do?", the villain continues laughing while watching the same trick get repeatedly used in vain.
"Well.. They're supposed to hurt", Spider-Man admits that it's not the most effective countermeasure but keeps spraying a volley of web balls anyways. In some part of his mind, he likes to believe that they somehow slow Nomu down at the very least.
"Right idea", Shigaraki taps the side of his head before aiming that finger at the ground, "Wrong caliber!" The villain's loyal pet twists its malformed head to acknowledge its master's callout, "Nomu!" The exposed brain that it has must be smart enough to deduce what Shigaraki desires without an explicit explanation because it responds accordingly without anything else needed to be dictated.
Nomu drills its claw-like appendages into the ground beneath it. It then rips out of the floor a huge chunk of cement. A boulder broken loose is lifted above the monster's head as though the piece of rock weighs the same as a pebble.
Spider-Man jumps vertically, intercepting the tossed object rather than dodging. He latches on and rides it backwards. Spider-Man fires two web lines back down at the ground to stop it from carrying him any higher. Frictional force does the rest when he pulls on the wires that connect him and his waveless surfboard to the ground. Spider-Man uses the chunk of cement as a springboard and slingshots it right back at Nomu.
"Here! Use it to start a mineral collection!", Spider-Man finally has a projectile strong enough to launch at his enemy. Unfortunately, even the large lump of rock isn't enough to do any damage to the juggernaut of a beast. It breaks upon impact, dissolving into dust particles like it was made of dirt instead of something compact. And Nomu stands there remaining unphased, not even having budged a centimeter. "You could use another hobby aside from villainy..", Spidey finishes his quip anyways – it's become a force of habit to cover up his fear, and he's currently very afraid – he hopes that the villains will want to keep him alive for the sake of hearing the rest of his comedy act, if anything.
Nomu darts at Spider-Man, moving with an agility unprecedented for its size. But Spider-Man is agile too. The vigilante evades the creature by using leg over head movements not even the most flexible of people are capable of pulling off. And thanks to Spider-Man being smaller (much smaller) he's able to keep low to the ground where the Nomu has to constantly bend down. Spidey slides between the thing's legs, confusing it by getting behind it in an instant.
Tomura Shigaraki watches from the sidelines, eagerly awaiting the moment that Nomu catches the pesky spider staying at an arm's length from it. Whereas Eraserhead prays for that moment to never come, still fighting to clear the canon fodder of villains in order to get more involved.
Throughout this entire conflict in the USJ courtyard, an entirely different spectator has gone unnoticed the whole time. Thanks to her invisibility quirk, she has been able to keep hidden rather well. Toru Hagakure roots for her teacher and the vigilante to pull through. She herself wants to chip in and help but after witnessing Aizawa get one of his arms partially decayed and the Nomu's display of power, she knows that she would probably only be a liability if she did try something.
Little does she think to consider that by staying there to keep watching what happens rather than trying to slip away, she has still made herself a liability. When the Nomu charges at Spider-Man yet again, it's this time aimed in her general direction. She's not as fast as the vigilante is that him dodging the attack will mean the Nomu will ram into her instead. Hagakure thinks that she's going to die here without anybody even knowing.
But then, Spider-Man turns his head ever so slightly and she swears that he looks straight at her; it's as though the vigilante has a third sense of some kind that makes him aware of her presence there. She's seen him dodge the Nomu many of times. She knows he can do it again now. But he doesn't. Spider-Man stands his ground. He takes the Nomu's blow head on, shielding her from it.
Spider-Man's Spider-Sense hits him like a club on the back of his head. But he's hit a hell of a lot harder by the Nomu.
Spider-Man gets lifted off his feet. The power of the punch then carries him as far back as much as he flies high. His head, side, and right leg crunch and crack the wall he hits before fully bouncing off of it. In a blaze of pain, Spider-Man slides down to the floor, unable to catch himself or do anything other than lie there wheezing in agony from trying to catch his breath. HAVING to breathe.
Get up, get up, get up. Spider-Man hears one part of his brain ineffectively exhorting his body. His Spider-Sense is still trying to make him move even while he no longer can.
Somehow, he manages to lever himself up onto one elbow. He then wavers to his feet. The creature called Nomu turns its head slowly, noticing the vigilante's recovery.
Spider-Man turns and flees, not sure of where he's going but not really caring so long as he gets away from THAT thing. The Nomu is right behind him as he runs. He plunges over a railing, every breath a stab in his side. He stumbles, clutching his ribs.
Shoto Todoroki had captured the criminals sent with him with relative ease. Using only his mother's gifted quirk, and never his father's curse of a quirk, he froze over the monsoon zone. The artificial rain turned into an ice shower which then became a prison capable of restricting the movements of everyone caught within it. Todoroki tsks over how easily he was able to defeat the villains.
When interrogating them, all that they had to say was what he already knew. They're here to kill All Might. As if they could ever stand a chance… They remind him of his father's foolish ambition to surpass the symbol of peace. The gap in power is just too far great a gap. So he's really in no rush when walking his way out of the zone that he was sent to. He doesn't believe anyone would have trouble with weaklings like this.
Suddenly, a spray of shattered ice picks up and pelts him. He's tossed aside by a gust of wind colder than his cushioning of snow that he places behind himself. Something comes crashing through one of the mock buildings of the simulation site. It's only after the water vapor from Todoroki's quirk dissipates that he sees exactly what that something is. It's the giant creature that Aizawa warned him of. It's the thing that's supposedly the villain group's secret weapon to kill All Might.
Todoroki squints when he sees more than that. The living weapon isn't alone. Being chased by it is a much smaller being. A person. Todoroki gasps, a gust of condensation leaving his mouth. He recognizes the red and blue figure as a vigilante that his father is always ranting & raving about. That's undoubtedly Spider-Man who spins webs to try and trip up the beast following after him.
Manga Fukidashi trips over himself, falling backwards and landing on his rear. He's currently being crowded around by a trio of villains. The heat from the conflagration zone makes it feel as though he's in hell. As fiendish as these foes are, they may as well be demons.
"Any last words?", the female villain in the middle shows some kind of criminal courtesy as she produces a dagger.
And so Fukidashi shows her the same courtesy by warning her with a bubble of onomatopoeia that reads BOOM!
"Boom?", the woman tilts her head to the side as though reading it from a different angle will make it make sense. But that was the wrong move. She should have turned around instead.
Katsuki Bakugo blasts the villain and her equally evil allies with an explosion worthy of that boom onomatopoeia. They go down, singed in soot and smoking. The blonde is a walking arsenal, dressed up like the living grenade that he is.
Alongside him are Eijiro Kirishima and Fumikage Tokoyami, both boys with their hair spiked but one with a soft feather style and the other a sharp rocked gel used to get that look. Tokoyami drapes himself in a cloak. Whereas Kirishima extends a helping hand to get Fukidashi on his feet. "You okay?", Kirishima asks.
Used to expressing himself using bubbles rather than words, Fukidashi emotes with a thumbs up sticker. Despite being a bit shaken up, he truly is okay.
Speaking of things getting shaken up… the zone that they're in suddenly trembles and quakes. The group of boys fight to keep themselves stabilized while looking around for the source of what currently causes them to be put off balance. But then, as suddenly as it happened, the shaking stops.
"What was that?", Tokoyami asks the question that they all have on their minds.
Bakugo grunts; it's his way of saying he doesn't know. But he also has a way of telling them that he's going to find out. He begins walking his way out of the conflagration zone and back towards the courtyard from which they were transported.
"Whatever it was.. We'd better prepare ourselves", Kirishima follows behind the boy that he's been fighting alongside. Together, they've made a good team. And he wants to team up together some more. Even if it means confronting the cause of a small quake.
Tokoyami and Fukidashi look at eachother. There's not much for them to say since the decision of what to do has already been made for them. They're practically forced to tag along with Bakugo and Kirishima.
Capable of expressing himself with emojis just as much as he can with text, Fukidashi turns his face into the grimace icon.
Spider-Man grimaces behind his mask when he slams into the pavement beneath him. He's just been tossed out of the iced over monsoon zone and back into the courtyard. As though the Nomu planned on where he'd land, he just so happened to fall at the feet of Tomura Shigaraki.
"That's what I like to see", a single eye from Shigaraki glowers down at Spider-Man from between two fingers of the hand attached to his face. It's a much creepier facial covering than the web patterned mask that the vigilante has on, that's for sure.
Nomu stomps its way over to them, looming over both the fallen vigilante and its villainous master. It has stopped trying to squash Spider-Man for the time being but it's absolutely primed to perform that duty at any given notice. It shifts its beaked head towards Shigaraki, seeking either that directive or some other form of command.
"Good work, Nomu" Shigaraki praises his pet like a proud owner of a dog that's just performed a trick. Spidey fears that he's the treat about to be rewarded to the domesticated beast.
But fortunately for him, somebody else has a say in that. Eraserhead has finally defeated the last of the canon fodder between him and lending a helping hand. "No.. Kid..", the underground hero pauses when seeing that his delay nearly came at the cost of Spider-Man's life; though he's determined not to be too late to rescuing the boy now that he can, "Hang in there."
"Nomu", Shigaraki gets the attention of his bodyguard when he sees Eraserhead coming for him, "Now break the other one too."
Eraserhead lashes out with his capture cloth, attempting to bind the beast that plants itself between him and Shigaraki. Behind the underground hero's goggles, he has no trouble keeping his eyes open when they widen at what he witnesses next. Despite the binding band being comprised of a steel wire alloy woven with carbon nanofibers, the cloth snaps just from the monster's muscles merely flexing. Eraserhead keeps his quirk active, not allowing himself to blink; if that display of strength was the creature's base level strength, then he doesn't want to let it tap into any quirk enhancement to get even stronger.
But for the Nomu to carry out Shigaraki's order and break Aizawa, that base strength is all that it will need. It snatches Eraserhead by the leg and slams the underground hero into the ground. Blood paints the spot of impact. Eraserhead still tries to get up regardless. But when the Nomu sits on him with all of its weight, the pressure is just too great a force to push past.
"No!", Spider-Man starts his own struggle towards shifting himself up. He's been hurt but not badly enough to stay down. Not when it means the life of someone can be taken right in front of him.
Nomu grabs ahold of Eraserhead's already bum arm and makes it worse. A small twist to the side bends the limb at an unnatural angle. Aizawa fails to contain a shout of the agony he feels from it. The arm is now not just unresponsive but completely broken.
"No!", Spider-Man shouts while hurriedly pushing himself to get up faster. Tomura Shigaraki revels in hearing both the despair and desperation that he breaks into a maniacal laughter. The evil cackle only spurs Spider-Man on to keep fighting to his feet.
Nomu keeps a grip on Aizawa's arm, the loose limb becoming more mangled. The monster moves it around, twisting and turning the appendage. All that abnormal shifting starts to snap and sever more than just bone. Flesh rips and tears. The arm gets torn free. Blood pools out from both the stub of which the limb was removed and the limb itself.
"NO!", Spider-Man's cries are replaced by a raging roar. That does it. He bursts with energy that fuels him to fight.
Izuku Midoriya has always held back. On a lot of things in his life. Pulling his punches as Spider-Man was one of those things. Now, he does what he's never done before. He stops holding back. All strength to be spared is called upon and mustered up to accumulate into his fist. Spider-Man punches Nomu as hard as he can.
It's everything that he's got. All in one shot. He's never hit anything – anyone – has NEVER punched this hard before. The bones in his hand crack and shatter; his knuckles break as they cave in against what they push against. And he doesn't care. He pushes through the pain. He keeps giving the Nomu a full swing with all of his might.
There's a resounding thunderclap that comes from his fist colliding against the Nomu's jaw. It's loud enough to be heard from all around the USJ. Kyoka Jirou falls to her knees from the pain of the noise entering her ear canals. Those soundwaves become propagated uptakes of air. The wind gusts blow against everybody in the surrounding area.
Tomura Shigaraki is knocked back by the force. The hand covering his face flies off, forcibly removed by a strong wind current.
Itsuka Kendo shields herself with a set of supersized hands, blocking the blast with them. Even so, her ponytail flaps behind her as air funnels past.
Toru Hagakure is blown backwards, her fall braced by the backsplash of the bay behind her. It's the shipwreck zone's connecting end to the courtyard.
When the sound subsides with the impact recoil that it exuded, the damage that has been dealt from it is unveiled. The Nomu's bottom beak is snapped to the side, hanging loosely like Aizawa's arm had been broken. The monster's mouth is unhinged just beneath Spider-Man's fist, the creature's lopsided jaw swaying ever so slightly.
When Tomura Shigaraki is finishing reattaching the hand that fell off his face, he turns his attention to the stunning sight. He's overcome by both shock and horror, that soon shifts into a blind rage. What was bio-engineered to defeat All Might has somehow received damage from a brat with 'lower stats'.
Itsuka Kendo lowers her hands while simultaneously shrinking them back to their original size. In doing so, she reopens her view to the courtyard. When she sees what Spider-Man has done to the beast that brutalized her sensei, she's conflicted with feelings of all sorts.
Kyoka Jirou can still hear the residual sound that came with the cause of that damage dealt. It loops and replays in the back of her mind like a broken record. She's seen Spider-Man in action before. She had never imagined him capable of such a feat.
Watching from their hill within the landslide zone, the other Hero Course girls are in just as much awe. Ashido leans against Yaoyorozu for support. Asui and Tokage are unable to take their eyes off of the battle blow below.
Coming up from the bay that she fell in, Hagakure is breathless. She's drenched in a mix of cold sweat and water. It makes her shiver. But she too is unable to look away.
Izuku first registers the result of his punch on the Nomu. And then secondly the damage dealt to himself. His hand hangs just as limp as the beast's beak. Holes are torn through his glove where his knuckles hemorrhaged. Blood seeps out from his injured hand, dripping and mingling with the red of his glove. Instantly, Izuku regrets losing control of his emotions and letting loose like that. Whether it's because of what he did to the Nomu or himself – or both – he's not able to think coherently enough to decide due to the pulsating pain in his hand.
Spider-Man's Spider-Sense helps him hone his mind on more than just the pain. But when he realizes that his Spider-Sense is what helped him regain focus and awareness, it's too late to what it is that he's regained awareness of. Which is the Nomu starting to react.
The monster's mouth twitches. Its jaw rapidly snaps back into place. Regaining function of its beak, it opens and closes the previously mangled maw to test what's been fixed. The Nomu's pointed teeth clack together and its crows a chilling coo upon having healed itself.
The creature throws its head up and produces a high piercing soprano roar, a bizarre sound to come from inside a chest so big.
Tomura Shigaraki's anger subsides as he's filled with elation instead. The giddy man child is overcome by a giggle fit that soon morphs into maniacal laughter much like he had laughed before when having his villainous way.
Izuku has to take a step back when seeing that Nomu can repair itself even after tanking his strongest attack possible. He's in a similar state as Eraserhead was. Down an arm and still opposing overwhelming odds. Up until now it had been streamers and thieves. Sure, he's had his close brushes – but for some reason, this time is just … different. It's not like when he had to steer a plane or stop a train. It's not like having to walk off a stab wound. This is something different. This is the type of thing that licensed pro heroes like All Might deal with.
Even so… He's got a great power and with it comes a great responsibility. He isn't just a quirkless Deku or mild mannered Izuku Midoriya. He's The Spectacular Spider-Man. Spider-Man clenches his still functional hand into a fist. He cocks it back. And he prepares to give it another shot. All that he has in him again. No holding back.
Spider-Man's fist gets caught in the Nomu's oversized palm, smacking the solid mass the way a fastball would get driven into a catcher's mitt. Before Spider-Man can retract his hand, Nomu's tendrils for fingers curl over and grab hold. Spider-Man tugs and pulls in an effort to get his hand free but the monster has him.
It squeezes. Izuku's other hand breaks. It bends at the wrist when the Nomu tightens its hold on him further. He can't contain a cry of absolute pain the way that neither Aizawa could when forcibly having a bone broken.
The Nomu rears back its other hand, now forming that into a fist of its own. It's going to pulverize Spider-Man into the pavement. From his place on the ground, still trying not to pass out from blood loss, Eraserhead keeps his erasure quirk active on the monster. It's a futile effort to limit the creature's strength. But that's all the licensed hero can do to try and save the kid about to be killed.
The girls on the hill outside the landslide zone look away, not wanting to witness a murder. Hagakure does the same, unable to watch the person that saved her get killed. Itsuka Kendo and Kyoka Jirou are torn between wanting to run in and help and wanting to run away.
Just as all hope seems to be lost… "I AM HERE!" Hope itself arrives.
All Might. The Number One Ranked Hero. The Symbol Of Peace. Donned in red and blue colors much like Spider-Man, the massive man stands tall & proud as a physical match for Nomu.
"Ah.. The main level boss has finally arrived", Tomura Shigaraki shifts his focus from killing Spider-Man to wanting to kill All Might when he's reminded of why he came to the USJ to begin with.
All Might had blown the entryway's doors off their hinges upon arrival. He needs both removed in order to fit through the frame. High above his head are two tufts of blonde hair. It makes him appear taller than he already is. And compared to everybody in the room, he's mighty high up on the pedestal.
The Hero Course students should all feel relief now. But there's something off. The signature smile that All Might usually has on his face is missing. It's replaced by an angry frown. They already knew the situation was dire but seeing even All Might on edge lets them know how severe it truly is.
"How dare you endanger children to get to me", All Might glares at Shigaraki with righteous blue eyes. The villain's red stare locks with the hero's.
In an instant, so fast that it seems like teleportation, All Might zooms to retrieve Eraserhead and Spider-Man. The hero moves them away from Nomu and over to Kendo & Jirou.
"I'm sorry for being late..", All Might sees the damage done to the two that he pulled away from the villains and regrets having not been here sooner. It's only thanks to Tenya Iida having run to U.A in order to alert the staff that All Might even knew to come to the USJ. Had it not been for Young Iida, he would have likely never arrived to help at all. "More reinforcements are on the way. I just couldn't wait for them and had to get here sooner just in case. I'm glad that I ran ahead."
"All Might..", Itsuka grabs ahold of the man's arm to get his attention. When she has it, she points towards Nomu. "That thing down there", she warns him of the weapon specifically meant for him, "Be careful", especially since she saw that it's not just all talk, "Spider-Man broke its jaw and it somehow repaired itself."
All Might nods, receiving the message loud and clear. "Healing AND strength, eh? No matter! You needn't worry, Young Kendo" But nevertheless, he still turns towards the monster fully prepared to face it, "You can leave it to me."
While that may put Jirou at ease, it doesn't soothe Kendo's concerns. Itsuka knows the truth about All Might, being his successor and all. She knows the real reason why he wasn't going to come to the USJ field trip is because he overdid it with the remaining amount of power his quirk allows him to use. He's been reduced to a time limit. Thanks to his morning patrol, he doesn't have a whole lot of gas left in the tank.
She can't openly share her worries about OFA, but she has to say SOMETHING. She starts, "But–"
"Trust me", but All Might stops her from even trying. He reassures her, "It'll be fine" She looks up to her mentor. She wants to believe him.
"You shouldn't lie to the kiddies", Shigaraki interjects into their moment with his malicious intent. The villain is tired of waiting for them to finish their talk. He calls for action, "Aren't you supposed to be all about truth and justice?"
"Yes", and All Might is willing to give it to him. All Might connects a fist to a palm, demonstrating what's about to go down. "Allow me to show you the true meaning of justice!"
All Might thrusts himself forward. Nomu dashes at the hero to meet the rush head on with a rush of its own. When they collide, the ground beneath them fractures from the frictional forces that oppose one another.
All Might grunts from the strain of having to wrestle a being as strong as he is. He hadn't expected it to ACTUALLY go toe to toe with him. He's had punks challenge him before. Most typically aren't able to live up to their bravado. But this beast…
"Rip him limb from limb, Nomu!" Shigaraki cheers on the abomination of an invention. It truly was created to combat the number one hero, putting All Might's strength to the test now that it's commanded to unleash its full potential.
An exchange of fists occurs. Every hit traded rumbles and ruptures the USJ. This is a licensed pro hero going all out as compared to a vigilante. It's as amazing as it is disturbing a staggering difference in power.
All Might realizes that the punching isn't really getting him anywhere though. And between himself who's already running on expired fumes & the bio-engineered killing machine, he's not willing to test who has the greater endurance. So he does something drastic. He ducks under the Nomu's next punch and goes for the creature's abdominal area. All Might wraps his arms around the monster's waist and performs a wrestling takedown on it.
He dives the Nomu's head into the ground by bending himself backwards, a super slam unlike any other. All Might would have likely been able to bury the beast with that move. If not for a warpgate appearing beneath them for the monster's top half to safely pass through instead.
"Looks like I returned at the proper time", Kurogiri arrives alongside Electro to stand beside Tomura Shigaraki. It took a while for Kaminari to get into costume in order to keep his villainous identity a secret, but they made up for it with this assist.
"Let's see him keep his strength up with muscle spasms", Electro lends additional aid to their evil plan by blasting All Might with high voltage beams.
Not even the number one hero can completely stand strong against that shock coupled with the Nomu digging its claws into his weak spot. He bleeds from the reopened injury and then from his mouth. Slowly, he loses the strength to resist against the Nomu also dragging him towards Kurogiri's warpgate so that they can both be drawn into it.
"When he goes through.. Close it halfway and split him in half", Shigaraki snickers while watching All Might gradually inch closer to certain demise.
"That's the plan", Kurogiri is more patient about it but sounds as equally pleased by their strategy slowly working.
"Damn.. How did they know.. ?", All Might can't fathom how the villains could concoct this scheme since his injury was kept secret from the general public. He worries that the reason they were so bold and brazen about this attack is because they also know the injury caused him to grow weaker.
Spider-Man sits up when seeing All Might start to lose. But Itsuka is the first to stop him; she places a hand over the spider emblem on his chest and holds him back. "What are you doing?", she asks.
"Somebody has to help him", Spider-Man murmurs so that Kendo can hardly hear him but Jirou catches it. She seconds the decision to place a hand on Spider-Man in order to keep him in check.
"You're too injured", Jirou feels Spider-Man's heartbeat against her hand. It beats as bravely as it sounds to her ears. And so she knows that he doesn't care about being hurt, that she and Kendo must work together to prevent him from recklessly running in.
Thankfully, he doesn't have to. Shoto Todoroki comes to All Might's rescue instead. An ice trail stems from the boy's foot that stomps down onto the scene. That ice then glaciers and climbs onto the Nomu until encasing it.
And if that weren't enough to lend aid to the pro hero, Katsuki Bakugo provides assistance by blasting Kurogiri in the back with an explosion. Bakugo slams the warping villain to the ground where he threatens to blast the bad guy again. "I knew there's a body under all that smoke! I wasn't gonna miss and mess up a second time", Bakugo grins now that he finally bested the baddie.
All Might gets free from Nomu's grip and escapes Kurogiri's portal before it can close on him. Thanks to the efforts of the Hero Course boys, he's still in one piece.
Spider-Man stares through wide eyed lens. He only looks away when additional members of 1-A arrive. Fukidashi, Kirishima, and Tokoyami join him with Jirou & Kendo.
"Whoa.. What happened here?", Kirishima's face pales when he sees the sorry states that his teacher and Spider-Man are in. Aizawa is missing an arm, rendered unconscious. And the vigilante, while still having both arms still attached, has each of the hands at the ends of them completely broken.
Itsuka glances back in the direction of where the Nomu struggles to move despite being frozen solid. "That thing down there nearly killed Aizawa-Sensei", she hates remembering what she saw it do but takes some pleasure in at least one part of the recollection, "Spider-Man punched it really hard."
Kirishima's eyes widen when he hears how Spider-Man wound up injured. "He punched it so hard that he broke his hands.. ?", he exhales in awe and his eyes gain a twinkle to them as he mutters, "So manly.."
But in this battle of man versus beast, it's the beast that still continues to walk with a more powerful presence. The ice encasing Nomu cracks and crumbles. Its frozen limbs break off and shatter when falling to the floor. But it continues moving forward anyways. A zombified corpse drags itself forward.
What's more horrifying than that is when the ebony flesh that's missing starts to return. Muscle fibers take shape and reform around protruding bones. Nomu heals itself like it did with its beak. Except that this recovery is a body horror unlike any other.
"Oi! Call that fucking freak of a thing off!", Bakugo barks an order at Shigaraki when he sees the Nomu nearly completed in returning to its former glory. To add some incentive to forcing the villain to follow that command, he pops off a few miniature explosions near Kurogiri who's still pinned beneath him. "Or else I blast your buddy here to smithereens!", he threatens Shigaraki and the warp villain simultaneously.
Shigaraki stares at Bakugo, a cold heavy air hanging in between them that's not just coming from the residue of Todoroki's shattered ice. What Bakugo expects to come out of the villain's mouth certainly isn't a counter order, "Deal with the brat.."
Bakugo tsks, thinking that Shigaraki is ordering the Nomu to attack him. But it's from behind that Bakugo gets attacked. By Electro. Electricity zaps Bakugo off of Kurogiri.
"Always wanted to do that to him", Kaminari relishes in being able to electrocute Bakugo. His only regret is that the boy doesn't know it was really him yet. He smirks behind his mask.
Watching the tide of the battle get turned once again in the favor of the enemy, Spider-Man is unable to just lay back and do nothing. He nudges the girls that are still holding onto him, getting their attention. "Quickly", he says while indicating with his head to his wrists, "Take and use my web shooters."
"Your webs aren't organic?", Jirou asks what everyone around the vigilante is surprised and wondering about. But that question doesn't wait for her or Kendo to detach and take the support equipment as Spider-Man told them to.
"Press down on the trigger as hard as you can", Spider-Man talks them through how to use the devices since he no longer can with either of his busted hands, "It takes a lot so make sure you really give it your all."
Spider-Man wasn't exaggerating. Jirou requires help from Kirishima to make hers work. And Kendo requires a boost from OFA to have enough strength for her own. They aim the web shooters and hit the triggers on them.
THWIP! Fukidashi supplies a sound effect of onomatopoeia to go along with the fired web lines.
Both strings make their mark. One web line attaches itself to the back of Shoto Todoroki and the other grabs ahold of Katsuki Bakugo. Both boys are yanked out of harm's way and reeled in by the girls.
Spider-Man had designed the web shooters to only function with the pressure force that his quirk allows him to have should they fall into the wrong hands. He's glad now that there are others capable of matching that needed strength should the support gear need to be used by hands as right as his.
All Might gives the group of brave teenagers a nod of appreciation. Now that there's nobody near him and the Nomu to get caught in the crossfire, he's able to engage with the creature again without having to worry about holding back. All Might sends the monster reeling with an uppercut that upturns its head.
"Don't you realize that it's no use? Nomu absorbs all of your hits that it's as useless as hitting a punching bag", Shigaraki doesn't notice the shift in power that All Might is now fighting with until after Nomu is sent reeling again, "Wait.. How is that possible?!"
"Don't YOU know, villain?!" All Might's frown is replaced by his signature smile now that he knows he's bested the bad guys. "It's all about going beyond PLUS ULTRA!", he uses the school motto to encourage the spectators from U.A's Hero Course. And then applies all of his power to a punch that sends Nomu rocketing into the sky and out through the opening that Spider-Man had previously made in the ceiling.
The secret to how he pulled it off is that he channeled his power into his punches so that the amount of it being absorbed would soon become overwhelming to the Nomu. All quirks have their limits. And thus, as a glass would overfill if it were to have too much water in it, the Nomu was unable to continue stockpiling the years worth of stockpiled power All Might has in him.
"You.. You must have cheated!", Shigaraki starts to throw a tantrum when he sees that his plan has failed. He's still too young in his villain career to take the loss for what it is. He has a fit that Kurogiri is unable to quell, "That's hacks! It's not fair!"
"It wasn't very fair when you ganged up on me earlier", All Might chuckles at the villain's double standard. But all humor is gone from him when his toothy smile becomes an angry sneer, "Wanna try that again now that your secret weapon is gone?", the man's tough tone turns intimidating.
Kirishima claps his hands together, "Welp! Looks like it's a wrap!" He calls it how he sees it, "We can always count on All Might to finish the job!"
Todoroki hums in agreement. As does Tokoyami. Most of everyone there begins leaving the USJ behind, heading for the exit behind them now that the danger is dealt with.
Jirou breathes a sigh of relief. But she can't relax completely just yet. She draps an arm of Spider-Man's over her shoulders, careful not to hurt his hand at the end of it. "C'mon.. Help me get Aizawa-Sensei and Spider-Man up", she turns towards Kendo to get her help with the rest.
But Itsuka is too distracted to listen. The redhead keeps staring ahead at where All Might has a standoff with the remaining villains. She's worried about her mentor's time limit running out. He's not moving. If he were able to, he'd probably have already taken the bad guys out. All Might isn't trying to give them a fair chance. He's bluffing because he has no other choice but to stall.
"Kendo?", Jirou is confused as to why her friend is still sticking around. She doesn't know any better.
But Spider-Man has an idea of what's going on. When he follows Itsuka's gaze in the direction of All Might, he somewhat understands to a certain extent. At the very least, Spider-Man comes to the conclusion that All Might still needs help. And this time because everybody is already walking away, the only one that can give the hero help is him.
"H- Hey!", Jirou is startled & surprised when Spider-Man slips out of her hold on him. He leaves her behind, racing towards the courtyard.
Electro sends a streak of electricity towards All Might. But before the energy beam can collide with its intended target, Spider-Man throws himself in the way of it. He winds up taking the hit instead. As though the arachnid themed vigilante just got shocked by a bug zapper, he's blasted aside.
"NO!", All Might watches as the brave boy takes the brunt of the attack for him. He's in awe of the heroic act, "Kid.. Why'd you do that.. ?", but is unable to forgive himself for not having been the one to shelter the kid instead of it being the other way around.
Electro is in just as much disbelief. He looks between Kurogiri and Shigaraki, the three of them trying to discern what just happened. But more importantly.. "What's the matter, All Might? Not gonna try and stop us from killing the web creep?", they're curious as to why the hero hasn't made a move and only the vigilante has.
All Might clenches his hands into fists at his sides. It's about all that he can do when it comes to the amount of movement he's capable of while still maintaining his muscle form. "Dammit..", he grits his teeth as blood seeps out from each corner of his mouth. He's pushed himself past his limit already. He's not able to do anything.
Shigaraki cocks his head to the side. His anger diminishes. It's replaced by curiosity. "I don't know why you can't move to stop us..", and that curiosity gives birth to the type of villainy that his master before him has been trying to teach him, "But this is much better than just killing you..Yes, this must be what Sensei told me about.." Shigaraki smiles a wicked smile as he treads towards the fallen form of Spider-Man, "Watch helplessly as we kill this brat first."
Hearing the mention of a master higher in a position of power than the villain leader currently present makes All Might sweat. Someone from within the shadows pulling strings and manipulating events to transpire a certain way matches the M.O of his arch nemesis. And his arch nemesis is the one who gave him his injury that prohibits his power. That evil mastermind would surely know how to attack him where he's weak in such a way as this.
Shigaraki's steps ceasing when he gets to Spider-Man pulls All Might's worries back to the present moment. The villain squats down to get at Spider-Man's current level. He's drawing this out to make it as excruciating as possible.
"Say goodbye Spider-Man", Tomura Shigaraki reaches for the vigilante's mask with an outstretched hand; the League Of Villains leader intends to decay that first.
Before it can make contact though, a bullet penetrates the villain's hand. Shigaraki shrieks as he's shot again. Once more in the shoulder. And then in the leg.
Having arrived in the knick of time, standing at the entrance to the USJ, are the other pro heroes staffed at U.A. Snipe, the sharpshooting western themed hero, dual wields two pistols as he shoots at Shigaraki some more.
Kurogiri opens a warpgate behind Tomura Shigaraki as bullets fly. The villain gets shot into the portal, knocked backwards. The warpgate then closes.
"Goodbye", Spider-Man groans from his place on the ground.
Kurogiri also warps away Electro and himself. The villains escape before the heroes can reach them. But they do reach All Might and Spider-Man. Just in time for All Might's time limit to end.
Cementoss puts up a barrier to block All Might's transformation. The pro hero is reduced to a deflated form. One kept hidden from the general public. Spider-Man recognizes who he sees. It suddenly makes sense to him why Itsuka was so worried. All Might is the same guy as the one who was with her on the beach.
Toshinori Yagi rushes over to Spider-Man's side. After witnessing the boy take such a violent hit for him, he's not all that concerned about his form being exposed. He's more worried about the kid that's battered and bruised on the ground instead of him.
He goes to hold the boy's hand, hoping to offer some sort of comfort, but stops when he sees both hands are completely broken. He slowly blinks his eyes. Though they're sunken in, they're still capable of watering with tears. "Kid.. If there's anything I can do for you–"
Spider-Man weakly attempts to raise one of his arms. It flops against Toshinori's chest. Surely, if the hand attached to it wasn't broken, it'd be gripping the man's clothing. "I've got secrets too…", the vigilante softly whispers something that makes Toshinori lean in, "If you understand why we gotta keep them.. Please.."
Toshinori opens his mouth, but he's too choked up to say anything in response. He does know what it's like to have a secret. He knows why it's important to keep secrets like the ones he does when it's for the greater good. Whether it be for everyone or only the people that he himself cares about … that's as good a reason as any.
But what this boy is asking him to do… Vigilantes are illegal. For them to hide their identity from the law as well is an even greater offense. Toshinori shakes his head. Even though Spider-Man is just a kid, and even though he does understand and owe the boy a favor, he doesn't want to make a promise that he can't keep.
"Please.. Don't let them unmask me..", but when this brave boy who's name Toshinori doesn't even know asks him for the favor directly … he changes his mind.
Spider-Man fought to save lives today. If not for him, All Might would have been too late. And Spider-Man doesn't even want any recognition or acknowledgement for it like most licensed heroes would. All that Spider-Man asks for in return is the opposite.
So Spider-Man can rest easy in Toshinori's arms. The masked character will be known as only exactly who he is and nobody else, which is Spider-Man.
AUTHOR NOTES
Not only was this the longest chapter that I've written, but it was probably my favorite (for obvious reasons). While formulaic narratives are nice sometimes, I felt things were getting too repetitive with Izuku ditching his classes for villains of the week, so I felt it was time to spice things up. And the way that this chapter went and ended probably gives you a good idea of how that can go.
But yes, thank you Pikapowerz for reminding me to confirm that Yo Shindo was Shocker - as well as thank you for reading some of my other works!
And thank you as well CapoPerk for the support! There might be some foreshadowed things in this chapter that set up more of those crossover media blendings that you speak of!
Oh, Wynnt'r, I can assure you that there will be a Sinister Six but I can also assure you that they won't be the biggest fans of dear Deku!
The link between Shocker and Shindo's vibrations was just too good a coincidence to not utilize! As per Shinso knowing or not, you may or may not be onto something; I do love the 'do they know?' element that comes with a lot of Spidey characters!
On that note, among the many questions that this chapter undoubtedly left you with - like what the League Of Villains want with Ojiro - the biggest concern is whether or not All Might will be able to keep his promise to Izuku that the secret identity stays secret! Find out next time!
