Nicky's pov
(A/N: Nicky and Peter are Reagan-Kavinsky instead of Boyle, to better reconcile the To All The Boys I've Loved Before aspect of Peter being known mostly by initials PK or simply Kavinsky in those books and movies)
I had come back to New York from my job in San Francisco to spend some time with my family, and I was very excited. Not only was I going to be able to see my cousins Jack and Sean, both on a college break, but now we had more cousins. Not just Joe, who stole my crown as the oldest grandchild, but we had recently added five babies to the lineup. Aunt Eddie and Uncle Jamie had Eric Frances and Maryella Jane, and Joe and his wife Laurie had inaugurated the fifth generation with Connor Joseph, Starla Jean and Dustin James. Another relatively new family member that would be present was Aunt Jessilyn, Uncle Danny's long-lost twin sister, who had turned out to be one of his first partners, Jackie Curatola, all along. Now she worked alongside Uncle Danny and Detective Maria Baez, who Danny had some not-so-hidden feelings for. My brother Peter and I also had plans to meet up with our Dad while we were both here, as we had been in contact with him more frequently, and he was proving to be able to step up to the plate a lot more. I'm brought out of my thoughts as people started swarming through the door of Grandpa and Pop's house.
Not surprisingly, the four newfound parents and their collective five babies were amongst the last to enter, having the car seats and diaper bags to carry in, with family members warming around their bundles of joy to boot. The final person to enter was Aunt Jessie, having come back from a meeting with IAB, about how Uncle Danny had handled a case after the one of Peter's kidnapping. IAB was speaking to Maria, their other partner, right this moment. Oh, Uncle Danny. Aunt Jess broke the silence, eyeing Joe intently
"You ok, Joe? You look rough. More than just from the job or triplets. Everything ok?"
That caught everyone's attention, and we all turned to the young Detective in question. He sighed, letting out a long exhale as he rubbed a tired hand over his face
"It's my mother."
Instantly all at the table let out the same breath and winced
"10-4".
And with that NYPD code, we basically were saying 'copy that'. As in, say no more, we get it. Because Paula Hill was a tough, tough cookie. Uber proud of her heritage in Warwick, Rhode Island. Had met Uncle Joe in the NYPD Academy, but had gotten pregnant and dropped from the face of the Earth as far as we had known, since it was Sean who found Joe through a school assignment. Paula had not even told Uncle Joe about the pregnancy, and only told Cousin Joe about his father after he did the DNA test and was well into his 20s, already a high ranking Detective in the NYPD. He sighed
"Thanks, but you all need to know this. She's running for Mayor, and there's a very high chance she could win, Grandpa. And I know your co-existance with each other is rocky, no fault of yours, since you didn't toss me from the force when she demanded it. I'm sorry."
No one was expecting that. Grandpa broke the silence after a quick beat, Cousin Laurie holding Joe's hand
"Thanks for the heads' up. I'm so sorry you've found yourself in this position."
Joe shrugged
"My mother is how she is. I would not be surprised if this was a strategized petty attack against everything every one of you has built."
Making things worse, her only opponent was another thorn in Grandpa's side, the former Mayor Dutton. Oh boy...
TIMESKIP NEXT DAY
Peter's pov
I was waiting with Nicky in one of our favorite Italian places, waiting for our Dad, Defense Attorney Jack Kavinsky arrive. Over the last few weeks we had both been in contact with him every day we had seen a few genuine changes in him, for the way better. My sister spoke
"I can hardly believe how much Dad has changed."
I nodded
"Seriously. It's a miracle. Jack Kavinsky actually grew up."
Surprising us, causing us to startle, our Dad snuck up behind us and spoke
"But it's true. And I'm ready for responsabilities I had not been before. I'm ready to be a family man again. Husband, father..."
We hugged him
"We're so happy."
He smiled
"Me too. Now, a few years back, your mother and I fooled around a bit, but I still was not ready to recommit. I am now."
Nicky and I smiled
"We're so glad. And we're gonna help you fall back in the good graces with the Reagans. All of them."
He hugged us in appreciation as we ordered our food, and we dug in when it finally arrived, and we caught him up on our family expansions over genuine Italian spaghetti. In turn, he got us up to speed with his firm and his sports hobbies. Then we started to brainstorm Operation Get Mom and Dad Back Together.
