Peter's pov

That night Aus, Dallas and Evie were staying with Grandpa and Pop while Covey and I took Trevor and Chris to Little Italy, personally one of my favorite places. I mean, Let's just be honest. The food is pretty hard to beat. We had gotten situated in a little corner booth in a pizza joint and promptly ordered two cheese pies. Trevor smiled like when we were teens as the food arrived

"Alright! Bring on the 'za!"

For reasons unknown, that is what he has always called pizza. That alone elicited a slew of giggles from all of us, then the pro athlete asked

"So, LJ, Pete, how's life?"

We smiled

"Pretty sweet."

Chris interjected

"With the bakery doing so well and with Pop in your life to boot, I don't doubt that. How's writing, LJ? And police work, PK? And tell us what we missed with the kids, they're so big!"

We got them up to speed with the kids first, telling them about how they had taken after Covey and actually loved school. Then LJ gave some details about her next book, a murder mystery. In turn, I told a few stories about life on the job, in particular the undercover ops with Joe. Seizing the opportunity, I snagged the last slice of pizza, making my three companions laugh at the familiar gesture of my younger years

"Always hogging the last slice of pizza"

Trevor laughed

"And I'M the growing athlete now!"

I shrugged

"The NYPD is athleticism on a whole other level. Besides, old habits die screaming."

Turning the tables on our friends, my wife and I asked

"So, how are you both? Pro lacrosse and ESL in Costa Rica."

Trevor nodded

"I honestly did not know they liked lacrosse, but Chris wanted a gap year and I followed her. Things worked out."

My wife's best friend shrugged

"I'm the last person to ever imagine I'd go into teaching, but these kids are so sweet and are trying so hard. It's so rewarding."

Lara Jean and I were in the middle of congratulating them when I heard a very familiar sound. Shots fired at the restaurant. I shoved my wife and friends under the booth for maximum security, glad I had my personal weapon on me at all times. There were three intruders, one at the register, one robbing the other patrons, the other engaging with me. I quickly took his kneecaps out of commission, slugging the shoulder of the cash robber and the third perp. I was calling for busses and backup when I was shot on my collarbone again, making my wife and friends scream. The good thing was that Joe and Uncle Danny got there right after, taking control of the situation while my friends and wife followed me to the hospital. Luckily, I wasn't badly hurt, but would be on modified assignment for a while.
