"Why is he here with us?" Dr. Oobleck whispered to his fellow academic Prof. Port as he glanced at the person sitting next to them in the announcer box, Courrier was sitting there; Dr. Oobleck did not like Courrier, not after what happened with that train.
"Are you talking about me?" Courrier pointed at himself with that dumb expression on his face, Prof. Port leaned past Oobleck and shook his head, "No, no, nothing of the sort! We're just discussing the Tournament match-ups right Dr. Oobleck?" Port peek an eye out to glare at Oobleck, silently convincing him to drop the topic immediately.
Dr. Oobleck turned to Courrier, "Ah-ha, that's right! The Vytal Tournament is very important to both our culture and our student's development!"
"Okay… but what's really important are the fights right?" Courrier's face lit up as he asked that question, Oobleck slightly grimaced, remembering that smile from the train incident.
"Precisely! Making sure these battles are exciting for everyone else is our job!" Prof. Port then slyly added, "And maybe make a bit of side-cash as well if you know what we're saying…"
"Oh yeah, way ahead of you, I have thousands of Lien already dedicated to certain fighters that I know are going to win," Courrier cackled, taking out a piece of paper with the entire Tournament bracket drawn on it, "The ones I marked with 'X' have, at the very least, about twelve-hundred Lien betted on them! If I win this, it's drinks for everybody after the Tournament!"
"Now that's the spirit!" Dr. Oobleck watched in confusion as Prof. Port began excitedly talking about the students that he placed bets on with Courrier, "Between you and me and Oobleck, I've made at least a few thousand Lien in the past two Tournaments!"
"Hell yeah dude! High five!" they reached over and high-fived each other, while Oobleck was still sitting in the middle of course, "We're going to be rich men after this!"
"Guys, guys, aren't we supposed to not take bets? I feel like this is a bit out of hand here! We're teachers! We're supposed to teach them good, moral things!" Oobleck tried, futilely, to convince the other two Announcers to drop their betting schemes.
Prof. Port nudged him with his shoulder, "Listen Oobleck, when you get to my age, you're going to do things that you're not proud of… That makes you fat stacks and bank so is it really that bad?"
"Exactly! You've already lived a long and happy life, now it's time to earn as much capital as possible!" Courrier clenched his fist and grinned widely, "Fuck living rich and dying broke! I'm gonna live rich and die rich too!"
"Right on the money, friend! High five!" they high-fived each other again, Oobleck can feel his blood pressure rise slowly.
He opened his thermos and raised it to his lips, expecting the cold coffee brew would relieve him of this growing anger he felt inside of him only to find… nothing. The thermos was empty, the Tournament was starting, and he can't leave the Announcer's box while being stuck between his once fellow academic and a 'reformed' terrorist.
"Alright! Let's get this show on the road!" Courrier cheered, leaning towards his microphone, "Hello everyone from all walks of Remnant! And welcome to the fortieth Vytal Festival! Broadcasted LIVE from the Amity Colosseum floating just above your heads!"
Cheering erupted from the stands, much to Oobleck's displeasure, "Haha! That's right folks! Today we're joined by a new addition to the Beacon staff; Mr. Courrier will now explain the rules of the Tournament!"
"Wait I thought that was your job?" Oobleck asked genuinely, whipping his head towards the professor.
"Bah! Mr. Courrier lost a bet we took yesterday so he has to take up my job too!" the crowd laughed at Port's joke… well, they think it's a joke but Oobleck knows otherwise.
"On the left side, our left that is, is Beacon's very own team RWBY! EVERYONE CHEER! NOW!" loud whoops and hollers erupted from the Vale stands as the people cheered for their Academy's team, despite all of his faults with blowing up a train and killing a bunch of civilians, Oobleck had to give Courrier some credit here, the man was a professional crowd pleaser, "And on the right side! Still our right is team ABRN of Haven Academy!"
Loud cheering played from the other side this time, everyone seemed to be pumped up for the upcoming battle, "But before the battle can truly begin, for all those first time watchers out there allow me to go through the ins-and-outs of the Tournament!"
"The Tournament system is divided into three different subcategories! That being singles, doubles, and teams! Pretty self-explanatory right?" the crowd all screamed out 'YES' as Courrier laughed, a wide grin on his face, he seemed to be having the time of his life here, "In this Tournament, everything goes! Age? Doesn't matter! School-year? Doesn't matter! What matters the most is winning!"
"And skill!" Oobleck cuts in at the end, Courrier nodded, "Yeah, that too!"
"Right now we are in the team bracket! The winner of this battle will get the option to pick two of their team members to represent them in the next round, which is doubles!" Port held up two fingers before putting one down, "And then the winner of that round will pick one, final lucky champion to fight for the singles round!"
"The singles round will have their own bracket comprised of other winners from other teams as well! That means that you'll have to fight through them all to finally, FINALLY achieve that victory for their kingdom!" Courrier then stage-whispered to the microphone, "…Of course, we all know what kingdom will win this Tournament now do we fellow Valeans?!"
The Vale side exploded into affirmations and cheers as the other side booed the competition, "THAT'S RIGHT! WE'RE GOING TO WIN THIS! VALE REPRESENT!"
"Alright, settle down Courrier, maybe the other kingdoms will have a chance at winning too!" Oobleck patted Courrier on the shoulder, urging the man to calm down and not incite a riot inside the Colosseum.
"Correct! As you said earlier, this Tournament is 'everything goes'!" Port chuckled, "Both teams have trained their hardest for this! I'm especially excited for team JNPR's match against team BRNZ, I heard that you've been personally training Mr. Jaune Arc, correct?"
"That's right, Port, after the hell that I forced that kid through, he better win this or I'll be upping his training regime," Courrier laughed evilly, "If he doesn't win this… I'll make sure he never walks again…"
The crowd goes silent.
"ARE BOTH TEAMS READY?!" Courrier glanced down at the two teams; the people began cheering again, "Let the match… BEGIN!"
Oobleck watched in excitement as both teams dashed towards one another, but it's clear which team had more training and experience prior to the match as he glanced at Courrier, who was busy downing some strange white tablets before screaming into the microphone, "And a spectacular start from team RWBY with their team leader Ruby Rose showing off her new specialized sniper rounds!"
True enough, Ruby slammed her Scythe onto the ground, using the blade as a stabilizer as she lined up her shots, bracing herself as she depressed on the trigger. A thunderous boom exploded from the barrel of the Scythe, clearing a radius of dust around Ruby as a member of team ABRN, a kid named Bolin, was flung right out of the arena with their Aura shattered in just one shot aimed directly at his forehead! The recoil was nothing to scoff at too as Ruby promptly fell on her back as her Scythe violently jerked back, the bottom of the handle violently jabbing into her shoulder, damaging her Aura by quite a large amount.
"ONE DOWN! THREE MORE TO GO!" Courrier unashamedly showed his bias towards team RWBY as he yelled into the microphone, his words being met with thunderous applause and cheers from the Vale side, "Allow me to explain these specialty bullets, so that the other kingdoms might actually have a chance next year! HAHA!"
"We all know Dust bullets, correct? Standard-issue ammunition for Huntress' and Huntsmen alike, and they prove to be both versatile and extremely easy to produce in bulk! While they are extremely good at dealing with the soft-flesh of the Grimm, they don't do as well against another Huntress' or Huntsmen's Aura…"
"A Dust bullet, when colliding with Aura, will compress and shatter, sending shrapnel over a large area! This, while effective against Aura-less foes like Grimm, don't work as well against foes with Aura. As the compression and subsequent shattering result in less energy and power being produced when it impacts the opponent's Aura."
"Dust bullets utilize Dust as a primer, usually fire dust, but after extensive research by yours truly!" Courrier pointed at himself, "I found out another, more complex primer that can vastly increase the power and speed of a bullet!"
"I call it 'gunpowder'! A mixture of a couple common elements being Sulphur, Charcoal, and Saltpetre, which when combined, creates a terrifyingly combustive powder that packs a serious punch!" Oobleck's now genuinely interested, surprising, considering who's talking right now, "Additionally! The specialized bullets will have an outer shell of lead or any soft-metal alloy! This causes the bullet to have a decreased chance at expanding and increase penetration!"
"Now you might be thinking, 'Penetration? Isn't that useless against Aura?', well yes but not quite, since the bullet have a lower chance at expanding, combined with the increased power coming from the gunpowder. All of this amounts to a large amount of force exerted onto Aura! Part of the reason why melee weapons are more reliable at breaking Aura is because of this force and power, these specialized bullets are like ranged melee swings with how much they mess up the opponent!"
"Interesting indeed! And we're about to see another demonstration of this as Ruby Rose of team RWBY lined up for another shot against team ABRN's Reese Chloris…!"
"And…"
Another thunderous boom sounded out from within the battlefield, the Vale crowd cheered loudly as another combatant was flung out of the stage with their Aura broken in one shot again! Courrier cackled as he watched the Mistral side of the crowd seethe at seeing another one of their team being beaten down and battered like this.
Unfortunately, Ruby's Aura also shattered, a combination of being attacked by the remaining two members of team ABRN and her very own Crescent Rose damaging her as a result of the massive recoil, taking her out of the match as well, "Unfortunate! Looks like Ruby Rose's Aura have shattered! Can team ABRN secure themselves a comeback?! Two on three?!"
All three Announcers watched with rapt attention as they leaned forward, watching the brutal battle unfold beneath them. Yang Xiao Long's jabs and punches too quick for the cameras to pick up, Weiss Schnee's glyphs positioned like landmines waiting for an unsuspecting opponent to accidentally stumble on to one.
"Looks like Yang took my advice to heart, eh?" Courrier smiled, "Told her that her moves were too wide and telegraphed and now look! Clean, efficient jabs and hooks so fast and straight that even the cameras struggle to catch up!"
"Mm, very interesting indeed!" Oobleck exclaimed loudly as Yang successfully uppercutted Nadir Shiko out of the arena, "Looks like Weiss Schnee and Blake Belladonna are preparing for a combined attack on Arslan Altan!"
Weiss came in with straightforward thrusts from her rapier, forcing Arslan on the back foot while Blake used her clones to distract Arslan from her sneak attack. Weiss then feigned a thrust, causing Arslan to mistime a parry and having her back opened for a surprise slash from Blake. Gambol Shroud tore through the girl's Aura as it shattered, signalling a victory for team RWBY.
Courrier screamed out in excitement as he stood up, his Announcer's chair falling backwards as he celebrated, grabbing his microphone and raising it up high, "AND THE VICTORY GOES TO TEAM RWBY! MAKE SOME NOISE VALE!"
And made some noise they did as the arena stands broke out into loud cheering, it was so loud and chaotic in fact, that Oobleck was afraid that it might start an actual riot… or a war between Vale and Mistral because of how the people over in the other stands are glaring at the celebration.
"That was an exhilarating match wasn't it watchers?" Port let out a hearty laugh as he watched Courrier prance around happily inside the Announcer's box, "We're going to have a little intermission before the next match between Vale's very own team JNPR-" "HELL YEAH! JNPR!" "and team BRNZ of Shade Academy!"
"VALE NUMBER ONE! VALE NUMBER ONE!" Courrier chanted into the microphone, the crowd did too, "WE'RE GOING TO WIN THIS THING!"
"Alright, the next match will start in thirty minutes or so! So all you spectators out there can go out and enjoy the festival! We'll announce the beginning of the next bracket soon! Have fun!"
"YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! VALE!"
And with that, the Announcer's box's broadcast was cut as the crowd slowly filtered out of the Colosseum and into the streets outside, enjoying themselves as they mess around with Festival games and eat Festival food. Oobleck turned to Courrier who was still as energetic as always, still in his outfit with the overalls instead of the bodysuit he wore back then.
Suddenly, the door to the Announcer's box was kicked in and in came Courrier's protégé Lavs Greenhorn, who leaned towards his ear and whispered something that Oobleck can't hear. In an instant, Courrier's expression changed from that of excited to deadly serious, "Really?" he raised an eyebrow at the girl, "I see how it is… well we have time don't we?"
Ms. Greenhorn nodded, Courrier then turned to Port and Oobleck, "I'll be departing after the team JNPR fight but I promise I'll be back for the singles bracket, in the meantime, you guys can use Lavs over here as another special guest appearance."
"Eh?" Ms. Greenhorn looked at Courrier with a surprised expression, "Wh- what? Why? Why me?"
"Public speaking training," Ms. Greenhorn sighed, defeated, "I'll introduce her personally though, no need to worry."
The beginning of Volume 3.
You can see the personality difference of the Courier here whenever he's on different types of drugs. Jet to get himself pumped up while Mentats mid-match so that he can have the required brain power to talk about specialized bullets.
Also, as a result of the Courier's presence, everyone that he interacted with is a bit stronger than in canon.
What's going to happen next? Will Jaune finally get off his ass and be the Huntsman he's supposed to be in episode one?
