The trip to Liara's apartment was a silent one. Kacey didn't know what to say to the turian sat beside her. On her way out of the Normandy, Garrus had caught up with her, saying that he wanted to go with her and see Liara. Kacey agreed; on the one condition that Garrus apologised for lashing out in the way that he did. Garrus had agreed to Kacey's terms and they both headed out to the taxi stand, to grab a cab to Liara's apartment, on the far side of Nos Astra.

"Do you know who is on the last dossier, Kacey?" Garrus asked, breaking the slience.

"Yeah. Do you?"

"No."

"Trick question." Kacey replied, teasingly, "You know who it is. And so do I. It's Tali."

"Tali?"

Kacey couldn't believe it either. The Illusive Man must've wanted to stay in Kacey's good books if he was sending her to recruit the quarian. He had previously considered it but refused as he 'needed more intel' on Tali before allowing her to join them. She didn't blame Garrus for being surprised; so far, it had just been the two of them and Joker, alongside a bunch of strangers. Not the first time this had happened, hell it happened two years ago. But the circumstances were different, right now was different. They weren't just chasing a rogue Spectre anymore. They were going on a suicide mission. One that may not have a happy ending.

"Yeah." Said Kacey as they arrived as Liara's apartment block, "I don't believe it either."

"Seems like someone is trying to get on your good side."

"Seems like desperation to me."

The pair rode the elevator up to Liara's apartment, which was located on one of the highest floors. Once they exited the elevator, they walked over to Liara's apartment, where they saw police tape covering the entrance.

"What the hell?" Kacey said as she headed over to an asari cop, "Hey, what's going on?"

"This area is sealed off." The officer replied, "Please step back, ma'am."

"Sealed off? Why?"

"Some tried to kill your friend, Commander Shepard." Another asari, in navy blue armour said.

"As a general rule, if people recognise me and I don't recognise them, it immediately brings up red flags." Kacey said.

"The joys of trust issues." Kaidan replied.

"Which seemed to rub off on me." Garrus added, "Even I knew that particular asari couldn't be trusted."

Kacey eyed the asari suspiciously; if they knew her, it probably wasn't for a good reason. It never was.

"Thank you, officer. Your people are dismissed." She said as she reached the bottom of the stairs.

"You can't do that!" The cop replied as Kacey and Garrus crossed the police line.

"Already done."

As the cops began to pack and leave, Kacey looked over at Garrus, who was gazing at the bullet holes in the glass windows. Once she was sure the asari was out of earshot, she said to Garrus, "I've got a really bad feeling about this."

"Likewise." Garrus replied, "I don't know if its just me, but something about that asari seems off to me."

"Seems like trust issues are rubbing off on you." Kacey said as the last of the cops left.

"Can't decide if that's a good or a bad thing." Garrus replied.

Kacey turned to face the asari as the last police officer left. The asari maintained her distance from the pair.

"Tela Vasir." She introduced herself, "Special Tactics and Recon."

"A Spectre?" Kacey questioned.

"I heard your status was reinstated." Tela said, "Good. You're one of our most famous operatives. Might even get you to sign my chest plate."

"And I already see the first red flag." Kaidan said, "There's no way that she said that."

"She did." Kacey said, "I know it weird, but it happened."

"It did." Garrus agreed, "But it's a good thing that Kacey didn't do it."

"Un no thanks?" Kacey said, turning a little red.

"Don't worry about it." Tela replied nonchalantly, "So I assume you had business with your friend this evening, Commander?"

"Yeah, I did."

"Mind if I ask what it was?"

"Just catching up, that's all." Kacey lied, "We haven't spoken in a long time. Being 'dead' for two years does a lot of damage to your social life."

"And your friend here?" Tela looked at Garrus, "Garrus Vakarian, right?"

"Here for the same reason." Garrus replied, "Or at least that was the plan until this happened."

"Is that why you're both heavily armed?"

"Last I checked, Illium was in Terminus Space." Kacey replied, "Why wouldn't we be armed?"

"Fair enough." Tela said, "So, does your friend have any enemies who would want to hurt her?"

"She was an information broker, so maybe the Shadow Broker? Or that guy she was threating on the comms? Or really anyone in that line of work, really. I don't know." Kacey said.

"The Shadow Broker?" Tela eyed Kacey with suspicion, "That's a dangerous enemy to have."

"So, what happened here?" Garrus asked.

"About 25 minutes ago, someone took a shot a T'Soni." Tela explained, "Note the bullet holes. She stuck around for four minutes before leaving the building. Whatever she was doing, it was important."

"Liara was expecting me." She would've left a message here—her office wasn't safe." Kacey said.

"I'm not surprised." Tela said, crossing her arms, "Illium is just Omega with expensive shoes. I haven't found anything useful for tracking her down yet. You both knew T'Soni better that I do. Where would she have hidden her backups?"

"I don't know." Kacey replied in her snarky tone, "I didn't know she had this apartment until this morning."

"We'll have a look around." Garrus said as he pulled Kacey aside.

Once Tela was out of earshot, Garrus spoke to Kacey, "Why exactly are we lying to her?"

"I don't trust her and if Liara really has pissed off the Shadow Broker, we don't know who could be out looking for her for him." Kacey replied, looking at the glass cabinet behind Garrus, "It's part of my old armour. Look."

"She had part of your old armour in a display case?" Kaidan questioned, "Why?"

"I don't know. I didn't ask." Kacey replied.

"Maybe you should." Kaidan responded.

"I have an even better question." Garrus mused, "How did she get it in the first place?"

"Good question." Kacey replied.

"Hmph. Looks like somebody didn't like you much either." Tela scoffed.

"Somebody? As in the vacuum of space?" Kaidan joked.

"Yes. Our true enemy, outer space!" Kacey laughed, "It has it out for anyone with the guts to traverse the stars."

Garrus and Kaidan burst out laughing as Kacey continued.

Kacey wandered around Liara's apartment. It was not what she had thought it would've been; it was sleek, expensive, and classy. If it weren't for the prothean artefacts in the display cases, she would've never known that Liara had lived here. As she drifted towards the kitchen, she saw a painting of a familiar location, hung up on the wall.

"That's not the asari home world." Tela said, "I'm not sure what planet that is."

"It's Ilos." Kacey mused.

Kacey then headed upstairs, hoping that something would turn up soon. She was starting to get concerned. As she looked around Liara's bedroom, which was way too clean given the circumstances, she saw a small photo next to the bed. A photo of the Normandy SR-1. Kacey saw Tela walk up behind her as she picked up the photo of the old ship, which turned into a photo of a dig site.

"The picture changed when you touched it." Tela said, "It must be keyed to your I.D. what does it show now?"

"It's a prothean dig site. Liara did leave a message." Kacey mused.

"There are a few prothean looking objects around the apartment." Tela said, "Let's see what we can find."

Kacey wandered around the apartment again, touching the display cases that held prothean looking objects. It was only when see approached the one near the kitchen and touched the glass did a small tray with a little black device appear from the cabinet.

"Looks like you found something." Garrus said.

Tela walked over to the pair, clearly overhearing Garrus talking to Kacey. She looked smug as she looked at the little black device in Kacey's hand.

"Backup disc." Tela mused, "Let's try it on her terminal."

Kacey walked over to Liara's terminal and put the disc in. A image of a salarian appeared on the screen, looking fearful.

"It looks like she recorded a call." Tela mused.

"What have you got for me, Seket?" Liara's voice rang out through the speakers.

"It was tricky, but you paid for the best." Seket replied, "I can narrow it down to a cluster, maybe even a system."

"How soon can you have it?"

"Shouldn't take long. Come to my office, Baria Frontiers, in the Dracon Trade Centre. Gotta say, though T'Soni…. you're making me a little nervous. How big is the trouble that could come out of this?"

"Relax, Seket. I'll see you in a few hours."

"This must be important." Kacey mused as the recording ended, "The Shadow Broker's people already tried to kill her once."

"I know where the Dracon Trade Centre is." Tela said quickly, "My car's outside."

"Well, then. Let's go." Kacey said.
