Saint Mungos Hospital, the only hospital in Magical Britain that dealt with all sorts of medical issues regardless of whether it was magical in nature or not, from the common cold to spell damage. Hidden under the façade of an old building, this was the hospital that had survived the 2 World Wars from the muggles and the Blood Supremacy civil war that gripped the nation. It may have its holdups, but it was able to perform its duties properly.

The staff had seen much in their lives, a fair number being the seniors who had survived the latest muggle war and the terror reign of Voldemort. Most were used to the blood and gore of patients or victims that went through their doors, while the newbies would have to go through the trial-by-fire approach by introducing them to the trauma patients that had been in heavy incidents. But no matter what, all staff had to man the reception area at some point in their careers, one of the easiest (not to mention the most boring) tasks in the hospital. This was where people could either come through the front door (which was not often), the Floo Network (which the elves dutifully cleaned every odd hour due to the ash), and then the Apparition Point. In most cases, the last option would be done for those who just want a quick checkup, or genuine life-and-death situations. Sometimes it could be for the DMLE, either for the victims or themselves that were involved with some case and were in critical condition, or the criminals who needed to stand trial for their crimes. In those cases, it would be the regular Aurors handling with the occasional senior Aurors.

With that in mind, one could forgive the young receptionist who just clocked in for the morning to get startled when the sound of a hasty Apparition blasted loudly in the usually silent arrival point and the head of the DMLE came marching into the room with two of her Aurors rushing behind her, and made a beeline for the receptionist desk, her blazing eyes making the few staff members in the room plaster themselves against the wall and giving her an uninterrupted path to the receptionist. The poor girl swallowed when the woman came to a stop and used her wand to cast a silencing ward around them and looked at her with her signature monocle reflecting her face.

"I have a Code Purple and a couple of Code Cyan that were checked in either yesterday or the day before. Where are they?" The woman almost growled at her, a clear indicator of how stressed she was at the moment. Thankfully, her words knocked the receptionist out of her state and went to perform the procedures automatically.

"I require confirmation of entry." The DMLE head took a deep breath to calm herself before nodding while displaying her badge. The receptionist went to grab her clipboard before continuing. "Name and job?"

"Madam Amelia Bones, Head of the Department of Magic Law Enforcement." The stern woman answered.

"Badge number?" The receptionist held up the badge provided to her to check against the clipboard while listening.

"901-659-081-C" Amelia called out the series of characters that was on her badge, having memorized and recited it many times in the past.

"Pass code and purpose?"

"Alpha, Lumos, Nundu, Oceanic, Lunesbane. I am here to check on possible witnesses to a high-risk case that could be detrimental to their well-being. Acknowledgement phrase: Donec Sacro Gravidanza." The receptionist nodded in agreement and returned the badge while tapping her clipboard with her wand to approve the entry. Understanding the need for secrecy, she then tapped a slip with the location of the people Amelia sought and handed it to her. The stern woman glanced at it quickly and nodded in reply, taking down the wards and moving away to her intended destination. Only when the trio of Aurors left did the receptionist let her body release the tension and she slumped against the chair while her fellow staff looked on in sympathy.

"Damn, I would almost pity the bastard who had pissed her off this much…"

Unknown to what was going on in the receptionist's head, Amelia Bones moved swiftly through the various corridors of the hospitals, her path made clear by people who took one look at her face and proceeded to move well away from her to avoid her obvious temper. It took a few minutes to get to the allocated ward named the 'Spell Disaster Witness Protection Ward', one of the lesser-known wards meant to house patients important to DMLE investigation and needed to be kept anonymous for various reasons. As she entered through the doors, Amelia spotted two of her assigned guards waiting by the corridor. A quick flash of her badge and exchange of pass-codes allowed her to continue on to one of the common rooms for patients to move about, where two other Aurors were currently in the middle of standing up at the sight of her.

"How are they, Auror Spinks?" The woman addressed the oldest of the team, a man who looked to be in his late thirties with brown hair, dark eyes, and a five o'clock shadow appearing on his face from the guard duty.

"The young ones are currently in the designated rooms, although the girls have woken up earlier since their injuries were less severe. When they heard about 'The Asset', they went to his room despite instructions to remain in their beds." Auror Spinks gave the report, sounding hesitant to call the subject in question such a name. "Rather notably, he started to calm down after they entered the room and stuck close, enough for the Healers to actually start running tests on him to make sure he is okay, so they decided to let them stay in his room. Kingsley has been running interference on his end to make sure no one could track them here; he ensured that all the Healers involved took oaths to never tell anyone with the excuse of them being witnesses to a crime. Which considering what we have found, is not too far off." He shrugged with an uneasy smile. Amelia merely nodded as she paused outside of a room that she could tell was layered with their security charms.

"And is he alright?" That prompted a tired sigh from the Auror while the others were notably depressed at that mention.

"Honestly, it is a miracle he is holding on, with all the crap he had to go through and what that mandid." Auror Spinks answered with a growl and a frown added towards the end. Amelia's lips thinned at the mention before shaking her head and placing a hand on the doorknob, pausing to let the intent wards recognize her before turning it and peering inside.

It was a fairly empty room with one relatively large bed and a few chairs along with a cabinet to hold potions and charm runes, and some paintings to liven up the space. Around said bed, two little girls roughly seven-years-old were sleeping on their chairs while holding on to the small hands of the sole patient of the room. Said patient was an emaciated young boy who looked very small and pale to the point that one would think he did not get out much in the sun. Being dressed in the hospital gown, Amelia could see the scars on his arms that gave the impression someone had cast multiple cutting hexes on him before having an amateur Healer use a healing charm to close them up without cleaning them. Combined with the shallow breathing, one could be forgiven into thinking that the young boy was on death's doors, waiting for the Grim Reaper to take him away. Even as she watched him, parts of him appeared to be blurring and fading before becoming solid again, giving the impression of his body stuck in Limbo.

Quite honestly, with what she had seen and the wisps of black smoke that was currently hovering around the trio like a dark sentient guardian, Amelia felt that perhaps death would be a mercy compared to all that had happened to the child. And this was no ordinary child that Healers were racing to save.

This was The-Boy-Who-Lived, the icon of Britain. The child who saved the people from the terror of the Dark Lord. The boy whose actions had inspired a great number of children.

The child they had failed terribly.

~ooOOoo~

Amelia remembered very clearly how the case fell on her desk. Three weeks ago, she barely sat down in her chair for the morning to start her work when Kingsley barged into her room and told her about all the magic sensors having blown from detecting an abnormally large burst of magic in a suburban town. She and her group of Aurors apparated to what appeared to be the remains of a house with the family strewn on the lawn, dazed and bruised from the ordeal while the muggle police had cordoned off the area to handle their investigation. Amelia balked at the amount of magical residue that was present in the area, it was comparable to the time during the blood war of Voldemort when her department had to fight fire with fire against the Death Eaters under the command of Barty Crouch.

Taking the moment to alter their clothes to fit in better, they mingled among the growing crowd and got to the family. Interrogations yielded very little as the parents seemed more concerned with taking care of their relatively overweight child in a manner that boggled a good number of the Aurors, not to mention using each breath to insult each and every one of them when they found out who they were somehow. She may have turned an eye or two away from her Aurors having to silence them just to get things moving, but what they managed to get had a few itching for more permanent spells, as they realized that there was a child with magic that had been raised and abused over the years, finally resulting in an uncontrollable burst of magic that ruptured the gas-line, thus blowing up the house. Thinking on her feet, Amelia ordered a few of her muggleborn Aurors to mingle with the muggle investigators to see what had happened.

The first hint of something going wrong came in the form of Albus Dumbledore appearing with his crew of random wizards and witches without caring that he was blatantly breaking the Stature of Secrecy with his Apparition or his eye-watering robes, and came forward to her demanding the location of the child while side-stepping her questions of what was going on. It was only the threat of throwing him into the holding cell in the Ministry and the usage of Veritaserum that he relented into telling her something that she had learned by now to take with grains of salt. He claimed that there was a magical child that he had placed under the care of the muggle couple in question because his parents were killed in the recent Blood War, and he had alert charms set to warn him of any magic that came in the area, thus necessitating his appearance when they blew up. Her attempts to get a name of the child was met with obstinate silence, only to be shouted out by the husband of the muggle couple that made her blood churn uneasily.

Learning that the boy in question was Harry Potter made the situation even more complicated than originally planned, especially with Dumbledore at the time attempting to muscle in on the investigation. Amelia took great delight in booting him out of the area and ensuring her Aurors listened to her orders only, noting with a big frown at two who were listening to Dumbledore's words a lot closer than she needed. She would have to deal with some of them later to ensure the information stayed secret.

It was one of her muggleborn cadets who had experience with the muggle police system that struck gold, in the form of a cupboard underneath the stairs that somehow survived the damage. He had gathered magical samples of the room along with photos to showcase what appeared to be a very damning and horrifying outlook of what Harry Potter had to go through since the night of his parent's death, while ensuring the muggle police found that veryinteresting. It was chaos when the Aurors returned to their office to review the evidence; many of the women who were mothers or hoping to have children in the future wept as they viewed the photos of blood-stained walls and a rough drawing of stick figures representing his parents with the badly written words "Harry's Room" faded out. The men who were fathers or starting a family were growling and gripping their wands very tightly as they were no doubt imagining their children in the boy's position. Amelia herself was barely controlling her emotions as she read through the report and evidence, torn between her pain for Harry Potter and her increasing rage at both the muggles who hurt him and Dumbledore who definitely knew something about this.

With all of her emotional turmoil, she made a vow to find the boy before Dumbledore and put him under her protective custody.

In that regard, one could forgive Amelia's reaction when she returned home two evenings later, exhausted and emotionally drained from the expanded search of Harry Potter, only to find said subject bleeding and unconscious in the arms of her frantic niece and her equally frantic friend while the house elves were going about like chickens without their heads.

Her reaction? A palm to her face and a tired sigh from her mouth.

After getting everyone to calm down, Susan and Hannah to bed with Dreamless Draughts, Harry Potter to a different room with an elf to clean his wounds, and a good cup of Fire-Whisky to pull herself together, Amelia fire-called Cecilia Abbot as a stand-in Healer and another Auror to prepare a report on-site. When they arrived at his assigned room, Amelia felt the need for another cup of Fire-Whisky at the sight of all the open wounds and scarring that littered his body like some patchwork. It only got worse when Cecilia cast the spell to list down all of those injuries over the years; Cecilia was crying by the one-foot mark, while her Auror had to switch to auto Dicta-Quills as he damaged the quill he had out of anger. Amelia felt very sick at the number of injuries the boy had on his body, but the more damning of the results were the multiple bindings to his magic that by all accounts would have rendered him a Squib if not grant him barely enough magic to cast a simple light charm. One of the bindings she recognized from her training days to have been used during the late 1400s when magic was prevalent and meant for the most heinous of criminals at the time before Azkaban became the norm for all criminals. There were also remnants of charms that, outside of monitoring and location-tracking types, were made to influence bad emotions to make the recipients more inclined to attack Harry.

If she did not know any better, Amelia would swear an oath that the boy was made to suffer if not die outright from all of the bindings, charms and the abuse.

The next morning, Amelia woke up in her bed with a splitting headache, dried tears, and an armful of her crying niece. After a somewhat half-hearted breakfast that no one was in the mood for, Amelia asked Susan and Hannah on how Harry Potter arrived at the house. To hear that the boy managed to perform an Apparition through the house wards was impressive, though it might account for the open wounds since he slammed through them. Amelia then went to check on him, who was awake by that point and hiding in the corner with his arms above his head, his eyes shining with tears. Amelia had to contain herself at the sight of the boy cowering in fear at all that was going on around him, not understanding what was happening. It only got worse when Cecilia came to check on him, only for him to react badly by claiming that he was 'a freak who should have died like his parents'. One of his female Aurors on duty had to leave the room to vent her frustrations by crying for a good 10 minutes; her partner had to drink a Calming Draught to hold out for the full length of his shift before returning back to the Ministry to transfigure the dummies at the training hall into the visage of the Dursleys, and proceeded to vent his pent-up rage by obliterating the targets with extreme prejudice and using the nastiest curses known to wizard-kind.

(They had to replace the entire set of combat dummies that week when others sworn to secrecy for the investigation came along to the training hall to do the exact same thing, to the point of rendering them inoperable. She may have contributed to the destruction with some of her choice curses.)

It was certainly a test on everyone's emotions for the week as Cecilia went about healing Harry without her usual staff or equipment, with the boy behaving like everyone was about to hit him at the smallest mistake or movement. Due to the malnutrition and his demeanor, one could be forgiven for believing Harry to be a timid five-year-old who could not believe that anyone would want to help him. Many of the female Aurors wanted to hug him but restrained themselves to give assurances that they would not just hurt him for 'not getting the meals done or doing the laundry', or 'send him into the cupboard' for an honest mistake. The male Aurors had to ask Madam Bones for permission to ingest more Calming Draughts than required to get their tempers under control. Amelia merely grabbed a bottle herself just to contain the emotions threatening to go free.

She may not be able to get the Dursleys into Azkaban, but she was going to have them enjoy an extended holiday in the muggle prisons. One of her own Aurors had made it his personal mission to gather as much as he could while contacting a friend of his who was a lawyer to grant them some 'hospitality' at some place that she did not know but was assured would be a grim reminder of their choices, since the muggles have a very dim view of child abusers even among criminals.

Funnily enough, her niece was the one who managed to break through Harry's guard and out of his shell, along with Hannah being her usual brash self. Between the two, Harry started to open up a little more and talk of his situation, even if it hurt listening to his innocent reply of how the relatives keep thinking of ways to hurt him to the point of spreading rumors of him being damaged in the head, or how he was always made to go to the cupboard and only let out when needing the toilet. It was honestly a question of who had the bigger desire to hurt the Dursleys: herself, her Aurors or Cecilia.

(Amelia admitted to being a little scared of Cecilia as she was giving out a very sinister laugh while talking out loud different medical spells that could go wrong during an 'inspection' of the Dursleys. The glint in the eyes of a few Aurors made it clear they would love to assist with said 'inspection'. Amelia considered a moment to deny any accountability if asked about them plotting a homicide.)

Things got to a head around the fifth day of his arrival when the children were at the pool and in an attempt to cheer Harry up, Susan nearly drowned in the pool. Before the adults could react, Harry exploded into a cloud of dark green miasma and dived into the pool to extract her out and gently placed on the ground before reforming his body. Amelia admitted to having her jaw drop while her security detail struggled to comprehend the knowledge that just came about from this.

Harry Potter, the Boy-Who-Lived, was abused by his relatives to the point that he ended up becoming an Obscurial, something that had not been seen since Grindelwald's time in New York, 1926!

The headaches and confusion increased when Cecilia came at her urging to find out why she did not detect it earlier. Somehow, and this was an answer that had Amelia and the other adults reaching for the Fire-Whiskey yet again, the bindings on Harry's core were so tightly locked that the Obscurus Aspect was constantly bound to them, and overtime from the exertion of his magic trying to fix his body and break free, the Obscurus somehow merged back with his body as a symbiote rather than the usual parasitic nature that would leach the life out of the host. That meant that Harry Potter had managed to defy all common sense, logic and worldly knowledge to become the first hybrid of human and Obscurus, something that had Cecilia baffled in all of her medical knowledge. And as much as she would like to know how, neither Amelia nor Cecilia had the desire to dissect the young boy.

Amelia made doubly sure to keep silent to avoid the Unspeakables from finding out.

At least Susan and Hannah were not too freaked out about it; if anything, they got over it within minutes and took it upon themselves to come up with a lot of weird ideas to help Harry gain more control over it aside from the 'Incoming Cloud of Doom' as the girls would put it. It was very weird seeing strands of dark mist coming out of the boy's hand to manipulate matter around him, and then it got really freaky when Harry managed to condense enough of the dark miasma to create facsimiles of creatures, such as a very scary looking raven with what appeared to be bone armor appearing on parts of its body and eyes that switched between an emerald green and a deep crimson red according to its mood, a werewolf like creature with bones spikes on the back and a crown like fixture around the head, or a serpent that had a horned mask over the head with scales that flickered between a deep green and a horrifying red.

With all that said and done, the girls' ideas do appear to be helping him gain more control over his magic, especially after Cecilia had begun to remove the bindings one at a time. His first attempt at a simple Lighting Charm after having three bindings removed had blinded the entire household by accident, with her security detail commenting it was like the sun had appeared in the house in the middle of the night and having to reassure the boy that he was not in trouble. One of her Aurors had commented being inspired to create what the muggles called a 'flash-bomb' and made sure to credit the boy once he got it working, at least until he could get his eyes working.

Still, Harry was happy within her house, which was more than she could say regarding the situation outside.

Despite all of the precautions, news leaked out of the situation, and the worst part was Rita Skeeter being the one to publish the news right on the front page of the Daily Prophet. With her usual brand of 'journalism', her article had unleashed a tidal wave of hatred towards Muggles in general and the Dursleys in particular, the populace raising hell about the muggles abusing magicals and demanding action to find Harry Potter. Amelia had to go to the Daily Prophet Press Office and told Barnabus Cuffe to restrain Rita Skeeter and to hand over any and all information regarding the case. Rita attempted to fight for 'freedom of press', but a brief introduction to the DMLE jail cell and some very angry Aurors made her very compliant for her part.

The biggest offender had to be Albus Dumbledore who saw fit to barge into her office without leave and demand the location of Harry, insisting that the boy was to be returned to his 'care' if not the Dursleys, whom he also demanded their location and immediate release.

Amelia saw it fit to kick him out of the office personally with no magic and a demonstration of her dragon leather boots, along with going through her Aurors with a fine comb and detaining two juniors who had talked to Dumbledore about the investigation in spite of strict instructions not to, and thankfully did not know that Harry was in her family home. It was a good thing that she went to update her wards to stop phoenix teleportation, she did not doubt that Dumbledore would attempt to phase right through her house if he had an inkling of an idea that Harry was in there.

Cornelius Fudge, for all of his bumbling foolishness, granted her the authority to find and protect Harry while giving her whatever she needed to prosecute the muggle relatives, no doubt trying to appeal to the pure-bloods' bias. But she did not like how Lucius and a few of his cash buddies kept meeting with the minister during this period, nor the news she got from her contact in the Child Services Department that spoke of a few of the 'Upstanding Citizens' asking for adoption forms and details on Harry, with a few attempting to bribe the secretaries on this. It was a good thing that she had managed to secure herself as a temporary guardian for Harry beforehand, now granted more power thanks to Cornelius. But she needed more information on Harry's guardianship, something smells fishy about the arrangement with the muggles.

Back on the home front, Harry appeared to be getting better at expressing his emotions and utilizing his magic. It was a little comforting to see him actually acting as a proper child even with the occasional relapse that saw him hiding in a corner and hugging himself, with Susan and Hannah lightly coaxing him out of his state. He ended up meeting Daphne Greengrass and Tracey Davis by accident when their parents came to visit the Bones around the second week, and aside from a minor misunderstanding, he ended up becoming friends with those two and got along well enough with the parents who promised Amelia to keep silent on the matter.

Cynthia and Amelia had to admit though, they found minor amusement at the sudden bout of possessiveness displayed by Susan and Hannah towards Harry whenever Daphne and Tracey interacted with him, and unless she was mistaken, the other two saw that as a challenge. The poor boy was confused with their interactions at times and had to be saved by a chuckling Auror every so often who had to reassure him that he was not at fault and that it was a girl thing.

The female Aurors gave their male counterparts a good clap at the back of the head for their remarks.

But Celina had confided with Amelia on something worrisome she had found on the latest health session; there was an unusually malevolent entity that had been found in Harry's signature scar, and it would appear that some of it had bled through and mixed with his Obscurus portion. Her Aurors had remarked about the raven-like entity observing them with a rather unusual intensity when the red eyes came on, along with the serpent entity that kept hissing at them each time they drew near. There had been moments when Harry was practicing control over his Obscurus form, the cloud appeared to be wrestling with the desire to attack them, with her niece and her friends as the exception. Parts of the miasma kept alternating colors from a dark green to a crimson red, and there were the wails that sent chills down their spines in those moments. At one point, Amelia would swear that she saw two faces in the miasma, one of Harry, the other of some man that was oddly serpentine-like with red eyes.

Then on a couple of occasions, Harry's personality seemed to shift from his frightened self to one that had seen for many years, and to another with a slightly sadistic streak. Celina had believed that the entity may be influencing Harry slightly and resolved to get a curse-breaker and other people she knew to get it out of him before it settled too much.

It was going well for 2 weeks when some higher power decided that Harry had enough good luck and threw everything out of the window at the start of the third week.

The first indication of bad tidings came in the form of her wards getting bombarded by multiple people that got the group riled up. Amelia was just thankful that a larger number than normal of Aurors had come to see Harry to check on their unofficial nephew, so that meant a majority of them heading out the front door to deal with the trouble makers while a group of 6 stayed behind to protect the children. If it was not so serious, Amelia would have laughed at the expressions on the attackers when her Aurors descended on them like a tidal wave and shut them down hard for 'interrupting their nephew time' as they insisted on calling it. After they were arrested, Amelia found out about them being paid by some people to find and kidnap Harry, the names of those people were kept from her by Unbreakable Vows. Not that it was hard to guess who given how some 'upstanding citizens' were looking frustrated for a couple of days.

The next indication came when their wards had to be taken down to be fixed from the attempted raid; barely a minute into shutting them down, a phoenix appeared and went straight for Harry who immediately shifted into his Obscurus form and dominated the bird to drive it away. Amelia had to curse inwardly at that, Dumbledore had been sending the phoenix near the compound for the past couple of weeks and now that Fawkes had confirmation of Harry being under her care along with him being an Obscurial, odds were good that Dumbledore would know.

A third indicator came about when Gringotts mail arrived for Harry, urging for a visit due to irregularities in the accounts. Amelia visited the goblin-run business using her position as temporary guardian, and found a lot of things that had her requesting a headache relieving potion or a strong drink. (The goblin she met at the time granted her the latter with one for himself.) This explained a lot of irregularities she kept finding trying to know about her ward: there was a will set aside by the Potters to ensure if something happened to the copy at the ministry, this would be the official copy that superseded every other copy. Details included the list of guardians, the distributions of assets to related people, and to her shock, the details on the identity of the Secret Keeper. Learning that Peter Pettigrew, the man who was posthumously granted an Order of Merlin, was the actual traitor of the Potters, while the reported traitor Sirius Black currently languishing in Azkaban was actually innocent, made Amelia Susan Bones a very angry woman. Even more so when the instructions were clear that Harry was not to be placed at the Dursleys at all, or that Dumbledore was the primary witness to the will alongside Sirius Black and Alice Longbottom.

This was going to be a very messy week.

That got confirmed on the fourth day of the week, when Harry was let out of the house for the first time with Susan to meet with Hannah and their other friends at a certain location to give Harry a chance to experience a normal life. Amelia had gathered a small team of Aurors to keep watch just in case anyone attempted to crash the party.

For the first few minutes, Harry was experiencing life as a regular child with no worries, which made Amelia hopeful that she was being a bit too paranoid.

The next minute, Amelia was kicking herself for tempting fate.

A group of people dressed in black robes and masks appeared by the pond and immediately fired off Bombardas at the group, thankfully repelled by the warding stones that she set up out of paranoia. Her Aurors went to take down the attackers with a few staying to guard the children until they could get them to safety, but when it came to Susan, Hannah and Harry, they were suddenly forced back by a new set of wards that splinched the Aurors and forced the children back. Despite their efforts, two of the attackers made it past her and towards the children. Harry was forced to switch to his Obscurus form to deal with the two quickly, and then the other attackers when they got caught off guard from the suddenness.

It would have been nice if that were the end of the matter.

Amelia barely got the children back to the house when her house elf appeared to announce the arrival of a certain meddlesome Dumbledore with his group of followers, demanding to see Harry. The crazy bastards even trespassed on her land when she refused and while she got most away with her wards along with two of her Auror guards, Dumbledore broke past all of them and went straight to Harry, forcing the boy to shift into his Obscurus form again to avoid capture from him or that bloody phoenix. That was when Dumbledore declared him Dark and decided that he must be destroyed, with him and his bloody crew blasting every spell they can mustered at the Obscurial, causing Harry to wail out in agony as the turbulent magic started to make her house rumble. Harry was making his way out when the girls tried to stop the people hurting him, one of them did not like them interrupting and pushed them hard against the wall, causing Susan to scream in pain while hitting the floor with her head bleeding.

That caused Harry to go on a rampage and went about taking down Dumbledore's people with his manifestations of the animals, the wolf incarnations doing a fair amount of damage to them with the ravens providing distractions and the serpents restricting their movements with the occasional bites. The main body was doing everything it could to go after Dumbledore and the one that hurted Susan, with the latter expiring quickly from the onslaught. Dumbledore as a last ditch effort cast something that forced all of the manifestations to gather at Harry's Obscurial form and merge themselves together before attempting to make his escape. Harry evidently did not like that and with a wail, sent out a tendril that removed his wand arm by the elbow and swallowed that along with his wand. That started an unusual chain reaction that saw her ground floor of her home trashed, their assailants and herself crashing to the ground and Harry to suddenly blow up.

Amelia was groggy at that point and pushed herself slowly as she looked to the two girls to see if they were not too injured, before noticing the wisps of black gathering about them. In front of her, Amelia saw Harry trying to pull himself back together, notably slower than his usual periods, and had to suppress the shudder at his general appearance as though she was looking at him through a broken and foggy glass window based on the cracks and gaps on his body and face. Roughly a few seconds after that thought, a bolt of lightning hit Harry, making him yell in pain as his body shifted irregularly. Amelia instinctively gripped her wand and spun around to fire a spell at the origin, which was one of Dumbledore's men having gotten up from his spot and firing a spell at Harry. Her adrenaline and emotions had lent more strength to the spell and sent that stooge into the air, but that gave Dumbledore the chance to grab another wand from the nearest wizard and try one more attack on Harry by firing some reddish blue spell at his forming body just as Fawkes appeared to attack Harry with fire from its wings.

Amelia knew that she was going to be hearing Harry's screams in her nightmares for the near future as cracks appeared on his body with flames issuing from them and his conceptual frame split apart, briefly forming what looked to be misty figures of himself with different colors and parts of his human body, before the room lit up and sent everyone flying out of the house except for Susan and Hannah being protected by a dome of black mist. Thankfully for Amelia, she landed in a thick bush that cushioned the impact, allowing her to get back on her feet after a brief moment of disorientation. That also helped her to get to Dumbledore and stunned his pompous ass to oblivion as the man attempted to make his escape, firing off a shot at the bloody phoenix that appeared again to try and get Dumbledore away. With a snarl coming off from the bird, it vanished in a fireball and left Amelia in the ruined yard with the unconscious forms of the attackers and her guards. Amelia barely had enough strength to call for backup before she sank to her knees panting, looking at the dark smoke that wandered about listlessly. She tried to call out to Harry to no avail, and for a moment she feared that Harry Potter was no more when she heard Susan calling out to him. That got a reaction and the smoke slowly and seemingly painfully gathered into a rough shape of a body, and then imploded to reveal him looking even worse than when he first came to her place. Amelia briefly saw his eyes change to a multitude of colors before his eyes rolled back and he collapsed to the ground like a puppet losing its strings.

And that was the scene that greeted her Aurors when they finally arrived…

~ooOOoo~

"Madam Bones?" Her thoughts broke from the voice, prompting her to turn to the Senior Healer of Saint Mungos that had arrived, his unkempt state and bloodshot eyes a clear indicator of his long night of observation.

"What is the status, Healer Kaine?" The elderly Healer held out a clipboard to look at the wording, but his expression was a clearer indication to Amelia, and she did not like it at all.

"I will start with the young ladies. Both had scratches and cuts that were healed on the spot, but young Susan had a minor concussion that will need to be monitored while young Hannah had her ears slightly deafened. While her ears are cleaned and healed from the explosion, her equilibrium is off so we need to give her time. We only need to have them stay around for one more night but they can leave afterwards."

"And Harry?" That question drew a weary sigh from the Healer who was looking every year of his old age.

"In my professional opinion, his body is messed up to say the least. Cecilia has done well to fix him as best as she could with the circumstances surrounding him, but this incident has undone a fair bit of her work." Kaine began his explanation. "His unusual circumstances make it hard for us to heal his body the way we wanted, however there is also the peculiarity that the wild magic is breaking down and rebuilding his body from the ground up, so we may have to wait a long while until it can settle. Even then, I do not know if we can properly heal him in the state he is."

"What do you mean?" Amelia asked, noting the hesitation.

"As you know, part of our procedure is to use Legilimency to look into the minds of children to ensure that there is no additional trauma placed on them, along with some form of assurance to come out of their shell. For Susan and Hannah, they are fine if not a little shaken from the experience. Mister Potter..." The Healer let out another sigh. "His mind is completely shredded, but there is something holding it up, and we cannot really enter the mind without getting attacked by the wild magic. The few times we managed to peek inside was due to your niece and Hannah keeping it calm."

"What did you find?" Amelia did not realize that she was gripping the chair rest to the point that it was groaning under the strain, nor did she care. The past few days felt like torment for the woman, and she did not like how her charges were suffering.

Healer Kaine weaved his hand through the thinning hair as he licked his lips, clearly trying to find words to describe the situation. "None of the experts who looked inside could see much, but what little they have found suggests that the boy's mind is trying to fit itself back together, but the boy seems to be closing himself off from all the pain. In response, his magic is attempting to keep him intact, and…" He paused to take a breath "as weird as it sounds, I think the Obscurus or the wild magic in particular are attempting to bring whatever pieces of his mind together to form split personalities."

"... What?" Amelia could be forgiven for gaping at the Director for his words, her Aurors were doing the same.

"This is not the first time that people who have experienced trauma in their youth develop another personality to cope with the pain, although it is only recently that people start to know of this condition given how hard it is to detect the symptoms and how little information available." The Healer started to explain as he guided her to a chair to sit in before taking a seat himself, sighing as his old bones eased into the cushioning. "In many of those cases, we would assume that the patient in question is possessed and would try to exorcise if not perform euthanasia on them. It is only thanks to the muggle-born interns we have on-hand that we even begin to understand the condition." The man paused to put into words for her to understand.

"For Mister Potter's situation, the trauma he has experienced with his relatives has pushed him to the brink, but he held on enough to reach your home. For the time he had spent in your house, his mind was 'relaxed' enough to help him gain some form of normality, but after what just happened, his mind is in literary pieces. Somewhere in his psyche, Harry Potter has given up in some manner, but with his magic going wild and some part of him wants to be with Susan and the rest of you. As a result, his magic is attempting to heal him and his mind." The Healer waved his wand to demonstrate a glowing ball that had broken into a few pieces and drifted about in the air, with a dark mist resembling the Obscurus moving between them.

"Our first two attempts to go into his mind showed that his psyche was barely hanging on, with his emotions blaring loudly to the point that Shane had to leave to avoid getting overwhelmed." the Healer started to explain. "On the third attempt, Phil had noted the presence of the Obscurus swirling around the boy's memories and emotions in an odd manner, but had to leave as it identified him as an enemy. Shane tried again an hour later and found the pieces of his psyche getting grouped together differently with distinct signatures coming out of them, not too different from newborns out of mothers. The last mind check showed the growing orbs as actual babies encased in some type of cocoon and the Obscurus protecting them, with one seemingly preparing to host one of the bigger aspects that was reported." the Director scratched his unshaven chin with a grimace, while the demonstration he had provided followed his wording to show what he meant.

"That last part is a little on the far side, so we are hoping to get another attempt to read his mind, provided your niece is awake for that since his magic does not get triggered in her presence. But what is also concerning me is the wild magic that... I have no other way to describe it considering I am basing this on the mind scans, the magic seems to be splitting in different amounts to each of the cocoons with a bigger ball of magic connected to all of them." By this point, the Aurors were looking at the Healer like he had announced Cornelius Fudge to be pregnant with Umbridge's baby and Severus Snape had become the Minister of Magic with his first rule to get every person to be in detention.

"You told me that Dumbledore fired a spell at Harry along with the phoenix attacking him. Was the spell's color a reddish blue with light purple streaks?" Amelia's slow nod had the Healer humming. "That might explain his current condition a lot better and what you described about his incorporal body splitting. A part of me is a little surprised that Dumbledore would use such a spell on a young boy."

"What spell is it?" One of the Aurors could not help the question, but Amelia did not rebuke her.

"It was an old spell that I had encountered when I was still an apprentice." Kaine leaned back in his seat as he tried to recall the details. "It was a relatively dark curse that originated around Euroasia, created a few years before the Stature of Secrecy came into effect if I remember correctly, and it was quite popular during Grindelwald's war. It was designed to attack the magical core of a person and break down the natural restraints and bonds before binding them back irregularly, effectively turning it into an explosive core that would destroy the recipient since the reconnection would be uneven. Effects differ depending on the amount of magic the person draws out of their core, ranging from blood vessels bursting to limbs burnt to a crisp, and at the extreme to a slow and painful death that could take days."

"But I do not believe he had accounted for Mr Potter being an Obscurial."

"Does that mean the kid can survive?" Another Auror asked with a hopeful tone.

"Of sorts." Kaine scratched his head. "We do not know enough about Obscurus other than them being the byproduct of abuse and the desire of the children to retain their magic without letting it out. The Obscurus is essentially magic gone wild, so the curse fired on him would effectively be reduced to some extent since the majority of the magic was outside of the shell, and may even help to keep his body in one state from the side effect. There is another factor that was considered, and this may be something you can hold over Dumbledore." Kaine pulled out an evidence bag used by the medical staff to hand over items to the DMLE, and showed it to them.

"A feather?" Amelia leaned forward to look at the dull and burnt feather. "Isn't that?"

"I believe this is one of a few feathers left behind by the phoenix when it attacked Mr Potter. We found four of these inside Mr Potter, this one was poking out so we could remove it. My understanding is that the wild magic was defending him from the phoenix and removing some of its feathers. From what we could tell, the wild magic was in the process of absorbing the feathers into himself when the curse hit him, and with such a contradiction of magic types, it caused him to mentally split." Kaine lowered the bag. "But I think it is the feathers that might have saved Mr Potter from the curse."

"How so?" Amelia clasped her hands tightly.

"As I said, the curse Dumbledore fired was one that would sever magical bonds and bind back irregularly. The wild magic was in the middle of absorbing the phoenix feathers to gain the magical properties, and I believe that some abilities may have been incorporated into Mr Potter. As I said, his body had four of these inside him being absorbed, and we have detected traces of phoenix magic in the core."

"So what does this all mean?" Amelia had to ask. Kaine shrugged at her with a wry smile.

"I have no idea what to tell you at this point, we need more time to observe him. What I can say is this: be prepared to have a boy with different attitudes, personalities and possible magic affinities to go with them, with a possible fire affinity from the phoenix attribute. From what we had checked, this young man is going to be a big powerhouse in the coming years."

Amelia did not answer that statement as her mind was trying to understand the explanation given by the Director, and failing miserably in the face of all that was happening. The idea that the boy was traumatized to the point of retreating into his psyche was bad enough, but the fact that he was creating split personalities to cope with his past, and that said personalities could end up having different magical affinities, and the possibility of a phoenix related personality to boot…

Merlin Damn it, she really needed a bloody drink.
